Before Lena Waithe was the lauded entertainment multihyphenate we know today, she admired the industry and its icons. Today, her passion for storytelling shines through in everything she does. In addition to being an Emmy Award–winning writer, actor, and producer, she's also founded a production company, and, as of last month, embarked on a new venture as the host of the podcast Legacy Talk With Lena Waithe, distributed by Lemonada Media. In this episode, Waithe tells us about her early icons and why she finds it impactful to have conversations with the legends that paved the way for her career. She also dives into how her experience in the industry has shaped her perspective on how we should allocate movie budgets and explains why she views writing a play as a form of taking back her power. We also discuss style and her point of view on fashion, including her emotional connection to her sneaker collection. Plus, find out how Waithe preps for big red carpet moments like the Met Gala.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this week’s episode of The Waves, Slate Senior Editor Allegra Frank and Slate Production Assistant Madeline Ducharme talk about the latest season of Netflix’s Master of None. The pair digs into the show’s depiction of a queer Black relationship and breakup, and discusses if the show even a comedy anymore. Also: how are we supposed to care about a relationship when we first see it at its end? After the break, Allegra and Madeline go outside of the show to talk about Season 3’s creators, Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe. Ansari and Waithe have both stirred controversy in the past few years. At the height of the #MeToo movement, a now shuttered site called Babe.net reported an alleged unpleasant sexual encounter between a 22-year-old woman and Ansari. In response, Ansari stepped out of the spotlight for a couple years, though he said at the time that the encounter was consensual. Meanwhile, Waithe has worked on several projects, including 2019’s Queen and Slim and Amazon’s Them, that have been accused of propagating needlessly cruel Black violence on-screen. Allegra and Madeline discuss what we’re supposed to do with accusations and situations like this, particularly once the dust has settled. For Slate Plus members, Allegra and Madeline kick off our new segment, Gateway Feminism. They talk about one thing that helped make them feminists. For Allegra, it’s those sugar and spice cartoons, the Powerpuff Girls, while Madeline was heavily influenced by 2010s Tumblr. Recommendations Allegra recommends a seasonal favorite - S’mores flavored Oreos. Madeline thinks you should pick up Kristen Arnett’s second novel, With Teeth. Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Susan Matthews and June Thomas. Additional production help from Rosemary Belson. Our guest this week is Leilah Babirye, a multidisciplinary artist and abstract sculptor living in NYC who transforms everyday materials into objects that address issues surrounding identity, sexuality, and human rights. She studied art at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, where she fled from in 2015 after being outed as gay. She was granted asylum in 2018 with support from the African Services Committee and the NYC Anti-Violence Project, and participated in the Fire Island Artist Residency. Her artwork has been gaining recognition and has been shown in prestigious galleries and museums, including the Parker Gallery and the Gordon Robichaux galleries. We talk with Leilah about the materials and themes in her art, her long and courageous journey from Uganda to the U.S., politics and activism, and we learn about some resources for artists as well as those seeking asylum support in the states. Dr. Richard Waithe (host of RxRadio Podcast and President of VUCA Health) sat down with me to discuss what it is like to grow up black in America. Dr. Waithe shared a lot of his experiences, what it was like to go through pharmacy school and more being black and share some stories and things that impacted him growing up. I know conversations like this aren't easy but I think it's important to have discussions like this. As a pharmacist, I consider this part of our duty to be able to understand and counsel our patients on their everyday lives and understanding what minorities, in this case black Americans, go through is key. I loved having this discussion with Dr. Waithe. I appreciate his openness and willingness to have this conversation with me, a white man, and help open other peoples eyes to the issues around race

In this episode, I got to sit down with Dr. Richard Waithe before he gave a talk on technology in Pharmacy, and personally branding to students of the Student Pharmacist Policy and Advocacy Association at VCU SOP. Before the talk we discussed how he is helping Pharmacy Schools adapt to Covid-19 by offering Virtual APPE's and he answered a few questions near the end that I think will benefit anyone trying to use social media to build a personal brand. The Ad in the beginning is about an initiative started by the National Community Pharmacists Association that is aimed at giving patients and other healthcare professionals a united way to advocate and support legislation for increased PBM oversight. I speak a lot about the importance of advocating for your profession in this mini-series and I can't think of a better way to do that, or a better time than now. Belatedly we catch up with the critical furore around Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn (...now rebranded as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey). After wading through all of ...that... we cover Queen & Slim, out in Australia this week. Written by Lena Waithe and directed by Melina Matsoukas, this film takes head on the themes of 'black lives matter' and police violence head on. Emmet argues Waithe's screenply juxtaposes the figures of Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) and Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith), with the idea of the outlaw so precious to American folklore. Full of sudden bursts of violence and artfully staged sequences that point to Matsoukas' history as a music video director, Queen & Slim is a provocative and rich picture for our times. Also mentioned: Soda and Telecast's Anthony Pollack interviews Emmet Emmet interviews Dr Brian Cremins on Shazam! And the What's in my Bag Flea ep.
