Welcome to 115 miles. With Josh Connolly and Has Khair. Although great friends today, Josh and Has were born into two extremely different worlds. Both had hardships, struggles & challenges, but they manifested in very different ways. Has grew up in a rough part of North London in a single parent family, having lost his dad at 10 months old. Josh grew up in a chaotic home where life was fuelled by drink, drugs, anger and trauma. They share many similar outlooks on life now, but growing up, they would have likely hated each other for the wrong reasons. 115 miles is the distance between John and Has when they were growing up. Worlds apart, but deep down wanting the same things. In this podcast, they examine life, work, culture and the reality of living in today’s complex world. 115 miles is designed to give hope to all those people who believe that no matter where you come from, you can always get to where want to go.
BIG NEWS!After four and a half brilliant years of recording this show together, we have decided to hit pause on 115 Miles. It's been the most incredible journey for us - we've learnt, grown, argued, but most of all, had so many laughs together.Along the way, we found some of you to join us - dedicated listeners & members of our 115 miles community. We know that some of you have truly appreciated the openness, curiosity and vulnerability that we'd often bring to difficult subjects. We're grateful to our friends who have joined us on the show, helping to elevate our conversations with new perspectives. This is definitely not the end of Josh & Has - it's just a pause whilst we focus on some big things in our lives respectively. Watch this space! For now, a deep and heartfelt thanks to everyone for listening...it's been a heck of a ride. And for the last time in a while....we hope you're sitting comfortably because it's about to get uncomfortable. We're pulling one of our most popular ones from the archive this week. We recorded it way back in March last year. It's about being mates. And it's poignant because we need our mates more than ever these days.Apparently, the average friendship lasts 17 years. We dig into:Are you still friends with people from school?Who is in your closest circle? What makes a good friend? We go deep on friendship. We explore what the difference is between being mates and being great friends. We also explore judging people on the tube, how we're misunderstood and how were doing on our words of the year last year. One of the realest, most raw conversations that we have ever had about our friendship. With the recent race riots occurring in the UK, we track back a little further to what began with an innocuous Whatsapp message from Josh to Has that led to an heated conversation about race between us. Within that, as ever between us, the conversation led to insight and better understanding of each other. And this has led Josh to some heartfelt commitments around his privilege, community and role he wants to play in being an ally. It has also led to insights for Has about what he wants to do also.We dig into all of this and the wider reflections on what's been happening in the UK around the race riots. If you have ever wondered how to support your friends who are people of colour, or want to learn the perspective of what it's like to live through the lens of someone who is not white in this country, then you must dig in.We hope you're sitting comfortably...this is definitely going to get uncomfortable. In this episode, we did deep into meditation, stretching & listening to yourself. We explore why it's hard to take wisdom and advice from friends and why sometimes, you just need to find your own path on things. The show was not the planned one - we just organically found ourselves flowing into a really intuitive conversation that had us surface some powerful insights.Unfortunately we had some technical issues on recording, so the sound quality is slightly impaired on this episode. We hope it doesn't get in the way of your enjoyment of the conversation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, we explore emotional comedowns after big events and are asking where are all the normal, smart people? After Josh's mammoth 2 week book tour, we dive into what life feels like after this as normalcy sets in. We dig into why people often crash after big events and how to navigate that period. From there, we move into a conversation about our society. It seems to hard right are winning. Despite Labour winning a huge majority in the UK election, the popular vote tells another story. If Proportional Representation existed, they would have 236 vs 411 seats, and Reform would have 94 vs 5 seats. It's not quite the left victory when you look at this way.Similar (and potentially more worrying) things happening in the US and across Europe. The hard left is equally divisive and isolating. You're either in it, or you're the other side.Fringes seem to be getting bigger and louder. The majority middle seems quiet and inert. The people who can stop the nutters seem to be underground or sleeping. So, we're asking where are all the normal people hiding? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Two perfect moments come together in this latest episode of 115 miles. Not only does it mark our 100th episode (which I think we actually forgot to mention), but also it is the launch week for Josh's book, It's Them, Not You. For anyone that has followed us since the early days of this podcast, you'll know how momentous this week is and we're delighted to have explored on this this special episode. We hope you enjoy the listen! If you haven't got your copy of the book yet, grab it here: https://www.joshconnolly.co.uk/its-them-not-you Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we (Josh & Has) first go deep on the check-in, exploring the things we think about and don't often say. We then dive into the topic of therapy vs coaching, which stemmed from an online conversation that began the previous week. A well known and pretty active on social media founder in the therapeutic space made a claim about coaching not being able to support people to make long term changes in their mental health needs. We dive into the situation a bit, but also around the topic of therapy and coaching in more detail. Not one to miss! It's Men's Health Week, and we go deep into it this week. We bust some fallacies that men don't do emotions (just look at football fans if you don't believe us), and we explore why it is so much harder for some to do it in normal life.Has talks about his journey with his family, and also his struggle to let go and cry via a discussion around visualisations. The recent societal narrative has veered us towards zoning in on mental health when we talk about men's health, but we actually dig into the physical side of it - how often do we think about it, does health play on our minds and do we go to the doctors?A great conversation, even if we do say so ourselves! With the recent launch of tyllr for Has and Josh being off grid this week, we have a special re-issue of one of our most popular episodes ever.Do you have persistent feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt and fears of being exposed as a fraud? If the answer is yes, then you could one of the many millions of us that suffer with Imposter Syndrome.According to YOUGOV, 66% of Britons find it difficult to receive praise or compliments from others. Around 57% downplay their achievements and criticise themselves more than others criticise them.Imposter Syndrome is real and for many people, it prevents them from moving forward in their lives. In this episode of 115 miles, we go deep on this topic, both from a personal exploration and also how it might show up for others. Josh shares his framework for acknowledging and addressing feeling like an imposter and how to move through it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We recorded this special episode on a very special day - May 14th, which is also Josh's 12 year sobriety anniversary. As you might imagine, we dedicated our conversation to exploring Josh's journey, but also in doing so, we go deeper into society's relationship with addiction, our own less obvious addictions and the importance of active listening vs advice giving. We end with some powerful reflections - an exercise we think we'd all benefit from doing regularly.A big conversation on a big day. We hope you enjoy it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There's no sugarcoating this one...in today's episode, we're talking about 'death'.Before you switch off your sets, let us (Josh & Has) explain...it's a taboo subject that people are afraid to talk about. We dig into why that is, as well as our personal views on life, mortality and death. We discuss regrets, how the best time is now and how to tell important people that we love them.We might say this often, but we think this could be one of our best discussions yet!Death ain't an easy topic to discuss or think about...it's about to get uncomfortable. On this episode, we dive into superhuman feats and whether we can all do them, or the exceptional few that are born with special powers. We discussed, Russ Cook, who recently ran the length of Africa in 352 days. Nicknamed 'Hardest geezer', he had several moments during the journey where mere mortals would have turned around and gone home, but he pushed through and 'ground' it out.In our conversation, we ask if society no longer favours discomfort, hard work or the 'hustle'. It's a tricky, nuanced discussion that sees us get tangled up with each other a few times. We hope you're sitting comfortably...this one is about to get about to get uncomfortable! Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we (Has &Josh) dive into a recent published study that suggested that playground bullies are more likely to be successful in later life. The study, which began from 1970 through to 2016, tracked 7000 individuals and points to some interesting findings about aggression in younger years positively impacting opportunities and success in later years. As usual, we dissect the study and put our own take on it.We then explored the recent furore over the Nike design on the England Men's football shirt - a healthy debate where we ended up quite surprised by our point of view by the end of the discussion. Some meaty topics that will make you explore deeply within yourself ...we hope you're sitting comfortably.... Ok...this is a special one for us. In this episode, we (Josh & Has) dig into our secret projects that we've been alluding to on the podcast for the last year. Has talks about his new manager platform that he's launching today, tyllr, and what makes it so different from everything else out there. And although Josh's book, "It's Them, Not You", isn't quite a secret anymore, we talk about why it's so important and the impact we believe it will have in the world. We think of our listeners as friends, so we hope you'll enjoy hearing about our missions outside of 115 miles. Find out more: https://tyllr.co/ https://www.joshconnolly.co.uk/its-them-not-you
In today's episode, we (Has & Josh) talk all about ethics and moral dilemmas. We're at a foul point in our global history - there is an incredible amount of division, war, genocide, poverty, individualism and state oppression in the world. As humans/citizens, we are being forced into choices and dilemmas in a way unlike in our living memory - so we're asking some big questions in today's episode. We dive into the upcoming general election and our beloved NHS in the UK...it get's pretty punchy at one point! We hope you're sitting comfortably...
