Have you ever been ashamed of how much you have? Do you play it on the “down-low” how much more you want? A teacher I’ve learned a LOT from was Peter Drucker. Mind you, I never met him. But, I am mentored by his Protege Ms. Frances Hesselbein. Recently, I read this quote he wrote: “Those who perform love what they’re doing.” It’s my opinion that you weren’t put here on the planet to ever have time to “do nothing.” No, not for people like you and I. Today's Guest is Jason Womack, author of "Your Best Just Got Better" and founder of The Jason Womack Company. "Jason W. Womack, MEd, MA sees the world differently. He doesn’t deny there are 24 hours in the day, but he defies low expectations for what can be accomplished in that time. He won’t refute that life is busy, but he refuses to compromise when it comes to increasing productivity and maximizing time for the things that are most important. How does he do this? Jason is, above all, a teacher, but his teaching takes many forms: international speaker, productivity coach, and author of the business development book: Your Best Just Got Better: Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More, (Wiley, 2012). His clients are more succinct in describing him: “Jason is a force of energy.” He provides practical methods to maximize tools, systems, and processes to achieve quality work/life balance. He has worked with leaders and executives for over 16 years in the business, military and higher education sectors. He thrives on working with people who know they have more to do in life. These are the kinds of people who are already motivated and want help in achieving all that they’ve set up as goals for themselves. Jason focuses on creating ideas that matter. He strives to improve the way leaders think about implementing solutions. He focuses in on customizing each person’s productivity and create systems that are sustainable in everyday workflow. Jason shows that working longer hours doesn’t have to be your only choice to increase your productivity and performance. He teaches practical solutions to everyday workflow that will free you up to focus on your bigger leadership goals and projects. Jason is the founder of Get Momentum and The Womack Company. He lives with his wife Jodi and dog Zuma in Ojai, California and is an avid bike racer and triathlete." Click here: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/your-best-just-got-better Here’s a quote by Lois McMaster Bujold “Experience suggests it doesn’t matter so much how you got here, as what you do after you arrive.” Isn’t it true that every now and then, a little luck is all you need. I know there are 2 things you can do to increase the likelihood good things will happen to you. Each one puts you in a better position to gain momentum and achieve your goals. In this episode, I’ll tell you all about how to be in the right place at the right time In the next episode of this series, I’ll tell you how important it is to get current; You’ve got to clean the slate because it’s hard to take on more when you’re already buried. Let me start with a story... During the winter of 2012 someone told me: “You’re so lucky, you got a book published.” I gotta tell you, it has stuck with me ever since. Whenever I work with a small business owner or a newly promoted manager, I think to myself, “How are they managing - and creating - their luck?” So in this podcast I want to tell you step by step how I created this “lucky” experience. And, it all starts from the cliche “ Be in the right place at the right time.” Take those two pieces of advice, one at a time... RIGHT PLACE: This means that you’re getting out, you’re putting yourself in a position to meet people, to see things, to do things. Here’s a question for you: Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen? Click pause on the podcast, and answer that question. Here it is again: Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen? RIGHT TIME: You’ve heard the saying, “Timing is everything,” right? Well, here’s what I know - and trust: Luck doesn’t happen EVERY time, but it could happen at ANY time... Just a few weeks ago, in New York City, I met a woman in the elevator as we were traveling down to the lobby. Between the 7th floor and the 1st floor, we shared a conversation. As the doors opened, she said, “Do you have a copy I can buy right now?” Yup, my “elevator pitch” worked that day! Was I lucky? Nope… right place…right time. Let me tell you the story of getting “lucky” and getting my book published. On March 12th, 2011… I was at a conference, it was rainy morning, and as I reviewed the conference schedule I saw a meeting titled, “From Blog to Book.” The breakout session was at a hotel a 1.2 mile walk away from where I was. So, I had a choice… The easy thing would have been to choose a different breakout, and skip that one. I mean it was cold, rainy and windy outside…not a great day for a walk. But, as the saying goes, “You’ve got to play to win.” So walk I did. At the end of the session I introduced myself to the three book publishers who were the panelists, and gave them my card. I had been writing a blog, I said, and now I wanted to write a book. They all smiled…one guy even said, “Good luck with that.” An hour later I was back near the main conference center, about to cross a street when I looked up to see Matt, one of the publishers on the panel. So, I reintroduced myself, told him again about my plan to publish a book, and even said, “I’ve started a book proposal, can I send it to you?” He gave me his card - again - and said he’d take a look. And that put me in to action. You see, over the previous 6 months, on again/off again, I’d been working on writing a book proposal. I’d even submitted a version of it to another publisher, and NEVER got a response. So, when Matt said he’d look it over, I knew I had to act fast… I called Jodi, said I’d catch up later that evening, went to the hotel room, and worked for 4 hours straight to finish a version of the proposal I could send to Wiley Publishing. I clicked send, and met Jodi for dinner - That was March 12th. On March 21st - I got a clarification email from Lauren, an editor at Wiley, asking me just a couple of questions. I received that email at 6pm while I was in Keene, New Hampshire. I changed my dinner plans and sent a revision of the proposal the next morning. On April 4th, I opened my email inbox to see an email titled, “Welcome to Wiley.” I was in Chicago that afternoon, getting ready for a seminar the next day with a world-wide organization named, the “Institute for Management Studies.” Can you guess what I put in my introduction THAT morning? For the next 4 months, I traveled to more than 20 cities, visited 4 countries, and presented 39 Leadership Workshops for Fortune 100 companies, universities and even a not-for-profit organization in New York City. Meanwhile, I wrote…and wrote…and wrote. On August 24th of 2011, I submitted the Final Draft of the book, Your Best Just Got Better and on February 7th of 2012, my book was published. In less than 10 months I went from, Blog to Book. And that…is how I got lucky…

