Today, doula and peer supporter Terri Dell is sharing her breastfeeding story which ends with her night weaning her daughter Riley on attempt number 3. It's a story that covers some early challenges but ends with a demonstration of how putting some boundaries in place, and getting to grips with nursing manners, can help a breastfeeding journey to continue. As Terri describes, she ‘fell back in love with breastfeeding' once she started to look after her own needs in the nursing relationship.Terri is on instagram as @terridellMy new book, ‘Supporting the Transition from Breastfeeding: a Guide to Weaning for Professionals, Supporters and Parents', is out now.You can get 10% off the book at the Jessica Kingsley press website, that's uk.jkp.com using the code MMPE10 at checkout.Follow me on Twitter @MakesMilk and on Instagram @emmapickettibclc or find out more on my website www.emmapickettbreastfeedingsupport.comThis podcast is presented by Emma Pickett IBCLC, and produced by Emily Crosby Media.

In today's episode we're hearing from Georgie about the birth of her son Phaedra. During her first trimester she struggled with feeling unwell but put her symptoms down to her pregnancy. When things didn't improve over time her care providers investigated and Georgie was eventually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and placed under consultant lead care. Conversations about induction started early as the baby was suspected to be large for gestational age due to Georgie's diabetes going untreated for so long, but Phaedra had other plans and surprised everyone by arriving at 35 weeks! Labour started spontaneously and Georgie gave birth in the hospital with her mum as her birth partner. In today's episode I'm chatting to Tania as she shares the story of Lyla's birth. Tania planned to birth at home and opted for an independent midwife incase the hospital's homebirth team were unavailable due to covid. She laboured at home in the water with the support of her partner but required a transfer to hospital towards the end of her labour to get some assistance with delivering the baby. Tania spiked a temperature in the hours after the birth so she and Lyla had to stay in hospital a few days for antibiotics and monitoring . She shares her incredibly positive breastfeeding and co-sleeping journey which continues to this day. You can find out more about Tania here and on her IG. www.serenalouth.com @SerenaLouth
Today's guest was Erin from Nursing Mamas! This conversation was so helpful for me as a mom who's still nursing at 19 months postpartum so I know this will be soooo helpful for you too! ✨ Erin is a virtual lactation educator and creator of Nursing Mamas. She combines her two Master's Degrees in Health and Family communication, lactation knowledge, and personal nursing experience to focus on the parent-toddler nursing relationship.
Engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are words all breastfeeding moms are familiar with. They can be scary & overwhelming, particularly at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, but can pop up throughout the duration of time that you are breastfeeding - mainly when significant changes are happening in your life, including night weaning & complete weaning. To further complicate things, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that science and leading lactation organizations and experts understand these conditions - this has resulted in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine completely overhauling their Mastitis Proctol. This means that the approach both lactating people & those who support them take when addressing engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis has changed, or needs to change. This is relevant to those who are early in their breastfeeding experience, of course, but it's ALSO relevant to those who have been breastfeeding for a year or more. You are more likely to be supporting friends & family members when they are encountering these things, and you are more likely to be using methods you were told to use when you face them yourself - but those methods are likely based on an outdated understanding of what engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are and could be creating MORE issues than they are solving. In this episode I break down: -> The big change -> Each condition in the Mastitis Spectrum of Conditions-> Support for general treatment & prevention -> The role stress plays (and what to do about it) DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to be medical advice. "Sensory Overload", feeling ashamed of the condition of your house, constantly trying to "get organized" ... maybe it's just early motherhood, or maybe it's ADHD. As an LC working with breastfeeding moms from pregnancy through to preschool (and beyond!), I have been a little shocked to see how frequently clients come to me who have ADHD, suspect they have ADHD, or are surprised themselves how many boxes they tick off in a screening questionnaire. There are so many ADHDer's in the "extended" breastfeeding community - but I don't see it being spoken about very much. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood myself, I knew it was important to open this conversation up in the breastfeeding space, and I knew that Katy Weber would be the perfect person to do it with. We talk about what the lived experience of an adult woman with ADHD is, different avenues for pursuing a diagnosis, and how to navigate the world once you have one. A little about Katy: " Diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 45, I've now made it my mission to help neurodivergent women learn to love their brains! I've spent the last 7 years coaching women to change their mindset and reframe their self-concept so they can finally recognize and lean into their gifts and abilities.I'm an author & public speaker, as well as a certified holistic health coach (INHC) and a certified yoga instructor (200 hr RYT). I live in the Hudson Valley, NY, with my husband, two children, our dog, and two cats. Before coaching, I spent 15 years as a newspaper editor & designer. I'm currently pursuing an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I'm also the host of the Women & ADHD podcast, ranked among the top 0.5% of all podcasts globally." In this episode of The Baby Pro Podcast, Phoebe Heffron, a pediatric nurse practitioner and aspiring IBCLC, talks about extended or biological nursing. She also shared the benefits of nursing into toddlerhood as well as cultural differences in breastfeeding practices, weaning, and common arguments against extended breastfeeding. