Saw a great post that for sure connects with me and maybe others too.  Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) reminds us to keep this in mind: “I am slowly becoming the person I should've been a long time ago.”  It's a reminder to just keep going. Just keep trying. To not get down knowing that maybe we are not doing things we said we're going to do, wanted to do, promised to do, etc. Powerful stuff for me and maybe for you. I had to pull over in the car to record this as I was not home to do this.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Horse Hippie’s Morning Mantras

Morning Mantra: “The more you do, the more you fail. The more you fail, the more you learn. The more you learn, the better you get.”I'd rather fail over and over trying to do what I love, than settle. There is nothing wrong with making mistakes, they are part of the human experience. Just acknowledge them, take responsibility for them, and learn from them. Then try again. What is the point of being alive if you don't even TRY to live the life you dream of? What is holding you back?Fear?Don't be afraid to fail, be afraid of not even trying.Success isn't overnight. Keep trying and every day you'll get a little better and a little closer than before. It will add up.Remember- the only time you run out of chances is when you give up.#BeWillingToTry #BeHappy #BeHorsey #BeHippie #HorseHippie #MorningMantra #WordsToInspire #InspirationalQuotes #HorseHippieBoutique #SmallBusinessOwner #WomenOwned #HorseHippieBoutiqueQuote: John C. 314: Why We Struggle to Describe Wine Yet Keep Trying with Hugh Johnson

Unreserved Wine Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2024 45:08

Why is it so difficult to describe wine? How did England pave the way for Champagne as we know it today? What do winemaking and gardening share beyond being plant-based? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Hugh Johnson. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you will win a copy of his marvellous memoir, The Life and Wines of Hugh Johnson. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What's behind Hugh's decades-long love for Bordeaux? How did Hugh's first book about trees come about? How has writing about wine and about horticulture influenced each other? Are there commonalities between gardening and winemaking? Where was Hugh's favourite place to enjoy wine? What was it like tasting wine with former Dom Pérignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy? How did England pave the way for Champagne as we know it today? What did Hugh's friendships with Elizabeth David and André Simon teach him about food and wine? What was it like tasting a wine that was made hundreds of years ago? What's the difference between wines of "curiosity" versus "conviction"? Where does Hugh think the future of wine communication will go? What does Hugh hope his legacy to the wine world will be?   Key Takeaways As Hugh observes, the essence of writing is comparing one experience to another. He tries to exploit the wonderful vocabulary of the English language which unites the brilliance of the Latin languages and the German school. However, there are no words that actually match the taste of wine. As Hugh explains that to keep the cork in a champagne bottle they used to tie it with string. The wine fermented in the bottle and the bottle exploded because the French didn't have bottles that would take the pressure. But England did and it's an interesting story. Under King James the First, at the beginning of the 17th century, they had to build a big fleet for the Navy to protect the country. The King decreed that all the good oak trees were for the ships only. So if you're going to make glass, you need a furnace at a very high temperature. So they had to use coal instead of wood. Coal mainly comes from the north of England, in Newcastle. These glass furnaces got really hot, and the glass got darker, but it also got stronger. And they found that it could take the pressure of bubbly wine. Winemaking and gardening both apply human skills, intelligence, and taste to natural objects. He observes who needs 450 varieties of roses. They're not needed, but they interest people, and people enjoy them.   About Hugh Johnson Hugh Johnson is the world's best-known wine writer, having sold more than 20 million books worldwide over a 60-year career. He began acquiring his wine knowledge as a member of the Wine and Food Society at Cambridge University before becoming a feature writer for Vogue and House & Garden magazines.         To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/314.

oin Wayne Giles as he reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this Step 4 session, Wayne shares insights into the common struggle of fear—fear of not being good enough or of constant failure. Self-reliance, while once useful, often falls short in addressing deeper fears and uncertainties, especially for those grappling with addiction. The authors of the Big Book understood that false confidence or arrogance only makes the fear worse, leading to deeper insecurities.Wayne reflects on how true confidence doesn't come from self-reliance alone but from a power greater than ourselves. Many in sobriety have found strength they never knew they had through spiritual reliance. Facing fear head-on, while difficult, becomes manageable with the right guidance, faith, and support. In this Step 4 session, we dive into these challenges and discover how embracing vulnerability and seeking support from a higher power can be life-changing.For more content, please like, comment, and share. Don't stop! Keep asking for help when we need it.  Keep working on yourself to become better.  This hit me hard because it's what I'm trying to do & also, I'm not too worried about those that are not trying as I'm trying to not compare myself to others.  I simply need to know that I will get to where I want to go, as long as I don't stop. Same goes for you!