You’ve probably seen or read the title of my book, Your Best Just Got Better and what I find is that the best leaders are changing things by asking, “How could this be better?” This month over at Get Momentum, we’ve been learning about productivity through technology. Most people slog through their partly working systems, they put up with slow and inconsistent ways of doing things. In these cases, we need to look at the situation and figure out what’s going on. Consider your organizational system and where it’s supporting you. And lastly, if this podcast has been useful for you, make sure that you subscribe in iTunes, and review us in the iTunes Store as well!

What’s the biggest lie you remember someone telling you when you were young? Me…It was when someone put it into my mind that I could say “It’s not fair,” and that it would somehow excuse away whatever was going on. Sure there are negative things, there are hard things, there are challenging things that happen. But, when it comes to life being or not being fair, I think there is more to the puzzle than just words. In this podcast, I’ll share with you something I learned while standing in line waiting to deposit a check with my uncle. Sure it was almost 30 years ago, and I’m continuing to tap in to the lesson behind the memory. I hope it helps you find your own version of my story, the time I can look back on that I learned that what you step in to is what you get. Show up, do good work, and stay in touch. That’s a mantra I talk about in the book, Your Best Just Got Better. And, after you listen to this episode of the podcast, I hope you’ll look around and find a new place to “show up.” Best wishes to you!

Potential…How do you define it? And, how do you FIND it? If you’re over 40 years old listening to this podcast, you may have heard this as a kid, “You’re not working to your potential.” (If you’re not over 40, ask someone about “parent - teacher conferences” of the 1970s and 1980s. I believe all my teachers were taught to tell EVERY parent that their child wasn’t working to their potential!) In this podcast, I’m going to share with you one of the most important activities you can do to: Step One: Identify if you’re ready to reach your potential Step Two: Collect the information you need to reach your potential Step Three: Take the first step necessary to reach your full potential In celebration of the 150th episode of the Your Best Just Got Better podcast, I’ve put together a special bonus course just for podcast listeners. Of course, some requirements apply; listen in, lean in, and achieve more!

139: How Limits Make You More Productive

Your Best Just Got Better

As you listen to this episode of the Your Best Just Got Better podcast, I hope you will take time and really consider all the different aspects of how limitations may actually help you be more productive. At the beginning of the podcast you will hear me talking about a very influential book in my bookcase, it is called Tuesdays with Morrie. And it is an amazing example of how by having known limitations it was actually possible for the author, Mitch album, to have an income relatively rich connected experience. Now, I’m not going to go into detail in this blog post about that book, however, it may be worth it for you after you listen to the podcast to consider picking up at least an online version of that book. In this podcast, you'll learn how to use limitations to get ahead. For a few moments, consider the kinds of things you KNOW you have in limited supply: Resources Money Time Just over a week ago, I posted a Discussion Prompt for the global community of GET MOMENTUM members to consider. For several days we discussed this topic of limitations and productivity. As your coach, I’d like for you to consider the impact - both positive AND negative of these kinds of guidelines/groundrules/limitations. Now, the results of the poll I posted on our discussion forum indicate that people are split…about 50/50. Almost half all members say that constraints can actually limit productivity, while others say that these very limits - some call them guidelines or boundaries - create the conditions for freedom and creativity. Now, I want to share with you what I do to make it work to my advantage. I’ll do this by giving you an example, and then detailing exactly what I do to make it work for me: 1. Since my wife and I work together - we’ve run the Womack Companies for more than 7 years - we only get a few blocks of time together each day to really be with each other. There are days, in fact where from morning till night we’re both super-engaged in what we’re doing; it’s up to each one of us to make time to connect on the being level each day. So, we do this thing where when one of us returns (she from running errands in town, me from going out for a run, or some such thing), the one who has been home walks outside to celebrate the return! So, I’ll hear Jodi’s car pull in to the driveway, and that’s my cue: Zuma (our black lab) and I walk outside and welcome Jodi home. 2. Articles, podcasts, interviews…each one has a deadline, a time when it’s due or else! So, once I find out when a client would like something, I write it on my calendar to be due 24 hours EARLY. I don’t do this so I can let the reminder float those 24 hours; no, I actually turn whatever it was that was due in early; with a note. I ask, “Will you please look this over/read this/watch this/listen to this, and let me know first thing tomorrow if there is Anything I can add to make it better for you. Wanna know something? It’s about 5 times out of 10 that they DO get back to me with some positive feedback. I edit/add to it, and voila, it gets better! If you are facing some limitations today or this week, here are the steps I recommend you take: 1. Acknowledge the limitation. 2. Ask yourself, “How can I be as or more productive even though I’m limited?” 3. Break the “thing” (the project, the task, the issue) in to a 15 minute activity. 4. Actually set a timer, and work on THAT thing for just 15 minutes. (Email me and I’ll send you my favorite countdown timer.) 5. At the end of the day, look back and acknowledge exactly where you DID make progress. I promise you’ll have SOMETHING come to mind... I mentioned that this was a discussion we had over about a week in the GET MOMENTUM global discussion forum. If you have anything you’d like to talk about when it comes to this topic of constants, productivity, time management and professional performance, let me know…I’d love to chat by phone or email!

