In this reloaded episode, I share a powerful conversation with Fritzi Horstman, founder of the Compassion Prison Project. Fritzi discusses the vital importance of creating trauma-informed prisons and communities. She explains how understanding trauma can shift our perception of incarcerated individuals, seeing them not as inherently bad people, but as individuals who have often endured immense suffering. Fritzi highlights the interconnectedness of humanity and the impact of our actions on others, emphasising the need for compassion and systemic change to address the root causes of harmful behaviour, ultimately aiming to end child abuse and foster healing within society.Key Takeaways:Creating trauma-informed prisons and communities means understanding that individuals, particularly those who are incarcerated or living in poverty, are often dealing with significant past trauma and adversity.Shifting our perspective to see incarcerated individuals as people who have suffered, rather than simply "bad people," is crucial for fostering compassion and facilitating healing. We are all interconnected, and our actions and societal structures have a profound impact on individuals' well-being and behaviour. Addressing trauma can lead to a ripple effect of positive change. The goal of the Compassion Prison Project is to end child abuse by raising awareness of how trauma affects brain development and behaviour, encouraging more compassionate and informed interactions.Recognising and addressing our own trauma and reactive patterns is essential for personal healing and for contributing to a more compassionate world.Episode Highlights:01:00 - Fritzi explains the mission of the Compassion Prison Project: to create trauma-informed prisons and communities.02:00 - The belief in our interconnectedness and how that understanding shifts perception when interacting with others, including incarcerated individuals.03:45 - Fritzi shares her personal realisation of how her own past trauma and reactive behaviour impacted her child, highlighting the importance of understanding the effects of our actions.04:26 - The significance of Bessel van der Kolk's book, "The Body Keeps the Score," in understanding trauma, and the realisation that many in prison are deeply traumatised.07:08 - Fritzi discusses Tony Crowe's work with Trauma Talks in Belfast, emphasising that societal division often reflects our own internal divides.About the Guest:Fritzi Horstman is the Founder and Executive Director of Compassion Prison Project. She is a Grammy-award winning producer for her work on “The Defiant Ones”, has been a producer and post-producer on dozens of television projects and documentaries and has directed several films. She believes it is urgent to bring humanity and compassion to those living behind bars and these acts will help transform our society. The moments in NICKEL BOYS that nod to 1958's THE DEFIANT ONES are less direct citations than stylized invocations by director RaMell Ross, who incorporates a number of abstractions and flourishes into the film's visual language. Chief among those stylistic gambits is the film's use of first-person perspective, which kicks off our discussion of NICKEL BOYS' uniquely textured take on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer-winning novel. From there we consider the deeper meaning and intent behind NICKEL BOYS' use of visuals and audio from THE DEFIANT ONES, and where the two films overlap in their ideas about racial justice in the Jim Crow South and clashing philosophies of idealism and realism. Then our returning guest co-host Noel Murray offers a Your Next Picture Show recommendation for another social-issue film from the team behind THE DEFIANT ONES. Stanley Kramer's 1958 feature THE DEFIANT ONES, a film very much of its time, makes multiple on-screen appearances in RaMell Ross' new NICKEL BOYS, a film about the way the past haunts the present. Both movies take place in the Jim Crow-era South and engage with that setting's lopsided ideas about justice, but THE DEFIANT ONES does so from a much more straightforward approach, operating as both a stylish thriller about two escaped prisoners, one black (Sidney Poitier) and one white (Tony Curtis), and an earnest allegory about interracial acceptance. That latter quality makes it easy to lump in with Kramer's other “message movies,” which are often dismissed from a modern vantage point as stodgy and sanctimonious, so we're revisiting THE DEFIANT ONES, with an assist from critic and pal Noel Murray, to see whether it earns or defies that reputation. And in Feedback we revisit our WIZARD OF OZ discussion with a reader suggestion of another child female protagonist who rivals Dorothy when it comes to teary helplessness. First, LEE MARVIN is punching dudes in the nuts and throwing them out of high-rise windows all to get his $93,000 back in POINT BLANK (1967). It's heavy on the testosterone but has lots of psychedelic and French New Wave touches from then-young director JOHN BOORMAN, who went on to make some of the trippiest movies ever made with EXCALIBUR (1981) & ZARDOZ (1974). Also starring Angie Dickenson, Sharon Acker, Carrol O'Connor (Archie Bunker), and introducing John Vernon (Dean Wormer from Animal House). Then SIDNEY POITIER is a prison psychiatrist trying to unravel the twisted psyche of a deranged but dangerous nazi played with menace by crooner BOBBY DARIN. This movie is chock full of the tripped-out dream sequences that we live for on this podcast, all set to an awesome jazz theremin score by Ernest Gold and photographed with intensity by Ernest Haller, the man who shot GONE WITH THE WIND and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. This is the forgotten collaboration between producer Stanley Kramer and Poitier, who also made THE DEFIANT ONES (1958) and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967), but Bob thinks PRESSURE POINT is their best. