This episode is a listener suggestion from Derina. This story takes place in London in September of 2021.28-year-old Sabina Nessa was an elementary school or primary school teacher as it would be referred to in London. She lived in an affordable southeast London neighborhood that housed young families & professionals. Only a year after she'd gotten her teaching degree, & in September of 2019, Sabina had gotten her dream job, teaching five & six-year-old students in year one at Rushey Green Primary School in Catford. Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending. Allison tells us the rest.Want BONUS EPISODES!? As part of Al Jazeera's series on murdered women, we explore the life and death of Sabina Nessa. Her family say she was ‘a kind and generous soul'. But they question why there was not wider media attention about her death and why some lives get more coverage than others. Written by Julie Bindel. Read by Laura Lockwood.
Sabina ness was walking to meet her friend through a park when Koci Selamaj was lurking looking for a victim. Join me in my latest True Crime episode where I take you through the events that happened on the evening of 17th September 2021.
If you're a woman, how many times have you been out in the evening, or even just doing a late shift at work, and the prospect of getting home at night fills you with dread? Sadly safety dilemmas are nothing new for women but since the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa last year, these feelings have been heightened. My guest this episode has chosen to take action and do something about it this. Emma Kay is the founder of an app called Walk Safe. We discuss the reasons she created this app (which include obscene cat calls in front of her child!), how it works, and how young girls and women can strike a balance between being streetwise and safe.
In a week where: Ketanji Brown Jackson becomes the first black woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court. Koci Selamaj is jailed for a minimum of 36 years for the murder of Sabina Nessa. Will Smith is banned from The Oscars for 10 years. Pakistan PM Imran Khan's government loses a no-confidence vote. Boris Johnson & Rishi Sunak are fined for 'party gate' COVID rule-breaking. In Music: (6:30) Ed Sheeran wins his copyright case. But this might be one of many in the coming years as music output becomes far more frequent than in past eras.In Theatre: (18:51) Poet & essayist Claudia Rankine has created a play out of asking white people about white privilege. It's a cool concept and makes me want to be better in being a bridge in highlighting societal ills. But I might be too jaded. In Art: (33:06) Whether you're a photographer, writer, musician or painter, it's always encouraged to find a niche within it. But should you? Is it essential? In some ways, yes. But overall, probably not.Lastly, in Life: (45:22) It is always worth getting life lessons. It's even more worth getting life lessons from people that are aware their days are numbered. I unlock a lesson that benefits myself and it might for you as well.Thank you for listening! The sister of murdered primary teacher Sabina Nessa said if their family was a "normal British white family" they would have been treated better. Her sister, Jebina Yasmin Islam, said newspapers had treated her sister's murder "differently" to the murder of Sarah Everard. "My sister didn't get as much headlines, I feel, at the start," she said. "Maybe was it down to her ethnicity? "She didn't get the front pages on some of the papers, and in Sarah Everard's case she did." Commenting on the treatment of her family, she said: "I think it's just down to our ethnicity to be honest.” Koci Selamaj was jailed for life for attacking Ms Nessa in a park in south-east London in September 2021. An online tool set up by the Met Police to help the public report places where they feel unsafe in the capital, has received more than 3,000 since it was set up.The force launched StreetSafe in September 2021, following the deaths of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.Since then almost three quarters of the reports it has received have been from women. Most of them related to poor street lighting and CCTV coverage, but the Met said there were also reports of men verbally harassing women, which it had tackled successfully by introducing more police patrols in those areas.Women's rights activist Patsy Stevenson, and Anna Birley from Reclaim These Streets discuss the tool, how effective it is, and what more can be done to keep women and girls safe.In this episode:Patsy's opinion of the StreetSafe tool (1.10)Does lighting & CCTV make people feel safer? A 5 minute walk turned into the last thing Sabina Nessa would ever do. Being a woman can be so powerful yet so dangerous as well
At night women say goodbye, telling each other "text me when you're home". We carry keys between our knuckles, avoid dark streets, cross the road, then cross back again, keep looking over your shoulder. In Night Watch, four women from different parts of Britain share stories of street harassment. Woven through this feature is a new, specially commissioned poem by Hollie McNish. The murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa compounded the perception of city streets as male spaces- unwelcoming and unsafe for women, and other marginalised groups. Is this the way it's always been? In these raw and unfiltered accounts women will hear their own experiences echoed back in others' words; stories of shouted insults, rejected come-ons, intimidation. Featuring the voices Nosisa and Alison Majuqwana, Aggie Hewitt, Katie Cuddon, Alice Jackson the co-founder of Strut Safe, author Rebecca Solnit, author and moral philosopher at Cornell University Kate Manne and design activist Jos Boys. Second episode a conversation with one of the realist talented person i know… @priyasashaa which i had to bring back for this season. We discuss her latest shows she has been very busy with. We also discuss on a very important topic off women getting attacked (Sabina Nessa, Sarah Everard discussion). How priya copes with media work, acting, shows whilst working a full time job. The balance. Enjoy the episode
It's been a worrying week with further concerns over the Queen's health, so royal editor Russell Myers updates host Zoe Forsey on everything we know so far. While the Monarch is missing COP26, we look ahead to next week's event and what we can expect from Prince Charles, Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. And for the first time in far, far too long, we're very excited to say we have some royal tour news and we discuss the Cambridges' very fancy start to their half-term holiday. We also talk about Camilla's moving tribute to Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa in her landmark speech calling for an end to sexual violence against women.
