Welcome to Washday Woosah, BA Fam! It's the Sunday slow-down you need, something to listen to while you're doing the laundry, deep conditioning, or simply enjoying a nice quiet moment of relaxation before the Sunday scaries start to hit. If you needed a sign to play matchmaker for your friends, this episode is it! Gabrielle and I were "set up" by a mutual friend during the pandemic when he realized we were two media mavens juggling our careers and motherhood in New York and somehow had never crossed paths. Gabrielle is a multi-hyphenate who's lead communications at technology giants like Disney ABC, Comcast NBCUniversal, CBS Corporation and Amazon. She's a college professor at NYU and Columbia and a proud wife and mother of two. Today, I got to dive deep with Gabrielle who shares her inspiring journey from humble beginnings in Los Angeles to becoming the Chief Communications Officer at Hachette Book Group. She discusses the importance of mentorship, the impact of her upbringing on her career, and the significance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Gabrielle also emphasizes the need for work-life balance, her financial strategies, and her commitment to teaching and empowering the next generation. The discussion highlights the challenges and triumphs of navigating a successful career while being a dedicated mother and partner. I hope you're loving these Washday Woosah episodes as much as I am! For our finale, we are doing something different. In this episode, Asha, Carrie, Deondre and Theo have a book group-style discussion of Ruth Wilson Gilmore's Abolition Geography: Essays Towards Liberation. It contextualizes our season and this sensitive and fought moment in organizing and in history. Gilmore's activist scholarship over three decades has been deeply influential for abolitionist organizing in the United States and Canada, where we live, and across the world. Over the course of this conversation, we explore the lessons that this body of work has to offer for our current conjuncture. Not least of all, the messy and unending work of building shared questions and narratives across perceived boundaries.

(BARD annotation below). We hope that you can join us to discuss this compelling story. Here is the NLS annotation: Help wanted: a novel DB 121085 Waldman, Adelle. Reading time 9 hours, 27 minutes. Read by Katie Boothe. A production of National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, Library of Congress. Subjects: Humor; Human Relations; General Description: “Every day at 3:55 a.m., members of Team Movement clock in for their shift at big-box store Town Square in a small upstate New York town. Under the eyes of a self-absorbed and barely competent boss, they empty the day’s truck of merchandise, stock the shelves, and scatter before the store opens and customers arrive. Their lives follow a familiar if grueling routine, but their real problem is that Town Square doesn’t schedule them for enough hours–most of them are barely getting by, even while working second or third jobs. When store manager Big Will announces he is leaving, the members of Movement spot an opportunity. If they play their cards right, one of them just might land a management job, with all the stability and possibility of advancement. The members of Team Movement–including a comedy-obsessed oddball who acts half his age, a young woman clinging on to her “cool kid” status from high school, and a college football hopeful trying to find a new path–band together to set a just-so-crazy-it-might-work plot in motion.” — Provided by publisher Strong language. Ariel Lawhon joined us for a “Bookaccino Live” Book Group discussion of THE FROZEN RIVER, which was a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and an NPR Book of the Year when it was published in hardcover last December. It is now available in paperback and is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. Our reviewer Pamela Kramer has this to say about the book, and it is so dead-on: "A book club would have myriad topics to discuss after reading this thoughtful novel about a time when the health care of women was often better left entirely to women themselves." Ariel talks about Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife, and the diary that Martha kept for almost 30 years that informed so much of Ariel's writing. She points out that the voice of the book was not always first person, but the title never changed, and it took time to figure out exactly what would find its way into the story. While not biographical, the details are period correct. Some of the storytelling had to be compressed into the timeline of a single year, 1789, which is why THE FROZEN RIVER is fiction. And yes, Ariel reveals what she is writing now, and when we can hope to see it. Here is the NLS annotation I have some questions for you DB 112960 Makkai, Rebecca. Reading time 14 hours, 8 minutes. Read by Julia Whelan. A production of National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, Library of Congress. Subjects: Suspense Fiction; Mystery and Detective Stories; Bestsellers; Psychological Fiction Description: “A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the 1995 murder of a classmate, Thalia Keith. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia's death and the conviction of the school's athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are the subject of intense fascination online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie. But when The Granby School invites her back to teach a two-week course, Bodie finds herself inexorably drawn to the case and its increasingly apparent flaws. In their rush to convict Omar, did the school and the police overlook other suspects? Is the real killer still out there? As she falls down the very rabbit hole she was so determined to avoid, Bodie begins to wonder if she wasn't as much of an outsider at Granby as she'd thought—if, perhaps, back in 1995, she knew something that might have held the key to solving the case.” — Provided by publisher. Kate Morton joined us for April's “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event to talk about her latest novel, HOMECOMING, a Bookreporter Bets On pick and one of Carol Fitzgerald's top three books of 2023. At the start of the pandemic, Kate was working on another book in London. When she and her family went to Australia for what was planned as a spring break trip, COVID restrictions led to their living on a small farm south of Melbourne. She set aside that book as she began to be inspired by her surroundings and thus conceived a new plot and story. Kate discussed her writing process with us, as well as how she balanced multiple points of view, timeframes and the writing of a true-crime book as part of the arc for HOMECOMING. Our attendees asked Kate a number of questions, and one reader shared a very special story about how he came to her work. The conversation was brisk and enlightening. As for the abandoned book, Kate has picked that up again. For our first “Bookaccino Live” Book Group of 2024, Lisa See talks about her most recent book, LADY TAN'S CIRCLE OF WOMEN, with Carol Fitzgerald. She explains how she came to discover Tan Yunxian, a female physician from 15th-century China, and why she decided to write a novel based on her extraordinary life. Two readers, Debbie and Michelle, appeared on camera to ask Lisa about her interest in ancient Chinese medicine and the role of women in it, as well as how a new book idea comes to her. Michelle learned that Lisa's mother, Carolyn See, wrote a book called MAKING A LITERARY LIFE and was curious to know if Lisa followed her mother's writing advice. We also fielded some fabulous questions from the audience that touched on a number of additional topics, including the book's gorgeous cover and Lisa's lovely necklaces, which an eagle-eyed reader noticed she wears to all of her events. Our attendees hailed from 37 states and Canada, which we were thrilled to see! Download your FREE copy of How to Level up Your Studio Policy in 3 Ways” here: 3 Ways to Level Up Your Studio PolicyJoin the FREE Facebook community for piano teachers:https://www.facebook.com/groups/theprosperouspianoteacherIn the ever-evolving world of music education, passionate educators are continually exploring innovative approaches to inspire and engage their students. One such educator, Tim Topham, has not only been on a six-year journey of blogging and podcasting but has also recently authored a groundbreaking book, "No Book Beginners." In this podcast, we dive into Tim's creative process, the inspiration behind his book, and the valuable lessons he's learned along the way.The Genesis of "No Book Beginners":Tim Topham's journey began with a commitment to push the boundaries of traditional piano teaching methods. Drawing inspiration from various pedagogical approaches such as Music Learning Theory, Kada, and Suzuki, he embarked on a mission to create something unique. His experiment began with a seven-year-old student named Josh, marking the genesis of "No Book Beginners."Tim decided to challenge the norm by refraining from using a method book for the first 10 weeks of lessons, effectively turning Josh into a guinea pig for an innovative teaching program. Despite initial doubts, Tim's approach resulted in significant musical growth and increased musicality in Josh compared to students who followed a more conventional reading-first approach. From Experiment to BookEncouraged by Josh's success, Tim went on to develop a comprehensive program titled "No Book Beginners." Recognizing the potential impact on piano education, he recorded a course to share this approach with fellow educators. This eventually led to the creation of his book.Earlier this year, after years of contemplating a book, Tim finally found the focus – "No Book Beginners." He aimed to distill his extensive knowledge of music education into a practical guide for teachers seeking a fresh perspective. Starting with a larger concept, he decided to narrow down the book's focus to make it more accessible and impactful. The Writing ProcessWriting a book can be a daunting task, especially for those new to the process. Tim shared insights into his writing journey, emphasizing key aspects that helped him overcome hurdles. One crucial recommendation is to set aside dedicated time each day, creating a structured routine for writing. Additionally, using tools like Scrivener for outlining and breaking down the writing process into manageable goals can make the endeavor more achievable.Tim highlighted the importance of not being overly critical during the initial writing phase. Instead, the focus should be on getting ideas down on paper, with the understanding that refinement and editing will come later. The power of outlining, specifically spending six hours brainstorming and organizing ideas, played a pivotal role in shaping the book's structure.Navigating the Editing ProcessAfter completing the initial writing phase, Tim engaged in a rigorous editing process. Working with structural and copy editors, he ensured the book's coherence, clarity, and adherence to a style guide. The editing journey involved several rounds, from structural adjustments to meticulous line editing and proofreading.Tim stressed the significance of investing time and resources in thorough editing to produce a professional and error-free final product. He acknowledged the investment required but emphasized the satisfaction of holding a polished book that aligns with his professional...

