New York Times writer Arthur Brooks once cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for his in-laws in Spain. Over dinner, a couple of questions were asked. The first, “What does this beast eat to be so filled with bread?,” and then, “Should you celebrate this holiday even if you don't feel grateful?”The first question is just funny. The second should give us all pause. Being grateful is a state of mind. It's intentional. Too many times, we get caught up in what we don't have, and let's be honest, as Americans, we have a lot. In Psalm 97:12, we read, “Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones, and give thanks to his holy name.”Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California Davis says, “There's a magnetic appeal to gratitude,” and that it speaks to a need that's deeply entrenched. In the Bible, there are powerful examples of people who were grateful for everything God had given them.In First Samuel, we read about Hannah, who was childless until her sustained prayer moved God's heart. When she gave birth to Samuel, she was so grateful that she took him to the temple and dedicated his life to service to the Lord. In the gospels of Matthew and Luke, a Roman centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant who was deathly ill. Though Jesus offered to go to his house, the centurion was so appreciative, his faith compelled him to say that he knew Jesus could heal the servant without traveling to the home, and Jesus rewarded this gratitude by healing the servant in just that way.Gratitude multiplies itself. Once you become intentional about practicing gratitude, you practice it more and more, and in turn, your faith grows so much that others notice, and in becoming this kind of example, you'll never have to ask if you should be grateful, even if you don't feel like it. You'll feel like it all the time. Let's pray.Father, we want to practice daily gratitude for all you've graciously given us. Praising you with our prayers, and being intentional with our gratitude honors you and settles our hearts. In Jesus' name, amen.Change your shirt, and you can change the world! This wonderful book deals a lot with gratitude that can come from loss and grief. Gratitude Works and Little Book of Gratitude by Robert Emmons. These two very practical books were written by Emmons, a researcher who has studied the benefits of gratitude, how to develop it, and sustain it. When we experience life as a gift, then we, as the receivers of the gifts in life, naturally have gratitude. Emmons and others have shown that having gratitude benefits our emotional and spiritual lives, as well as our physical well-being and our prosperity. Gratitude multiplies itself with its impact. When we yield to being in need of others and God, and experience the effect of needing, we receive a yield, or a harvest of benefits. Not only do we have an expectation of good things in our lives, we also are able to recall good things in times of trouble. For example, recalling or remembering times when we received something good can help us persevere in troubled times. We can hang on to hope because of remembering. SF Mercantile began in 2008 with the objective of producing high-quality San Francisco gifts and keepsakes designed by local artists. Their products celebrate the vibrant and diverse culture that is unique to California, and all of their items are designed by artists who live in the San Francisco Bay area. The company was started by Robert Emmons, who saw a niche in the market after working on a project to revamp the gift shops at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park and Coit Tower. Both of these outlets were in terrible shape, and the assortments consisted of the cheapest of low-end souvenirs (since then the Japanese Tea Garden has been transformed by a new concessionaire, and Coit Tower will hopefully follow suite soon when it changes hands). While trying to plan a new assortment, it became clear that there was a very limited assortment available to retailers and a need for a better line of San Francisco mementos that are trendier, updated and designed by local artists who know and love the city. After many years of designing products for other retailers, Robert decided it was time to leave the corporate world behind and create a product line of his own, so in 2008 he began collaborating with other local designers, partnering with the best factories in the industry, emptying his savings, and then converting his garage into a makeshift warehouse; SF Mercantile was born.SF Mercantile launched their line with 12 San Francisco themed items in the spring of 2009 and since then have grown their product assortment to hundreds of designs, including San