Thursday, May 22 - Dr. Jack Stockwell (www.forbiddendoctor.com & www.jackstockwell.com | Phone: 866-867-5070), a GAPS Practitioner and NUCCA Chiropractor, discusses the biggest concerns for health and medical news from a natural position over prescription drugs. He starts today's episode with the topic of the way the American diet has changed over recent generations, the drastic rise of health-related complications leading to death, and from where the food comes in an average diet today. Metabolic dysfunction is on the rise, a finding that half the people on the planet will be considered overweight by 2050, and how the more we eat processed carbohydrates equates to the sicker we get, and deep roots in medical history of the low carb approach to diets. Then, Dr. Jack alerts us to studies that have established people with chronic diseases are more likely to suffer from carbohydrate intolerance, and why you may want to look into the GAPS Diet for a gut-rebuilding diet. Lastly, Doug Stephan and Dr. Jack Stockwell address listener questions, including how to maintain optimal health, if dosages on supplements are correct, why not every food that comes from nature is healthy (spoiler alert: those fertilizers and pesticides could be causing you harm through the “healthy” food you eat), and why synthetic vitamins shouldn't be a preferred option. 4/22/24 - Becky and I will be discussing the GAPS diet. What is it? What is its effectiveness? Pros and cons and much more all within the big picture of our Catholic faith on The Simple Truth. Becky's Website safehavensmama.com.
Optimal digestion is crucial for overall health and well-being. It ensures that the body efficiently breaks down food into nutrients, which are then absorbed and utilized for energy, growth, and cellular repair. Proper digestion supports a strong immune system, maintains a healthy gut microbiome, and helps prevent gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, it plays a significant role in mental health, as the gut is often referred to as the "second brain" due to its impact on mood and cognitive function. Therefore, maintaining optimal digestion is vital for sustaining physical and mental health, enhancing quality of life, and preventing chronic diseases. In this episode of The Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, continues along the journey of digestion, explaining that if someone is not properly digesting their food, they will not be able to absorb and assimilate the nutrients from the foods they are eating, regardless of how healthful those foods are. Jamie brings back another historical audio clip from a lecture initially given by the founder of The Nutritional Therapy Association, Gray Graham. In Episode 10, Gray discussed the optimal function of digestion. This time, he walks you through “Digestive Hell” – the myriad of diseases, conditions, and other unpleasantries that arise from a suboptimal digestive system. The health of the organism is dependent upon the health of the organ systems, which are dependent upon the health of the organs, which is dependent upon the health of the tissues, which is dependent upon the health of the cells, which is dependent upon digestion. Thus, all wellness begins with digestion. Therefore, does all disease stem from digestive dysfunction? Not exactly, but you can eat the healthiest diet possible for your bio-individual needs, and if you're not breaking it down to the necessary molecules your body can utilize, what's the point? Every single cell in all tissues, organs, and systems of an organism relies on the ability to properly absorb nutrients from food. Factors such as stress, poor eating habits, gallbladder removal, and reduced levels of stomach acid (HCl) can hinder digestion. Given the critical role of nutrition in maintaining healthy cells, any disruption in digestion can be harmful in various ways. When the digestive system is compromised, it can lead to a domino effect, impacting the functioning of other bodily systems, 02:35 – Recap of optimal digestion 04:07 – Start of digestive dysfunction 05:23 – “Where's ‘Digestive Hell'?” 06:56 – Distraction, stress, sympathetic state 13:22 – Pancreatic amylase 13:30 – Dysbiosis, yeast, pathogens (Also at 19:50) 13:55 – It's all about acid/pH levels 15:17 – Macronutrient degradation 15:47 – Inputs for the production of HCl 16:20 – Things that cause hypochlorhydria (stress, too much protein, zinc, other nutrient deficiencies, allergies…) 17:13 – Dr. Jonathan Wright, the use of the Heidelberg Test for diagnosis of hypochlorhydria, pH for proper hormone function and enzymatic action 21:37 – Pasteur vs. Bechamp / Microorganisms vs. Terraine (Which is to blame?) 