With Cathy Russ, Director of The West Bloomfield Michigan Public Library As the snow and cold weather arrive, there's no better time to hunker down and catch up on our reading. But with so many newly released books, it's hard even to know where to begin. Thankfully, your local librarian can offer some great recommendations. According to Cathy Russ, the Director of The West Bloomfield Michigan Public Library, celebrity autobiographies are extremely popular right now. In addition to number-one bestsellers by Matthew Perry and Britney Spears, recently published memoirs by Henry Winkler, Barbara Streisand, and Dolly Parton make great holiday gifts. Or, if you prefer best-selling fiction novels, Cathy suggests, The Exchange, the sequel to John Grisham's blockbuster novel, The Firm. If you're looking for your next book club, check out Tom Lake, by Ann Patchett, an emotionally gripping family saga that takes place during the pandemic in Northern Michigan. According to Cathy, the availability of digital streaming Apps like Hoopla and Kanopy makes lending libraries more accessible than ever before. In addition to eBooks and movies, you can borrow your favorite audiobook or download music to your phone. You can even take advantage of the library waiting list through the App and place a hold on a particular item. Best of all, instead of paying a monthly surcharge to your favorite music streaming service, the cost is free. Just think of the money you'll save! But did you know that many public libraries also offer a full range of business services? When was the last time you visited your local library? If it's been a while, you might be surprised to learn all the amazing things the library provides these days. In addition to internet access, printing, scanning, and faxing, many libraries also have private meeting rooms available. One of the advantages of “working” from a library is the convenient hours of operation. The majority of public libraries offer evening hours and are open seven days a week. If you need help researching a particular topic or perhaps studying industry trends for a new business venture, why not ask the librarian for help? You could even access the library database from the comfort of your own home. Finally, to keep up with all the latest offerings, you can follow your Library on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to learn about upcoming events. Please listen to Florine's 2021 interview with Cathy Russ. What You'll Hear on This Episode: What happens at a book club? How are book clubs organized, and who usually picks the book? What happens if you don't like the book you're assigned to read? Do themed book clubs exist? How book clubs can help you expand your knowledge and even what you are interested in reading. What are some of the most popular authors and books right now? What are Book Group kits? Cathy talks about a few of her favorite books that she's read this year, including Firekeeper's Daughter and The Thursday Murder Club. What is the Best Seller's Club and the Reader's Advisory? Some of the fun and fabulous events and programming at the West Bloomfield Public Library. Cathy explains the benefits of two apps: Hoopla and Kanopy. Today's Takeaway: Talking about a well-loved book is not only fun, but it can also enhance our understanding of others who have differing perspectives. By reading and learning about other races, cultures, or philosophies, we put ourselves into the mindset and emotions of others who think and live differently than we do. Discussing a particularly thought-provoking book with others can introduce unfamiliar concepts that may be foreign to our experience but might ultimately foster a greater sense of unity and actually bring people together or inspire compromise. Instead of observing from a distance, perhaps we may learn the reasons behind their beliefs or actions. And at a time when we are so divided as a nation and as a society, that can only be a good thing! In addition, public libraries offer many free resources and the opportunity to participate in fun community events. If you haven't visited your public library in a while, what are you waiting for? There's no better gift right now than treating yourself to your new favorite book and taking some much-needed “me time” to pause, read and reflect! I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.” Quotes: “Book clubs can be organized in whatever way suits the book club. Some people have a book club, but it's really a wine club where they occasionally talk about books. Some