This episode is all about womens safety. This topic is really personal both both Cal and Izzy. Following the deaths of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa in the UK, there has been an increase in ‘advice' from politicians and police focussing on how women can keep ‘safe' from sexual assault and violence. The argument is often that the advice offered by police and various organisations protects women. So If we disregard the hugely problematic narrative of victim-blaming, are they simply pragmatic tips that keep us safe? Or surely there's another way to tackle the endemic issue of gender-based violence that doesn't involve putting all the onus on women to protect themselves... This is a hugely personal topic for Cal and Izzy. If you are affected by the information discussed or you are struggling in anyway please do not hesitate to reach out. Are we making progress in the war against gender inequality? If anyone should know, it's Caroline Criado Perez. A couple of years ago, she released Invisible Women: Exposing Gender Bias in a World Designed for Men. It was a book, founded upon an enormous amount of research, that made explicit something known instinctively by many: the world we move in was not created with women in mind, and that the repercussions of that oversight are too many to count, ranging in impact from minor annoyance to potentially life-threatening. With the recent murders of Sabina Nessa and Sarah Everard once again focusing attention on the treatment of women in society, we thought it a pertinent time to ask Caroline onto Changes, to discuss the ways things have and haven't shifted since her book exploded onto the scene. As you will hear, there is cause for sadness and frustration, as always, but there is also more reason than ever to educate yourself and join the fight. Hey guys, thank you for tuning in to another episode. This week we spoke about media coverage and how it impacts society's ideology and perception. We touched on different cases such as Shamima Begum & Sabina Nessa. We discussed how being muslim and proud can sometimes cause discomfort for others in society, and how the media can impact this too. There were some really interesting things that came out. Leave your opinions in the comments below, we would love to know your experiences! Radio DJ Emma Wilson believes that the policeman Wayne Couzens who kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah Everard exposed himself to her in an alleyway some 13 years ago. Emma reported it to the police at the time – no action was taken, but she has decided to speak out now because when she did report it she was not happy with the response. One of the key findings of our equality poll to mark our 75th anniversary has been the extent to which women don't feel equal when it comes to issues of sexual abuse and exploitation. Almost 70% of the women we asked said it was a concern and the issue is currently front and centre of the news agenda following the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa to name just two women. Emma Barnett talks to the writer Joan Smith and the former Victims Commissioner the Conservative Peer Baroness Newlove who is unimpressed by Boris Johnson's unwillingness to recognise misogyny as a hate crime and is trying to change the law on the issue. Probably best known to most for her television role as lawyer Lucca Quinn in The Good Wife and then the follow-up series The Good Fight, Cush Jumbo is currently playing Hamlet at the Young Vic in London. Delayed for a year by the pandemic, the play sold out months before opening. As the first woman of colour to play the part in a major production on a British stage she joins a list that goes back to 1741 of UK female actors playing the Prince of Denmark. Cush joins Emma. On Radio 4's Day of the Scientist, we looks at women's trust in science. The latest Public Attitudes to Science survey found that women are less likely to feel connected to science in their everyday lives; less likely to actively engage with science; and were less trusting of scientists and media reporting of scientific issues. What's going on to put women's faith in science on such shaky ground? Emma speaks to Megan Halpern, assistant professor in the history, philosophy and sociology of science at Michigan State University, and Dr Emily Dawson from University College London, who researches how people learn about and engage with science – and why so many women are being put off. In a week where the man who murdered Sarah Everard was sentenced and Sabina Nessa's killer was arrested, we look at how safe women are, in all aspects of their lives. We speak to Kat from Women's Aid about the work they are doing to ensure women have a safe place to live, how the money raised from the 1.6 Women's Aid Challenge will go to help countless women and their children living with abuse. We also speak to a woman who is standing up to sexual harassment in a workplace with deep rooted misogyny, she is fighting for the right to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. We start reading ‘Unbound' by