Many people raised by toxic parents or caregivers don't always recognize the abuse present in their upbringing. It's often not until their adult relationships begin to break apart that they become aware of the abusive behavior patterns repeating from their childhood.    In this episode, I'm joined by mental health advocate and best-selling author Josh Connolly for a powerful and honest conversation about what toxic parenting really looks like and its lasting impact. We talk about parents' refusal to take accountability, how dysfunction gets passed off as the family “norm,” and why adult children carry guilt and shame about something they were once powerless to change.    Josh discusses his use of  the word “toxic,” and how emotional abuse often flies under the radar. Josh also explains his “body first” approach to recovery, including how reconnecting with your body—and using tools like breathwork—can help regulate your nervous system and make space for emotional clarity.   We tackle the popular notion of having to forgive in order to move forward, offering our explanation as to why this is not always the case, and discuss the difference between forgiveness and acceptance .   If you've experienced an upbringing within the context of toxic parenting, and as a result, have difficulty trusting your own internal experiences, or feel guilty for setting boundaries, you'll find this episode incredibly validating.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Introduction  03:06 Breathwork and Nervous System Regulation 05:23 Understanding Empathy and Boundaries 07:55 Defining Toxic Parents 09:00 Emotional Abuse and Power Dynamics 12:00 Misdiagnosis and Appropriate Reactions 17:10 Appropriate Reactions to Dysfunctional Environments 19:27 The Issue of Forgiveness 24:01 The Dangers of Pushing Forgiveness 27:06 Realizing the Truth About Toxic Upbringings 32:05 The Importance of Being Held and Supported 35:13 Josh Connolly's Book: Purpose and Content 42:06 The Importance of Truth and Authenticity   Links Connect with Josh Connolly: https://www.instagram.com/josh_ffw/ https://www.facebook.com/joshffw https://www.tiktok.com/@josh_ffw https://twitter.com/josh_ffw https://www.youtube.com/c/JoshConnolly_FFW   Connect with Dr. Z: https://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/ https://www.zgrouptherapy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dr.z_psychologist/ https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.z_psychologist https://www.youtube.com/@DrJaimeZuckerman   Get my FREE breathing exercise here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/newsletter Register for my on demand virtual courses here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/workshops Order my workbooks! *Find Your Calm / Find Good Habits* http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/books Shop my new Mindfully Messy hoodie here: http://www.drjaimezuckerman.com/apparel Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

How did Josh Connolly flip his script from addiction to sobriety, football violence to self-expression, and low self-worth to helping other men find emotional resilience? In this conversation, Josh shares the impact of having an alcoholic father, and why he wrote his taboo-busting book It's Them, Not You about managing difficult family relationships by prioritizing yourself. We explore how unmet childhood needs shape our sense of safety and why learning to feel and trust emotions in the body—not rationalizing them in our mind (guilty!) —helps us better connect with who we truly are. Josh is a resilience coach, breathwork facilitator, community builder and passionate ambassador for NACOA, the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. By sharing the impact of addiction on his childhood, and his own recovery from addiction and low self-worth, he helps thousands of men lean into their emotions and find community. Plus, we discuss The Laundry List, the traits common to children of alcoholics and share the little daily anchors that keep us in our sweet spot for everyday happiness… Oh, and we discover why Josh checks his bin every day… Josh's book, It's Them, Not You – How to Break Free from Toxic Parents and Reclaim Your Story, is out now. In this episode of The New Mind Podcast, host Ella McCrystal welcomes Josh Connolly for an insightful discussion on the effects of toxic parenting and its profound impact on emotional and mental health.Josh shares his personal journey, emphasising the role of somatic experiencing and trauma healing as vital pathways toward recovery. A key theme is how individuals, especially those raised in toxic environments, often deny their own realities and disconnect from their bodies as coping mechanisms. This can manifest as emotional suppression, with societal expectations and rigid gender roles compounding the issue, particularly when it comes to expressing emotions like anger. The conversation highlights how vital it is to validate emotions, acknowledge their presence, and find healthy outlets for releasing them. It also discusses social anxiety and the body's natural response to discomfort, stressing the importance of finding supportive people and communities. Breathwork emerges as a powerful tool for reconnecting with the body, calming the mind, and addressing lingering trauma from childhood.Self-perception, shaped by childhood experiences, is another core focus, with forgiveness playing a critical but nuanced role in healing.Eastern philosophies are praised for offering insights into slowing down, tuning into the body, and prioritising mental well-being in an era of hyper-capitalism, which often exacerbates mental health challenges. The pressures of parenting, especially for those recovering from their own childhood trauma, are discussed alongside the power of somatic work to heal emotional wounds.Josh Connolly is credited for fostering a safe, insightful space throughout the discussion, providing thoughtful guidance on navigating these complex issues.Subscribe to The New Mind podcast for more uplifting and insightful conversations that explore the depths of mental health, personal growth, and inspiring stories of individuals making a difference in the world.Thank youConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ellamccrystal Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ellamccrystalhypno   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ella_mccrystalWeb: https://www.ellamccrystal.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EllaMcCrystalConnect with Josh: Instagram: https://www.instagram.comjosh_ffwWeb: https://www.joshconnolly.co.ukFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/joshffwYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JoshConnolly_FFW

