Christopher and Drew are joined in the zoom hysperspace universe with writing duo Laura Blackett & Eve Gleichman, creators of the inventive rom-com thriller, The Very Nice Box. They all get into how Gleichman and Blackett's partnership started, the joys of creating a sideways satire, and the desire to create warmth in the pages even as the book becomes a thriller. Then, they sink their chompers into Kristen Arnett's With Teeth, and how it makes you feel on the edge of a panic attack the whole time. contribute! https://patreon.com/smdb for drink recipes, book lists, and more, visit: somanydamnbooks.com music: Disaster Magic (https://soundcloud.com/disaster-magic) Learn more about your ad choices. Postcards number 49 is a special one. My guest Brian Keene will need no introduction to horror fiction fans. Brian writes novels, comic books, short stories, and nonfiction. He is the author of over fifty books, mostly in the horror, crime, and fantasy genres. In 2014 I was on hand to watch him receive the World Horror Grandmaster Award and he has been nominated six times for the Bram Stoker award and well as winning the big prize twice. His novel The Rising revolutionized the zombie novel in 2003 and was at the forefront of a rights battle with Leisure publishing who collapsed after decades of being one of the largest paperback publishers in the world. That battle resulted in Keene and several other authors regaining control of their work. For years he took on exploitive forces in publishing through his six years hosting “The Horror Show with Brian Keene.” On the show, Brian took on a larger-than-life combative role. I enjoyed this and was a weekly listener but I always knew the gentler personal Keene and the genre historian was being overshadowed. My hope with this conversation is to show that side of Brian I had hung out with at cons and on book tours. We talk at length about his time coming up, his early influences, and the importance of teaching the history of the genre. We do talk a bit about Brian's new novels including his new vampire novella With Teeth. If you dig what I am doing don't forget to Like, Rate, and Subscribe to Postcards. But if you want to support my efforts buy one of Brian or my books, please. •You can find my books here: https://bookshop.org/contributors/david-agranoff Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/
Eric and Medaya talk with queer writer Kristen Arnett about her knew novel, With Teeth, which centers on the troubled relationships between Sammie, her wife Monica and their son, Samson. As Samson grows up, it becomes clear that he isn't quite like the other children. He is emotionally aloof and prone o outbursts. As a teenager, he's even more of a mystery: a loner and a threat to the image of a normal family that Monica is so desperate to present to the world. As the stay at home Mom, and narrative focal point, Sammie is tasked with trying to understand both her mysterious son; and herself, as her marriage and seemingly every else begins to deteriorate around her - or so it seems. As With Teeth spins through its insightful portrayal of queer parenthood, the struggle for identity and autonomy amidst the disintegration of a marriage, Kristen Arnett keeps us guessing until the final moment when it appears that everything we think we know about Sammie, Monica, and Samson might be wrong. Also, Joan Silber, author of Secrets of Happiness, returns to recommend two recent novels: The Sun Collective by Charles Baxter; and The Boy in the Field by Margot Livesey.

On this week’s episode of The Waves, Slate Senior Editor Allegra Frank and Slate Production Assistant Madeline Ducharme talk about the latest season of Netflix’s Master of None. The pair digs into the show’s depiction of a queer Black relationship and breakup, and discusses if the show even a comedy anymore. Also: how are we supposed to care about a relationship when we first see it at its end? After the break, Allegra and Madeline go outside of the show to talk about Season 3’s creators, Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe. Ansari and Waithe have both stirred controversy in the past few years. At the height of the #MeToo movement, a now shuttered site called Babe.net reported an alleged unpleasant sexual encounter between a 22-year-old woman and Ansari. In response, Ansari stepped out of the spotlight for a couple years, though he said at the time that the encounter was consensual. Meanwhile, Waithe has worked on several projects, including 2019’s Queen and Slim and Amazon’s Them, that have been accused of propagating needlessly cruel Black violence on-screen. Allegra and Madeline discuss what we’re supposed to do with accusations and situations like this, particularly once the dust has settled. For Slate Plus members, Allegra and Madeline kick off our new segment, Gateway Feminism. They talk about one thing that helped make them feminists. For Allegra, it’s those sugar and spice cartoons, the Powerpuff Girls, while Madeline was heavily influenced by 2010s Tumblr. Recommendations Allegra recommends a seasonal favorite - S’mores flavored Oreos. Madeline thinks you should pick up Kristen Arnett’s second novel, With Teeth. Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Susan Matthews and June Thomas. Additional production help from Rosemary Belson. Hello True Believers. At this point we've taken just as long to release our episodes about the Fragile as it took Trent to do the same, so allow us to supplement you with a bonus episode with friend of the show Mike Spreigl. Steve called up Mike and they discuss Mike's history with the band, their love for the Fragile and it's various directions, the importance of a good wedding playlist, the beauty of Faith No More, How GREAT ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD IS, the physical ticket experience, the whimsical nature of TR, and much more. Mike has his own podcast (where this ep can also be downloaded) called Burning Bridges https://burningbridgeswithmikespreigl.simplecast.fm/ where a just turned 40 year old "muses about what has changed in his life as he has become older as well as revisits the things he loved as he grew up and discusses if those things still hold up today." So if you can't tell, he's our target audience. We hope you enjoy this bonus content. See you soon for arguments about With Teeth! (but first one more episode on the Fragile Era...don't worry, that episode is done and waiting to be unleashed)

The fourth instalment (Halo 69) of RUR, re-un-reviewing the best and the worst of the musical roadmaps of our lives. In this episode Evan, Alisdair, Morris and Alex talk about Nine Inch Nail's rock'n'roll stompfest With Teeth. Morris reveals an intense superfandom and we run out of recording space at the end so at least that part is abrupt.

It's been a really long time, but Dropped D is back for the time being. Desmond and Damian waste no time as the puns begin to fly inside of the first minute. Besides covering Trent Reznor's descent into EDM music on Nine Inch Nails' 2006 record With Teeth, the boys discover which of the two is more cultured in their Simpsons references, find that one of them is far more lenient than the other in NIN's new softer era, reminisce about the dark detective era of Denzel Washington's filmography, play a round of the brand new game Old or White?, and much more. Let us know what you thought: droppeddcast@gmail.com, and 410.871.8192.