Tarana Burke and begin to get to know the powerful woman she is today from her traumatic early years, and our Foodie Collective cooks up a dish high in phytoestrogens which is extremely tasty! And as we come to the end of our WI 1.6 sea swimming challenge for Women's Aid, we reveal our total to date from the donations we have received from the amazing Collective. We have been appalled at what is coming out of the press in the last week about language used around rape, how police forces around the UK need to be accountable for the heinous actions of Sarah Everard's killer. The total lack of understanding of women's fear, they might as well have been talking from another planet, yes, we're talking about the infamous Kit Malthouse and Phillip Allot both men In extremely powerful positions. Women's Aid is a charity it is a grassroots federation working together to provide life-saving services in England and build a future where domestic abuse is not tolerated. Our guest, Kat, is a senior support worker with Women's Aid and she joins Jinty for a talk about the work they do, the statistics for domestic abuse in England and Wales are shocking and we get to know what our fundraising is doing to help this charity. Sexual harassment in the workplace is sadly, nowhere near a thing of the past, we speak to a brave woman who is standing up and fighting against sexual abuse and harassment as she tries to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. Sam talks about the deep rooted misogyny she has had to deal with while working as a gas engineer in a company that allows women to be treated as objects rather than giving them space to learn and grow their careers. The Book Collective crack the spine of Tarana Burke's ‘Unbound' a powerful memoir from the founder and activist behind the Me Too movement. In the opening chapters we learn about Tarana's life and the rape and abuse she suffered at the hands of older boys and how a woman's words made sure she never told of her ordeal. It's a painfully brilliant start to this book. Next week we will be reading from Breath Again to and including Indelible. The Foodie Collective are still in Menopause food month and Jinty, once again cooks a delicious dish this week of Sticky Tofu which is full of phytoestrogens! She explains about each ingredient and how you can cook this yourself. https://www.sixvegansisters.com/2020/03/19/sweet-sour-tofu/ We reveal the total for our Women's Aid challenge and are so thankful and humbled by every donation. Why are the media so focused on the murders ethnicity instead of covering his horrible crime. Instagram question: - My boyfriend has kept pictures and videos of him and his ex. I made him delete them. Been together 3 years. Why do men do this? FYI the videos were sexual. Dilemma of the week: Title of the email: Am I being reasonable. This was filmed a week before Sarah Everards case resurfaced and her killer was sentenced to life imprisonment. Her case is a scary reminder that those in positions of authority aren't always working in your best interests and again proves that women are not safe anywhere… or with anyone. In this episode we discuss some serious topics around women's safety and the unfortunate passing of Sabina Nessa.
03:45 — AOC cried in the club, and by the club we mean congress. WTF is up with that? What is in her chart? 26:00 — Did you ever notice Grimes and (Elon) Musk have the grossest two names together, ever? Thankfully they broke up. We explain what they saw in each other in the first place, and why the artist formerly known as Claire Boucher is way way better off without that musky ass. 45:00 — Justice is finally being served! In the cases of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, alleged killers have been located and/or charge. R. Kelly was guilty on all accounts (and Molly realizes her chart has way too much in common with his). Even Alex Jones had to pay up this week. Libra season is functioning as it should. It's not much but it's definitely an improvement over last week. 57:00 — A new and more ~*emosh*~ Britney Spears documentary just dropped and we're loving it. Plus, Britney's dad has been removed as her conservator. Praise Libra!!
This week we talk about the disappearance and murder of Sabina Nessa and why it took so long to feature in the press. We also revisit broader themes on the violence that women experience at the hands of men. It's not light-hearted, but it might help to fuel the fire in your belly, and Annabel does talk about star signs at one point...so there is that. Thanks for listening. Lakshmi & Annabel x

On Friday, 17 September 2021, Sabina Nessa, a primary school teacher living in London, walked to meet her friends at a pub at 8:30 pm. But she never made it there. “Women should be able to walk home or to meet friends without the fear of being murdered.”When we posted our ‘She was just walking home' episode, we said we would continue to talk about this. And there's still so much to do. Please listen to our latest episode: Her name was Sabina Nessa and help us carry on the conversation.
