THE WINNER—Clang! Clink! Bang! Hear that? It's the sound of all the hardware that Jake Silverstein's New York Times Magazine has racked up in his almost eleven years at its helm: Pulitzers and ASMEs are heavy, people! When we were preparing to speak to Jake, we reached out to a handful of editors who have loyally worked with him for years to find out what makes him tick. They describe an incredible and notably drama-free editor who fosters an amazing vibe and a lover of both literary essay and enterprise reporting who holds both an MA and an MFA. As one New York Times Mag story editor put it, Jake's superpower is his “vigorous and institutionally-shrewd support of skilled reporters with strong voices pursuing projects that were just a little beyond the paper's ordinary comfort zone.” Here's a theory we set out to test in this interview—one that we've floated in our newsletter, The Spread, for years now: Is The New York Times Magazine the best women's magazine out there? Yes, we're talking about the stories they produce under Jake, like Susan Dominus's ASME-winning, game-changing story about menopause and hormone replacement therapy, and Linda Villarosa's feature shining a light on the Black maternal health crisis. But we're also talking about the woman-loaded top of the Times Mag masthead, on which Gail Bichler, Jessica Lustig, Sasha Weiss, Ilena Silverman, and Adrienne Greene reign supreme—and seriously outnumber their male counterparts. And we could spend all day name checking favorite writers, like Dominus and Villarosa, but also Emily Bazelon, Danyel Smith, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Irina Aleksander, Jordan Kisner, Azmat Khan, Pam Colloff, Nikole Hannah-Jones, J Wortham, Wesley Morris. We could go on and on—you get the idea! So, did Jake agree with our women's mag theory? And what is it like to have the deep resources it takes to make these kinds of stories these days? You'll have to listen to find out.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. Print Is Dead (Long Live Print!) is a production of Magazeum LLC ©2021–2025

THE BRAND CALLED US—In the summer of 1995, I got an offer I couldn't refuse. It came from my guests today, Alan Webber and Bill Taylor, the founding editors of Fast Company, widely acknowledged as one of the magazine industry's great success stories. Their vision for the magazine was an exercise in thinking different. Nothing we did hewed to the conventional wisdom of magazine-making. Our founders came from politics and activism born in the ivy halls of Harvard. Our HQ was far from the center of the magazine world, in Boston's North End—“leave the pages, take the cannolis.” And Fast Company was not a part of the five families of magazine publishing. It wouldn't have worked if it was.  I was one of the first people Alan and Bill hired, and as the magazine's founding art director, I could tell Fast Company was going to be big. And it was big. Huge, in fact. Shortly after its launch, a typical issue of the magazine routinely topped out at almost 400 pages. We had to get up to speed, and fast. Its mission was big, too. Bill and Alan's plan sounded simple: to offer rules for radicals that would be inspiring and instructive; to encourage their audience to think bigger about what they might achieve for their companies and themselves, and to provide tools to help us all succeed in work … and in life. Their mantra: Work is personal. The effect, however, was even bigger. The magazine was a blockbuster hit, winning ASME awards for General Excellence and Design. It was Ad Age's 1995 Launch of the Year. Bill and Alan were named Adweek's editors of the year in 1999. It even spawned its own reader-generated social network, the Company of Friends, that counted over 40,000 members worldwide. And it brought together an extraordinary team of creatives who, to this day, carry on the mission in their own way—including the founders. Nearly thirty years after the launch of the magazine, Alan is currently serving his second term as the mayor of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Bill is the best-selling author of Mavericks at Work, among other books, and continues to lead the conversation on transforming business. We often said that Fast Company was the one that would ruin us for all future jobs. It was a moment in time that I and my colleagues will treasure forever. I am thrilled to be able to share that story with you today.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press. Contemporary artist Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, and curator Diego Chocano, slip between places and times, reconstructing the landscape of Botswana in the centre of the city of London, through their filmic installation, It Will End in Tears (2024). Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum's practice spans landscapes and media, encompassing painting, installation, and animation. Their drawings take the form of narrative landscapes, that seem simultaneously futuristic and ancient, playing with conventions of linear time. Referencing Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, and Pan's Labyrinth, a film by Guillermo del Toro, they often draw from literature, theatre, and sci-fi films - particularly in their slippery representations of people and places. Born in Botswana, and having worked in the US, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands, Pamela describes how her work has been shaped by these different contexts. They detail their transformative residency with tutor Arturo Lindsay in the rainforest in Panama, a Central American and Caribbean country on the coast, and how this inspired their representations of volcanic, subterranean, and cosmological environments. Seeing the landscape as ‘another character' in their their works, Pamela challenges the binary of landscape and figurative painting, and Western/European art historical conventions. Though It Will End in Tears is Pamela's first major UK solo exhibition, it is not their first in the city of London; we discuss their relationship with spaces across the capital, and its colonial histories. Curator Diego Chocano highlights how Pamela has both challenged and embraced conventions of Western/European art history, in their artistic and educational practices. We discuss the artist's academic approach, and ‘research' approach to art, which has inspired interdisciplinary collaborations including in the field of science, with theoretical physicist Dr. James Sylvester Gates. He details the artist's interest in performance and artifice, drawing on film noir, wooden theatre sets, and the figure of the femme fatale for this body of work. We discuss how Pamela's self-constructed alter ego, Asme, enables the artist more freedom of creative expression, and the ability to resist categorisation by identity, biography, or subjectivity. Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum: It Will End in Tears runs at the Barbican in London until 5 January 2025. Upskilling of oil and gas professionals in the digital era is a topic everywhere, including the Caribbean island economies. Upskilling means the acquisition of new knowledge and skills, and in digital, this means topics such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, app development, and sensor technology. It's tough enough to acquire new capabilities and stay current in big metropolitan centers. Imagine the challenges in smaller oil and gas producing economies, such as those found in the Caribbean. On-line and distance learning help, but that's not enough. The formal education sector has to play its role, as does industy. But how does this happen? In this podcast, I'm in conversation with Hamlyn Holder, a sessional lecturer with the University of the West Indies and an employee of the oil and gas industry, based in Trinidad and Tobago, one such oil production nation in the Caribbean. Hamlyn has over 20 years of both upstream and downstream engineering experience with nearly a decade of this time dedicated to serving Methanex Trinidad Ltd. Methanex Corporation is the world's largest producer and supplier of methanol to major international markets in North and South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Methanol is a clear liquid chemical used in thousands of everyday products, including plastics, paints, cosmetics, and is a clean-burning, cost-effective alternative fuel. As the Site Reliability Engineer, he ensures the optimal functionality and performance of critical plant assets and is committed to continuous improvement and innovation in the asset management of their methanol plants and air separation units. He currently serves as a Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Engineering Faculty and also at the Caribbean Institute for Quality training the Caribbean workforce in ASQ courses such as Six Sigma Black Belt, Quality Management and Reliability Engineering. He holds a Master's in Engineering and Asset Management from the University of the West Indies, is CAMA Certified and co-founded Cube Root Farms, a company that helps local farmers, schools and communities to adopt modern smart and sustainable agricultural techniques. He is also well versed in developing, enhancing and launching many enterprise management softwares and is a member of many industry bodies such as API, ASQ, PMI , IEEE, ASME and APETT.  Additional Tools & Resources:

(Those of you born since then will have to use your imagination). We're on an ASME panel exploring the future of magazines in the digital age. The moderator, eager to get the discussion off to a lively start, turns to you and asks, “What magazine that we all cherish today is least likely to adapt and survive what's coming?” Without hesitation you blurt out “The New Yorker!” The audience murmurs in agreement. “The Atlantic!” someone shouts from the crowd. More murmuring.I'm not surprised. Neither is anybody else in the room. It's almost three decades ago, and yet we've already headed into a new world of “nugget” media—and the total loss of our collective attention spans. Hell, magazines that feature 25,000-word polemics on topics like the squirrels of Central Park are already dinosaurs, even here in 1998.It's a bleak outlook for an institution—I'm talking about The New Yorker—that claims the following heritage:It has survived two world wars and the Great Depression, it's been led by only five editors, ever, in its 71-year history,it didn't use color—or photography!—until its 67th year when a young, supremely talented, and controversial Brit took over in 1992,and it's now run by a former newsman who had never edited anything except his high school newspaper. But here's the thing: It's 2024 and we're looking at a decimated magazine business. Mighty brands and hot-shit startups alike are dead and gone—or running on fumes. The big publishers are divesting from print right and left. And yet, there is a shining light.Today The New Yorker is busy preparing for its 100th anniversary, with that same newsman at the top of the masthead who has brought video, events, podcasts, print (a magazine!)—and even some branded pajamas—together with the most legacy of legacy brands to create a 21st-century media juggernaut.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Lane Press. Would you rather manage hardness in your boiler with internal chemical treatment or by using pretreatment such as a water softener? Think about the benefits of other pretreatment as well.  I've always considered this one particular line within these guidelines to be a very powerful sentence. Modern digital technologies are vital in driving manufacturing and production performance improvements. Getting the most out of these technologies requires the knowledge and skills specific to their use. Educational courses help in upskilling personnel. The quality of that education helps determine how successfully the learned skills will be applied. Emerson's Sandra Schwarz joins me in this podcast to discuss how quality and compliance with standards are embedded across the broad range of education services and training from Emerson. Give the podcast a listen and visit the Education Services & Training section on Emerson.com for ways to increase your employees' knowledge and skills with a full range of training options. Transcript Jim: Hi all, thanks for joining us today. In this Emerson Automation Experts podcast, we'll look into some of the reasons that customers come to Emerson because of the quality and reliability of our products, solutions, and services. Emerson products conform to many industry codes and standards such as ASME, ASTM, and ISO 9001, and educational services are no different. Today, I'm catching up with Sandra Schwartz, Senior Manager of Education Services. Sandra will share with us more about quality standards for Emerson's Education Services. Welcome, Sandra. Sandra: Hey, thank you for having me, Jim. Jim: Well, it's great that you're here with us. So, Sandra, how would you describe quality from an education perspective and what does it involve? Sandra: Great question. For Emerson, Quality in education is giving our customers the best learning experience possible. So, this means experience about how they learn and enrolling in our courses. It's everything like coming to our