Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
When you apply for a medical certificate, you are required to complete FAA Form 8500-8. Falsifying any information on this form can subject you to a five of $250,000 and five years in prison. If you have concerns about your ability to obtain a medical certificate, I recommend consulting an advisor before applying for your medical. One such advisor is David Hale, who you met in RFT 364. There are several situations in which a pilot can find himself/herself without a medical certificate. One such case could be where the pilot has simply allowed his/her medical certificate to lapse. Another case could be where the pilot applies for a certificate and is denied due to a medical issue that the FAA considers disqualifying. In that case, the pilot may not use any of the other strategies, such as BasicMed or Sport Pilot medical. Even with a denial, the pilot may continue to fly with a certificated pilot acting as Pilot In Command (PIC), as long as the aircraft does not require a copilot. The pilot may operate the controls, from either seat, but the pilot without a medical is officially a passenger. Many aircraft owners who have lost their medicals use this strategy. If there has not been a denial from the FAA, there are other avenues available to General Aviation (GA) pilots. The pilot may operate as a Sport Pilot, flying a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA). An LSA is an aircraft that: Has a maximum gross takeoff weight of 1,320 lbs. Has a maximum stall speed of 51 mph (45 knots) Has a maximum speed in level flight of 130 mph (120 knots) Has two-place maximum seating Has single, non-turbine engine, fixed propeller, fixed landing gear. With a Sport Pilot certificate, the pilot may use his/her driver’s license in place of a medical certificate. See more at https://www.flysportusa.com/med_cert.php. One step up from the Sport Pilot medical is BasicMed. Under BasicMed, pilots can get an authorization from their personal medical providers rather than from FAA Airman Medical Examiners (AMEs). The pilot completes a BasicMed Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklistand gets a physical exam with a state-licensed physician. The pilot then completes a BasicMed Online Course. That’s it – nothing else required. Under BasicMed, the pilot may operate an aircraft with: a maximum gross weight of 6000 lbs up to 6 seats capable of flying at a maximum speed of 250 knots maximum altitude 18,000 feet VFR or IFR Using BasicMed, the pilot cannot operate for compensation or hire. One additional avenue for a pilot is to fly a glider, since no medical is required to fly a glider. Above all, common sense should prevail – if you’re not healthy enough to fly (whether or not you have a medical), don’t fly!

What better way to start out the new year than by learning about some animals that fly (or glide) without wings! Thanks to Llewelly for suggesting the colugo! Colugo looking startled: A colugo, flying, which startles everyone else: Flying fish! ZOOM! A flying gurnard, not flying: Flying squid! ZOOM! Flying squid close-up, mid-zoom: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. It’s the first week of a new year, so let’s start it off right and learn about some animals that fly without wings. The first of our non-winged flying animals is a suggestion from Llewelly, who sent me some links about it and we both freaked out a little because it’s such an awesome animal. It’s called the colugo, and technically it doesn’t fly, it glides. It looks kind of like a big squirrel and kind of like a small lemur, and in fact it’s also sometimes called a flying lemur. But it’s not closely related to squirrels or lemurs. It’s actually not related closely to anything alive today. Before we learn about the colugo specifically, let me explain a little bit about gliding animals. Gliding animals have a flap of skin called a gliding membrane or patagium. In the case of gliding mammals, like the flying squirrel or the colugo, the patagium connects each foreleg with the hindleg on that side. When the animal wants to glide, it stretches its legs out, which also stretches out the patagium. For a long time scientists assumed that the patagium was just skin and didn’t do anything except increase the animal’s surface area and act as a sort of parachute. But it turns out that the patagium contains tiny muscles like those recently discovered in the membranes of bat wings. And the skin between the fingers of the bat’s forelimbs, which creates the wings, are actually considered patagia. In fact, any gliding membrane, even if it’s part of a real wing, is considered a patagium, so birds actually have them too. The colugo has a patagium between its legs like other gliding mammals, but it also has a patagium between its hind legs and its tail, and even its fingers and toes are connected with small patagia. It’s the most well-adapted mammal known for gliding, so well-adapted that it can glide incredible distances. One was measured as having glided almost 500 feet in one jump, or 150 meters. This is almost the length of two football fields. The colugo lives in South Asia and is endangered mainly due to habitat loss. It grows to about 16 inches long, or 40 cm, with a small head, big eyes, and little round ears. It’s gray with some mottled white and black markings that help hide it against tree trunks, and its legs are long and slender. It eats plants. We don’t know a whole lot about the colugo, because it’s shy and lives in the treetops of tropical forests, but what we do know is really weird. For instance, its babies. If you listened to episode 45 about monotremes, where we also discuss the differences between marsupial and placental mammals, you may remember