“Hey everybody, welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks—the spot where we turn beats into‑beacons for anyone wrestling with the ups and downs of life. I'm your host, James Cox, and today we're thrilled to have a very special guest back on the show: Marq Electronica, the genre‑bending producer and vocalist who first joined us in episode 444.Since our last chat, Marq's sound has taken a wild ride. He's migrated from gritty trip‑hop and grime‑laden urban beats to a brighter, disco‑house vibe that still carries the weight of his introspective lyrics about insecurity, loss, and resilience. We'll hear him break down the story behind his new single “Be There,” a dance‑floor anthem that masks a deep craving for reassurance, and explore the darker, more personal tracks “Ether” and “Calling You,” which grapple with the loss of his father.Marq also opens up about the real‑life challenges that have shaped his journey: a fraught legal battle with his brother, a partner's serious illness, overwhelming caseloads at his day‑job, and the relentless pressure of finances. He'll reveal the turning point that finally let him laugh again—how community support, fresh gigs, and a stable job helped him step out of his shell and refocus on himself. We'll dive into his creative process, from hunting the perfect drum loop at 125 BPM to layering percussive textures that keep a track alive, and we'll hear the quirky “studio snack” confession that keeps his energy high. Plus, Mark shares what he's chasing beyond music—Tai Chi, storytelling, and a long‑overdue night of proper sleep.Stick around for his upcoming live gig in November—where he'll be spinning house tracks in the lounge of a Westlife concert arena—plus a reminder to check out his website markelectronica.com for new videos, merch, and the pre‑sale of his April 30th release. If you've ever felt stuck, unheard, or just need a rhythm to move through the dark, this episode is for you. So press play, breathe deep, and let the music do what words can't.

Clint, Meg and Dan celebrate The Edge rating #1 in Christchurch, and take a hilarious first call from Dave the truckie, who claims he can suck air into his bum and fart it back out maybe even inflate a balloon. They discuss Jeff Bezos’ tax comments, run New Music Friday, and give away $200 petrol to a Hamilton listener. New producer Brady debuts Producer Diaries, Ollie Sail previews Auckland FC’s grand final, and Dan’s final diary entry is read. The team tease a big mystery find from Dan’s mum’s attic for Monday, help a listener win Westlife tickets for her mum with stage three breast cancer, and award a $500 Woolworths voucher for an awkward “meditation” mix-up. It's been 25 years of Westlife. The globally renowned Irish boyband formed in 1998, splitting up in 2012 before reuniting once more in 2018. They have over three billion streams, 36 number one albums worldwide, and have sold 55 million records and more than six million concert tickets. And now they're coming to New Zealand as part of their 25th Anniversary World Tour – performing on our shores for the first time in 20 years. “This tour is shaping up to be the biggest tour we've ever done,” lead singer Shane Filan told Mike Hosking. Westlife's Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Shane Filan join Alison Curtis in studio on Weekend Breakfast for a brilliant chat — and plenty of laughs — as they mark 25 years together, from the early days to The Ultimate Collection and the memories fans still share with them. The lads reminisce about first meetings (including Grease in Sligo), those early auditions, and what it's like now that their kids are all grown up enough to be backstage — and even have their own group chat.Plus: Shane's advice for young musicians and parents, and Kian explains the now-viral moment he helped push a pregnant woman's car at Supermac's.Westlife's record breaking 3Arena run kicks off this September 10th. ‘25 - The Ultimate Collection' is out now.TodayFM's very special one-off live show 'Up Close and Personal With Westlife' takes place on The Dave Moore Show Friday 15th May. Tune in from 9am.
We kicked things off with a massive announcement that Westlife is officially heading to New Zealand next July. This sparked a heated debate about when the "birthday weekend" actually happens if your big day falls on a Wednesday. Meg is convinced you have to celebrate the weekend after because you aren't actually the new age yet, while the rest of us are just trying to figure out how to stretch the party for as long as possible. Things took a turn for the weird when Meg dug up an old article from when she was 25 where she claimed she was "sick" of Taylor Swift. She barely recognised her own voice or her face from back then, let alone her taste in music. Clint chimed in saying he still sees the same guy inside himself, even if that guy is prone to some pretty questionable life choices. Speaking of questionable choices, Clint finally shared the full story of his infamous wedding haka. He was the celebrant for the ceremony but ended up shirtless on the transport bus at the end of the night, performing for a group of Australians who had never seen a haka in person. The cringe was real as he described the sober bride watching from the front of the bus while he gave it his absolute all. To finish us off, we entered a bizarre competition over who produces the most saliva. Dan claims he has a "regular swallowing system," but the audio evidence of everyone trying to spit on command says otherwise. It got messy, it got brown (thanks to Meg’s coffee), and it’s definitely something you’ll have to hear to believe.