23:34 – Hpylori 26:53 – Heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, ulcers 37:50 – Homework/experiment 39:40 – Chyme into the duodenum, secretin, pancreas, bicarbonate, incomplete digestion, whole food particles in the small intestine 42:11 – Gallbladder, bile, fats, cholecystokinin, liver, fat-free or low-fat diet as the cause of gallstones and gallbladder dysfunction, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) 52:06 – Burping up fish oil and delayed release fish oil 55:04 – Undigested proteins, microvilli, leaky gut/gut permeability, immune dysfunction 56:03 – Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, healing her autistic child, GAPS Diet 58:04 – Large intestine/colon, ileocecal valve, dysbiosis, inflammation diverticulitis, irritable bowel, Crohn's disease, celiac disease/gluten reactivity, hormones/endocrine system, enzymes, heart health, allergies, butyric acid and foul-smelling feces Please SUBSCRIBE and Click Here to record a message for Jamie, ask a question, suggest an interviewee, or record an intro for the show!

When Michelle Allen joined us on the podcast, we were excited to dive into her perspective on launching her company Mother Culture. The origins of the company are rooted in her own family's struggles in curing some severe allergies and illness. From the start of the conversation, we knew Michelle was going to bring a wealth of knowledge. She taught us all about:- Why Raw Milk is healthy?- How to cure allergies?- Why food is medicine?- How to heal the gut with food?- How to start cooking nourishing meals for kids?- How to take risks in business?- What is the Weston A Price Foundation?- What is the GAPS Diet and why is the GAPS Diet so good for gut health? We spent a lot of time discussing the risks she took in starting her business. As a mother of 7, she went all in on her business and spent nearly every penny she had on her first piece of equipment (the one she still uses today). Are you curious about education options for your children? Or perhaps you're looking for gut health inspiration for you and your loved ones? This is an episode just for you. As my daughters 5 year old birthday approaches, I can feel the pressure of our schooling decisions for her getting building up. We've always had a Steiner school as our preference for our daughter, however our move to the country wasn't quite close enough to pursue this choice. I'm now leaning towards homeschooling, but understand this is a massive commitment but also comes with a whole lot of beautiful bonuses. Amelia is excited by the thought of our days on the farm, learning through play and life skills and yes, amongst interaction with out-of-the-home activities and sports... but we're still working on hubby. I just love hearing other Mumma's experiences and today I explore homeschooling from a Mumma of four and gut healing cookbook queen herself, Jo Whitton. Jo Whitton lives in Far North Queensland where she runs her business, Quirky Cooking, from home and enjoys the country life. Due to food intolerances in her family (herself and her four children), Jo began researching ways to improve their health through diet from the time her kids were very young. In 2008 she began a blog, Quirky Cooking, to share what she was learning and the recipes she was developing for her family. In 2014, Jo's son Isaac was diagnosed with severe OCD and anxiety, which resulted in a deep dive into gut health and food as medicine. Not only did Isaac's mental health stabilise, but her whole family saw massive improvements in their health. Jo has since helped thousands of families to heal with food, sharing the principles she used to heal her own family. Jo runs health seminars, cooking workshops, retreats and other events both in Australia and overseas, sharing how to transition to a healing, whole food diet in a doable and sustainable way. She also shares podcasts and videos and facilitates gut health programs to support people working through healing with food, regularly develops new recipes for her audience, and shares daily cooking videos from her kitchen on social media. Jo is the author of three best-selling cookbooks: “Quirky Cooking”, “Life-Changing Food” and “Simple Healing Food”. In this episode we explore: An introduction into Jo's family, their personal health challenges that lead them to embark their healing journey. The GAPS diet and their incredible gut healing experience. How and when they were able to reintroduce dairy into their diet, without reactions. What a typical day of meals looked like on the intro and full GAPS phases and some tips for navigating this with a family. What meals look like now they are not following the full GAPS diet and what foods are still potential triggers for them. When and why Jo began educating her children from home. What their days looked like while home schooling The homeschooling approach Jo took. How she found the balance between work life and mum life as a home schooling