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of doing what works best for the individual family and not letting others' opinions influence their decisions. In this episode, you will learn the following: The nursing customs of other countries and how they differ from those of the United States. Positive effects of prolonged nursing. Setting smaller goals and taking breastfeeding one day at a time rather than focusing on the overall picture. So often, in early parenthood, we talk about putting the baby first. Today's guest has a fresh approach to her journey in breastfeeding that we can all learn from. This week, episode 39 of Poised & Powerful Podcast is sharing the story of two different breastfeeding journeys! Feeding and caring for young children can do a number on your body - and it can be hard to find that time to take care of yourself. Join me for a restorative practice where we'll release tension in our necks, back, and shoulders. Clear your mind so you'll feel reset and re-energized for yourself and your family. As a mom of two kids, also juggling schooling for a master's in HR, it has been an intense journey. Despite the ups and downs, breastfeeding has been an area of her life that feels like a reprieve. It has been a bonding and meditative experience where she can release worries and struggles and just be present in the moment with her children. She uses breastfeeding as a time to recharge, learn about things that interest her, and connect with her kids. It has also been empowering. In this episode of Poised & Powerful Podcast, Shanti Geiser and I discuss the following:Having a pre-pandemic baby vs. a pandemic baby and what those experiences were like. The ups and downs of hospital birth vs. home birth (in two different states), NICU stays, weaning, and extended breastfeeding. What it's like when you truly have a supportive birth and pediatric support when you need that. Ultimately do what works best for you first, as a mom and as a breastfeeding parent, and taking time to take care of yourself.Breastfeeding is a service to your baby, but it should also be an empowering experience. Figuring out how to feed your baby can be emotional, complex and exhausting. It isn't linear and you can feel like you're being judged for your choices - much like a healing journey! That's why I wanted to share my story (with all its ups, downs and funny moments!) because what women need is more education, support and empathy as well as the confidence to trust their own intuition... something that can be hard to hear amongst all the noise. However you feed your baby and whatever challenges you have faced, you are a SUPERHERO. All mums are. This is just my personal experience and I hope it helps you feel less alone in your struggles and successes.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mojohealthspace)
When you see an image of a mother breastfeeding her toddler, what does it make you feel? In this podcast we are discussing the realities of extended ( or more accurately 'Natural Term' ) breastfeeding in the western world. Given UNICEF's statistics that 77-91% of women in countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Rwanda and Malawi are breastfeeding over 20 months, you could be forgiven for thinking that we didn't have a job to do to encourage mums to take up breastfeeding. But it seems that countries with higher incomes and education such as our own ( Ireland ) - where only 13% of mothers continue breastfeeding to 6 months and beyond - have a crisis on their hands. Maria O'Sullivan is just one of a growing population of mums who have taken breastfeeding through to its natural term; allowing their children to wean when they are ready and therefore giving their babies a wealth of emotional and nutritional advantages, as well as incurring many health benefits themselves such as lower risks of breast cancer. According to the WHO, even a modest increase in breastfeeding could prevent up to 10% of deaths in children under 5, given this statistic, it seems imperative that we band together to try to improve not only education but more importantly support for breastfeeding mums across the globe. Tune in to hear Marias story; as a single mum who has practiced extended breastfeeding with all three of her kids and gone on to train as a lactation consultant, providing valuable help to countless mums over the years she is uniquely placed to discuss this challenging topic. On this week's episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Rebecca Robinson from Norfolk. After trying for 2.5 years to fall pregnant, she was about to embark on her first IVF round when she found out she was pregnant with her first. She opted for Midwife-Led care at her local NHS trust and initially choose a homebirth. After some growth concerns, she changed for MLU care at her local hospital. She began labour at 41 weeks after 2 sweeps and ended up having a very fast labour at home, resulting in a BBA. Her little boy spent 10 days in the NICU after respirating meconium and when they were discharged, Rebecca speaks candidly about how hard the first 6 months of postpartum were. She breastfed for 2 years and fell pregnant naturally with her second during the pandemic. She found Hypnobirthing Rebirth to be helpful in processing the trauma from her first birth. She opted for an NHS homebirth this time around and she gave birth at home with the help of a midwife just before the second lockdown in October 2020. On this week's episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Grace, the founder of Irie&I and mother to Iris. She gave birth to her 21 month-old via NHS midwife-led care at the Whittington Hospital in London. She gave birth vaginally and opted for diamorphine in labour. Iris spent 5 days in the NICU and Grace shares her extended breastfeeding story. She fell pregnant after Iris and miscarried at 7 weeks. She talks candidly about her journey through that loss and is currently pregnant again in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. To hear her full story, tune into this week's episode! xo Ashley Hosted by Ashley Brenninkmeijer Music by Jonny Woodley Irie and I, Grace's children's shop Claire, Tutum Hypnobirthing Your Baby, Your Birth by Hollie de Cruz Michael Odent: "I usually claim that pregnant women should not read books about pregnancy and birth. Their time is too precious. They should, rather, watch the moon and sing to their babies in the womb.”
