In this re-cast, we examine the sounds humans make in order to monitor, repel, and control beasts. Author Mandy-Suzanne Wong's Listen, We All Bleed is a creative nonfiction book that explores the human-animal relationship through animal-centered sound art. When we first released this episode in 2019, Listen was a collection of short essays in search of a publisher, but today we are thrilled to announce its official release by New Rivers Press--we're spreading the word by re-airing this powerful Phantom Power episode. You'll hear Mandy-Suzanne reading her unflinchingly reflective prose, mixed with the sound art she illuminates in these essays: works by Robbie Judkins, Claude Matthews, and Colleen Plumb. By turns beautiful and harrowing, these sounds and words reposition us, kindling empathy as we listen through non-human ears. Mack Hagood is joined by former co-host cris cheek for a four-legged listening session. In which Joel and Basie talk about J. V Foix's "At the Entrance to an Underground Station, Bound Hand and Foot by Customs Officials, I Saw How Marta Set Off in a Train for the Frontier. I Wanted to Smile at her, but a Policelike Militiaman Carried Me Off With His Own Family, and Set Fire to the Woods" written in September, 1936. We found the poem in David H Rosenthal's "Modern Catalan Poetry: An Anthology," published first by New Rivers Press in 1996. Siân Griffiths, author of Borrowed Horses (New Rivers Press, 2015) and Director of Creative Writing at Weber State University, our first guest on our soon-to-be famous podcast LITerally, joins us to talk about how it’s just as easy to not be an asshole writer as it is to be one, and she chooses to not be. While we do discuss literary pomposity – I used this word to be LITerally pompous – we talk about a lot more in this fun podcast that delves into the benefits of writing in a journal, the importance of literary citizenship, and how to dismiss advice from teachers and writers that just doesn’t work for you. Griffiths begins the podcast by reading her flash fiction, “What is Solid” (Versal, 2007).