Welcome to the second part of our conversation on shadows. We start by digging into our emotions using the 'emotions wheel' before doing our usual lighthearted trip into our unique and often polarised views on life. We (Josh & Has) then go deeper into exploring our shadow sides, diving into the what they are and some of the work that is needed to begin to tackle them. This leads us into the topic of the Collective Shadow - the notion of our societal dark sides. Such a big topic that we almost ran out of time on again...it's definitely one we'll revisit. Hope you're sitting comfortably...
We all have parts of ourselves that we don't like and try to keep hidden - these are called our 'shadow sides' and in today's episode, we (Has & Josh) dig into it. In the conversation, we uncover what the term shadow side means and we explore where it might begin in our lives. We talk about our own shadow sides and give a perspective on what we think each other's shadows (blind spots) are. This is Part 1 of a 2 part conversation, where next time we'll dig further into it and explore the concept of Collective Shadow - the effect of people's shadows combining. We hope you're sitting comfortably...it's about to get uncomfortable.
In this episode we (Josh Connolly & Hasan Khair) get into body image. Research suggests that girls are more likely to be dissatisfied with their appearance and their weight than boys. In a recent survey, 46% of girls reported that their body image causes them to worry 'often' or 'always', compared to 25% of boys. We discuss the increasing pressures on boys and girls both, but particularly around whether we believe the stat around boys is entirely accurate. We explore our own journeys around body image and whether we would go under the knife to preserve our youth! As always, a bit of fun around the big topics, but as we hope you now come to expect from us, lots of vulnerability and candour in this one too.
Welcome back to our first episode of 2024! In this episode, we (Hasan Khair & Josh Connolly) reflect on our big years ahead before diving into the controversy that engulfed our content from the last episode around Joey Barton. We explore what happens when you unwittingly get pulled outside of your echo chamber and get exposed to the darker side of internet communities. From there, we move into Dry January and delve into the practice of abstinence from alchohol. We discuss its value and the inevitable correlation to the wider conversations around addiction and overconsumption. It's good to be back in the studio!
Welcome to our Christmas 2023 special! It's been a big year and we reflect on the biggest things for us - both positive and negative. Then we move full force into Xmas cheer - dad jokes for the cracker, and the most important discussion of all time, who are top 5 greatest bands of all time are. Expect sparks to fly on this one!
In this episode, we're talking about the fears we carry. We first lightheartedly explore the UK's top 10 most feared things and some very weird ones (clusters of holes, anyone?) before diving into our own personal fears and why they show up. We discuss ways we can begin to overcome our fears too. It's scary stuff - we hope you're sitting comfortably!
With International Men's Day 2023 approaching, we go deep on the topic of men, feelings, talking and support. The theme for this year is Zero Male Suicide. We discuss what leads to 1 in 4 men taking their own lives in the UK and explore some of the complexities of talking about male issues in the context of their privilege in the world as it relates to women. It's a raw conversation and one we expect might garner different opinions from our listeners. We hope you're sitting comfortably...because it's about to get uncomfortable.