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Katharine “Kat” Kramer, daughter of producer/director Stanley Kramer. Now, you might have heard of a few films Stanley directed like The Defiant Ones, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Judgement at Nuremberg, On the Beach and a comedy called It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. So it's appropriate that this episode is airing two days after the Academy Awards. Why? Because Stanley Kramer's films have received more than 80 Academy Award nominations, have received 16 Academy Awards and Kramer was given an Academy Award, the Irving Thalberg Award, in 1961. To say the man directed (and produced) some groundbreaking films with actors like Spencer Tracy, Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier would mean you are just scratching the surface of his illustrious career.   We talk to Katharine about everything about the themes of her father's films and somehow, because host Josh Mills' mum starred in It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, we end up talking about that film - a lot. We also talk about Phil Spector – who would have thunk? – Katherine's one woman show, a Mick Jagger tribute album she recorded with many Stones alumni, her career as an actorvist, singing Judy Garland songs to Liza Minelli as a kid backstage, her haunted house growing up, the Kennedy assassination and much more. Katharine is absolutely the most motivated person we've had on this podcast as her career in TV, stage, music, charity and as a member of too many boards to count, will attest. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

As you may know networking events can be long and without no food depending on what event. This will cause hunger to creep in and prevent you from being great at what you do! Here are some tips on how to prevent hunger during a networking event: Eat a healthy snack before the event. This will help to keep you feeling full and energized. Good options include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and yogurt. Drink plenty of water before and during the event. Dehydration can make you feel hungry, so it's important to stay hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks. Sugary drinks can give you a quick burst of energy, but they will also crash your blood sugar levels and leave you feeling hungry later. Eat slowly and savor your food. This will help you to feel more satisfied and less likely to overeat. Take breaks from eating. Get up and move around, or talk to new people. This will help you to avoid overindulging. If you know there will be food at the event, plan your meals accordingly. Eat a light lunch or dinner before the event, so that you have room for snacks and drinks at the event. If you're not sure what kind of food will be available, bring your own healthy snacks. This will ensure that you have something to eat, even if the food at the event is unhealthy. If you're feeling hungry, don't be afraid to excuse yourself from the event to grab a bite to eat. There's no shame in taking care of your needs. By following these tips, you can avoid hunger and enjoy yourself at your next networking event. Whether you marched in the civil rights movement, personally experience, or know a visible minority who continues to experience racism in our society today (sadly, incidents of crimes against humanity, discrimination and racism are still reported regularly), Sidney is a documentary portrait of the late, great Sidney Poitier. Produced by Oprah Winfrey & Derik and directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall), this piece showcases his films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America. Poitier's own words provide the narration of his life. Woven together is a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington to Spike Lee, to Barbra Streisand, and Oprah. Poitier's contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America's hopes for racial justice. Poitier's rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen. Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today's icons, it's clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier. The movie premiered at TIFF 2022. I was there as accredited media working the red carpet. It was an honor to speak with Reginald, and see in-person Sidney's wife & daughters, Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Gayle King relay the power and impact of Sidney Potier, who paved the way for them.

Afeni Shakur was a revolutionary, an intellect and a voice for the people. She became a feminist darling of the '70s, a female leader in the movement amidst the macho milieu of the Black Panther Party. Tupac was a rapper and poet, a political visionary and philosopher who became known as one of the greatest rap artists of all time. In addition to becoming a global sex symbol and media favorite for his outspoken and sometimes outrageous antics, he would eventually become the poster child for modern Black activism. Their story chronicles the possibilities and contradictions of the United States from a time of revolutionary fervor to Hip Hop culture's most ostentatious decade.FX's Dear Mama is both an audio and visual experience. Tupac's timeless message is undeniable as beats evaporate into soundscapes and his lyrics revealed to be mantras of passion and politics. It eschews strict chronology for a style that slides back and forth in time, finding linkages between mother and son, 1970s and 1990s, black activism and hip hop, that highlight how much has and has not changed in the struggle for human rights. Through this technique, the eras speak to each other and melt time away, shifting the dual narratives into one definitive portrait of a global superstar and the woman who shaped him, forever linked by love and fate.Award-winning filmmaker Allen Hughes is executive producer, director, and writer on FX's Dear Mama. Hughes' major leap into the entertainment industry came with his and twin brother Albert's jolting debut as the 20-year-old creators/directors of Menace II Society. His other films with Albert include Dead Presidents, From Hell, The Book of Eli and the documentary American Pimp. Allen's most recent project was the critically acclaimed four-part HBO documentary series The Defiant Ones, the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre.

