The new pedestrian bridge in Galway is set to have a new name! Droichead an Dóchais or Bridge of Hope has been chosen, and a naming ceremony will take place in a few weeks. It seems a bit bland, doesn't it? Do we need to have an honest question about how we name things here in Ireland? Newstalk's own Simon Tierney joins Kieran to discuss how we as a country name things. We highlight the significance of clear, concise, and consistent naming conventions in coding. Poor naming can lead to confusion, increased cognitive load, and avoidance of code. We talk about using domain-specific language in your code, the importance of consistency, the benefits of having a standard set of rules within a team, and the importance of good documentation. This episode was hosted and sponsored by Salto. I'm super excited about the topic this week which is The Power In Naming Things. This is an idea that might not come naturally for you, but let me tell ya, it is magical. To be honest, I may go a little overboard on this at times. I like to name everything from my houseplants (many of which are named after loved ones), to my guitar (Caliope, the Head Muse in Greek Mythology), to my toaster (Amos, just cuz I think it's a fun name). But the principle of naming things goes a lot deeper. Support the show (https://paypal.me/vibrantlifepodcast)
David Allen talks about the apparent, and the more subtle, power of naming things.
"There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things" - nie pierwszy raz wracam w podkaście do słów Phila Karltona, a zapewne także i nie ostatni. Technika wyjątkowo prosta w użyciu i jednocześnie zaskakująco skuteczna.
How do products you see advertised get their names? How does charity knitting figure into a story about that? Rita Mattia weaves it all together in this story about advertising, needlework, gender, and cats.

They then move into the topic of anti-semitism following Grime Artist, Wiley's recent tweet tirade, exploring the inconsistency in responses from society and culture. This leads into a discussion on whether artists should continue to be celebrated if their views, behaviours or actions are reputationally, morally or ethically questionable.

This week on Nice Games Club we talk about Naming Things and Rhythm Games! Stephen lays down a beat, Martha brings up fuzzy math and Mark uses every excuse to talk about Star Trek. Editor’s note: We found out recently that my co-hosts didn’t realize that when I edit episodes I don’t always pull an actual quote from the episode as its title? I’m a rebel and my humor cannot be constrained by such formalities. This week’s title is a great Irish music joke. Gan ainm in Irish means ‘no name’. Whenever someone asks you the name of a tune but you can’t remember, you just say with a cheeky grin- “oh, it’s called Gan Ainm” and they are none the wiser until they look up what it means. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day everyone! -Martha We mentioned the previous Train Jam episode: GDC 2017 Special (Part 1) Naming Things 0:17:47 Mark LaCroix Category Game Design Marketing Production Google Trends Rhythm Games 0:52:45 Martha Megarry Category Game Design Harminix's next music-making game puts your DJ skills to the test - Christine Fisher , Engadget Mark’s Rock Band experience episode: "She also cheats a lot." Hvorfor har navngiving fått posisjonen som en av de to vanskeligste problemene innen programmering? Hva er det egentlig med navn, ord og uttrykk som gjør at ting blir krystallklare eller forvises til obskuritet? I denne episoden reflekterer vi over navnets makt.

There's inherent power in naming things. Tonight I ran into a woman named India.... the name I almost gave to my child. This episode tells the story of naming a child, or anything for that matter, and the qualities you ascribe to it.

How is it you pronounce "yacht?" No-one knows for sure, but one thing we do know is that we're going to have them. One each. We haven't decided what they're going to look like but they're definitely going to be lovely. In this week's episode: - Naming Things, the Hardest Part of Games Design - Maintaining focus at the table without use of chains OR irons - Steven Seagal's Stealthy Seagulls - Locomotive Engine Team Redeemer Z - THORN, the theoretical game that is going to pay for those yachts And many more. We adore you. Gallivant around on our yachts; we have ping-pong, and 7-Up. - Grant and Chris
This episode kicks off with some Peanut M&M's being consumed. Hopefully it isn't to distracting from the stories, if it is please email at downhillfastpodcast@gmail.com (really any questions, comments, or feedback would be welcomed). Rheannon shares an update from the kill room, which to be clear involves a dog chewing on things and not actual murder. Tamara shares how she wishes she could be put in charge of naming things, but more specifically groups of animals. There has to be a better name than murder of crows. Another update on how snow is continuing to ruin the party. All these stories and more will surely go downhill fast.
The first podcast with studio audio, recorded during a Daily Creative livestream.
On this episode of Code Talk, Matt and Steven discuss intermediate values, naming things (methods and variables), and they reminisce about the "good ole days" when you could use underscores in PHP method and variable names (*shakes fist at the FIG*).
