Send us a textHello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! Happy New Year everyone. This is the first episode for our 2025 season!Today I want to introduce Emma Bentzen Koehler. Emma Bentzen Koehler, was an entrepreneur and president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1858 to her parents, Ulrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bentzen and Helene Henriette Sophie (Garrels) Bentzen. Her parents emigrated from Hanover Germany to St. Louis during the late 1830s. Her mother died in 1860 from heart disease at the age of 48. Her father would go on to marry Marianna Bertha Wiebe in 1862. During her childhood in St. Louis, she and her siblings participated in German-American cultural events and associations, including the turnverein movement. A Turnverein is a gymnastic or athletic club that originated in Germany in 1811. The term comes from the German words turnen, which means "to practice gymnastics," and Verein, which means "club, union". Her father would pass away in 1882 at the age of 76. Emma's early years in the U.S. were shaped by her immigrant experience, learning the value of hard work, cultural adaptation, and business acumen.Resourceshttps://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/san-antonio-brewery-icon-otto-koehler-is-murdered-by-nurse-back-in-1914https://thehotelemma.com/overview/emmas-story/https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/koehler-emma-bentzenhttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/140482234/emma-koehlerhttps://memoriesofsanantonio.com/2023/01/26/the-trial-of-the-century-and-the-story-of-the-three-emmas/All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/

Today I want to tell you about a lesser known Lady Pink named Elizabeth H Baker. It is not known when Elizabeth H. Baker was born the exact date and location of her birth remain uncertain. Send us a textHello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! This is part 3 of our Pink Ladies series. Mary Louvestre was an African-American Union spy in Norfolk, Virginia, during the United States Civil War. She delivered details of plans for the conversion of the wrecked USS Merrimack to an ironclad that would be named the CSS Virginia and which represented a great advance in Confederate naval capabilities. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!The history of diving girls is a fascinating chapter in the world of entertainment and athleticism, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Diving girls, also known as "high divers" or "swan divers," were performers who specialized in diving from great heights into small bodies of water, often while riding horses or performing acrobatics. The practice gained popularity in the context of Wild West shows and traveling circuses in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These shows, which featured a blend of Western-themed entertainment, stunt performances, and feats of skill, captivated audiences across the country. Diving girls added an element of daring and spectacle to these shows, often performing alongside cowboys, sharpshooters, and other skilled performers.Resources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonora_Webster_Carverhttps://www.thespectrum.com/story/sports/mesquite/2021/04/18/eighth-pole-sonora-webster-carver-fearless-horse-diving-girl/7281572002/https://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/sonora-webster-carver-daredevil-horse-diver-gygmrx/15128/https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7907392/sonora_evelyn-carverhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diving_horseSay What:https://www.huffpost.com/entry/bc-eu-sweden-shipwreck-champagne_n_66b39148e4b042ee2ccfb989All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/

*****TRIGGER WARNING*****Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with MomToday we are going to discuss a phenomenon that occurred in the 19th century commonly referred to as “Fasting Girls”. Please note this episode makes reference to eating disorders and mental illness, if these topics are triggering please feel free to skip this episode. All my resources can be found in the show notes. The term "fasting girls" refers to a phenomenon observed primarily in the 19th century where young girls or women claimed to be able to survive for long periods without eating. These cases garnered significant attention from both medical professionals and the public, often sparking debates about the nature of human physiology, spirituality, and social dynamics.Several famous cases emerged during this time, such as that of Sarah Jacob in Wales, who claimed not to have eaten for several years. Another well-known case was that of Mollie Fancher, also known as the "Brooklyn Enigma," who claimed to have gone without food for extended periods.Resources: https://www.newspapers.com/image/114899416/?match=1&terms=fasting%20girlshttps://www.welshlegalhistory.org/research-jacobs-case.phphttps://biography.wales/article/s-JACO-SAR-1857https://blpress.org/books/the-welsh-fasting-girl/#:~:text=Twelve%2Dyear%2Dold%20Sarah%20Jacob,%2C%20scientific%2C%20and%20political%20factions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting_girlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Moore_(impostor)National Eating Disorders Association: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/Say What?!: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/giraffe-grabs-texas-toddler-safari_n_666295e4e4b091105f3a395bAll the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/Promo Code: BREAKFAST

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!Today I want to tell you about Gustav Klimt, and the story of his stolen art. Gustav was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent figures in the Vienna Secession movement. Born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, near Vienna, Austria, Gustav demonstrated artistic talent from a young age. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he was trained in architectural painting and decorative arts. One of Gustav's most famous paintings, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," was at the center of one of the most notable art thefts and restitution cases in history. The Portrait is an oil painting on canvas, with gold leaf. The painting was commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a wealthy industrialist and Adele Bloch-Bauer's husband; the painting was completed sometime in 1907.During World War II, when Austria was occupied by Nazi Germany, the painting, along with other valuable artworks, was seized from the Bloch-Bauer family by the Nazis. After the war, the painting ended up in the possession of the Austrian government. It was displayed in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna for many years.Resources:https://www.neuegalerie.org/collection/artist-profiles/gustav-klimthttps://www.britannica.com/biography/Gustav-Klimthttps://www.gustav-klimt.com/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Klimthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait_of_Adele_Bloch-Bauer_Ihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adele_Bloch-Bauerhttps://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/bloch-bauer-adelehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Altmannhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_in_Gold_(film)Say What?!:https://www.npr.org/2024/05/03/1248880788/wally-alligator-missing-georgiaAll the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/Promo Code: BREAKFAST