Would you breastfeed your baby until primary school if it meant avoiding a heap of plastic going into landfill? This is the question comedian Veronica Milsom is legitimately pondering as she tries to feed her baby using zero waste. Veronica is attempting to find the simplest ways to avoid the unnecessary packaging that comes with food… like those annoying yet very convenient single-use supermarket squeezy packs! With the help of Extended Breastfeeding advocate Maha Al Musa, Low Tox Life author Alexx Stuart, food expert Alice Zaslavsky and the entrepreneurs behind the waste-reducing ‘Subo’ bottle Glen and Julie-Anne Mayer, Veronica explores what her options are for healthy, low waste, low mess food for her baby. This week's episode of Motherness is proudly sponsored by Edwards & Co. Edwards & Co is a Kiwi owned and operated family business. They've recently expanded their nursery range with the launch of the SnuzKot Skandi Collection, alongside the already popular SnuzPod Bedside Bassinet. Today’s guest is Tehani Buchanan, a beautiful māmā who was the catalyst for sparking my awareness of decolonising mamahood. To say Tehani’s journey is varied would be quite the understatement but ‘journey’ really is the perfect word – her entry into motherhood began with a traumatic c-section birth at 33 weeks which left her with a mental injury that she says was raw, her daughter had a long NICU stay, and she exclusively pumped for a while as well. Then, with her second, a home birth after cesarean, exclusive breastfeeding to extended breastfeeding, wet nursing, feeding to sleep, immersing her tamariki in Te Reo Māori, and becoming a single mama. Thank you, Tehani for trusting me with the gift of sharing your experience, there is so much power in these words…Thank you again to Edwards & Co for sponsoring this week's episode. Today’s episode is one of the more thought-provoking ones and intentionally so. I speak with Christchurch mother-of-two, Kendall Green about her complex but beautiful feeding journeys with her daughters. Kendall was one of the first listeners to message me about Motherness and told me from the outset about her passion for advocating for milk sharing. I immediately knew she was someone I had to have on the podcast. Kendall’s experience covers a lot – a homebirth birth turned hospital birth, supply issues, lactation consultants, donor milk top-ups, feeding via an SNS tube, and weaning off top-ups to exclusive breastfeeding. She then went on to donate milk herself, set up a milk sharing service, and do extended breastfeeding. I know, it’s a lot. But feeding is a lot. And as Kendall says, it’s a fraught topic. In my experience, there is nothing more controversial, questioned, or debated more in motherhood than the way that you choose to feed your baby. I want to be clear that we’re not at all anti-formula, but what we are calling into question is mothers knowing that donor milk is an option. My hope is that this episode brings to light the amazing benefits of it, and allows you to consider the sacredness of human milk from Kendall’s perspective. Because an informed feeding decision is the best one, whichever path you choose to take. So, here’s Kendall on hers…Products mentioned:Haaka SNSMedela SNS Lact-AidFollow Kendall Green on Instagram. In this episode I interview a mother of 2 boys Zahra. Zahra lets us in on her breastfeeding journey with her first son, which included a tongue tie revision, mastitis which resulted in a breast abscess and initial problems with weight gain and attachment. She went on to successfully breastfeed her first son for over a year. Her second breastfeeding experience was very different from her first. It felt more natural, easy and instinctive from day one and she is currently still breastfeeding her nearly two year old.
