Episode 150, pt. 1 – Anathema Discography Part One: Splitting Mountains Wide

Liverpool, England's Anathema are one of the bedrocks of the Radical Research musical adventure. It's why we've chosen to commemorate our 150th episode with a two-part dive into their entire catalog, from the harrowing wretchedness of their early demo work to the graceful final statement of 2017's The Optimist. We rejoice and weep, praise and cry, as we explore all of their 1990s output in episode 1 of this 2-part indulgence. Note I: As explained in this episode, we aren't giving short shrift (whatever shrift is!) to the Eternity album. It's just that we covered it in great detail on episode 125, which you can find right here: https://www.radicalresearch.org/episode-125-do-you-think-were-forever-anathemas-eternity/ Note II: We've been doing this for years now, and after 150 episodes, Jeff still can't get it right: the lack of fidelity on his voice in the first half of this episode is because he had the microphone backwards. He finally corrects this around minute 59. C'mon, Wagner, get with the program already! Note III: Jeff's Voivod book, ‘Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse of Voivod,' is now available. You can purchase a copy of the 540-page, 3-pound behemoth HERE: radicalresearch.org/voivod Note IV: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Music cited in order of appearance: “The Lord of Mortal Pestilence” (An Iliad of Woes demo, 1990) “At One With the Earth” (All Faith is Lost demo, 1991) “…And I Lust” (The Crestfallen EP, 1992) “Crestfallen” (The Crestfallen EP, 1992) “Sweet Tears” (Serenades, 1993) “Sleepless” (Serenades, 1993) “We, the Gods” (Pentecost III, 1994) “Memento Mori” (Pentecost III, 1994) “Shroud of Frost” (The Silent Enigma, 1995) “Cerulean Twilight” (The Silent Enigma, 1995) “The Beloved” (Eternity, 1996) “Re-Connect” (Alternative 4, 1998) “Inner Silence” (Alternative 4, 1998) “Pitiless” (Judgement, 1999) “Judgement” (Judgement, 1999) “Wings of God” (Judgement, 1999) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

I featured another track from their album, Desk Job at Castle Dracula, on the Top 25 show. Invasives just recently finished a tour across Canada. They played shows all through out April and half of May. More shows are set for June as well. Check out their website for more details. Also on the show, Muerte Y Destruccion, a three piece from Madrid, Spain. This trio plays really sweet pop-punk tunes. Their album, La Casa de Fieras, is saturated with it. Awesome stuff. Download it from their bandcamp. Good Men Die Like Dogs are a punk band from Arizona with a few records out. Some new music is in the works, but they have a bunch of tunes all ready available on their website. Good, catchy punk rock from AZ. Also with some fine punk tunes are Neckties Make Me Nervous from Portland, Oregon. The band has since disbanded, but check out the records they still have on their website. Other online outlets still carry copies as well. And from New Jersey, Brick Mower, a punk rock three piece. Lots of great tunes on their new record, Under the Sink, which you can purchase here or here. They too have a bunch of shows lined up for this month as well as in June. Check out more details here. They need to come out West soon...or whenever :-D. Thank you to the bands and thanks for making awesome music. Please enjoy the music on this episode. It's pretty rad stuff. At the beginning of this month, I got to see a bunch of my favorite bands play, three of them coming out of retirement for one day. It was a blast. The last time I got to see Unit 101 play was 26 years and 1 day ago, opening up for blink-182, Fenix Tx and Less than Jake. The last time I saw Olivia the Band was likely a Battle of the Bands at Pipeline in the early 2000's. And Potluck was just a couple years ago for the Ryan Potes Fundraiser show. But that was my first time seeing them ever (not counting the rehersals I saw at work *cheee). Area-M and Grapefruit are just so lovely as always, I think the last time I saw them was at Sailor Jerry Fest in June. What a wonderful night. The Caballerials played Audio Feed this year! That looked like a lot of fun. One of the years, gonna have to make it up for that festival *fingers crossed.  Playlist Unit 101 - 20/40//Time (Live) [0:16]  Potluck - Why (Anthology) [6:03] Olivia the Band - My Friend (EP) [9:32] Grapefruit - Change Up (Live) [12:16] The Caballerials - Legend (Waxed Curbs & Suburbs) [19:19] Social Media Website: www.takingtheleadmedia.com YouTube: Taking the Lead Media Instagram: https://instagram.com/takingtheleadmedia Mixcloud: https://www.mixcloud.com/thisisrumorcontrol/ Records Revolution: Exploring the Discography of GC Records Twitter: https://twitter.com/ttlmpodcast Tumblr: https://oneshotsideshow.tumblr.com