This is a special one - the very first episode of 115 Miles with us (Josh and Has) in the same room together. After an awkward feeling start, we move into the main topics on our minds, which unsurprisingly begins with the "fuel crisis" in the UK and a discussion about who's actually responsible for it. We then discuss the tragic death of Sabina Nessa and the difference in both reporting of her death and the subsequent national reaction, compared to the tragic death of Sarah Everard. We talk about police tactics, policy and the notion of modifying behaviour. Finally - we move into the subject of youth funding cuts and it's long term implications for society. Today we give a shout out to the amazing charity Power The Fight, working tirelessly to 'End Youth Violence' and improve the lives of communities affected by it. Please check them out and if it resonates, make a donation to the cause: https://www.powerthefight.org.uk/

This episode has been created in the light of the recent murder of Sabina Nessa who was killed taking a 5 minute walk to the pub at night, the murder of Sarah Everard early this year who also was walking alone at night when she was killed as well as the 100s of women who have similar stories who have all fallen victim of the same heinous crime. In the United Kingdom, we are currently facing what much of the media is now recognising as a femicide in our country. Statistics show that between 2009 and 2019 , a women was killed by a man in a similar way every three days.We have normalised the emphasis to need to text each other when we get home after departing on our journeys back to our respective houses, The fear of being attacked, harassed or both are so real that this is an automatic phrase every woman across the world will say to their female companions. How did we as a global community get here? And better yet, how can we start doing our part to change this? What changes are possible when we reclaim our divine feminine power so that being a woman does not automatically equate being someone's prey if we are alone regardless of where you live on the planet?Don't forget to take a screenshot whilst you're listening to the episode - share it on your FB and/or IG stories and tag me @thehealingroseholistics : ). At Womenkind Collective we aim to myth bust and inform on subjects that are relevant to what's happening now, we question, chat and research diverse topics and today's podcast is brimming with diversity. We meet Jinty's brother, Neil, & together they explain why yoga is a philosophy, the importance of a daily practice and that absolutely anyone can do yoga. We talk breast cancer and how to check your boobs, also the 9to5 movement and why sadly this is still as relevant today as it was 40 years ago. We complete Fern Riddell's Sex Lessons From History with some astonishing stories and we reveal next month's book for the Collective. There's also the final love food for the month and our end of month Wine Collective. A jam packed podcast full of information and laughs! Siblings Jinty and Neil are the founders of Ashtanga Yoga Exmouth we hear their inspiring story how Neil started his yoga journey and how Jinty reluctantly in the beginning became involved. We learn what yoga is, it's not just exercise it's a philosophy not a religion, and knowing that you are enough, it's a huge question that the pair answer and give an insight into a yogic way of life. We learn how yoga has impacted positively on their lives, calming situations that would normally have caused them both to have reacted differently. They myth bust on why anyone can do yoga. If we could only do quarter of an hour of yoga a day it will make your life lighter and make you enjoy life to its fullest. Plus there's 3 inspiring tips of a yogic life. There's a Queen Dolly fest to chat about Lou gets furious about the film 9 to 5, misogyny in the workplace and she researched to find out that it is based on a movement in the 1970's about empowering women in the workplace. Jinty talks about getting to know your body and what to feel for in your vulva and breasts when checking for possible cancer, we learn that breast cancer under 40 is still quite rare and is the second most common cancer. The Collective also find out their drag Queen names- What will yours be? The final week of the book Collective reads the last 3 chapters of Fern Riddell's Sex Lessons From History, there is a lot of female power and we find out how a group of women helped convict Dr Crippin. The final chapter brings the book together and makes us remember that sex should be enjoyed and consensual by all parties, be loud, have smells and be noisy. Fern completes the book beautifully with the #metoo movement, which is where we go to next with our new book for the Collective, Unbound Tarana Burke My Story of Liberation and the birth of the me too movement. The Wine Collective sip on this month's choices, Lou's choice this month is a rose, Quintessence Mediterranee from M&S and is priced at £9 a bottle, it's a fruity number and is best served chilled. Jinty has a non-alcoholic drink and this month it's a Pentire Seaward, it's a Cornish botanical drink, it's made from local botanicals grown on Cornish headlands, priced at £24 a bottle and is mixed with a tonic or ginger beer. The Foodie Collective completes the Love Food month, Jinty (as usual) cooked a beautiful pear, cinnamon and vanilla crumble, who knew that a pear is an aphrodisiac? Well this tasty pudding is vegan and can be served warm or cold. Email or message us for the recipe. The WI Sea swimming for Women's Aid 1.6 challenge is still underway and will the pair complete their challenge of 16 sea swims this month? People are talking about the UK's fuel queues. Driver shortages, an energy crisis and rising inflation... But are we really heading towards a new "Winter of Discontent" (like the one in 1978)? To find out, we've got the BBC's political reporter from back in the day, Nick Jones. And the killing of 28-year-old primary school teacher, Sabina Nessa, in south-east London, has reignited the conversation about women's safety on the streets. Adam is joined by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary Zoë Billingham, and Janey Starling, co-director of the feminist organisation, Level Up, to discuss what more needs to be done to protect women from violence. Today's Newscast was made by Rick Kelsey with producers Georgia Coan and Alix Pickles. The studio director was Emma Crowe. Sam Bonham was the assistant editor.
