Forty years ago this December saw the release of the most popular AND influential action comedies of all time. This was star Eddie Murphy's immediate follow-up to his two breakout hits the previous years, 48 Hrs. in '82 and then Trading Places in '83, only THIS time he was the sole star above the title for the first time. And Eddie did not disappoint with this fish-out-of-water comedy about a Detroit cop named Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) who travels across the country to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his best friend. Even though that might not SOUND like the set-up for an comedic film, Murphy's gift for improvisation and a game supporting cast (John Ashton, Judge Reinhold playing two local cops whom he teams up with in Beverly Hills) bring a lot of humor to the proceedings regardless, along with a clever Oscar-nominated script from Daniel Petrie Jr and top-flight helming from director Martin Brest whose follow-up would be the even better Midnight Run four years later. What results are memorable characters, quotable lines, and of course a kicking soundtrack including an iconic synth score from Harold Faultemeyer. The Heat IS On! Today, we're cruising back to the 1980s with a deep dive into Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a seminal teen comedy that has left an indelible mark on the genre. Directed by Amy Heckerling and released in 1982, this film not only launched several careers but also captured the quintessential teen experience with humor, honesty, and a bit of rebellion.Based on Cameron Crowe's book, which he wrote after going undercover at a San Diego high school, Fast Times at Ridgemont High presents a slice-of-life look at the trials and tribulations of teenage life. The film explores the lives of several students including the iconic Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn), a perpetually stoned surfer, the ambitious Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her older brother, Brad (Judge Reinhold), as they navigate the complexities of adolescence. From dating disasters to job frustrations, the film covers a wide range of teen experiences. Stacy's explorations of love and relationships, Spicoli's clashes with the strict Mr. Hand (Ray Walston), and Brad's journey toward independence paint a vivid picture of the ups and downs of teenage life. The narrative is episodic, shifting focus among characters and their individual stories, which are both humorous and poignant. Why It Stands OutAuthentic Dialogue and Situations: The film shines in its depiction of teenage dialogue and situations, feeling both authentic and relatable. It captures the awkwardness, excitement, and confusion of high school without resorting to cliché.Breakout Performances: Sean Penn's portrayal of Spicoli is legendary, providing a source of comic relief and becoming a cultural icon. The performances by a young ensemble cast, including future stars like Nicolas Cage and Forest Whitaker, are dynamic and memorable.Cultural Impact: The film tackled teen issues with a frankness that was rare for its time, addressing topics like sex, drugs, and identity with a directness that has influenced countless teen comedies that followed.Fast Times at Ridgemont High explores the theme of adolescence as a pivotal time for self-discovery and personal growth. Each character's journey through the school year reflects the broader search for identity that defines the teenage experience.Join us as we revisit the hallways of Ridgemont High, exploring its iconic characters and memorable scenes. Whether it's your first time watching or a beloved rewatch, Fast Times promises both laughs and a thoughtful reflection on the highs and lows of teenage life.

Picture this: Jake, a man who's had one too many daiquiris, decides to ride his horse home, only to be stopped by the police for this less-than-sober adventure. There are some actors from the 80s (I'm not gonna name names) that should have abandoned their movie careers early on and make the switch to television. It would have saved them years of decline and humiliation as the quality of their movies slowly sunk into the depth of the VHS bargain bins. Again, I'm not gonna name names...Steve Guttenberg and Judge Reinhold! To show I can also reward actors who made great career choices, I also take a look at an actor who did make an early jump to television and it proved to be brilliant. I won't give away this name, but it rhymes with Schmill Schmeaton. Live long and prosper...or whatever.

Forty years after the film Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Detroit police detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returns for the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series. After being burned by Eddie's legacy sequel Coming 2 America (2021), we were cautious about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. We share our love for Eddie in the opening, along with Harold Faltermeyer, who composed the great "Axel F" theme song. This movie was released on Netflix, where it quickly rose to the most-watched film. Many older actors returned for this one, including Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. The film also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon, and Taylour Paige as Axel's daughter. The film is directed by first-time director Mark Molloy. We tried to bring some love and light to this one!

Emilio, Madeline, and Julian finish off their cycle on High School Movies with a "Close-Up" on the great director Amy Heckerling, and a selection of her school-based films. The trio kick it off with 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Heckerling's directorial debut and an unforgettable ensemble comedy/drama with a Cameron Crowe-penned script and career-defining performances from many of its stars. To follow, they then take a look at 1995's "Clueless," Heckerling's mid-90s, Beverly Hills-set adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma," and a trendsetting masterpiece influential to many later movies set in high school and beyond. And to finish off, the trio shed some light on 2000's "Loser," a college film to punctuate the episode cycle, and one that may have done better critically and at the box office had Amy Heckerling been allowed more autonomy in its production. Send us a Text Message.Nothing beats the 80's when it comes to movies and nothing says 80's movies like 1984's "Beverly Hills Cop". Join us as we go back and watch a film that dominated the Box Office with laughs and all-out action. We have to admit, our hopes are high for this movie even though we have not seen it in a long time. But what can be better than Eddie Murphy in the 80s? Our only fear is that this movie might be outdated and seriously overrated. But with a cast that includes Ronny Cox, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Jonathan Banks & a ton more, we are confident this movie is still great. We're pretty sure this movie is still great. We hope this movie is still great. Let's cross our fingers and find out. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

“You don't need to ask for directions anymore, you're no longer a fish out of water!” - Andrew on Axel's third time in Los Angeles On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza tackles an action comedy sequel that didn't need to exist at all, and no one wanted to make in the first place, Beverly Hills Cop III! What in the hell tone were they shooting for with this movie? How is Axel not blamed for Inspector Todd's death at the hands of Ellis De Wald? Why did they replace Taggart with Hector Elizondo playing a guy who's just Taggart with different facial hair? How is Wonder World still open for business after all the carnage Axel and company carry out on park grounds? And how hilarious and great is this George Lucas cameo? PLUS: What was the Tunnel of Love supposed to represent at the end? Beverly Hills Cop III stars Eddie Murphy, Timothy Carhart, Stephen McHattie, Judge Reinhold, Hector Elizondo, John Saxon, Theresa Randle, Alan Young, Bronson Pinchot, and George Lucas as Disappointed Man; directed by John Landis. An indelible synth theme by Harold Faltermeyer. A scene-stealing turn from Bronson Pinchot. A banana in a tailpipe. EDDIE FREAKING MURPHY. It's no wonder that Martin Brest's Beverly Hills Cop is one of the most beloved action comedies (and still the highest-grossing R-rated film adjusted for inflation). We couldn't be more thrilled to have two of the hottest action directors in Hollywood - Bad Boys: Ride or Die's Adil & Bilall - join us to talk about Brest's blockbuster second feature, bringing all the expertise from their years spent developing Beverly Hills Cop 4. We're getting into the Stallone of it all, the Simpson/Bruckheimer of it all, the Judge Reinhold of it all - while also taking some time to unpack the specific nuances that Brest brings as a director (as opposed to Tony Scott's take on the sequel). And….yes. We talk about BATGIRL.