Mum. Most rewarding moments educating your children from home. How her children have transitioned into work after home schooling. Plus more! As Dr Natasha Cambell Mcbride states "In healthy gut flora, a digestive disorder cannot develop." So have I got your attention? If you're going around in circles with your health, feel like you've tried all the things for either small niggly symptoms or major signs of disturbed health and just stuck with where to from here, coming back to your gut health is likely where you need to turn. Yes, your gut microbiome and gut integrity is at the core of your overall health and wellbeing. When it comes to supporting all aspects of gut healing, the GAPS diet is one that deserves more air time. It does overwhelm most at the initial thought of it (me included), but if you're committed to allowing the healing to occur and supporting all areas of your health, particularly the way you function and feel mentally, this is a game changer. Cue one of Australia's top 'GAPS Diet' practitioners, Elyse Comerford. Elyse Comerford, founder of Well Belly Health Clinic, is an Integrative Nutritionist and Certified GAPS (Gut & Psychology/Physiology Syndrome) Practitioner, Keynote Speaker, Mentor, and most importantly, Mum to Dylan. Elyse's primary focus for the past decade has been in private practice, helping thousands of families overcome a whole host of health issues through the implementation of nourishing and healing principles, reducing toxic stress, and the GAPS protocol. Elyse has developed online programs, seminars and retreats that have changed the lives of thousands. Elyse's stress-less approach to health has been game changing for many, taking health from overwhelming to sustainable for every day busy families. Elyse has worked closely with Quirky Cooking's Jo Whitton for the past 7 years, creating programs, retreats, and collaborating on Jo's latest cookbook, ‘Simple Healing Foods'. You can also hear Elyse speak on a number of podcasts including ‘A Quirky Journey', ‘Low-Tox Life' and ‘Primal Alternative Podcast'. Elyse's approach is based on taking the normal "guilt, blame, shame and deprivation” and completely turning it on its head, focussing instead on healing, nourishing, and listening to the body. What We Cover: An insight into Elyse's personal health journey and what lead her to do the work she does to support people through the GAPS diet. What the GAPS diet is, how it began and how it is different to other gut healing diets (such as low FODMAP for SIBO). The stages of a GAPS diet- difference between intro and full GAPS and when you know when you are ready to change from one stage to the next. When you should consider following a GAPS diet. When not to follow the GAPS diet and Elyse's thoughts around GAPS during pregnancy, breastfeeding, babies and young children. The contributing factors for dark circles under eyes in children and her approach to supporting their health. Why parasite cleansing is not supportive for your gut health. How to overcome bowel movement changes during the GAPS diet- bth loose bowels and constipation. What is going wrong with conventional baby food introductions and how to set babies up from the beginning for healthy gut health through foods. Personally why and what healing Elyse notices when she follows GAPS intro. Tips for kids birthday parties- how to navigate for a healthy gut in children. Plus more! Today on Integrative Cancer Solutions I am joined by the founder and creator of the GAPS Diet Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride holds a degree in Medicine and Postgraduate degrees in both Neurology and Human Nutrition. In her clinic in Cambridge she specialized in nutrition for children and adults with behavioral and learning disabilities, and adults with digestive and immune system disorders.Dr. Campbell-McBride set up The Cambridge Nutrition Clinic in 1998. As a parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, she was acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and she has devoted much of her time to helping these families. She realized that nutrition played a critical role in helping children and adults to overcome their disabilities, and has pioneered the use of probiotics in this field. She believes that the link between learning disabilities, the food and drink that we take, and the condition of our digestive system is absolute, and the results of her work have supported her position on this subject. In her clinic, parents discuss all aspects of their child's condition, confident in the knowledge that they are not only talking to a professional but to a parent who has lived their experience. Her deep understanding of the challenges they face puts her advice in a class of its own. What is GAPS you ask? Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAP Syndrome or GAPS) is a condition establishing a connection between the functions of the digestive system and the brain. This term was coined by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, MMedSci (neurology), MMedSci (human nutrition) in 2004 after working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, obsessive –compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder and other neuro-psychological and psychiatric problems.Gut and Physiology Syndrome includes chronic physical conditions which stem from an unhealthy gut, such as all autoimmune conditions (celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type one, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune skin problems, Hashimoto disease and other hormonal problems, etc.), asthma, eczema, various allergies, food allergy and intolerance, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple many endocrine disorders (thyroid, adrenal and other), chronic infections, many neurological diseases and all chronic digestive disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, colitis, etc). The collective bacteria that reside along the GI tract is referred to as your gut microbiome. Clinical research continues to reveal how significant the health and function of the gut flora are to every physiological action in the body including metabolism, digestion, nutrient production and absorption, neurotransmitter production and transport, inflammation, detoxification, etc. Through dietary intervention, targeted supplementation, detoxification, and lifestyle changes, the nutritional protocol is designed to restore digestive function, brain function, and overall health. To learn more about the GAPS Diet click the link below.https://www.gapsdiet.com/Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. Resources Don't Miss These ThoughtsWho is Tina Haupert?According to Tina, what exactly is UC (ulcerative colitis)?Tina's full story: when she got sick, how she knew, testing, etc? And what were some of her uc symptoms? What are some specific foods Tina thinks help during ulcerative colitis flare-ups and also makes her feel much worse during the flare?Has Tina personally found any prescription medications and/or supplements that work really well for the treatment of ulcerative colitis? What are some of the lifestyle factors Tina knows she has to focus on in order to keep severe symptoms at bay? Getting enough sleep? Following a specific diet? Finding a good support group? Using a food journal? Keeping stress levels at a minimum? Etc.What is one thing that didn't work on Tina's journey?Tina's best piece of advice for anyone struggling with severe ulcerative colitis (or any other form of IBD for that matter) when it comes to improving overall quality of life? When it comes to UC, what is something Tina thinks most people don't understand? What is Ulcerative Colitis?Tina describes ulcerative colitis as an "inflammatory condition where ulcers form in the colon."UC is, in fact, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).This condition mainly affects the lining of the large intestine, one of the last portions of the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the most common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are abdominal pain, bloody stools, mucus, fatigue, poor appetite, and frequent bowel movements.Tina admits that she doesn't know how to "heal" UC per se, but more research surrounding the root causes is emerging.UC is believed to be caused by the interaction of several factors including the immune system, genetics, microbiome health, and the environment.New data proves that UC is likely caused by a combination of incorrect immune signaling and bacterial or viral presence in the colon. In a normal individual, the immune cells of one's immune system would send inflammatory markers in response to a foreign body or bacteria. However, this would die down once the pathogen was removed from the body.In someone with UC, it is believed that an overactive immune system continues to send inflammatory markers once the pathogen is removed. This results in... you guessed it: A constant state of inflammation and stomach upset. The goal of treatment is remission or the state of keeping the inflammation at bay.Since this disease is chronic, there is no way to "cure" it but the symptoms of UC can be reduced with proper treatment.Source: HEREEating for UCAlthough it is so tempting to think that a diet can solve your gut issues, Tina reminds us that this is entirely incorrect. She tried so many different diets including paleo, AIP, carnivore, and elemental, all of which didn't make much of a difference. Her advice for flare-friendly foods comes down to this:focus on consistency of foods- soft and easy to digestfoods such as smoothies, soups, broths- a lot of the fiber and harder to digest