Francisco, Wine Country, Sausalito, East Bay/Oakland, Coastal and General California, as well as New Mexico, Arizona and Lake Tahoe. They also design and produce custom products for customers throughout the US and are currently working on new SF Mercantile designs that will be available later this year. Here, Robert shares how his career background set the stage for him to build out the SF Mercantile brand. Robert and Michelle discuss the launch of his product line and how it's expanded over the years. Robert also shares details of his new retail space, how he's learned to delegate responsibility to others, what holiday looks like for SF Mercantile, and his transformational work within the San Francisco community.Cadeau Ami Agency is solely a road rep agency of 10+ associates that handle the state of CA, AZ, HI, and parts of Nevada for many of their 23 or so boutique/gift brands, such as Chive, SF Mercantile, Sock it to Me, French Broad Chocolate, Pomegranate, Calypso Cards, Good Juju, Ryland Peters & Small, Kei & Molly and has been a part of the industry for over 30 years now. What's Inside: How Robert built the SF Mercantile brandAll about Robert's new retail spaceRobert's work within the San Francisco communityMentioned In This Episode:SF MercantileSF Mercantile Store on InstagramSF Mercantile Store on Facebook

Table of Contents The Importance of Cultivating Gratitude Benefits of Practicing Gratitude Overcoming Barriers to Gratitude Five Steps to a Daily Gratitude Practice Transforming Challenges with Gratitude Conclusion The Importance of Cultivating Gratitude Gratitude is a powerful emotional trait that extends beyond a simple "thank you." It involves recognizing the positive aspects of our lives and appreciating the efforts of others that contribute to our well-being. Developing an attitude of gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance that surrounds us, fostering a more positive and satisfying life experience. Benefits of Practicing Gratitude Scientific studies highlight numerous benefits of practising gratitude regularly. These include improved sleep quality, enhanced immune function, self-confidence, and stronger interpersonal relationships. Regular gratitude practice also promotes emotional stability and can lead to long-term happiness and contentment. Overcoming Barriers to Gratitude Practising gratitude can be challenging in a society with a negative bias. Media often amplify negative news, making it harder to maintain a positive outlook. Additionally, comparing ourselves to others can hinder gratitude, as it diverts our focus to what we lack rather than appreciating our unique journey and accomplishments. Five Steps to a Daily Gratitude Practice Gratitude Journal: Jot down ten things you're grateful for every day. Consistency is key to ingraining this habit. Verbal Gratitude: Express what you're thankful for out loud in the form of prayer or affirmation, acknowledging the love and goodness you receive daily. Share Your Gratitude: Communicate your gratitude to those who matter most in your life, either through letters or face-to-face conversations. Gratitude Meditation: During meditation, focus on the people and events you're grateful for and send them positive thoughts. Reframe Challenges: When faced with difficulties, find the lessons within and express gratitude for the growth and awareness these experiences bring. Transforming Challenges with Gratitude Gratitude offers a powerful framework for reframing negative situations. By identifying and appreciating the lessons within challenges, we can transform adversity into opportunities for personal growth and greater wisdom. This shift in perspective empowers us to embrace life's complexities with an open heart. Conclusion Cultivating an attitude of gratitude requires intentionality and practice, but the rewards are immeasurable. You open the door to a more positive, resilient, and joyful life when you integrate gratitude into your daily routine. Take action on the practices shared in this episode and observe the transformative effects on your overall well-being. Pascale --------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT --------------------- Episode 350: Unlock True Happiness - 5 Steps To A Daily Gratitude Practice Hello, beautiful souls. I am Pascale Gibon, your host, welcoming you to episode 350 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Since we are halfway through the year, let us dive into the importance of cultivating gratitude. All this means is that gratitude must become a customary practice in your everyday life and not just an occasional acknowledgement. The mindset you develop with appreciation is that life happens for and through you daily. When you are grateful every