About the Chefs: Randi Powell is now Chef de Cuisine at Ristorante del Lago, known for authentic Italian dining. Most recently, Powell was The Broadmoor's Wilderness Chef, overseeing culinary operations at Cloud Camp, the Ranch at Emerald Valley, and Fly Fishing Camp. She was raised in Connecticut and attended Colorado College before starting her culinary career in The Broadmoor's Culinary Apprenticeship Program, where her first kitchen was (fittingly) Del Lago. Rocio Neyra Palmer is Chef de Cuisine at Summit, an American Brassiere. Palmer was raised in Peru, where she fell in love with the culinary arts by sharing a kitchen with her grandmother. She formally studied cooking in culinary school but also pursued a degree in farming and agronomy, which has deeply informed her devotion to seasonality and whole-animal, zero waste cooking. She joined The Broadmoor in 2008 as an International Culinary Extern and has held a litany of positions at the resort, most recently as sous chef at Ristorante del Lago. Chef Tia Allen is the Executive Sous Chef of Restaurants at The Broadmoor. Chef Tia has been a valued member of the Culinary Brigade at The Broadmoor since October 2014. Chef Tia originally joined from the Sea Island Resort in Georgia where she spent 6 years honing her skills in various outlets. Throughout her 9 years with us, Chef Tia has ventured into a variety of culinary operations including assisting in the opening of Ristorante Del Lago as a Jr. Sous Chef. While in Ristorante Del Lago, she was instrumental in assisting with the Grand Opening of Natural Epicurean and the continued success of Play within its inaugural year. Chef Tia then joined Summit as a Jr. Sous Chef and operated the outlet as the Interim Chef de Cuisine. In 2018, Chef Tia seized the opportunity to join the Banquets team by accepting the position of Sous Chef of Garde Manger. In 2020, Chef Tia became the Ristorante Del Lago Sous Chef and later excelled as the Ristorante Del Lago Interim Chef de Cuisine. Chef Tia was later promoted to Chef of Garde Manger Banquets in 2021, where she has been instrumental in the success of the Banquets Team. Chef Tia has been a prime example of dedication and hard work throughout her time with The Broadmoor. Subscribe, or die! Just kidding, but please subscribe? Meet Jean Lee! She was the nineteenth engineer at WhatsApp (that was even before it got acquired by Facebook!) and then worked at Meta as an engineering manager for six years after the acquisition. She helped set up WhatsApp's London office and also worked on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her coding journey didn't start there - she discovered tech almost by chance after her family moved to California. She wanted to study art - but after taking art courses at her university, she realized that coding was her thing. She worked at a tiny startup competing with YouTube and a huge corporation, IBM, before she realized which company size suited her best. She became an engineering manager at Meta without ever planning to become one - but when an opportunity arose, she took it. Because how are you ever going to know what you like doing or not if you don't try things? Today, Jean is a cofounder of Exaltitude, providing resources and coaching to software engineers navigating the ever-changing tech landscape and cultivating a community where everyone can grow together. In this episode, Jean shares her best career advice. You'll also find out what it was like to work at WhatsApp during the expansion, why company culture always changes when a company is scaling up, why inclusive hiring practices are important, and what is one thing that juniors never remember they need to do.

Over It And On With It
EP 441: Should You Stay in a Relationship and Keep Trying Even When You Feel You've Tried a Lot? With Kara

Over It And On With It

This coaching call is a beautiful example of when we are so in our heads that we can not hear the truth of our intuition. Today's caller, Kara, feels she is compatible with her partner but that no chemistry exists between them. She asks Christine for guidance in making the decision to stay or go.   [For show notes, go here: Christinehassler.com/episode441].   If you are thinking about leaving a relationship, have you shifted and shown up in the best way possible? There is a difference between talking about what is wrong with your partner and the things you want them to change, and actually being the change that could encourage their transformation. When we become the change and our partner still doesn't meet us, then it makes our decision-making much clearer.    If we keep going back and forth about something, we don't have clarity or we fear dropping into clarity. When making a decision, does deciding one way or another provide you with relief? If you don't experience relief, what is going through your mind, or what story are you telling yourself that keeps you from making a decision? When we don't have clarity, part of us knows that our triggers and patterns are at play. When we take responsibility for our side and we clean up our side of the street, then we can make the decision with clarity.    And, ladies remember that feminine energy is more than being affectionate and being a vixen. That is surface-level feminine. True feminine energy is about leaning into being a queen, making self-honoring choices, and trusting our discernment.    Are you ready to heal your inner child, set intentions, and reclaim your peace, purpose, and joy? If so, begin your 10-week journey on February 29th. Go to ChristineHassler.com/reconnect or support@ChristineHassler.com. Participants also get access to a year of live, monthly group coaching calls. Get $500 off when you use the promo code ‘child'.   Consider/Ask Yourself: Are you trying to make a decision and you can do pro/con lists and talk yourself in or out of it? Do you feel like you are over-masculine are over-feminine and you want to be more balanced?  When there's tension or conflict in a relationship do you use 'I' language or do you blame and project onto your partner, expecting them to change? Is your changing, reacting, and responding bringing out change and transformation in your partner, or are you reinforcing the behavior that you don't like and want to change?    Kara's Question: Kara doesn't know if she should leave her relationship and is having difficulty hearing her intuition.   Kara's Key Insights and Ahas: Her partner wants to work things out. She has broken the relationship off several times. She and her partner do shadow work. They are compatible but have no chemistry. She wants to trust her intuition but goes back and forth about it. They spend a lot of time together. She compares other relationships to hers. She tries to justify her choice. She creates emotional distance when there is a disagreement. She is not relaxed in her relationship. Her masculine energy comes through in relationship.  She wants a man with healthy masculine energy. She is comfortable in control. She feels her relationship is a personal development course.   How to Get Over It and On With It: Stop the back-and-forth. Consider the way she shows up in relationship. Lean into her feminine and her discernment and make decisions from there. Sponsor: Organifi— is the product of choice for those who want to feel healthy without much effort. Have you ever wondered what the right amount of effort to put in with someone is? Should you let them know you'd like to go on a date with them? And what about after the date. . . Should you let them know you'd like to see them again if you felt the date went well but they're not being proactive about setting up another one? Where is the line between showing someone you like them, and chasing someone who's simply not that interested? It can be tricky. But I want to make it simple. You may have heard me say, “Invest in those who invest in you.” But that could leave you wondering to yourself: “Fine Matthew, but so often that means I'm doing nothing because no one is investing in me! And doesn't someone need to take the first step to invest something if anything is ever going to happen?” It's a valid point. I'll show you exactly how to solve this at the end of the episode, so make sure you listen all the way through. --- ►► Claim Your FREE TICKET to This World Premiere Event by Pre-Ordering Your Copy of Love Life Now at. . . → http://www.LoveMythsMovie.com