Queen & Slim is a 2019 American romantic crime drama film directed by Melina Matsoukas (in her feature directorial debut) and written by Lena Waithe, from a story by James Frey and Waithe. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny, Flea, Sturgill Simpson and Indya Moore. The plot follows two African-Americans who go on the run after killing a police officer during a traffic stop gone wrong. Queen & Slim had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 14, 2019 and was theatrically released in the United States on November 27, 2019, by Universal Pictures. It received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed $44 million. Slim and Queen's first date takes an unexpected turn when a policeman pulls them over for a minor traffic violation. When the situation escalates, Slim takes the officer's gun and shoots him in self-defence. Now labelled cop killers in the media, Slim and Queen feel that they have no choice but to go on the run and evade the law. When a video of the incident goes viral, the unwitting outlaws soon become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people all across the country. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message
Lena Waithe is the screenwriter and creator of the Showtime series “The Chi,” about the South Side of Chicago, but she tells Jelani Cobb, “Getting your own TV show is like getting beaten to death by your own dream.” Her first script for a feature film is “Queen & Slim,” directed by Melina Matsoukas. It’s about a man and woman who are on a not-great first date, during which they unintentionally kill a police officer at a traffic stop that escalates. “I just wanted to write something about us. But unfortunately, if I’m writing about us, how can I ignore the fact that we’re being hunted?” The film arrives in the aftermath two notorious police killings of black people in their homes—Botham Jean in Dallas and Atatiana Jefferson in Fort Worth—only the latest in a long line of similar murders. “I do not want that kind of publicity for my film,” Waithe says. “I am like every other black person. . . . Every time these stories hit our phones, a piece of us dies, because we know that we could be next.”
Hi everyone! Welcome back to Matinee Monday. Today’s film is not for the faint of heart, nor for anyone who enjoys a feel good story. I actually left the theatre struggling with a lot of themes, which makes it a great film for conversation, but is that the same thing as a great film? I’ll let you know about that, and the double standards for films featuring black lives, in just a minute. However, for a few other films related to today’s film, check out our review for MOONLIGHT (Episode #406), which QUEEN & SLIM borrows heavily from thematically speaking, and THE HIGHWAYMEN (Episode #493), which looks at Bonnie & Clyde from law enforcement’s point of view. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the Ocho Duro Parlay Hour. Every episode, the ODPH Crew work their way through a diverse bunch of topics, everything from comics to movies to television to sports. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ODParlayHour and on Facebook @ochoduroparlayhour. Huge shoutout to the ODPH crew for all their support for One Movie Punch! Love watching them climb the Follow Friday boards! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is QUEEN AND SLIM, the poignant drama directed by Melina Matsoukas and written for the screen by Lena Waithe, based on a story by Waithe and James Frey. The film follows the first date of Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya), which isn’t going well at all. On the way home, they’re pulled over by an officer who subjects them to harassment, which escalates quickly until Slim shoots the officer in self-defense. Now the two are on the run, seeking help wherever they can find it, including from each other. No spoilers. I’m a huge fan of the new black cinema. Barry Jenkins. Ava DuVernay. Justin Simien. Jordan Peele. Kasi Lemmons. Ryan Coogler. Steve McQueen. The latter half of this decade has seen a massive explosion in cinema from black filmmakers, featuring black actors, talking about black issues. This explosion deserves thanks in no small part to the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag in 2015, which called out not just the lack of diversity in nominees and winners, but the largely white, male makeup of eligible voters within the Academy itself, and by extension, the lack of diversity in films that actually make it into production and on the screen in the first place. Unless you were Spike Lee or Tyler Perry or a handful of other prominent black filmmakers, your picture wasn’t getting picked up. It’s always why I’ve had a large distaste for the Oscars as a whole, because it’s mostly a bunch of white guys deciding what’s best. The Academy is taking steps to induct more members, and to increase representation, but that’s also going to require film producers (still largely white and male) to hire more black filmmakers at all levels, so there are members to be inducted. The other reason for the explosion in black cinema is the rise of the streaming giants. In 2008, Barry Jenkins puts together a small picture called MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY, which has critical praise, but only if you’re lucky to attend a film festival or take in a very limited theatrical release. However, as the nascent streaming giants were purchasing up rights, the film became available to a much larger audience, along with a massive back catalog of up and coming black