components broken down alreadyturn to whole food sources- stay away from processed food, fake sugarsprocessed foods are both inflammatory and lack a lot of necessary nutrients for maintaining a calm and happy gutbalanced diet KEY to healingshift attention to how you are eating- eat in a calm state that encourages optimal digestionparasympathetic activation of nervous system takes place in a relaxed headspaceincrease mineral consumption through whole foods- mineral balancing can make a HUGE issue as most people with Gutsy issues also have mineral deficiencies Tina's advice for eating centers around being "kind to [her] digestion," a mindset I think could be helpful for all of us to live by.She chooses foods that are healing and soothing in nature, and eats in a way that feels the best for her.By focusing so much attention to a specific diet, sometimes we can lose what feels best to us, and cause much more stress than is needed.Concentrating on these more healing ways of eating is the best way to feed your gut.Medication and SupplementationWhile a lot of us may have feelings of guilt surrounding traditional Western medicine, sometimes you just need it! There is no shame in using Western medicine, that is what it was made for.Remember this? --> Sometimes you just need the d#$% medication!Tina's current treatment uses prednisone, a medication that helps to decrease inflammation. She has tried many different medications, most of which have significantly helped her. Some of the most common Western medicines for UC include:aminosalicylates- reduce inflammation in the intestinal wallantibiotics- used to combat signs of infectionbiologics- suppress immune system and target specific immune system components such as cytokines or white blood cellscorticosteroids- used for temporary inflammation reliefimmune modifiers- help prevent chronic inflammatory response All of these medications are entirely FINE to try and hold no moral value. You are not reducing your gut healing by turning to Western medicine. In fact, a lot of people find the most success by toeing the line between drug therapy and alternative medicine. Here are some holistic medicine treatment options:Aloe vera- naturally reduces inflammationBoswellia serrata- anti-inflammatory and slows down intestinal motilityButyrate- helps with inflammation in milld UC casesLicorice- glycyrrhizin helps with inflammationSlippery elm- anti-inflammatoryCurcumin- helps break down fat and reduce inflammation A lot of these natural supplements are also good options for anyone starting their gut health journey.More information on anti-inflammatory herbs can be found in this article HERE.Sources: HERE and HEREMineral DeficienciesAs with most any Gutsy issue, mineral deficiencies are extremely common in those with UC.The gut does not absorb the nutrients it needs and our entire body suffers as a consequence.Tina loves focusing part of her practice on increasing nutrient absorption, in particular minerals, to help jumpstart full body healing.Minerals act as electrolytes within our body, which help cells function. "Electrolytes are the spark our cells need to function properly"Tina Haupert It is crucial to eat foods that are nutrient-dense so that we can more readily absorb minerals and vitamins. If needed, dietary supplements are always a great option.A little plug, but the Gutsy supplement line is perfect for tackling these absorption issues. They are formulated specifically for people with GI issues, to encourage optimal bioavailability. Check the line out HERE.Lifestyle SwapsIn addition to medications and diet, Tina also reveals some of the top lifestyle changes she made that helps her overall health and UC diagnosis.managing stresssetting boundaries in personal and professional lifeespecially important for those with type A personalities (most of us) that feel the need to be working 24/7!prioritizing sleepSLOWING down and taking time for yourselfallow your body time to rest and wind downtherapy Diet and supplementation will not work on their own, it takes a full lifestyle swap as well.Tina mentions how important it is to GIVE YOURSELF GRACE and focus on self-love.Let your body take the time it needs to heal and prioritize rest time.Mental SupportAs with most chronic conditions, the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis can come with some serious emotional distress, Feelings of shame, grief, and sadness are all very common when receiving a diagnosis such as this one.Tina found relief in both the use of talk therapy and group therapy in her treatment plan. She recommends the group IBD coach group, which is an online platform of ulcerative colitis members. It is a lifelong membership full of individuals striving to stay in remission and reclaim their health.Groups such as this can be so helpful for working through the emotional