We’re usually celebrating the iconic shows of the past with the people who were there but very, very occasionally DistinctNostalgia will focus in on something contemporary we feel deserves some real attention and this is one of those rare occasions. TWO DOORS DOWN is the BBC’s hidden comedy gem. Here DistinctNostalgia celebrates a ‘current’ quality tv show starring among others, Alex Norton and Elaine C Smith. The series is written by Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp and centres around neighbours living in a suburban street on the outskirts of Glasgow. It’s a hilarious sitcom and DistinctNostalgia highly recommends all four series and the 5th which is being filmed this year. Here Ashley chats to Jonathan Watson who has played Colin since the start... If you'd like to suggest an interview (or reunion) with a past star/stars of any soap, comedy, drama. children's series, quiz show or film, then please drop us a line via the contact us page on the Distinct Nostalgia website at www.distinctnostalgia.com NOTE: The Distinct Nostalgia theme is owned by MIM Productions and composed by Rebecca Applin and Chris Warner. Episode #29 Meet Jonathan Faro, owner of Society Pizzeria and Johnny Gios. Johnathon started his hospitality journey in catering at the age of 23 with Society Catering. With jobs all around Australia their mobile food business couldn't keep up with demand, Jonathan than opened Society Pizzeria on Bondi Road. It didn't take long for that shop to reach capacity selling over a thousand pizzas a week. With his reputation of great service and food, it was meant to be a home run. As Johnathon describes it, he was over ambitious. Things didn't go to plan, but instead of feeling sorry for himself he pulled himself out of the tough situation he was in and opened another shop during the hardest period of his life, that store was his second in bondi called Society Pizza Bar, and ended up being one of his best performing stores to date. He has since opened a new concept called Johnny Gios, a takeaway pizza restaurant that Johnathon describes as your neighbourhood pizza shop, he already has two Johnny Gios locations and plans to open all around Australia and internationally once the borders open.
When I think about my first ever yoga class, I remember that feeling of finally being back in my body again. More than that, I finally felt comfortable in the body I was in. For Jonathan Ferrucci, his first class inspired him to wonder where his body ends and the rest of the universe begins. Jonathan is a professional pianist sharing his experience at the intersection between yoga and music. For him, these are both languages he used to find his authenticity as not only a musician but as a human being. His introduction to yoga came from his mother, but it wasn’t until he discovered the Ashtanga practice in his twenties that he started to really understand the spiritual journey of yoga. The ambitious, performance-oriented side of his mind is balanced by the patience of the practice, and Jonathan shares how his yoga routine transformed into a spiritual practice through Ashtanga. Many of us can relate to Jonathan’s experience of being “outside of the body,” where our minds are constantly wandering in circles of anxiety and stress. Performing on stage can bring this anxiety to a new level, and Jonathan saw yoga as a tool that would help him return to his body. Our yoga journeys are more than a sequence of poses or routines. Yoga is a practice; it is a daily effort in being present in the moment, which forces many of us to dig deep and recognize some parts of ourselves we may have forgotten or misplaced. You cannot predict how the practice will affect you, and Jonathan shares how he was struck most by the silence and how it turned into the biggest lesson he’s learned on the yoga mat. If any of us have ever lost ourselves and are looking for a way back onto the mat, Jonathan’s story will inspire you to come back to the practice with a new perspective. You may be humbled by this new perspective, or maybe you will learn something new. Meet Jonathan at this intersection between self, yoga, and music with a special concert performance on Omstars. All charitable donations will bring music to children in disadvantaged situations. If you have an inspiring story to share, please get in touch. We're talking with Jonathan Pitts who's a bestselling author, speaker and he's an executive pastor at The Church of the City in Franklin, Tennessee. He's also the proud dad and a big dream advocate for his 4 amazing daughters. Jonathan has pursued a number of big dreams… and has encouraged his family to dream big too. In fact, his oldest daughter had a major role in the movie “War Room” at the age of 10! But Jonathan will be the first to tell you that life can bring major challenges and tough setbacks too. In fact, Jonathan was married to his beautiful bride Wynter… who was a successful author and magazine publisher. And just as they were putting the finishing touches on their book on marriage… Wynter passed away unexpectedly… leaving him a widower and the father of four grieving daughters. As you can imagine… this totally rocked his world and the future and the big dreams Jonathan and Wynter had planned together completely dissolved. So he… along with his daughters had to decide how they were going to live life and move forward. And it's been a tough… beautiful… messy… and wonderfully inspiring journey since. Now… Jonathan has written a new book that offers us a