In a special two-part episode, John Heilemann talks with visionary film and television director Allen Hughes about Dear Mama — the sprawling, spellbinding documentary series about the lives and times of hip hop icon Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni, a prominent member of the Black Panther Party in the Sixties and Seventies — that Hughes has been working on for much of the past three years. The first episode of Dear Mama premieres on September 15 at the Toronto International Film Festival, with the entire five-part series airing on F/X later this year; Hughes's conversation with Heilemann is the first time he has spoken in detail about the project. They discuss the director's tumultuous relationship with Tupac in both of their early years in show business, which led to Hughes being brutally beaten by gang associates of the young rapper; how the relationship between Tupac and his mother shaped his outlook, politics, and attitude toward violence; the hot-eyed feud between hip hop's East Coast and West Coast factions in the Nineties; and the still much-debated circumstances surrounding Tupac's murder in Las Vegas in 1996. In second part of the episode, Hughes and Heilemann explore the director's groundbreaking career, from Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and The Book of Eli to the game-changing HBO doc series, The Defiant Ones, about music-industry titans Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine, as well as Hughes's tantalizing next undertaking: a biopic of Motown legend Marvin Gaye, entitled What's Going On. In this episode,  I sit down with Grammy award winning producer, filmmaker and activist, Fritzi Horstman in a compelling conversation discussing her very powerful documentary "Step Inside the Circle." We discuss trauma, particularly childhood trauma, what it does to the brain, body and spirit, its horrific effect on incarcerated men and women as well as society as a whole. We chatted about the Adverse Childhood Experience Survey (ACE Survey) that helps one discover how much trauma they experienced in their early childhood years.  Childhood trauma is the primary reason why men and women end up in the prison system.  Fritzi went over the benefits for us as a society to have a shift on how we view crime and punishment vs rehabilitation. Other topics covered were:* The power of healing circles* The 13th Amendment and what changes are in order* Increase in inmate wages* Programs to increase a feeling of self worth and belonging* The impact solitary confinement has on young minds.* Gabor Mate's thoughts on why one man with an ACE 10 score ends up in prison, but another family member with a 10 score does not.* Converting prisons to "Healing Centers"* What constitutes "Violence?"* The Compassion Prison Project Letter Writing CampaignAnd Fritzi pressed me with some questions that forced me to take a hard look at some childhood trauma that I experienced and may still be showing up in areas of my life.Fritzi Horstman is the Founder and Executive Director of Compassion Prison Project. She is a Grammy-award winning producer for her work on “The Defiant Ones”, has been a producer and post-producer on dozens of television projects and documentaries and has directed several films. She believes it is urgent to bring humanity and compassion to those living behind bars and these acts will help transform our society. She has a Bachelor's Degree from Vassar College.Step Inside the Circle Documentary:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVxjuTkWQiE&t=47sCompassion Prison Project Website:https://compassionprisonproject.org/Follow Fritzi on Instagram:@Fritzihorstman@Compassion.prison.projectWebsite:www.BetterPlaceProject.orgFollow us on social media:Instagram: @BetterPlaceProjTo follow Steve & Erin on Instagram:@SteveNorrisOfficial@ErinorrisFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com

“The older I get, the more I realize how skateboarding shaped who I am.” Ian Rogers definitely knows how to get out of his comfort zone to land a trick. The switch from innovative music streaming services (Apple Music) to taking luxury brands online (LVMH Group) was a bold one. A strong believer in growing from discomfort, Ian definitely sees opportunity rather than risk. One thing is sure, the man knows how to roll with the times without ever losing sight of his passions, from working with The Beastie Boys to collecting NFTs. Even though he'll tell you that “being early is the same as being wrong”, Ian is always on the edge of things with a unique sense of timing. The key to it all? Doing things with conviction and focusing on the future. Faster, better, stronger would be a good soundtrack! In this episode, Ian shares a few lessons from mentors and his time at Apple Music and LVMH: Get really good at saying no to good ideas, so you can get the important things done. (Apple Music) Focus on three things that will move the needle. (Tony Belloni, LVMH) Back creativity with operational efficiency. (Bernard Arnault, LVMH) Tailor your communication strategy to whoever you are trying to reach. Obsessed with what's next, Ian is way ahead of us and practically longs for the day his passport will be an NFT. In this conversation he tries to catch us up on what we're missing out on, and his latest big leap: Ledger. If “living in the future is cheating”, as the man himself claims, then he is damn good at it!