people really want to get right into the book and only talk about the book. So I think the important thing is however the club is organized is that it meets the needs of its members.” — Cathy [5:16] “The key to the organization of book clubs is just to make sure everybody's on the same page, if you will, and that everybody understands what the purpose is.” — Cathy [5:55] “That's the beauty of book clubs because it's not one size fits all. And it really can be tailored to what you want it to be.” — Cathy [8:11] “Some of the best book discussions come from when people don't like the book.” — Cathy [8:40] “You have a different take on it than I do, and we can have a cool discussion just about that.” — Cathy [12:19] “Virtual book clubs grew in popularity, because it was a way for people to connect, and it was a way for people to talk about something other than the pandemic, and talk about stories and stay in touch and have discussions that weren't about politics necessarily, or about things that were dividing us, but things that were bringing us together.” — Cathy [13:04] Brought to You By: Florine Mark Mentioned in This Episode: West Bloomfield Public Library West Bloomfield Public Library Facebook West Bloomfield Public Library Instagram Cathy Russ on LinkedIn
Dani Shapiro discusses SIGNAL FIRES for “Bookaccino Live” Book Group moderated by Carol Fitzgerald. Bookreporter readers loved this book and were quick to ask questions about the characters, who drive this story. Dani had put this book away a while ago, and when she came back to it, it was with fresh eyes and a new perspective. She shares why she pivoted in time to tell the story and how the accident that opens the book radiated through the lives of the Wilf family in very different ways. She also explains why Waldo stole a piece of her heart, as well as that of readers. People from 22 states, along with DC and Canada, were part of the audience. As a result, there was a question about the city of Roseville, Michigan, being mentioned in the book as a reader lived close to there. Jodi is a complete outliner, and they discuss how having this structure allowed them to develop the story with each of them writing on their own. This truly was a partnership throughout the entire process of writing, editing and promoting the book. Jodi and Jennifer also point out that they wanted to tell a story about a person who was transgender but frame it against a much bigger narrative and a mystery. Alice Elliott Dark discussed her novel, FELLOWSHIP POINT, with Carol Fitzgerald and readers at the September “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event. Members of the audience asked questions both on and off camera about her character development, including Maine as a character. Alice talked about her writing routine and shared insight into the editing process, where 200 pages of the book were winnowed down --- and her focus on Agnes and Polly. The ending of the book came to her quite late; she did not write towards it, and readers felt it was very satisfying. There was continuous talk about the beauty of Alice's writing, and how that made a long book feel just right as our attendees mentioned they were so vested in the story and how it was told. I'm changing up the book review channel and starting a book club.In September 2023 we reviewed 4 books on the channel. No real standouts to be honest so instead I'll mention why and how I'm going to do things differently. Basically I'm putting in a lot of effort but don't feel like I'm getting much value in return. So I'm going to streamline the process by doing them live, focusing less on creating highly detailed notes/images and by trying to engage more with you, the readers at home. Big thanks to Cole McCormick (from the America+ podcast) and Ashley Glenday for supporting the show. Very much appreciated!I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Laura Dave joined us for a "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event to discuss her New York Times bestselling novel, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME. Laura had the idea for this book for a while, and she wrote it from different perspectives before finding the first-person story told by Hannah that we read. She talks about how she needs time to settle in with her characters and her plot, and then turns to what serves the book most. She also shares some of the research that she did about houseboat life, as well as the scenes set in Texas. And, to the delight of our readers, she previews what's next.