Today, we talk about deep friendships and loneliness. We are in an epidemic. 1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by loneliness. According to some reports, the impact on loneliness on people is like smoking 15 cigarettes a day and increases overall risk of death by 26%. The total number of people in the UK who say they “often” or “always” feel lonely increased from 2.6 million people in 2020 to 3.3 million people in 2022. In the conversation, we explore our own friendship origins and how we have come to support each other. And then we go deep on the loneliness topic. Today is raw, vulnerable and challenging...hope you're sitting comfortably. And as promised, here's the link to that
We've put together a special episode of 115miles where we let our followers ask the questions. No limits, nothing off the table. We had some deep and meaningful ones And some straight up weird ones. You might learn more about us than we were ready to share...like what Josh does in the shower that Has doesn't...
With the Tory party seemingly on the brink of a calamitous election defeat, Has began by saying how much joy and glee he was taking from the situation and the potential demise of some of he sinister players in the party. This led us to the topic of 'schadenfreude', which is the pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune. We explore josh's views on who he likes to see fail and more widely, what it says about us as a society to want to see 'certain' people fail. Lots of humour and lightness around in today's episode, including the some awkward questions like "what do you do when it's only you at home alone"? As usual, we hope you're sitting comfortably because...it's about to get uncomfortable. If you're interested, here are some interesting articles on the topic: The secret joys of schadenfreude | Life and style https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/why-does-schadenfreude-exist
And we're back with a bang! After a little summer break, we're diving in where we left off - tackling the hard questions that people often find difficult to answer. In this episode, we discuss 'Allyship' through exploring Jordan Henderson's move to Saudi Arabia. Henderson's move is particularly contentious because he has been a vocal ally of the LGBTQA+ community and this was seen as a moment of allyship trumped by personal interests. We explore the conversation, allyship in general and put ourselves in the hot seat of what we'd do in a similar situation - let's just say, it's not easy! We hope you're sitting comfortably because it's about to get uncomfortable....
We're super excited for you to hear this one as we're joined for our Co-Host session by Jess Frost and Nick Edgar of 3E Space. In this episode, we talk about Healing. 'Healing work' often is associated with woo-woo people or spiritually inclined folks, and is therefore probably misunderstood. We wanted to lift the 'hood' on it today by exploring some things together. Why do people even need to be healed? What if someone doesn't feel there's anything wrong with them, or that they're broken? We also cover why Josh first started Inner You, and the power of community in healing. Jess & NIck are deeply experienced in providing transformational coaching and holistic wellbeing, helping their clients navigate some incredible challenges and life opportunities. Please look them up at https://www.the3espace.com/ We loved having this conversation and hope you enjoy the listen!
Not gonna lie, but this episode is a banger! In the emotional check in - we dive into personal growth and the importance of having a safe and trustworthy community around you. We explore regrets - should we have them and is there any value that comes from exploring our past journeys or mistakes? Life throws us all many big questions daily and we took time to dig into some of them - exposing the uncomfortable truths and misconceptions along the way. Hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we did recording it...
This is undoubtedly one of our most powerful conversations on 115 Miles. We hope you're sitting comfortably...and we know we always say this, but...it's about to get uncomfortable. We are joined by our good friend and CEO of Power The Fight, Ben Lindsay, to have a deep discussion about race, racism and our relationship with it in the UK. Our conversation responded to the news in the last few days about the naming of another suspect in the murder of Stephen Lawrence and of yet another tragic death of a child yards away from the charity's office. We explore the heaviness and trauma that communities feel in these moments, why the media paints it as a black people only problem (and why it's definitely not) and we confront our own conscious and unconscious prejudices as a white majority society. Ben brings knowledge, wisdom and grace having been doing this work for over two decades and we were privileged and honoured to have him join us as our co-host. Ben is CEO of Power The Fight, a charity dedicated to empowering communities to end youth violence. He is also a keynote speaker, published author of a best selling book, as well as currently doing his PHD at Durham University. Find out more about Ben and the team's incredible work at www.powerthefight.org.uk.