138: How to Achieve Important Results

A dear friend of ours just moved away from Ojai, and on a run we took together along the river here in Ojai a week ago, I asked, "How do you achieve on important goals?" Over the next 5 miles, we circled around that topic. One of the comments that I remember from the conversation was, "Is the goal believable?" It got me thinking; I mean, what exactly does believable mean? You see, in this week's GET MOMENTUM Ojai Winter Leadership Retreat (getmomentum.co/retreat) we are talking about a very important aspect of human performance and professional productivity: Expanding the comfort zone. Are you going to watch any of the Olympics starting today? If so, you will see athlete after athlete who has spent a lifetime expanding their comfort zone. Fortunately for us, we can do this to a lesser degree than the physical effort they all put in; we can do it with our minds and step in to bigger visions of ourselves, achieving bigger and more important goals. In today's podcast, you'll learn THREE ways to achieve on your important results. 1. Suspend Belief 2. Act As If 3. Ask, "How could this happen?" I talk about a book I read (and have since re-read and talked about in almost every seminar) called, "Don't Shoot the Dog." (See page two of these recommendations: bookswerecommend.com). The entire book is about how to shape/guide behavior so that more of what you want to have happen…happens. The quote I read in this podcast is one that has stuck with me since I was a high school teacher in 1997! After you listen to the podcast, please do jump on over here and give it a rating. The Apple iTunes store recently put the Your Best Just Got Better podcast up on their home page. Please help us keep it there by giving it a rating and review! Thanks in advance. “When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.” ~Anthony Robbins Tony Robbins should know a thing about being thankful. When he speaks to audiences, he tells frequently of his humble beginnings, the gratitude he had in those who helped him survive then thrive, and the self-beneficial results of his giving back to his community and others. During this Thanksgiving holiday week, now's the time to think about how your productivity is enhanced by being grateful. Don't believe me? Dr. Robert Emmons, psychology researcher, at UC Davis, has studied gratitude and well-being, and it shows that productivity toward goals increases with exhibiting more gratitude in your life. As the studies summary of findings states on the research department's website [ http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/Labs/emmons/PWT/index.cfm?Section=4 ], those "who kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals." And, "daily gratitude intervention (self-guided exercises) ... resulted in higher reported levels of the positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy."  So, how might you use gratitude practically in your own productive life? Lisa Peake on her blog at PeakeProductivity.com offers a great suggestion: "write down a few things you are grateful for each evening. Start with this evening and see where it goes from there. You may be surprised at how much you have to be thankful for." Jason Womack, author of Your Best Just Got Better [ http://amzn.to/1crZDmn ], has a practice of mailing a daily thank-you card…this brings tangible rewards in responses of offers to collaborate, keeping you top of the mind with your audience, and the brain's release of dopamine (those are the good brain chemicals that make you feel great) that you get from making someone's day brighter. While I opt to sending out thank-you emails more often than printed cards to mail, the technique is still quite powerful for me. And, with all this talk of gratitude let me take this time to say, thank you for listening to ProdPod! I am grateful everyday for the thousands of listeners a month who encourage me with compliments and stories of how ProdPod's advice has helped them, recommend new topics, and suggest improvements to the podcast. You all help me make this possible. I hope you've enjoyed this ProdPod episode, Happy Thanksgiving and here's to your productivity success…in two minutes or less!