facilities and then also having like professional and qualified instructors. And, most importantly, that the content is relevant and engaging. So, to do all of this, we have to have quality standards that include policies and processes that have to be followed by everyone that touches Education for our customers. Jim: Well, that certainly seems like it incorporates that lifecycle from, you know, signing up for it to the instructors and teaching it, and that the content is very relevant to what they're trying to get out of it. So what would you say our customers' primary concerns are regarding quality standards? Sandra: Well, our customers' primary concerns are that they want to be able to fully utilize the functionality and the capability of Emerson products that they've purchased. So, many times, a customer will ask about our processes before ever coming to a learning event. Once we share that we are IACET accredited and that we offer CEUs with many of our courses, then, you know, customers feel more confident that the people that they send to our training events will have a great experience and they know that we at Emerson are dedicated to their success. Jim: That's interesting. So how is Emerson ensuring and addressing high-quality standards for courses? Sandra: Well, you know, great question again. And we do this through our accreditation with IACET. And that stands for International Accreditation of Continuing Education and Training. This is an accreditation that Emerson has maintained since 2008. And this accreditation standard holds Emerson to a higher quality to design, develop, and deliver our training. It also ensures that we have different systems and solutions in place, you know, for us to enroll students to track their progress. To evaluate, are they learning what we intended for them to learn? And we have the ability to report on all of this and look at that data so that we're constantly improving for future customer events. So we have to be audited every year and through those standards and policies, that's how we are able to ensure that high quality for our customers. Jim: Yeah. It sounds like that collection of data and being able to apply that in a continuous improve...

Rendering of Last Energy's 20 MWe installations (Last Energy) Last Energy is an innovative new company governed by a philosophy of avoiding the invention of anything that has not been done before. They have created a business that is laser focused on building, owning and operating small (20 MWe), modular pressurized water reactors and selling the electricity they produce under long term power purchase agreements. On Atomic Show #303, Bret Kugelmass, the founder, president and CEO of Last Energy describes the path he took from earning a masters degree in robotics at Stanford, through the founding and operation of a successful drone company, to a highly respected podcast, through a non profit think tank and into a utility company that has designed a nuclear power plant that can begin operating as early as 2025 with commercial scale repetition starting almost immediately. Where some believe that nuclear fission requires highly specialized equipment, Last Energy has found that pressure vessels, pumps, piping, heat exchangers and valves of similarly high quality standards are widely available from experienced, commercial suppliers. Their systems, structures and components (SSC) use well-accepted ASME codes and standards and are often identical to the SSC that have been used for decades in chemical processing, oil and gas, and other industrial applications. Last Energy has chosen a small number of initial deployment locations, specifically in the UK, Romania and Poland. They are aiming to supply power to major industrial consumers that need somewhere between 20 and 100 MWe. They will connect to their customers "behind the meter". From the customer point of view, Last Energy power will look and act like the electricity they currently purchase from their local utility company. Last Energy systems will have approximately 2 m diameter pressure vessels that can accommodate full length fuel assemblies and standard control rods with proven drive mechanisms mounted on the reactor head. There will be fewer assemblies in the core, and they will be replaced as a whole unit every 6 years. Each plant will have a single steam generator and coolant pump. Kugelmass explains the reasons behind the company philosophy and design choices. He provides a good summary of their business model and their driving motivations. One aspect of Last Energy's plans should motivate US politicians to modify our current export control regime. Even though their plants are designed to be well within the production capability of US manufacturers, the company is studiously avoiding the production of any nuclear component in the US. Export control processes are too burdensome to be economically justifiable. I hope you enjoy the show and participate in the conversation.

Do Drones Have A Place in the Health Industry? Dr. Manish Kumar directs the Cooperative Distributed Systems Laboratory and co-directs the UAV MASTER Lab at the University of Cincinnati. His research interests include Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, robotics, decision-making and control in complex systems, multi-sensor data fusion, swarm systems, and multiple robot coordination and control. Manish and other university Researchers have innovated a way to integrate basic telehealth services into a drone, potentially expanding the bounds of what previous innovators ever envisioned with these two technologies individually.  The research team collaborated to develop a semi-autonomous prototype that can be dispatched right to people's homes. The drones are big enough to carry medicine or medical supplies but small enough to maneuver the tight confines of a home using navigational algorithms developed by UC engineers.” A novel aspect is that the drone will also integrate “cameras and a display screen so patients can talk to health care professionals from the comfort of their home,” in addition to carrying “a waterproof box the size of a small first-aid kit to deliver medical supplies or collect self-administered lab tests.” Manish is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has served as the Chair of the Robotics Technical Committee of the ASME's Dynamic Systems and Control Division, and as an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurements and Control. In this episode of the Drone Radio Show Podcast, Manish talks about the University of Cincinnati's research into drones and the innovative use of drones for telehealth.