This band is a major cog in the engine that powers us. We've said that about Voivod, King Crimson, and Arcturus, and will add Watchtower as a major ingredient of what compels Radical Research. Formed in 1982 by four maniacs whose handle on their instruments was far beyond their years, and with record collections spanning speedy heavy metal as well as wild prog rock and jazz fusion, Watchtower made perhaps the largest impact of any metal band with a mere two full-length albums to their credit. Listen in wonder right along with us, because we're still trying to figure it all out! Note I: Jeff's Voivod book, ‘Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse of Voivod,' is now available. You can purchase a copy of the 540-page, 3-pound behemoth HERE: radicalresearch.org/voivod Note II: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Music cited in order of appearance: “Meltdown” (Cottage Cheese From the Lips of Death compilation, 1984) “Tyrants in Distress” (Energetic Disassembly, 1985) “Energetic Disassembly” (Energetic Disassembly, 1985) “Cimmerian Shadows” (Energetic Disassembly, 1985) “The Eldritch” (Instruments of Random Murder demo, 1987) “Mayday in Kiev” (Control and Resistance, 1989) “Control and Resistance” (Control and Resistance, 1989) “Life Cycles” (Control and Resistance, 1989) “Coming Home” (Scott Jeffreys audition, 1990) “Technology Inaction” (Concepts of Math: Book One, 2016) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives.  In this episode, host Dave Gebroe talks with the epitome of DIY punk spirit (who can also write a pop hook like the best of ‘em), Unrest's Mark Robinson, and together they discuss Billy Joel's entire recorded output with commentary, stories, and star ratings for every release. Part 7 covers the era during which Billy catches his manager's hand thrust deep in the cookie jar, Christie Brinkley divorces him, he stops writing pop music, dips his toe in classical waters, his drinking starts getting super scary, he gets married again, his third wife gives him a rehab ultimatum, he gets divorced a third time, and then gets married yet again. And he also manages to make and release Storm Front, River Of Dreams, and Fantasies And Delusions. The goal for this and the previous episode was to make great art about bad art, to create two podcast episodes in inverse qualitative proportion to the rock bottom records being discussed. Mark and Dave accomplished their goal. Here are just a few of the many things that Mark discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The crazed embezzlement fall-out with Billy's manager Frank Weber;  Why we have Sean Ono Lennon to thank for “We Didn't Start The Fire”; Billy's Shelter Island Sessions, which collapsed and then transformed into River Of Dreams; Billy's swerve into the classical lane with Fantasies And Delusions; And an in-depth deep dive on every song off Storm Front and River Of Dreams. Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives.  In this episode, host Dave Gebroe talks with the epitome of DIY punk spirit (who can also write a pop hook like the best of ‘em), the great Mark Robinson (of Unrest, Grenadine, Air Miami, Flin Flon, Uncomfortable Police, et al), and together they discuss Billy Joel's entire recorded output with commentary, stories, and star ratings for every release. If you're a long-time listener, then you know that Dave has harbored a long-time hatred of Billy Joel…so why the sudden turnaround in taste? Part 6 covers the time after his divorce, a time when most people tend to sit around and sulk, but not Billy—he dated multiple supermodels, settled down with one, and became happy to an extent that managed to prove conclusively that great art absolutely can not be created by very happy people. And he also managed to make and release An Innocent Man and The Bridge.  The goal for this and the next episode was to make great art about bad art, to create two podcast episodes in inverse qualitative proportion to the rock bottom records being discussed. Mark and Dave accomplished their goal. Here are just a few of the many things that Mark discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: That time when Billy's music became more ubiquitous than oxygen, and how he—and more importantly we—dealt with that; The various acts and song styles that Billy co-opted to create An Innocent Man; The unfortunate, damaging effect that An Innocent Man had on Dave's perception of Billy Joel and his music, until only recently; The wildly successful Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 & 2, which went double diamond and whose two new tracks both became hits; The heavy Huey Lewis & The News, Sting, and Cyndi Lauper vibe of The Bridge; And an in-depth deep dive on every song off An Innocent Man and The Bridge.