day, you acknowledge the daily blessings and remain in a positive energy and mindset. The more positivity you attract into your life through your attitude of mind and heart, the more blissful your life becomes. Robert Emmons, who is a proponent of gratitude research, defines gratitude as follows: An affirmation of goodness. A way for us to acknowledge that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. We are usually grateful to someone for something. Are there benefits to gratefulness? Recent mental health research found 35 benefits of practising gratitude regularly. According to current scientific studies, cultivating gratitude contributes to an individual's character development and overall well-being. There are many health and mental benefits to gratitude, to name a few: better quality sleep, boosted immunity, relieved depression, self-confidence, patience, optimism, resiliency as well as enhanced relationships. A regular practice of gratitude can lead to long-term emotional stability and contentment. Just imagine the effects of a grateful heart versus an ungrateful one. The former is loving and open, and the latter is contracted and resentful. Practising gratitude daily improves our well-being and makes us stronger. Gratitude leads to true happiness, and let me encourage you to make it a habit. As we go through our day-to-day lives, we usually take things for granted, and whenever things go wrong, we immediately fall into the trap that life is happening to us. Moreover, there is another trap: a mind drawn to negativity instead of positivity. It can be challenging to be grateful in a negativity-bias society. The media knows that sensational negative headlines sell more than positive ones. Since individuals are more attracted to negative news than positive ones, this reality prompts us to reinforce positivity in our lives with the gratitude practice. Another barrier to gratitude is comparing ourselves to others. When we compare ourselves to others, we fail to be grateful for what we have and our accomplishments. A comparison mindset leads to discontent, jealousy and a negative self-image. So, how can we incorporate gratitude into our daily lives to enhance our character and well-being? Here are five ways to cultivate gratitude daily: 1. Gratitude Journal: Hold a gratitude journal and write down ten things you are most grateful for every day. Since this is a daily routine, it requires discipline and consistency. For this reason, I like the next practice if you fall out of the journal practice. 2. Verbal Gratitude: Make it a daily habit to say out loud what you are most grateful for in your life. It could be in the form of prayer. Additionally, make it a routine to acknowledge all the love you receive throughout the day. 3. Share your gratitude: Share your love with the people you are most grateful for in your life. You can write them a letter or tell them face to face. 4. Gratitude Meditation: Practise a gratitude meditation. As you meditate, reflect on the things you are most grateful for in your life. For example, bring the people to mind you appreciate the most in your life and send them gratitude. 5. Reframe Challenges: Reframe negative situations into positive lessons: Life happens, and we encounter challenging situations. However, you can take a deep breath and reframe the negative situation into a positive one. We express gratitude when we understand the lessons behind challenging situations that enable us to grow in wisdom and awareness. Those lessons are priceless. As a practitioner of gratitude through daily prayer, I now also use gratitude throughout the day. Whenever I am aware of the expression of love, I appreciate that love and say “thank you” to the invisible and visible help I receive with appreciation. It is proven that the attitude of gratitude has many psychological and physiological benefits. How could you incorporate more gratitude into your life? Would a gratitude journal or meditation work for you? Is expressing words of appreciation to others something you need to do more often? Do you need to send a letter to someone to let them know how much they helped you and how much you love them? Take a moment to reflect on gratitude and examine whether you have adopted an attitude of gratitude in your life to experience more positivity. If so, let me congratulate you. If not, it is time to act on the content I have just shared. Every year In November, I run the Gratitude Experiment 7-week Challenge, keep an eye out on my website pascalegibon.com for the forthcoming dates. It would be great to have you as a participant. I look forward to connecting with you next Monday and wish you a fantastic week of gratitude. I am sending you lots of love and light.