side of the illness. Surrounding yourself with a community full of people struggling in similar ways can help alleviate some of the isolation out of UC.Talk therapy is another great option. Having the chance to talk with a professional about your own personal feelings and struggles can be very helpful. Oftentimes they can teach you coping strategies and give advice on mindset shifts.Long term, both of these are great options for any sort of chronic condition.Closing ThoughtsTina closes by offering all Gutsy girls two pieces of advice.Don't give up:It is so easy to fall into a state of acceptance with feeling bad but you DESERVE to feel good. There is always something more you can try, don't fall victim to complacency. We can only heal ourselves:Healing comes down to you and you alone at the end of the day. You are the "expert" on your own body and it is up to you whether or not you want to reclaim your health. Digestive disorders are so individualized, you have to recognize what treatment feels good and what is not working. She also mentions that hyper-fixation on any diet or supplement is NOT the key to healing. It is a combination of so many different factors that all come together to heal. Fixating on one aspect of healing will only result in increased stress and obsessive behavior. Healing is entirely possible, but it requires more than one piece.More from A Gutsy GirlWant to learn even more about the gut and ways to heal it?Learn all the secrets via my signature book, A Gutsy Girl's Bible: a 21-day approach to healing the gut. Here are some holistic medicine treatment options:Aloe vera- naturally reduces inflammationBoswellia serrata- anti-inflammatory and slows down intestinal motilityButyrate- helps with inflammation in milld UC casesLicorice- glycyrrhizin helps with inflammationSlippery elm- anti-inflammatoryCurcumin- helps break down fat and reduce inflammation A lot of these natural supplements are also good options for anyone starting their gut health journey.More information on anti-inflammatory herbs can be found in this article HERE.Sources: HERE and HEREMineral DeficienciesAs with most any Gutsy issue, mineral deficiencies are extremely common in those with UC.The gut does not absorb the nutrients it needs and our entire body suffers as a consequence.Tina loves focusing part of her practice on increasing nutrient absorption, in particular minerals, to help jumpstart full body healing.Minerals act as electrolytes within our body, which help cells function."Electrolytes are the spark our cells need to function properly"Tina Haupert It is crucial to eat foods that are nutrient-dense so that we can more readily absorb minerals and vitamins. Our physical and mental health are inextricably tied to our gut health. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" and "Gut and Physiology Syndrome" (GAPS) explains today the importance of healing and sealing the gut for vibrant health. She describes how the GAPS diet can do just that, resolving a compromised digestive system (commonly referred to as "leaky gut"). The porous gut wall unfortunately allows toxins to flow from the gut to the bloodstream and then throughout the body, leading to physical diseases or mental health concerns. Whether the symptoms are related to mental health (like schizophrenia, depression, and ADHD) or physical health (like allergies, brain fog, and autoimmune conditions), they can be resolved by addressing the root problem: poor gut health. The GAPS nutritional protocol is the powerful tool Natasha recommends. She discusses how it works and reminds us that epigenetics (lifestyle changes) play a part in turning things around. She also invites us to keep in mind that a diagnosis of any kind is not our destiny. When we develop autoimmune disease, our body becomes more sensitive and that often includes food sensitivity. Many of us turn to healing diets in an effort to eliminate inflammatory foods and embrace the foods that support healing instead. One risk, however, is paying too much attention to the foods we remove and not enough to the foods we add. Another risk is sticking to a dietary template without personalizing it for our body's unique needs. There are lots of healing diets out there. We often talk about the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol and Wahls Protocol on this podcast. But other diets you may be familiar with include the Specific Carbohydrate Diet or GAPS Diet, the Low-FODMAP diet, a vegetarian or vegan diet, a ketogenic diet, or a carnivore diet. Today, we discuss which nutrient deficiencies are most common on which healing diets, and how we can make sure we're getting the nutrition we need. My guest is Dr. Sarah Ballantyne. She's a best-selling author, speaker, educator, and former research scientist, fascinated with the healing power of food.
