As the Winter Meetings get rolling, the Orioles have made a few moves, and figure to make a few more to try and put themselves into the World Series conversation. They kicked things off by signing OF Tyler O'Neill, most recently with the Red Sox, who figures as a power hitting platoon left fielder. They followed this up with a bit more curious of a move, bringing in former Yankees All-Star catcher Gary Sanchez, who should serve as a replacement for the departing James McCann. Jake and Eric discuss these moves and what they mean for the 2025 season, as well as the moves they'd like to see be made going forward. Hour 4: Keith talks about the Mets 4-1 victory in Atlanta on Monday night. He then is joined by two guests, MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds and Yankees All-Star pitcher Nestor Cortes.
Hosts Peter Kennedy and Andrew Calagna break down all things Yankees and Mets before Pete goes solo to drop some NBA Draft theories. (0:00 - 57:56) Pete and Drew discuss the amazing run by both New York baseball teams - but how there is still some angst in the air. The bickering between Mets and Yankees fans is at all time high. How much smack talk is warranted and should either fan base be worried about what's to come? Is there any false bravado between these two fan bases? What can the Yankees do to make this #1 team even better? And will their pitching sustain? The Mets have more specific needs but have been damn good in their own right. How much better can a power bat and bullpen arm make this team? Plus, Mets and Yankees All-Star predictions. (57:56 - 1:16:43) Pete discusses the ideas behind drafting in the NBA lottery and how it pertains to the New York Knicks. Can you even draft for need in the lottery? How perfect does the fit need to be with RJ Barrett? What is the risk vs. reward with trying to trade up in the NBA Draft. Meghan Picerno steps into the Batter's Box with host Al Malafronte and producer Alan Seales, for Episode 26 of Break a Bat! Meghan is currently playing Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, after having previously played the role in the in the show's touring production, as well as its sequel Love Never Dies. Broadway's longest running show, seeing Phantom is one of the most epic experiences you can have on The Great White Way. In this episode, Meghan talks about her transition from the opera world to the Broadway world, the athleticism behind her performance, and the Yankees' All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman --- who in 2016, carried her Chicago Cubs to their first World Series Championship in 108 years! In that postseason, he posted an impressive 3.45 ERA, multiple wins and no losses, an incredible 4 saved games, and an absolutely stunning 21 strikeouts in only 15.2 innings pitched. Tune in to hear Meghan's thoughts on Chapman's historic run, as well as how baseball and Broadway relate to each other when it comes to performance-driven leadership. Shoutout to our buddy Michael Borowski at The Publicity Office for helping put this one together. Kate Rockwell steps into the Batter’s Box in Episode 20 of Break a Bat! One of Broadway’s perennial All-Stars, Kate is currently starring as Karen Smith in Mean Girls on Broadway, and has mastered theatrical comedy as well as anyone in the game. As Kate closes in on her final weeks in the show after nearly two full years of All-Star performances, she looks back fondly on the role that she originated - which has earned her well-deserved acclaim from audiences and critics, as well as Drama Desk and Helen Hayes Award nominations. Kate's Broadway credits prior to Mean Girls include Legally Blonde, Hair, Bring It On The Musical, and Rock of Ages; and she has made recent appearances on television in FOX's Almost Family. In this episode, Kate takes the boys through some perspective and stories from her decade-plus in the industry, including sharing the stage with Yankee great Mark Teixeira while starring in Rock of Ages! She also talks about “getting in the zone” to bring Karen Smith to life in Mean Girls, the escape that both baseball and theatre provide, and the importance of outlets outside of a very challenging industry - as she is certified by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. A signature edition of the 7th Inning Stretch Trivia also ensues, as she and the Break a Bat! crew share some big laughs over the Broadway and baseball community likening the Yankees’ All-Star closer/diva Aroldis Chapman to Regina George. In addition to everything Kate brought to the Batter’s Box, this was an extra special recording session for our show because the whole gang was there; as our host Al Malafronte was joined by Break a Bat! producer Alan Seales, and Chris Katzmann (co-creator of Break a Bat!) This episode ranks among our favorites to date. A very special thank you to the awesome Lori Wheat, and Her Story Branding for helping put it together. It's a Break a Bat! roundtable! In this week's episode, our host Al Malafronte calls some All-Star panelists to the Batter's Box to discuss all things topical in the baseball and Broadway world. Co-captaining the panel alongside Al is someone who's been instrumental in the the baseball and theatre crossover world. With diverse experience in both acting and athletics, his knowledge and expertise on both fronts is truly invaluable. It's with great pleasure to reintroduce Scotty Katzmann to the Batheads, as our special guest in Episode 18. Scotty is one of the co-founders of Break a Bat!, and the show’s original co-host going back to when it was recorded in Al’s apartment while the two would order a pizza and watch the Yankee game during the spring and summer of 2019. Although a lot has changed with the podcast since his last BPN co-hosting appearances in Episodes 1 and 5, its spirit in which he helped create remains fully in tact, and that shines through in this episode. Also joining Al and Scotty on the panel were: Ellen Adair: Ellen is a veteran in the acting world who has an “unhealthy obsession with baseball,” as she reveals in this episode. Her acting credits include appearances on Billions, Homeland, and The Sinner, and in recent months, she’s become a regular on many fantasy baseball podcasts, as well as a guest host on the MLB Network. Brittany Bigelow: Brittany is the host of A Broad’s Way on the BPN which explores the unpredictability of a life in the theater business and how to find your sense of self through it all. With an acting background of her own, her perspective on performance and the state of industry is both refreshing and needed. Among the topics discussed in this episode: • The Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. • What could serve as Broadway's equivalent of a fantasy baseball league. • The roots of one’s passion for sports and the arts. • Baseball’s Hall of Fame voting results. • Beetlejuice unjustly being kicked out of the Winter Garden Theatre. • Al and Scotty calling the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to task over his agenda to boost TV ratings at the expense of the record books through juiced baseballs. • How the politics of baseball and Broadway can impact its performers. • Broadway’s love affair with the Yankees' All-Star and flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman. • Scotty’s love of the song 'Barbara 2.0' from Beetlejuice, and how he associates it with putting everything on the line in a big game.
