After dropping her off and promising to let her know about any developments, he heads to Pinchin Lane to pick up the hound Toby, following which he heads back to Pondicherry Lodge.Holmes reexamines the footprints of the accomplice and gets Watson to notice how the feet are different to his own; the toes being all spread out on the killers, while his and Watsons are all pressed together. Watson heads downstairs to loose Toby, finds Holmes to be on the roof ready to Climb down like the suspect must have done. Mounting the stairs again, Holmes gets Toby to sniff a creosote soaked handkerchief, and then set out across London, Toby leading the way. While walking, Holmes elaborates more on the suspects, suggesting that they must have been convicts, and Sholto and Morstan their guards. The Convicts must have originally found the treasure, this explains why they set out on a revenge mission against their guards. The reason for Sholto's great shock on the night he passed away was that he saw Small's face in the window, meaning that he had escaped from prison; as a guard, Sholto, would have known how long his sentence was. After walking many miles through London, Toby begins to speed up, Holmes and Watson believe that they are now very close to the perpetrators, and prepare their arms. Creosote, now being widely used to preserve wood, confused Toby, and he lead them to a lumber yard, causing Holmes and Watson to erupt in laughter. SEO stuff that I really don't want to have to do...Join me for another immersive narration of this classic detective story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
What is a species? On the surface, this seems like an easy question to answer. Get a bunch of biologists in the room together and you will quickly see it can be a bit of a loaded question. Questions like this are what drive scientists like Dr. Robert Laport. By looking at genome duplication events in plants like creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), he and his lab are curious how vast differences in genome numbers affect a species interaction with the environment, its pollinators, and even neighboring individuals of that species. Join us for a fun dive into the world of polyploidy! This poem came to me when I was sitting on the rocks near a wharf off water street in Port Townsend. I had climbed down off the sidewalk and found a spot where kids hang out and tag. It's a quiet place but some other person came with a notebook and started sketching. She kept looking toward at me, and I wonder if I made it in the drawing.I've been out on my bike recently, and the color of the sky and water is almost unbelievable. I've started to notice things again, my sense of smell has begun to return, my mind feels clearer. I get headaches now and then, still sleep strangely, often feel like crying or angry out of place, and often the urges almost overcome me. But I am not going to give up.Thank you for reading & listening.AQUAMARINEThe water blue, no, green — offshore glistens The wind • • • in fits & starts traces low along the surface. Have you ever dreamed of being famous? Imagined what it would be like to have all your dreams come true? Recognition, adoration, basking in the limelight. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? But dig a little deeper and you'll find that “The Road To Fame” is a prickly path, filled with twists & turns, backstabbing & betrayals. Experience a captivating journey into fame as the performers of Letters Aloud bring to life personal and illuminating letters from renowned figures like Stephen King, Dorothy Parker, Vincent Van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Bruce Lee, Oprah Winfrey, and Tom Hanks, and explore the steep cost and evolving nature of what it means to be “famous” from those who have traversed its path. A riotously funny, movingly poignant, and thought-provoking experience brought to life by a gifted ensemble of professional actors, with live musical accompaniment, and a dynamic slide show, “Before They Were Famous” is a show that leaves audiences with smiles on their faces and much to discuss on their drive home. Letters Aloud is a performing arts company that brings to life intimate, thought-provoking, and often humorous stories hidden within private letters of the past. Their performances are a unique combination of literature, theatre, and live music that celebrates the beauty of the written word and the human experience. (If you take NPR's Selected Shorts, cross it with The Moth podcast and add just a pinch of the old A Prairie Home Companion, you pretty much have their show…except, of course, with letters.) They believe that letters are more than just pieces of paper; they are windows into the past, bridges between people, and tools for empathy and connection. Reading them aloud in front of an audience makes for a truly unique and powerful collective experience. Whether you're a fan of literature, history, or simply good storytelling, we invite you to join us on a journey through the written word. Letters Aloud is a celebration of the human spirit and we look forward to sharing it with you. We're back to this century for this months episode as we talk about our favourite songs from 2011, ranging from indiepop to black metal, with various arguments about The Muppets along the way. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Battles, Beastie Boys, Bon Iver, Anna Calvi, Childish Gambino, Death Cab For Cutie, The Deer Tracks, Dir En Grey, Fleet Foxes, The Go! Team, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Kvelertak, Lanterns On The Lake, Limp Bizkit, Liturgy, Low, J Mascis, Mogwai, Thurston Moore, Opeth, Amanda Palmer, Josh T. Pearson, Radiohead, *shels, Soley, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ulver, The Weeknd, Weezer Ft Hayley Williams, & YOB.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6bizkqtWTTgxkNqH7GGoj5?si=af071097a6324a9aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com