filmmakers. Jenkins would return with MOONLIGHT (Episode #406) and what would be the follow up film, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (Episode #465). Edgier content, like Justin Simien’s DEAR WHITE PEOPLE would be discovered and re-discovered, and now more and more voices are reaching Hollywood. Which includes today’s team up of Martina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe. And which also begs the question, what’s James Frey doing here? QUEEN & SLIM is not an easy film to watch. As I said at the top, I left the theatre feeling mostly frustrated on a number of levels, not just with the decisions of the characters, but with the decisions of writers Lena Waithe and James Frey for the larger story. The opening moments are excellent, setting mood and tone leading up to the encounter with the police officer, a self-described routine pullover that escalates quickly, and because of a number of terrible decisions by all characters. It’s necessarily complicated for thematic purposes, since this incident and the discussion it sparks among the characters and on media broadcasts, follows Queen and Slim on their attempt to flee the country. It’s also just one of way too many issues and perspectives of the black experience, particularly with law enforcement, to fit into a single film. When Queen and Slim aren’t dealing with immediate dangers or survival tasks, they’re continuing to get to know each other, touching on so many themes just as quickly as letting them go, verbally sparring with each other through the use of familiar aphorisms. It is great for sparking conversation, but it makes for a cluttered viewing experience. I ended up wishing the themes were subtler so we could focus more on their developing relationship. In particular, there’s a portion of the film involving the protest scene as seen in the trailer, which not only features another character making bad choices, but also splices with another scene that makes for a confusing experience, thematically speaking. It may not be an easy film to watch, but it is a beautiful film to watch and hear. Costumes, colors, and cars all blend really well together with every scene, from the white Accord at the beginning, all the way to the purple land yacht towards the end. While the dialogue can be stilted and the themes frustrating, everything looks great while it happens, well-composed on screen and with excellent song selections along with some light transitional scoring. Nearly every shot is perfectly framed, with many shots reminding me of Jenkins’ particular style, especially intentionally mismatching dialogue and when taking in the many vistas of the Southern United States. It’s a beautiful tragedy of a story. Oh yeah, back to frustrating decisions. The film’s ending is going to be really difficult for folks to take, even as we know what the realistic outcome of this situation would be in real life. The journey is so beautiful that we don’t want it to end, but it does, and abruptly at that, with a lot of loose ends. I think what I would prefer is a longer form version of the same story, maybe a one-season limited series, so we could take our time and explore not just Queen and Slim a little longer in each destination in the Southern United States, but also the effects of that initial incident across the nation. Queen and Slim, and everyone else for that matter, could have longer, more natural conversations about each topic, and maybe interact with their supporters more. I would gobble that series up in a heartbeat. QUEEN AND SLIM is a cluttered, frustrating, depressing, but beautiful film about two folks on the run after defending themselves against a racist police officer. Much like Queen and Slim themselves, the audience rarely gets a chance to catch their breath, as Matsoukas, Waithe, and Frey run us through the garden of issues surrounding people of color and law enforcement, before bringing us to an abrupt, inevitable end. Fans of films involving a good chase, or a modern day tour of the Southern United States, should definitely check out this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 82% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 74 One Movie Punch: 7.2/10 QUEEN AND SLIM (2019) is rated R and is currently playing in theaters.

Another great throwback from the Talk Easy Vault! Lena Waithe has been making waves in Hollywood since she arrived in 2006 from Chicago — you just didn’t know it. Although a writer at heart, Waithe has also learned how to do just about everything else in this industry. She produced Dear White People (the movie), has a role in Steve Spielberg’s next film, and, oh, yeah, created an upcoming Showtime drama called The Chi, due later this year. Most recently, you've probably seen her breaking barriers (and hearts) as Denise in Aziz Ansari's hit Netflix show, "Master of None". Vying for Emmy consideration this fall, Waithe has done a fair bit of interviews in recent months. Just not one like this.

I need to rant! There's some topics that have been heavy on my chest for some time and I need to talk them out. Thanks for listening! In this episode I discuss the one Met Gala look that bothered me most (you'll be shocked!), Kim Kardashian trying to become a lawyer, and my secret obsession - Kardashian/Jenner babies. *CORRECTION* I said that Regina King became an actress at 40 - I meant Regina Hall! Regina King has been acting since she was a teen on 227! I also said the Regina was a teacher before acting - that was actually Jesse Williams! I'm sure other actors used to teach as well though!