The foundations of modern American folk music, one of the biggest Canadian songs ever, and a possibly misplaced application of Christmas cheer. Seasons In The Sun, originally by The Kingston Trio, covered by Terry Jacks, and by Westlife. Outro music is M.T.A., also by The Kingston Trio, because we can't get enough of them — it's a family tradition.
Stray Kids or BlackPink? Spice Girls or Westlife? Music executives - like Simon Cowell - have been creating girl bands and boy bands for decades. And he's about to launch a brand new competition on Netflix to find “The Next Act”. When we talk about these groups, we generally mean good-looking young women or men who've been brought together, and who don't tend to write their own songs or play their own instruments. Their fans are stereotyped as being teenage girls and their mums. Is there any truth to the belief that girl bands make better music because they are held to higher standards? The BBC's music correspondent Mark Savage explains how pop bands have evolved over the decades. We look at the different pressures and stereotyping that girl and boy bands face and we hear from some of our BBC friends - do they prefer girl bands or boy bands and why?Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Video producer: Baldeep Chahal Producers: Julia Ross-Roy and Adam Chowdhury Editor: Verity Wilde

For a relatively small country, Ireland has had its fair share of mainstream international success in the music business over the years: U2, Van Morrison, Westlife, Thin Lizzy. These have all been familiar to radio listeners around the world for decades. But, an article in The Guardian on Friday suggested that we now have the world's best alternative music scene. Is that true?Dylan Murphy is a Music Journalist and Host of the ‘Mabfield' podcast. He joins Seán to discuss.
Welcome to the 21st Century!Or did you call it Y2K? And if so, can I ask WHY?Yes, pop fans and curators of variously compiled pop, we had survived the End of the Century. The millennium bug turned out to be nowhere near as life threatening as as we were told. No planes fell from the sky, no computer meltdowns and no return to the dark ages overnight. In fact the most terrifying thing about December 31st 1999 was the turgid TV schedules as we watched the Royal Family trying to join hands with Tony Blair, or worse - the cost of drinks and cloakroom queues in the nightclubs. So, as we entered the third millennium - with Cliff Richard still intact and fresh from his (nearly 4th) Festive chart topping prayer - how was the pop world faring? Despite the seeming lack of guitars (SO NINETIES), the charts were bursting with new, fresh and mostly young shiny talent! And Bryan Adams. And Tom Jones. And John Lennon.BUT, apart from these ‘legacy artistes', pop was back, Back, BACK. NOW 45 was here!Scandinavian superstar producers were serving up Britney, Backstreet, Aqua and, er, Lene for our delectation. Steps, S Club and Atomic Kitten were waving the Brit flag in their crop tops and combats (even H). Solo Spice was blossoming quicker than the viewing figures for Castaway (not hard) with Mel C and Geri leading the way. RnB and Garage was freshening up the charts. And of course EVERYONE was queuing in the airport terminals for another summer of dance and there is plenty of that on these two shiny discs. Bu t there is SO much more to this dazzling 45th volume of variously compiled pop. And taking us through it is GENUINE CONTRIBUTOR to the album - electronic producer and musician John Matthews aka Ricardo Autobahn aka the Cuban Boys! Yes, the Hamster Dance song as featured here!Join us as we climb aboard our futuristic Y2K hoverboards and not only revisit NOW45, discover the full story of how The Cuban Boys topped John Peel's Festive Top 50 and almost toppled the might Cliff and Westlife in the final Official Chart of the millennium. All from their bedroom. You couldn't make it up!All of this and Daphne and Celeste! Ooh (and quite literally) Stick You! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome to a special episode of Encore where we take a look at some of the iHeartRadio team’s favourite Canadian songs that you may have forgotten about. We’re calling it CanConCore… get it? This week we have the story of B4-4’s “Get Down”! Remember the year 2000? If we weren’t worried about Y2K and the millennium bug bringing on the collapse of society we were likely just sitting in our rooms listening to all of the great boy bands that were topping the charts. Because 2000 was the year boy bands reigned supreme. *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, Westlife, O-Town… They were everywhere. And while it’s fair to say that most boy bands came from either the United States or the United Kingdom, I’d like to think Canada had a very memorable boy band of its own. This is the story of B4-4's 'Get Down' with newly unearthed footage from the band themselves. Written by Cam Lindsay for iHeartRadio.

Today we enter the world of Strictly Come Dancing. The show is a phenomenon of British television, and our guest is the longest serving professional dancer on the series – the sparky Venezuelan-American dancer Karen Hauer. Karen spoke to us just before she learned her partner for the 2025 series would be the Team GB sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (aka Nitro from Gladiators) – but Karen tells us how she forges a partnership with a non-dancing celebrity, and about the pressures and pleasures of the iconic show. Karen Hauer is Strictly Come Dancing's longest standing professional dancer, starring in the show since 2012. Her partners have included Westlife's Nicky Byrne, The ‘Hairy Biker' Dave Myers, Jeremy Vine, Will Young, Jayde Adams and Paul Merson. Previously, she was crowned 2008 World Mambo Champion, was a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance USA, and principal female dancer in the original Broadway cast of Burn The Floor and subsequent world tours. With Gorka Marquez, she created the successful shows Firedance and Speakeasy, on which she was Associate Choreographer and Associate Creative Producer. This week's guest is absolutely flying, but it's been one hell of a ride getting here. Mark Mehigan is a comedian, author, podcaster, and former BBC social media guru, with a backstory that reads like six lifetimes packed into one. From writing songs with Westlife's Mark Feehily to late-night benders in London, Mark's journey has been anything but dull. These days, he hosts Mark Mehigan's Weekly Roast, one of Ireland's top comedy podcasts. But behind the laughs is a deeply honest story of addiction, anxiety, ADHD, and the kind of quiet desperation that can hide behind a smile. We talk about how his Monday-night wine habit spiraled, why hitting rock bottom might be the best thing that ever happened to him, and what he calls “the silence between the ears.”Mark's chasing what so many of us are - peace of mind. In this funny, vulnerable, and no-nonsense conversation, we explore the messy path to clarity, recovery, and self-acceptance - with plenty of laughs along the way.If you're new to the series, why not take the time to go back and catch up on the wonderful interviews that you may have missed!Visit www.dermotwhelan.com for more information and don't forget my new book Busy and Wrecked is out now!