that placental mammal babies are born mostly developed while marsupial mammal babies are born very early and finish developing outside of the mother, either in a pouch or just clinging to the mother’s fur. Well, the colugo is a placental mammal, but its babies are born extremely early, more like a marsupial. They finish developing outside of the mother, which takes six months or so, and the mother colugo keeps her tail curved up most of the time so that her patagium is wrapped around her babies like a pouch. The colugo has weird teeth, too. The front teeth, or incisors, are shaped like tiny combs. This is similar to the incisors of lemurs, which look like tiny combs because the lemur uses them as tiny combs to groom its fur. But unlike any other mammal known, some of the colugo’s upper incisors have two roots instead of just one. Why? No one knows. So what is the colugo related to? For a long time,

Las Vegas' favorite Toy Squad returns with Episode 14, and this time they're flying by the seats of their pantaloons, with the security of neither a guest nor a main topic. Rick, Rob and Frank simply shoot the schtuff for a solid (but fast-paced) hour, then before things get "chockablock" (ask Frank), the fun really begins as Patti emcees a game of VTS Nerd Trivia to determine which Squad member reigns as Nerd Supreme (hint... it's NOT Rob). Topics range from "Bohemian Rhapsody" (see it!) to the Vegas Valley Comic Book Fest, to The Walking Dead (spoiler alert!), to Frank's quest for something "clean" to read on the airplane. Just because there's no special guest doesn't mean it isn't special!

Today’s episode features track and field coach Mike Goss. Mike is a physical education instructor of 20 years, and has been coaching track and field on the high school, club and NCAA Division I collegiate level for over 25 years. Currently Mike is coaching independently the club “Flying Without Wings”, and is an assistant at Parkview HS, the Georgia 7A state runner-up in 2017. I first met Mike at the Central Virginia Sports Performance Seminar back in 2015, but I knew of his work well before then by reading his track and field, jumps training articles on Speedendurance.com. Mike is an experienced coach, has a thirst for knowledge, and has lots of success over the years, coaching numerous track and field champions in the long, high and triple jumps. His creative and unique practice methods contain ideas that we can all utilize in our efforts to get the most out of our athletes while building a great environment for them. Not only is Mike a great coach, but he is also one of the most generous people I know in terms of giving his time to coach those in need of assistance. His spirit and love for the sport is something we can all aspire towards. One article of Mike’s that stuck with me, and prompted me to purchase Tadeusz Starzynski’s book on jump training was looking at his work with speed squats, where he tracked the amount of time it took athletes to perform a particular amount of reps, and weight could only increase given only a small increase in the time needed to perform the repetitions. For today’s episode, we’ll cover Mike’s philosophy on training track and field jumpers, coaching rhythms, approaches to plyometrics, particularly in setting up competitions for those plyometric exercises, as well as strength training for jumpers. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Mike’s background and introduction to coaching Mike’s philosophy in training track and field jumpers Coaching jumping and approach rhythms Approaches to plyometrics in youth, high school and collegiate jumpers Mike’s multi-jump practice competitions Strength training for the jumping events Quotes “If you are playing hopscotch and skipping rope, that is a level of plyometrics” “I’m amazed at the young people who play sports who never really learned to skip or hop athletically” “The Nordic hamstring is one of the best things we can do” “If you can do a pistol squat correctly, you are an athlete” “(In martial artists strikes) It was found that an 80% effort was a maximal power output, rather than 100%” “Track and Field is one of those few sports where you will be able to compete at a junior varsity or varsity level until the championship season, and you are not going to sit a bench, and that’s something we should consider in promoting track and field” “Our bounding competitions would all be focused around 4 contacts” “The time it takes to exert maximal force is much longer than a foot contact in track and field” Show Notes Jumps Challenge Competitions and Speed Squat Progression About Mike Goss Education: University of Montevallo, BS Georgia State University, Masters degree, HPERD Work history: Teacher, Cobb County Public Schools, 1977-09 Physical Education instructor, 20 years; Health Education instructor, 12 years High school coach, USATF club 7 years; collegiate coach 2005-2012, Kennesaw State University, 6 years; Chattahoochee Technical College 1 year Currently coaching independently, “Flying Without Wings” Assistant Parkview HS, 7A state runner-up 2017 New Balance Nationals, triple jumper 3rd. Westlife - Flying Without Wings (Julian Marsh Mix)
Joanie Connell explains how “helicopter parenting”—hovering over and doing too many things for your kids, protecting them, and not letting them learn those skills themselves—is leading to problems when they get older and enter the workplace. In her executive coaching work, Dr. Connell often hears complaints about younger people coming into the workplace lacking some of the basic life skills that are necessary to succeed, like being independent, resilient, having good communication skills, and creativity. She offers solutions in her book, Flying Without a Helicopter.