With the holidays around the corner this episode with Yo is inspired by some of her learning about gratitude while podcasting. And whenever she wants to learn more about an emotion, she always goes to Brené Brown and her book, Atlas of the Heart. “Gratitude enlivens the world.” Gratitude is the emotional expression of the interchange of love between giver and receiver. So of course we're looking for more of that in public—it's the very evidence of giving to one another, grace with each other, beneficence for one another. In this conversation, Miroslav Volf and Evan Rosa discuss this remarkable interchange of love between giver and receiver that leads to gratitude. They discuss the meaning of gratitude in emotional, moral, and theological terms; and he introduces a variety of views on gratitude, from the story of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, to Thomas Aquinas, to Anthony Kronman's “born-again pagan” critique of Christian gratitude, and finally Martin Luther's take on gratitude which draws on the Magnificat of Mary, which Miroslav expounds. Beth Graybill - This week we kicked off a 3-part series on Gratitude. We talked about what gratitude is, what it isn't, and how we can use gratitude as our guide this holiday season. Much of Beth's description of gratitude comes from the work of Brother David Steindl-Rast and Dr. Robert Emmons. And the list of questions near the end is from a recent social media post by Onsite Workshops on “9 Questions To Ask Yourself to Start Planning For The Holidays Today” (Oct 28). We are counting down to one of our favorite days of the year, and that's the International Day of Happiness. It takes place on March 20th. To celebrate, we are counting down with a positive activity to celebrate – and that's our own digital Wall of Gratitude. Our host Dr. Kortni Alston discusses the scientific benefits by the leading scholar in gratitude, Dr. Robert Emmons, published in his article by the Greater Good Science Center. Gratitude can help increase well-being. Learn how to do this and share your gratitude on our wall.
A Thanksgiving Holiday Gift to you:Each morning I start my day with a gratitude meditation that grounds me, brings me back to "center" and "balances" me for the day as much as possible. This process helps me to focus on things that matter to me and still allows space for what hurts at the same time. On this Thanksgiving, I want to thank you all, each and every one of you, for being a part of Hope to Recharge, for joining me in my journey and being a part of our mission. I am grateful and appreciate all of your feedback, critique, inspiration, support, and most importantly, for being you. This audio episode is my personal custom gratitude meditation that I practice, and I encourage you to listen and practice along with me, so that you can begin your morning with it and end your day with it. This meditation is intended to be listened to when you have a moment of quiet and calm, and without disturbance, to allow you to focus on the words, breath and devote time to achieve its full effect.Remember: no two days are the same. Some days you will feel words that will be more powerful and meaningful and some days they might feel painful. Sit with those feelings and feel free to customize and/or change the words along the way. I personally know how verbalizing and internalizing the sense of gratitude created a transformative shift in my life, moving from deep depression and trying to embrace the moments that are ordinary to extraordinary. I hope you enjoy this and I hope you "gift yourself" the gift of infusing your day with gratitude.Studies show that gratitude "vibrates" at 540 MHz and being grateful, falls on the same level on the chart as love. It is one of the highest vibration frequencies one can be. The more time spent in the frequency of gratitude and love, the more your body's frequency rises and the healthier you become. Why not "gift" ourselves with something that we can easily give ourselves and choose each morning to tap into the highest frequency God created in the universe? We each have many things that we don't have control over, but we do have the ability to control our mind. Let's tap into the gift of gratitude and have the benefits of the Gratitude effect.Thank you again for choosing Hope to Recharge at this moment and have a meaningful day and a Happy Thanksgiving holiday. With much love and gratitude,-MatanaIf you need more support in your mental health journey please reach out to us in our private Facebook group. New York Times writer Arthur Brooks once cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for his in-laws in Spain. Over dinner, a couple of questions were asked. The first, “What does this beast eat to be so filled with bread?”, and then, “Should you celebrate this holiday even if you don't feel grateful?” The first question is just funny. The second should give us all pause. Being grateful is a state of mind. It's intentional. Too many times, we get caught up in what we don't have, and let's be honest, as Americans, we have a lot. In Psalm 97:12, we read, “Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones, and give thanks to his holy name.” Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California Davis says, “There's a magnetic appeal to gratitude,” and that it speaks to a need that's deeply entrenched. In the Bible, there are powerful examples of people who were grateful for everything God had given them. In First Samuel, we read about Hannah, who was childless until her sustained prayer moved God's heart. When she gave birth to Samuel, she was so grateful that she took him to the temple and dedicated his life to service to the Lord. In the gospels of Matthew and Luke, a Roman centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant who was deathly ill. Though Jesus offered to go to his house, the centurion was so appreciative, his faith compelled him to say that he knew Jesus could heal the servant without traveling to the home, and Jesus rewarded this gratitude by healing the servant in just that way. Gratitude multiplies itself. Once you become intentional about practicing gratitude, you practice it more and more, and in turn, your faith grows so much that others notice, and in becoming this kind of example, you'll never have to ask if you should be grateful, even if you don't feel like it. You'll feel like it all the time. Let's pray. Father, we want to practice daily gratitude for all you've graciously given us. Praising you with our prayers, and being intentional with our gratitude honors you and settles our hearts. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Hi Friends, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! I love the roasted veggies, sweet potatoes and turkey BUT I really love the time spent with family and the built-in time to reflect and talk about your gratitudes. I haven't summarized a book in a bit since we are moving and have been in-between houses for the past couple of months, but I got my hands on Robert Emmon's, Gratitude Works essay thats adapted from his "Gratitude Works" book. I'm going to detail his teachings because I believe they are directly applicable in our current season of parenting a child with eczema, and, in life moving forward because as Emmons says... With Thanksgiving around the corner, I have been thinking about thankfulness and gratitude. On today's podcast episode, we spoke with Dr. Robert Emmons who is the leading researcher on gratitude. His work focuses on the psychology of gratitude and joy as they relate to human flourishing and well-being. It even came up that gratitude (when done properly) can turn the dial down on anxiety. We walked away from our conversation with Dr. Emmons feeling (no surprise here) very grateful. We hope you do too. If you want more help on your path to being grateful, Dr. Emmons has a book, The Little Book Of Gratitude, which I think would be a great stocking stuffer... and Penn thinks would be a very helpful bathroom book. A study by Robert Emmons divided volunteers into three groups that each made weekly entries in journals. One group wrote five things they were grateful for. One described five daily hassles. And a control group listed five events that had impacted them in a small way. The results of the study reveal that those in the gratitude group felt better about their lives overall, were more optimistic about the future, and reported fewer health problems. Giving thanks has a way of changing the way we look at life. Thanks-giving can even make us happier. The Bible has long extolled the benefits of giving thanks to God as doing so reminds us of God’s character. The Psalms repeatedly call God’s people to give God thanks because “the Lord is good and his love endures forever” (Psalm 100:5) and for His unfailing love and wonderful deeds (Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31). As he closes his letter to the Philippians—the letter itself a kind of thank-you note to a church that had supported him—Paul links thankful prayers with the peace of God “which transcends all understanding” (4:7). When we focus on God and His goodness, we find that we can pray without anxiety, in every situation, with thanksgiving. Giving thanks brings us a peace that uniquely guards our hearts and minds and changes the way we look at life. A heart full of gratitude nurtures a spirit of joy.

You're creating this narrative for yourself. It's the perspective/spin you've put on the situation. The power here is that you get to decide. You have the freedom to choose how you think about things. Daily gratitude practice is a very basic easy free practice that can take less than a minute a day that will help you to shift your perspective over time. You can go from a half glass empty to full if you want. I used to be a pessimist in order to be a realist. Today, I have metamorphosed into someone who believes the impossible and stays away from naysaywers. Much of this shift was catalyzed by daily gratitude practice. Now how do we practice? I'm not a big fan of daily journaling It seems to just add to my to do list. So I tend to just recite 5 things I'm grateful for daily. Usually when I'm in the shower. Our brain tends to go to the negative and focus on the bad in order to troubleshoot and survive. But during a time when we are no longer cave people, this survival mechanism actually harms us. Makes us unhappy and pessimistic. By focusing on what is going right, we can redirect the brain to the positive. We can put rose colored glasses on. No I just want to clarify that I am no proponent of toxic positivity; but I also don't support being an Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. There is definitely a balance. In a world where there are a lot of terrible things happening right now it is helpful to focus on what is going right. There is so much that goes right. Often we forget we have a roof over