We explore why we often find it difficult to hear people when they offer advice or opinions in our best interests. We dive into what gets triggered within us and how to receive it in the way it is intended. In this episode, we also explore what it takes to be a peak performing team and ask whether there are any costs to pursuing greatness? We hope hope you're sitting comfortably because it's about to get uncomfortable...
In this episode, we discuss the all too familiar story of a black footballer, Vinicius Jr, being racially abused by an opposition team's fans in Spain. We dive into what sanctions should exist to drive this out of the stadiums and in doing so, we explore whether it's a wider societal problem in both Spain and other European countries. Although the incident happened a few weeks back, the issue is sadly not going away anytime soon. It's so appalling that we still need to be having these conversations in 2023, but overt racism still exists in plain light and there is so much work is still to do. And if you think it's just isolated to football, think again. It's just that 'the beautiful game' is under the spotlights of TV. We hope you're sitting comfortably because it's about to get uncomfortable...
As a special episode for Mental Health Awareness Week, we're delighted to bring another Co-Host session to you! Joining us in the the studio is Ed Jenneson. A renowned employment lawyer and a specialist in neurodiversity, Ed shares his own journey around his own diagnosis, his relationship with anxiety and his sobriety. Together we explore this year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme, Anxiety, where we dive in from a very personal perspective into a wider viewpoint around the workplace and society. It's a special episode - we're grateful to have Ed's wisdom and experience, and if you listen closely enough, you might even hear his Robbie Williams impression!
This is a really special episode for us! For the first time ever, we have invited our friends to join our conversation as co-hosts. Eugene, Fran and Nadia are the wonderful hosts of the Social Matters podcast, as well as being social workers and Inclusion consultants. Amongst the many(many) laughs, we have some serious conversations about workplace culture, society, the Tories (surprise!) and the impact of over a decade's worth of cuts to children's support services. We're going to give you fair warning - the Social Matters crew bring the same high level of madness and energy as us, so it's going to be a raucous listen! We'll be doing more Co-Host Sessions - watch this space
In this episode, we reflect on the Labour Party's recent 'attack' ads on the Tory party, which feels like a departure from their approach over the last few years. This led us to exploring whether being nice ever wins the day against those who bring a more hard edged approach. As ever, we dive into tough stuff that we know people think about, but don't always feel comfortable to talk about. We hope you enjoy the listen!
Do you have persistent feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt and fears of being exposed as a fraud? If the answer is yes, then you could one of the many millions of us that suffer with Imposter Syndrome. According to YOUGOV, 66% of Britons find it difficult to receive praise or compliments from others. Around 57% downplay their achievements and criticise themselves more than others criticise them. Imposter Syndrome is real and for many people, it prevents them from moving forward in their lives. In this episode of 115 miles, we go deep on this topic, both from a personal exploration and also how it might show up for others. Josh shares his framework for acknowledging and addressing feeling like an imposter and how to move through it. We really hope it might help those people who suffer from it in a debilitating way and give them some perspectives on how to move forward. As always - we are super grateful to all our listeners for showing up. Please do follow, like or comment as it genuinely makes a difference to our reach and will help us to continue to push the boundaries of our conversations.
Apparently, the average friendship lasts 17 years. Are you still friends with people from school? Who is in your closest circle? What makes a good friend? In this episode, we (Josh and Has) go deep on friendship. We explore what the difference is between being mates and being great friends. We also explore judging people on the tube, how we're misunderstood and how we're doing on our words of the year. Hope you enjoy!
At the time of publishing this episode, we are three centuries away from Gender Parity according to the UN Secretary General. We live in a world, where less than 1% of venture capital money in the UK is invested in all female founder teams, compared to 89% in all male teams. A world where 1 in every 10 women globally between the ages of 15-49 was subjected to subjected to sexual and/or physical violence by an intimate partner. On Wednesday 8th March 2023, International Women's Day, we, Josh and Has, ask what's the point of it? We explore topics like oppressive structures, male fragility and inter-sectionalism. We ask what can we do as men to accelerate the change? Spoken and seen through our lens as partners, fathers, colleagues, friends and allys, we try to bring both empathy and compassion to the conversation. We're proud to have these conversations on 115miles and push beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones. As always, please come and find us @115milespod on Insta and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. You might not think it, but it really makes a difference. Ok…let's head into the episode.