He is one of the UK's most influential mental health advocates and has spoken in the House of Commons, to help shape mental health policy, but life didn't start there. Josh grew up in a household with an alcoholic parent, which had a massive impact on his life. He remembers a lot of feelings of fear and shame and by the time he was 12 Josh was using alcohol. Cut to 24 and Josh was a dad to four children and separated from their mum. That's when he realised he needed to stop drinking. He joined a 12 step programme and got sober, but all the emotions he'd been suppressing came back. Hearing Josh's story of going from a dark, deep depression, to using his experiences to help other people is truly inspirational. We're so grateful to Josh for joining us

Josh Connolly is a powerful man, but not in the way that you may instantly think of that phrase. Yesh he plays rugby, he has also overocome addiction, so we can say that objectively he is strong, both physically and mentally, but there's much more to Josh than that. The power that Josh has - and teaches to others - is to actually embrace our emotions, to be vulnerable with them, to be sensitive to them. Sensitivty and vulnerability are not words you often associate with power, but as Josh shows those who attend his resilience workshops or breathwork sessions, there is so much power that comes from a foundation of vulnerability.

Problems experienced in childhood can impact our quality of life as adults. Growing up in an unhealthy or toxic family can contribute to a number of emotional, interpersonal, and mental health challenges. A toxic childhood could include any of the following experiences; your emotional needs weren't met by caretakers, your parents were controlling, neglectful, or overprotective, you experienced abuse (e.g. physical, verbal, emotional, sexual) or you experienced or witnessed traumatic situations. A toxic parent, in the most simplest of breakdowns, is a parent that puts their needs before their child. Being emotionally let down by our parents or caregivers can cause a conflict of uncomfortable and very painful feelings, we might battle with for the rest of our lives. Resilience coach, keynote speaker, mental health ambassador and influencer Josh Connolly helps his clients become unstuck from the past due to the way they were raised. Talking to host Gabby, Josh explains the different ways dysfunctional or toxic parents can cause such painful wounds. Josh discusses how helping his clients release stored trauma and repressed upsetting emotions is fundamental to healing the hurt from the past. Josh also reassures Gabby why it's normal to feel strange and uncomfortable when beginning the work to heal your inner child... but also how important the process is to bring you to a place of freedom and peace. “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again and this time more intelligently.” - Henry Ford I love that quote and it's perfectly applicable for today's podcast. Today's topic is resilience and restarting and emotional intelligence, and my guest today is one of the world's experts on the topic. He shares his own raw and unapologetic authentic story of coming from the ashes of darkness and pivoting his life. He shares ways that we can increase our emotional IQ and how we can be a rock for those who depend on us.  Josh Connolly is one of the UK's most influential mental health advocates. He has appeared multiple times on the BBC, ITV and Channel 5 News.  He has spoken in the House of Commons to contribute to policy on mental health issues. He was also a script consultant for the TV show Hollyoaks. Thanks to his motto "It's fighting against what we feel is what gets us problems" Josh Connolly has run workshops on resilience in schools and for many brands around the world. Since 2014 he has been an ambassador for Nacoa, an association that supports children of alcoholic parents. Today, Josh speaks openly on the importance of emotional intelligence as a way to optimize our relationships. He also shares his incredibly authentic story and going through dark times in his life where he actually considered ending it all and how he can use our humility as a superpower to inspire others. In the penultimate episode of 2022, we (Josh & Has) actually start with a serious chat around whether we are currently in one of the worst times of society...but fear not, we pick things up and explore our cringiest memories, what we'd do with a time machine and a challenge exclusively for Josh to consider. The now infamous 'emotional check in' takes a different spin  - looking at the yin/yang of feelings we might be having - showing that we can hold many things at once. We then wade into Matt Hancock on Celebrity Jungle - and explore whether the nation has forgiven him (and we bring up a previous episode around Joe Rogan too). Our next conversation takes us into people power - and whether under the most extreme pressure-even very obedient societies - all crack. This is a great conversation - exploring tough topics with strong opinions  - we hope you enjoy it. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly and Hasan Khair.

This was all in the first 6 minutes! From there, we had a deeper personal check in around health, systems, ripple effects and the power of our minds in forming good & bad habits. We then wade deep into the controversy of the World Cup - exploring the strong feelings about this particular event, human rights and the hypocrisy of many people around it. This was an important conversation - one that we hope will get others to have a think about their views on it. 115 Miles is a podcast by Josh Connolly and Hasan Khair

December 2019 I've just finished delivering my resilience workshop with another global organisation.Back then I believed that resilience was the ability to keep going no matter what, to avoid any struggle and show up. That ideal drove me to a place where I felt the best thing to do for my children was to take my own life.Today I have a new idea of resilience. One that is fluid, that allows me to struggle and ask for help. One that allows me to keep my head up and shoulders back in spite of my internal struggles. One that embraces vulnerability and keeps me reachable. One that helps me to understand what I feel, know what I need as a result and be able to communicate that within my activities and relationships.Rather than driving me to suicide, this idea of resilience has helped to deliver emotional resilience training to village primary schools and global brands alike.I don't believe I'm a new person, I'm the same person, with the same emotions.