Joanie Connell always liked making things and solving problems and was fascinated by the math and science behind how things work. With her electrical engineering degree from Harvard, Silicon Valley seemed like the perfect place to launch her career. After staying up into the wee hours of the morning debugging circuitry, for days on end, however, she had to face the hard truth…. She earned a doctorate in psychology from UC Berkeley and now specializes in leadership assessment, development and retention for all levels. She is also an executive coach and the author of "Flying Without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life."
Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.
Parents often have the best intentions. We want the best (and the most) for our kids. But when parents consistently over-function in their role by stepping in and doing the work for the kids, they may end up raising young adults who under-function. "We see in the workplace that these young people aren't as resilient, as adaptable, not as able to be independent or to communicate effectively because they haven't had the opportunity to learn those skills, " says psychologist Joanie Connell, author of Flying Without a Helicopter: How To Prepare Young People for Work and Life. Annie talks with Joanie about parenting with a lighter touch so your kids can learn to do the heavy work life requires of them. About Joanie Connell (@ConnellLessons) Joanie Connell, PhD., is an organizational consultant and leadership coach who specializes in maximizing leadership potential, and the founder and CEO of Flexible Work Solutions, Inc. What do parenthood and leadership have in common? Where did helicopter parenting come from and what has been the impact on the Millennial generation? What is the age of the Façade – and how is it impacting us? How are Millennials performing in the workplace and how should they be led professionally? In my conversation with Dr Joanie Connell we’ll tackle these questions and much more. This episode of The Team Guru Podcast resides in the intersection of parenthood and leadership. Dr Joanie Connell is the author of Flying Without a Helicopter – How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life. She is an organisational consultant and leadership coach – and a great podcast guest. Enjoy!
On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Dr. Joanie Connell, an author, organizational consultant, and leadership coach who helps people achieve their highest potential. Joanie works with companies to develop and retain top talent and improve their success and happiness in their careers. She is also the author of Flying Without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life. During the show, Jessica and Joanie discuss helicopter parenting, generational differences in the workplace, what makes a great leader, how to help employees be resilient, and how to find a career that excites you. Main Questions Asked: What are the pros and cons of helicopter parenting? Talk about millennial and generational challenges in the work place. Comment on how different generations figure out how to be happy in their career. Do you think the transition from employee to contractor jobs help people find a work/life balance? What does it take to be a successful leader? How do you teach employees to take on leadership roles? What can we do to help our employees be more resilient? How can people find a career that excites them? Key Lessons Learned: Helicopter Parents The choices you make as a parent are both good and bad, and it's a matter of weighing up the pros and cons of different methods. Helicopter parenting is ‘hovering' over the kids, watching everything they do, and doing things for them. The Lawnmower approach is paving the path ahead of the kids so they don't make mistakes or fall down. The consequence of helicopter parenting is that the kids never learn how to do things on their own and make their own mistakes. Generational Differences in the Work Place Millennials have different expectations and have been brought up where they have been protected and their self-esteem has been boosted. Baby boomers have a harder time working a flexible schedule and have the 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, 40 hour workweek ingrained in their belief system. What Makes a Great Leader Being a good leader is all about being flexible and thinking about the individual needs of each worker. Leadership comes down to having a vision and bringing followers along. If you don't have followers, then you're not a leader. A great leader has people skills to interact, motivate, and inspire. Helping Employees be Resilient When things go wrong, are you able to stay strong, positive, and bounce back? As managers, in order to help people build resilience, you have to let them fail. This is essentially the opposite of being a helicopter parent. Finding a Career that Excites You Figuring out what makes you happy takes a lot of self-awareness. Ask yourself if it's the content of the job, the environment, the company, having challenges, or helping people that makes you happy. Figure out what energizes you and lifts you up. What makes you happy doesn't necessarily have to be in a different job; it can be in your current job. The question shouldn't be, ‘what should I be doing?' but rather, ‘what makes me happy?'