We (Josh & Has) start the show looking at tearing down some opinions - either popular ones we disagree with or ones of ours we know will be unpopular. This conversation definitely takes us down a few rabbit holes... We then go into the topic of whether texts written in the past should be re-written for the modern age - specifically we discussed Roald Dahl's works being re-edited and published. This was a deep conversation - with introspection, contradictions and pause for thought - are we simply not understanding the needs of this next generation? We hope you're sitting comfortably because it's about to get uncomfortable...
If you've ever worried about a friend, loved one, family member, partner who you think is on the edge of addiction, this episode is for you. In this latest 115 miles, we (Josh and Has) discuss how a light-hearted bit of banter led us both to a bit of soul searching and then ultimately some positive action for Josh. We talk about how we're all faced at some time or another with feeling helpless around how to tackle a difficult conversation with someone that might be triggering or met with confrontation. We dive into some ways to explore it sensitively and compassionately – whilst acknowledging things like projection and judgement may be present. In a more lighthearted bit, we also discuss who we'd have at our dream dinner party. Living or Dead, famous or not – the big question for all our 115miles community though - whose party would you rather be at mine or Josh's?
If you've ever watched Room 101, you'll love the start of this episode. You'll get an insight into our (Josh & Has) pet peeves and what triggers our crankiness. You may or may not agree with the choices though! The big topic this episode is understanding how trauma or traumatic moments feed our adult lives, using Has' recent exploration into his own childhood as a basis for this important conversation. Vulnerable, open and emotional - we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording this episode.
A big start to 2023! We (Josh & Has) begin by talk ing about our personal intentions for the year and our hopes for wider society in 2023. Our main discussion centres around the sweeping legislation coming into effect in the UK around 'anti-striking' and who it will ultimately affect. We also discuss the mandatory mathematics to 18yrs and our views around why these plans are being introduced. A flying start to our podcast for the new year!
This is our (Josh & Has) final episode of 2022 and to keep with tradition, it's a festive reflective one. We begin by discussing whether Raheem Stirling should have gone home when he was burgled during the World Cup, before accidentally tripping into the topic of Josh's sock drawer and cupboard. We discuss the upcoming strikes and our current points of view before moving into some reflections of 2022. No spoilers, but Josh has the worst name for the book that sums up his year. No kidding, it's really bad. Enjoy and see you in January 2023! 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly & Hasan Khair
In the penultimate episode of 2022, we (Josh & Has) actually start with a serious chat around whether we are currently in one of the worst times of society...but fear not, we pick things up and explore our cringiest memories, what we'd do with a time machine and a challenge exclusively for Josh to consider. The now infamous 'emotional check in' takes a different spin - looking at the yin/yang of feelings we might be having - showing that we can hold many things at once. We then wade into Matt Hancock on Celebrity Jungle - and explore whether the nation has forgiven him (and we bring up a previous episode around Joe Rogan too). Our next conversation takes us into people power - and whether under the most extreme pressure-even very obedient societies - all crack. This is a great conversation - exploring tough topics with strong opinions - we hope you enjoy it. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly and Hasan Khair.
