SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 252, “In a World of Unlikely Friendships,” Kim discusses the power of Godly influence within relationships. Although we do not know for sure what Hiram the King of Tyre thought about the God of Israel before he met David, if he was like others in his country, it would not have been one of fondness. Yet, in verse 11 of 2 Chronicles, we see a glimpse of honor and adoration for the Lord. Might David's heart for God have influenced Hiram through their friendship?   Our focal passages for this episode are 1 Kings 5:1-12 and 2 Chronicles 2:1-16 with verses 1 Kings 5:1 and 2 Chronicles 2:11 as the focal verses:   1 King Hiram of Tyre had always been a loyal friend of David. When Hiram learned that David's son Solomon was the new king of Israel, he sent ambassadors to congratulate him.   11 King Hiram sent this letter of reply to Solomon: “It is because the Lord loves his people that he has made you their king! 12 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth! He has given King David a wise son, gifted with skill and understanding, who will build a Temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself. I'm visiting my grandma and she's totally focused on a piece of paper. Naturally, I ask her what she's looking at.  She tells me they're letters from my grandfather to her and her to my grandfather during wartime. Some are torn, some are yellowed from age, some are typed and some handwritten. I notice there's a suitcase next to her filled with hundreds of these aged letters. I'm curious, so I ask if I can read one. “Oh no no no,” she quickly responds. “A few of these are a little too risqué for you.”  She promises that these letters will be mine one day…  when she's gone. I'll never forget that conversation with her that afternoon. My grandparent's love story during wartime, the legacy of that love, and the way they saw the world are encapsulated and preserved in those letters forever. My guest today on the Storytelling School Podcast knows and appreciates the power of the written word. Tricia Lee is not only recognized as one of the new top writers in Hollywood with many accolades for writing (and directing) to her name already, but her stories stick with you long after you hear them. If you're curious to know: How can a different perspective influence stories you've seen a lot of times already? How did a wrong number become the impetus behind an award-winning feature film script? What can the animal world teach us about humanity? Then listen in as we discuss family and life incidents, unlikely friendships, the impact of putting meaning and feeling into your stories, overcoming writer's block, and more! What you will learn in this episode: Why truth (not necessarily facts) is key to a great story How journaling can help you solve “blank page syndrome” Why your story matters, even if you think it doesn't Who is Tricia? Tricia Lee is an AAPI female filmmaker who grew up in Toronto, Canada. She specializes in creating both heart-warming and heart-breaking but also humorously uplifting films. With her Canadian perspective, she likes to tell stories that look at the American Dream and explore ideas around voicelessness, belonging, and shared humanity.  Tricia's Good Chance feature script, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Janet Yang, was on the CAPE LIST and was also the Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Screenplay Competition grand prize winner and the Cinequest Best Feature Screenplay winner. It was also a top 50 finalist in The Academy Nicholl Fellowship, a top 14 finalist for the Universal Studios Writer's Program, and was selected for the prestigious Producers Guild of America Power of Diversity Master Workshop. In addition to these accolades, Tricia has directed three award-winning features such as Blood Hunters and Silent Retreat, with the former sold to Hulu and presented at Cannes and the latter released theatrically across Canada and sold to NBC Universal's Chiller Network. Currently, she's the showrunner and sole writer of eight episodes of 108 Media's animated anthology, A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts. Soon, she will direct a biopic about William Hung (of American Idol fame) that she wrote with Don Handfield, and Tony and Tim Bui serving as producers. In this episode, Girlz shares unlikely Friendship stories about friends who may be much older -  or younger than us - yet we still find a way to make strong and amazing connections. Perhaps the most unlikely pairings are the ones that begin as "frenemies" and turn into something glorious as the years' pass. We recognize friendship does not always happen like “magic” (like we experienced) but some of the most satisfying relationships are ones that began as diamonds in the rough. And the best part of this episode is it's being released on National Tell A Story Day. ABOUT US: J9 and KT are two Gen X'ers who reveal the secrets of a life-long friendship - from the lockers of middle school to high school, college + TWA, first jobs, engagements, marriages, raising children, step-parenting, cross-country moves, divorce, starting over, and finally - life in the empty-nest. Join them as they share how their friendship has ebbed and flowed since they met in 1979 - and all the hilarious stories they've collected along the way. Each episode highlights the value of friendship and offers takeaways to inspire you to reach out to an old friend, make a new friend, or how to be a totally awesome friend and everything that does (and doesn't work) to build real social connections that support well-being, bring you joy and make life better.

UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIPS One of the most acclaimed writers of his generation, poet, memoirist and novelist John Burnside today treats us to two new works. The hugely praised Ashland & Vine is the beautifully woven tale of an unlikely friendship between a grieving, semi-alcoholic widow and the elderly woman of whom she hopes to record the family history; Still Life with Feeding Snake is a poetry collection which hovers with great assurance on the brink of epiphany. Chaired by Stuart Kelly.

14 years ago I was working at a record store in Thornhill, Ontario. I vividly remembering racking copies of the Goldfinger's "Open Your Eyes" at the time. The cover of that record featured a rough looking tattooed guy who looked like he had just been punched in the face.   About 10 years later, I met that guy. And even though it got off to a rocky start, Chris Hammell has become one of the major influences on my life.  I'll let the podcast speak for itself, but to frame what you are about to hear, Chris & I dip in & out of travels, insights & relationships while riding a current of conversation that begins with Chris & I meeting in the Barber Shop he would soon be fired from. It was a low point in his life that he'd later turn into a strength and another great story. In the years since our very first meeting, I've learned many things from Chris and run many miles with him - all of which was not foreseen all those years ago.     ------------------ Chris "Hambone" Hammell / Town Barber @stillhambone The song in this episode is called Dead To Me by TotalXWar, Chris' band. Click here for more on these guys.

Alzheimer's and Our Pets Does your cat or dog seem confused? If your animal is older, it may have a condition called cognitive dysfunction syndrome. It's a disease similar to Alzheimer's. Recent studies estimate that 50% of dogs over 10 years and 53% of cats over 11 years show symptoms of CDS. Animals may get lost in their own yard, stuck in corners or under furniture, or stop recognizing people or responding to its name. Unlikely Heroes Fresh off the success of her best-seller, Unlikely Friendships, Jennifer Holland released Unlikely Heroes, a celebration of those animals that have done something noble for humans or other animals. You will be surprised and amazed at these valiant acts of heroism.
