June 9, 2025 | Season 7 | Episode 22The financial world is undergoing a seismic shift that few everyday investors fully grasp. Private credit and private equity markets have exploded from virtually nothing to controlling trillions in assets and thousands of companies—all while operating largely outside traditional regulatory frameworks. We take you on a fascinating journey through Wall Street's innovation cycles, connecting today's private market boom to previous financial revolutions like junk bonds in the 1970s and mortgage-backed securities in the 1990s. Understanding these historical patterns reveals how regulatory changes, market conditions, and Wall Street creativity repeatedly transform investment landscapes—sometimes with dramatic consequences. The numbers are staggering: private equity now controls 11,500 companies (up from just 2,000 in 2000), private credit has ballooned to $1.7 trillion, and venture capital firms manage $1.2 trillion across more than 3,000 firms. Meanwhile, public markets remain comparatively sleepy, with only a handful of significant IPOs this year.Bank executives like JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon express mounting frustration that this massive shift occurred "without any forethought on the part of regulators," creating competitive disadvantages for traditional banks. As this capital migration continues from regulated to less-regulated spaces, investors must consider both opportunities and potential risks. For those navigating today's uncertain markets, we explore defensive stock strategies and highlight companies following the Berkshire Hathaway model of combining insurance operations with strategic investments—including Fairfax Financial Holdings, Markel Group, and Loews—that have delivered impressive long-term returns using variations of Warren Buffett's proven approach.Whether you're concerned about market volatility, curious about alternative investments, or simply trying to understand the forces reshaping finance, this deep dive into private markets provides essential context for making informed investment decisions in an increasingly complex landscape.** For informational and educational purposes only, not intended as investment advice. Film lovers have long heard of the legendary names that built Hollywood into a global entertainment empire - Goldwyn, Mankiewicz, Laemmle, Mayer, Loews. But it was The Schenck Brothers, a ruthless pair of Bowery boys, who worked their way up to launch the Hollywood studio system, creating a lasting legacy of 'star maker machinery" while simultaneously breaking all the business rules. MOGULS: The Lives and Times of Film Pioneers Nicholas and Joseph Schenck (Sept. 24, 2024) is co-authored by Producers Guild of America member and film director Craig Singer, and Brooklyn-based writer Michael Benson (Gangsters vs. Nazis). MOGULS is a noirish, incredible Hollywood history. The Schenck brothers held controlling interests in three major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Twentieth Century-Fox, and United Artists (UA). But chances are you've never heard of them because they preferred to run their global empire behind closed doors. Nick was Louis B. Mayer's boss. Think Mank meets Chinatown and LA Confidential, with a heaping dose of Hail, Caesar! and The Godfather II (of course). Twice as powerful as the Warner Brothers, the Schencks were immigrants who quietly ran Hollywood out of the spotlight, bringing film into a world of blazing color. They were as American as jazz and baseball, as flashy as Gatsby, as cunning as gangsters, who controlled a third of the motion picture industry at their height - and were some of the richest men in America.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Ioanna and I love to leave a meal feeling satisfied. What we often forget to take into account though are the elements of dining at a restaurant that extend beyond the meal itself- the environment, the energy, and even the education you receive on the food you're eating. If you want to feel elevated after a night out, look no further than Loews Chicago O'Hare's Sip & Savor Dinner Series at The Ashburn, An American Gastropub. Hotel Executive Chef Chuck Gillis takes everything he's learned in his 30+ years of experience and puts it into a specially curated dining experience that is only available to the public once in a lifetime. That's right- once it's gone, it's gone! In their Sip & Savor Dinner Series, Chef Chuck partners with a beverage partner to create an intimate meal that is inspired by Chicagoland's rich food & drink culture. We sat down in the kitchen with Chef Chuck to discuss what a Sip & Savor Dinner night looks like and why he takes such care to create a crafted dining experience for his guests that's available one night only! Hear about his culinary influences and how he finds inspiration to bring The Ashburn menu to life season by season, including the May 2024 “Farm-to-Table” dining experience we are attending, with beverage partner Daou Vineyards. Chef Chuck also talks about their upcoming Sip & Savor dinners, which this year take place in May, July, August, and November! It's the perfect outing if you want to try something new & exciting, experience food in a new way, or spice up your date night with a more intimate and engaging culinary show. Everyone wants to feel elevated- and we think sipping your drink & savoring your meal at Loews Chicago O'Hare is the way to do so! Today's guest - Marisa Thalberg - has successfully guided some of the country's most iconic brands through incredible transformations - including Lowe's, Taco Bell, The Estée Lauder Companies. Here are just a few of the leadership qualities I noticed during our conversation - Intuition. Compassion. Empathy. Vulnerability. Have these soft skills traditionally been described as 'feminine.' You bet! And men better join this so called feminine revolution or they have no chance succeeding in today's fast-moving, complex, unpredictable world. www.imperfectleaders.com
The Dow fell 0.42%, the S&P 500 dipped .97% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped another 2.22%, continuing yesterday's slump, and Jim Cramer is taking investors through the market's downturn. Next, Cramer takes investors through Loews Corporation, a diversified family-run business and S&P 500 company with interests in insurance, lodging, energy, and packaging. Plus, Cramer is going Off The Charts to find a bull market somewhere in the volatile market.