Another very early start in the studio for us - we kick off in our usual high pace style that sees us go from breakfasts, packed lunches, posters on 15yr olds walls, flatpack furniture and then some very interesting facts! This was all in the first 6 minutes! From there, we had a deeper personal check in around health, systems, ripple effects and the power of our minds in forming good & bad habits. We then wade deep into the controversy of the World Cup - exploring the strong feelings about this particular event, human rights and the hypocrisy of many people around it. This was an important conversation - one that we hope will get others to have a think about their views on it. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly and Hasan Khair
We (Josh & Has) always begin with the hardest questions of society - ie...how do you eat your Weetabix? Once we established that it has to be warm milk, we moved onto a subject close to us - food addiction and talked about how difficult it is to declare, diagnose and manage, given it is not regarding with the same view as other addictions. We talk about the new UK Prime Minister, looking at his voting record as an MP to explore what kind of PM he will be, before moving into a discussion about representation. From there, we move into a deep conversation about Elon's Musk's takeover of Twitter and the reported increased in hate speech since his ownership. We talk about censorship, free speech, hate speech and what we can do about it. Full debate, strong points of view - we hope you enjoy the listen. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly & Hasan Khair
Recording this episode early on a Monday morning, we (Josh & Has) talk about hustling and the current backlash against it on social media. We discuss Whether we believe Liz Truss has much time left as Prime Minister (spoiler: we don't) and we talk about current activism in the UK and how people are responding to it. Josh introduces a little fun with our phones before moving onto the topic of online trolling. In this conversation, we dive into some comments Has received after posting a 115 Miles conversation on social media - we look at that and explore when online commentary has tones of prejudice and when it is sometimes simply making a point. We cover lots of ground, have lots of laughs and chat about some serious stuff too. We hope you enjoy it. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly & Hasan Khair.
In this episode, we (Josh Connolly and Hasan Khair) unsurprisingly go deep on the economic crisis affecting the UK. We discuss the current government's disastrous policies that have plunged society into further hardship by exploring some of the costs involved and who it will hit hardest (hint: it's not the top 1%!) Earlier in our check-in, we talk about perfectionism and needing to be in control and how that can drive pressure and anxiety. As usual, we try to take on the hardest topics through our normal approach - curiosity, humour and challenge. We hope you enjoy the discussion.
We have a running start on this episode as the trains really tried to stop Josh from getting to the 115 Miles studio. Trains cancelled, stuck in traffic and running late, Josh was further hindered by needing to really focus during his drive... you have to listen to find out why! As you'd expect the day after the Queen's funeral, our conversation was dominated by her passing. In true 115 style, we tried to dig a little deeper and explored our feelings around the events and also whether they conjured up any other feelings around the monarchy. Although most people will be ready to start moving on, we wanted to acknowledge this important moment in time for us here in the UK. Hope you enjoy it.
If you were on a deserted island, what would you need? This is how we (Josh and Has) start our conversation. You may be surprised by some of the answers. From there, we dive headfirst into the serious stuff. We talk about the cost of living crisis and its devastating impact on people and the lack of care or plan from the UK government to tackle this issue affecting the lower 50% of the economic ladder. We talk about the rising community movements - Enough is Enough and Don't Pay UK and how people are coming together. From there, we dive into the impact money worries have on people and their mental health. Finally - we talk about World Suicide Prevention Day and how you can actually 'lean in' and listen. You don't want to miss this one!
What did Americans use before toilet paper was invented? What did folks say before 'cheese' became the word for photos? What speed do sneezes come out? Yes - we tackle the big stuff on 115 Miles...Josh's facts make another appearance and as ever, you will leave more bountiful with knowledge. We have our emotional check in before diving into a very important discussion - does money make you happy? In this chat, we talk holistically, but also dive into some personal stories on the topic. Hope you enjoy!
We (Josh & Has) begin this episode by learning more about Josh's steam room business meetings and how he introduces contraband into the game. Has then asks Josh a series of questions in a segment he called 'Inside the Mind of Josh Connolly' where he discovered that Josh once gazed at Tom Hardy at Coral Reef swimming pool in Bracknell. There are plenty of other gems in this conversation. Onto the real topics of the day, Has introduces a saying "Fail we may, Sail we must" made famous by the late DJ & music producer, Andrew Weatherall, who had it tattooed on his arms after a conversation with a young Irish fisherman. We talk about the need to sometimes have to push through fear, anxiety and worry because for many, there often is no choice. We then talk about the Lionesses winning Euros and despite this fact, only receive £55,000 (compared to the men's team who received £300,000 for reaching the final) - we talk about the distance in pay parity still in existence. We say this all the time, but it's really a banger of an episode! You have to listen!