The 80s was the era of day time raving for thousands of British South Asian Kids from cities across the UK from Bradford to Birmingham, Manchester to London. People called them Daytimers. They were kids skipping school to go clubbing in the daytime to avoid the rules imposed on them about going out at night. Forty years later, Daytimers UK is back as a collective of British Asian DJs. Anita Rani speaks to DJ RITU, one of the pioneers of the Asian Underground music scene in the 1980s, to DJ Priya and also to Gracie T from Daytimers UK collective. We talk to Annie Gibbs who's organising a vigil for Sabina Nessa, the 28 year old who was murdered in a south-east London park last week. Many children find themselves unable to attend school due to severe anxiety, often the result of mental health issues or unmet special educational needs. However, unless parents can provide medical evidence of mental health issues, some schools mark this down as an "unauthorised absence" leaving parents open to prosecution. We discuss with Ellie Costello, Director of Square Peg; Dr Mary Bousted, Joint General-Secretary of the National Education Union; and Colette, a parent. This week the government announced that folic acid is to be added to UK flour to prevent conditions like Spina Bifida. Welcome back to Maybe Daily episode 16. Twenty-four hours since the last one so today's episode is more of the real thing compared to the previous. Here I will briefly talk about the Sabina Nessa murder, what we know, how people can help and mostly what it reminds us all. Clue in the episode title.
With police investigating the killing of Sabina Nessa, are our streets safe for women?
A vigil is going to take place in Kent in memory of a teacher who police believe may have been murdered as she made a five minute journey to meet a friend. Sabina Nessa is thought to have been killed in a park in Kidbrooke Village last Friday night - the 28-year-old's body was found near a community centre the following day. Naomi Gale from Margate is encouraging women to gather in the town at the same time a similar vigil is held in south-east London. Also in today's podcast, drivers on the M25 in Kent could face more disruption from Insulate Britain protesters - despite a new injunction. Hear from a Kent man who says he's prepared to be arrested again. As freshers week continues in Canterbury it's hoped students returning to campus won't lead to an increase in Covid cases. More than 35,000 uni students - including 10,000 freshers - are heading back to the city. And we've been catching up with River Medway before her first appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race UK which returns to our screens tonight.
Police Minister, Kit Malthouse, talks to Woman's Hour about violence towards women in the light of Sabina Nessa's murder. We talk to him about the funding and strategies that were promised to how the police will act at Friday's evening vigil for Sabina. We speak to Professor Adam Balen, a consultant in reproductive Medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, about why he thinks it's a good idea to have special messages in contraceptive packages advising people not to leave it too late if they want a baby. We discuss flexible working and how it really works in practice. At the moment when you've lasted 26 weeks in your job you have the right to request flexible working, but now there are government plans to let you make that request from day one. We speak to Emma Stewart from Timewise who wants those plans to go even further and to Leanne Skelton who runs a nursery and worries that more flexibility will be a logistical nightmare. And we speak to two women who love gaming, but say there's some alarming and worrying abuse towards women and non-white gamers. They are Shay Thompson, a gaming journalist and presenter as well as Cassie Hughes who's the co-founder of Black Twitch UK.