real... intimate… raw... and ultimately hope-filled look at grief… and how to live life to its fullest after tragedy. It's called, My Wynter Season: Seeing God's Faithfulness in the Shadow of Grief. We're going to talk about it… and what it takes to continue to dream… and encourage others to do the same on the other side of grief. Let's do this! RESOURCES: Jonathan's newest book: My Wynter Season: Seeing God's Faithfulness in the Shadow of Grief. Jonathan and his wife, Wynter, co-wrote Emptied: Experiencing the Fullness of a Poured-Out Marriage and She is Yours: Trusting God as You Raise the Girl He Gave You. Jonathan now serves as president of the ministry he and Wynter founded together, For Girls Like You––a nonprofit organization featuring a magazine and resources for girls that grew out of Wynter's desire to empower and equip their own girls and to provide parents with the resources and support needed to raise strong women. MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE: As you probably know… this year we're going after launching 1 million dreams this year! It's been amazing to see your response and your support. LOVE that so many of you are on board with this mission. At the same time… we need to acknowledge that in the midst of a global pandemic where many people are hurting from the loss of family members, it's important to speak to the “tough stuff” too. That's exactly why we're talking with Jonathan Pitts… because his unique perspectives can bring comfort and encouragement based on his own first-hand experience with unfathomable loss. In his book, “My Wynter Season,” Jonathan takes his readers on the emotional journey from “love at first sight” to complete blindsided loss in the midst of a season of losing family members (in a period of two years the Pitts family lost 6 family members including Wynter), to finding the beauty in seeing Wynter's continued impact on the world. During our conversation… we talk about the importance of finding hope amidst the hardest days and the deepest grief. Plus, we dig into ways to dream and/or dream again… after experiencing loss. I think you're going to love this conversation. I sure did! DREAM THINK DO MINUTE BY MINUTE: 0:02 What to expect today 2:08 Download the Dream Together App 3:12 Meet Jonathan 5:05 Conversation starts 5:59 When Jonathan and his wife started dreaming 8:45 The best thing about dreamers 11:24 When Jonathan and his wife started building the company together 15:35 When everything changed for Jonathan 19:20 How Jonathan and his family started to move forward 23:22 Jonathans advice for anyone learning how to dream again 30:05 Who Jonathan's new book is for 31:36 Mitch's final thoughts I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Meet Jonathan from Phoenix! Jonathan works as a flight attendant translator/language aficionado (he speaks Spanish and Portuguese). In this episode we talk about the adjustment that airline workers have had to make as well as the risks they are taking during the pandemic. Jonathan is also a proponent of what he calls "extreme listening" which can be described as the willingness to sit down with anybody to hear them out. We talk about this philosophy, how he does it , how people react to it, and the idea (which we both disagree with) that some people should not be talked to. This podcast is based on "extreme listening" and I'm trying to channel the same energy he is. Our shared goal is to inspire more listening in the world. Jonathan Slavin was born on a marine base in North Carolina, and grew up in rural Pennsylvania. A bit of a shy weirdo to his peers, he found his voice when he was cast in his first play. After high school, he landed in New York and performed in some truly abysmal theater, before being cast to play the sexually confused protagonist in “The Best of Schools” at Ubu Rep. From there, he moved to Lincoln Center and then Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Sisters Rosensweig”, to Dallas to do “Six Degrees of Separation”(a production that was visited and subsequently cited by the Dalllas Vice Squad), and finally to Los Angeles, to appear in the West Coast premiere of Larry Kramer’s “The Destiny of Me.” After a few months playing a string of “insert occupation here” Guy television guest stars(Flower Delivery Guy, Fish and Chips Guy, Computer Tech Guy) Slavin graduated to more memorable roles. He has appeared as a series regular on Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Mission Control, Union Square, and voiced Ogo, a neurotic and slightly deranged robot on the cartoon Robot and Monster. He has recurred on Better With You, Family Tools, and My Name is Earl, to name a few. Recent and notable guest stars include Legit, Suburgatory, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds, The Glades, and Perception. His feature film credits include Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Dirty Girl, Hard Pill, and My Mother’s Hairdo. Slavin is an activist, dedicating much of his time to animal rights, and is a longtime vegan and animal rescuer. As a gay man, he is equally committed to LGBT rights, and has twice participated in the California Aids Ride, a nearly 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds for HIV services provided by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. ______________________________________ The Boyz talk with the new Associate Director for American Diabetes Association in Central Washington, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Julie Lockhart.