our heads or running water. Or the kids who make a big mess, there was a time we wanted them so badly. Our brain is an expert at taking things for granted. Because it's built to protect us. I challenge you to see your life with a grateful lens everyday. It will change how you see things. The length of time the shift will take really depends on how deeply ingrained pessimism is within us. But I promise you'll see a change. I'll add in a tip for feeling good immediately. Try acknowledging something you wanted for so long and didn't have. Here's one of my examples: I was at H and M in the kids' clothing and I was looking at the girls stuff. It was so cute! I was so happy and grateful to be in that section. I remembered 3 year prior while being in Bloomingdales shopping in the kids section and there being very little stuff for boys Meanwhile, there were a ton of adorable girls clothing and I had a boy. I couldn't buy girl clothes for my daughter bc I didn't have one And for as long as I can remember I wanted a girl. Three years later, here I am with a daughter. Something I wanted and now I have. Also, the career of medicine isn't what I thought it would be, but there was a time when I desperately wanted to get into medical school. It's a real privilege to be a physician and deal with people's health. Can you take a second to think of something you always wanted and now have? And how do you feel when you think about that? Kind of warm and fuzzy inside right? It's so easy for us to want something and then when we have it we take it for granted or forget about how badly we once wanted instead of just being grateful. A huge happiness hack and factor lies in the feeling elicited by gratitude. By shifting our brains into gratitude, we put on rose colored glasses for our lives and boom-we become happier. So When you're feeling like crap Or Having a bad day Or In a rough spot? You can shift yourself to a place of gratitude in an instant. You can name 5 things you're grateful for to yourself and get a quick boost. Let me give you some information about the benefits of gratitude before we delve into how: Gratitude Your hypothalamus activated Floods brain w dopamine Natural high More inclined to give thanks and do good More gratitude healthier and happier It is free! Free Physical health better Sleep better Resilience increase More likely to take care of health Mental health is better Dr. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has found that gratitude increases happiness and reduces depression. Gratitude makes us more resilient to trauma and stressful events. Now how can we get ourselves to a more optimistic place in the long run? Get ourselves into the habit of gratitude practice How do we cultivate this habit? -saying it to yourself daily, pair it with brushing teeth or showering (I like to list 5 things every day that I'm grateful for and why) -write it down daily put a notebook on your nightstand to do before bed or first thing in the morning -create a gratitude jar at the end of each week you could put something that went well or what you're grateful for and read it at the end of each year (Jay Shetty mentioned that in his IG) -practice gratitude with the family/kids at dinner table or bed time We make it a family affair at bedtime. Try any of these tips for a month and see how you shift. I used to consider myself a pessimist and realist and I am far from that today. These happiness hacks can help you. Even if you're in a dysfunctional relationship or dissatisfying career. They will get you in a better direction to a happier.

This is Steve and welcome back to another segment of Press On. This called Attitude of Gratitude.Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.Ever heard the expression have an “attitude of gratitude.” Sounds cute doesn't it? I would wager there's more going on here than cute. Paul introduces a third word in Philippians 4:6...with “thanksgiving.”Why this word? Did you ever consider the psychological ramifications of worry? It's adverse impacts on the body and mind are well documented. Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart and Paul is instructing his readers to re-learn the appropriate way to handle life's troubles. Here's what we know about developing an attitude of thanksgiving.Gratitude/thanksgiving improves psychological health. It reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, from envy, resentment to frustration and regret. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression. Grateful and thankful people are more likely to behave in a prosocial manner, even when others behave less kindly, according to a 2012 study by the University of Kentucky.Ask yourself how do you spend your day and what do you put in front of yourself. Things like cable news, crime shows, negative talk shows things that regularly fill your heart and mind with things that rob you of life.Hear the word from the writers of Proverbs 12:25: Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.There is much more to this story but for today think about this: Start working on a behavior change that has lasting (healthy)physical and emotional benefits.Take a small step by being thankful. Look at the blessings you have received and surround yourself with people and things that are life giving and not taking. This is Steve and I'm thankful for you and until we meet again Press On. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/palabras-esmeraldas/support
