Candace Bond-Theriault discusses the need to center LGBTQIA+ communities in the conversation about reproductive health, rights, and justice. Bond-Theriault asserts that for reproductive justice to be truly successful, we must acknowledge that members of the LGBTQIA+ community often face distinct, specific, and interlocking oppressions when it comes to these rights. Family formation, contraception needs, and appropriate support from healthcare services are still poorly understood aspects of the LGBTQIA+ experience, which often challenge mainstream notions of the nuclear family. Candace Bond-Theriault, JD., LL.M. is a queer lawyer, writer, mother, and social justice advocate working at the intersections of law, policy, reproductive health rights, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ liberation, economic justice, and democracy reform. She is Adjunct Professor of Sociology and Criminology at Howard University, and Senior Director of Policy at the Black Women's Health Imperative. Her book Queering Reproductive Justice: An Invitation (2024), blends advocacy with a legal, rights-based framework and offers a unified path for attaining reproductive justice for LGBTQIA+ people.

I'm so glad to bring on four amazing guests who have dedicated their wisdom and time to researching and understanding health disparities and ways to increase equity in care, research, and overall access. Today the topic we are tapping into an important conversation on health as a human right. It only feels right to acknowledge that on Friday, June 24th - the Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v Jackson overturned the right to abortion that was in place since Roe v Wade was decided. Many of us have been dealing with the impact of this monumental change. Reproductive justice advocates and people all over the world are watching this regression of rights and looking for some answers. In a statement posted last week by the Black Women's Health Imperative, they wrote: “....as Black women and gender expansive people, we are under attack at every turn, with neither the courts or Congress coming to our aid. Our voting rights have been eviscerated. Our right to raise our families without fear is nonexistent. Now our hard-fought right to bodily autonomy has been stripped from us. We shoulder all the burdens of citizenship without the most basic benefits.” We will discuss some of the issues that need to be highlighted as we enter into this new era, with already staggering disparities and inequality in our health care system for communities of color and in particular black and brown bodies. To unpack some of these realities, we have Dr Jeannette Wade, Dr Nasra Abubakar, Dr Sharon Parker, and Dr Helyne Frederick.

So yeah. A lot's happened. I'm not okay. I'm not happy about a lot of things. I'm sad. I'm angry. I'm confused. I am all the emotions-- all at once. Frustrated doesn't even begin to cover it. And oh yeah, I'm back by the way, cause I can't take sitting back anymore not saying anything. Not voicing my opinion. If I can help it, I have to help take a stand and bring about some conversation, and a voice of reason into all this because the world is a wild, scary, crazy place. That said, I know things aren't all bad all the time, and I genuinely was going through it when I recorded this episode. Be advised though... definitely NSFW. I hope you're angry enough like me to help enact change. This is part one of our cervical cancer and Henrietta Lacks discussion. On this week's episode we discuss Henrietta Lacks' story and the disparity that remains in the diagnosis of and death from cervical cancer, especially in Black women. Henrietta Lacks is a Black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 but her cells have lived on and have made enormous contributions to medicine and science. And we highlight the Black Women's Health Imperative, the first and only national nonprofit organization created by Black women and dedicated to helping protect and advance the health and wellness of Black women and girls.   Resources:  https://lacksfamily.com/her-story https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/henriettalacks/ https://www.thelily.com/henrietta-lackss-family-is-suing-for-guardianship-of-her-immortal-cells/ https://cerving.bwhi.org/?utm_source=Earned&utm_medium=Earned&utm_content=Earned_CervingConfidence_EarnedCoverage&utm_campaign=CervingConfidence https://bwhi.org/2021/06/22/cerving-confidence-and-ciara-issue-call-to-black-women-commit-to-self-care-and-schedule-a-well-woman-exam/   Visit the Black Women's Health Imperative website to find resources, take action, donate, and support the organization's mission. https://bwhi.org/   If you would like to suggest a medical story we should discuss on the podcast or even your own personal story of medical distrust or disparities, please email us at distrustanddisparities@gmail.com.   Follow us on Instagram (@distrustanddisparities), Facebook, and Twitter (@DistrustPod).

So many of us have spent years trying to figure out the riddle of our skin. On this episode of Busine$$ of the V, Dr. Dweck and Rachel welcome someone who is helping us to figure it all out by connecting the dots – starting with the many hormones at play. Learn why Allie Eagan's career trajectory made her uniquely positioned to launch Veracity Skincare,  a personalized skin suite of testing and products like none other on the market today.   Based in scientific data, Veracity's advanced formulations deliver clean beauty products designed to optimize each individual's unique biochemistry. As Founder & CEO, Allie's vision embraces a theme that comes up regularly on the podcast: The interconnectivity of factors that impact our overall health. Veracity is built on the understanding that skin problems are often a symptom of deeper systemic issues, which for women are frequently hormonally-related.   Veracity was conceived as a horizontal platform that approaches skin wellness from many angles: hormonal testing, education and superior products developed to the highest standards – vegan, cruelty-free and not tested on animals. Veracity rejects the endocrine-disrupting chemicals used in the manufacturing of cosmetics of all types because the company's No. 1 commitment is to providing skincare that is hormonally safe for all life stages.   Instead of relying on “skin types” or generic quizzes, Veracity offers a way to determine your skincare routine through a simple at-home hormone test that gathers data about the state of your skin and with recommended products targeted specifically for each individual. Going one step further, Veracity also donates a portion of every Skin + Health Test to independent women's hormonal health research projects – to help develop better answers faster – as well as contributing 10% of every merch sale to the Black Women's Health Imperative for the equal treatment of women of color in the healthcare system.   As Dr. Dweck sums up: Veracity is providing health, medicine and beauty – all in one! The American healthcare system has a history of ignoring the health and wellness needs of Black women. Time and time again, African American women experience negative health outcomes, whether it be related to pregnancy and birth or other health related experiences. Research and statistics have revealed that this issue of poor health outcomes for Black women is a unique product of medical racism and discrimination in the United States, not a result of genetic difference between Black women and women of other races. Knowing all of this information, the question remains, what can be done to reconcile these health disparities being faced by so many African American women? This episode of Black Doctors Speak will explore these timely, complex issues that Black women are facing. Dr. LeNoir is joined by a number of guests on this episode to discuss these important topics. Firstly, we hear from Dr. LaTonya Washington, President of the Bluff City Medical Society, which has worked for decades to eradicate health disparities. Dr. Washington & Dr. LeNoir engage in an informational discussion on why the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted Black and brown communities, and the importance of receiving the COVID vaccinations. Next, Dr. LeNoir is accompanied by Dr. Kanika Harris, a health equity strategist, birth justice advocate and expert on maternal health from the Black Women's Health Imperative, as they explore a number of topics related to the health of Black women in America. The Black Women's Health Imperative is dedicated to fighting for the health equality of Black women, and this episode of Black Doctors Speak will give insight into the issues being faced by Black women, including COVID-19, maternal health and more! This episode also features Kineta Sealey, Esq. who works as the policy counsel for the Black Women's Health Imperative. She shares some details with Dr. LeNoir about legislation which would advocate for and protect Black women's health, and discusses how things such as climate change can exacerbate inequality in health outcomes.