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! This is the 112 anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. I won't bore you with the story of the Titanic but I do want to give a brief summary of the Titanic story just in case there are some out there that have been living under a rock their whole life- the luxury liner RMS Titanic, launched on May 31, 1911, and set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton en route to New York City on April 10, 1912, with 2,240 passengers and crew on board. On April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, Titanic broke apart and sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking with it the lives of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. On board were some of the world's richest people, JP Morgan, John Jacob Astor IV, Margaret Brown and Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy's, and his wife, Ida just to name a few. I will not be telling you about them, instead I wanted to highlight a party of 4 women traveling together in cabins B-3, B-5 and E-10. These women would survive on lifeboat 2.Resources:https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Allenhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-allen.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Emilie_Kreuchenhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/emilie-kreuchen.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Roberthttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-robert.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Georgette_Alexandra_Madillhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/georgette-madill.htmlhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic/lifeboats/lifeboat-2/All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/Promo Code: BREAKFAST

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! This episode contains content related to domestic abuse as both physical and sexual assault. Some may find this triggering, please listen at your own risk.On March 9, 1977 Francine Hughes stood outside her Michigan home, watching it burn. Inside was her abusive husband, Mickey. Earlier that night, he had beaten and raped her for the last time. She stood watching the fire, then turned and entered the car where three of her children cowered in fear. Then she drove herself to authorities and turned herself in. Little did she know that in a few short years there would be a book and movie about this night. A book would be released in 1980 and a made for TV movie would later be released in 1984.Resources:https://criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com/types-of-crime/domestic-violence/stockholm-syndrome-in-battered-women/https://people.com/archive/cover-story-a-violent-death-a-haunted-life-vol-22-no-15/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Burning_Bedhttps://criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com/types-of-crime/domestic-violence/stockholm-syndrome-in-battered-women/Articles found:https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-in-part-francine/142162075/https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-arraignme/142160227/https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-confessio/142160692/https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-confessio/142160692/https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-trial-ca/142164468/https://www.newspapers.com/article/lansing-state-journal-francine-trail-and/142163027/Say What?! :https://www.npr.org/2024/02/12/1230711926/mummified-monkeys-boston-airport-bushmeatAll the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/Promo Code: BREAKFAST

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! We are going to conclude our Christmas series. Today's Christmas story takes place in New York City 1897. I found this story when I watched the 2009 movie on Netflix. I'm sure some of our listeners have seen the movie's thumbnail while surfing Netflix for a Christmas movie but may not know it was based on a true story.Laura Virginia O'Hanlon was born on July 20, 1889, in New York City, to Philip F. O'Hanlon, a surgeon who also worked as a coroner for the New York City Police Department, and Laura Lincoln O'Hanlon. In 1897, Virginia asked her father whether Santa Claus existed. His answer did not convince her, and she decided to pose the question to the New York newspaper The Sun. Sources conflict over whether her father suggested writing the letter or she elected to on her own. In her letter, Virginia wrote that her father had told her, "If you see it in The Sun it's so." Virginia later told The Sun that her father thought the newspaper would be "too busy" to respond to her question and had said, "Write if you want to," but not to be disappointed if she did not get a response. Welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!We are continuing our Christmas series. Today's Christmas ghost story comes from the Victorian Era, 1868 to be exact. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!Since we are in the holiday season, for the month of December, I thought we would do something different and go off script. Instead of talking about historical true crime or discussing people and events we find interesting, for our December episodes I would like to talk about old forgotten traditions. Today I want to read a Christmas ghost story, but before I read the ghost story I would like to give you a brief explanation of why we have Christmas ghost stories. There are several Christmas ghost stories from Victorian times, one such story is “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. For this episode I will not be reading that story but another ghostly story, my resources and a link to the Christmas story can be found in the show notes. The English Victorians celebrated Christmas a little differently than we do today. In Victorian England, Christmas was an opportunity to exchange gruesome stories of ghosts, evil spirits, and people gone mad.According to Sara Cleto, an expert in folklore who spoke with History.com, Victorian-era ghost stories were ideal for an England night that was swathed in darkness. At night, with candles or a fire as the only light source, the atmosphere was perfect for a spooky story to kill time on a long winter's night. Part of the incentive to tell ghost stories was a belief that spirits had license for mischief on Christmas Eve—a kind of free play for ghosts before they were said to restrain themselves on the holy day to follow. One such story is Smee (A Christmas Ghost Story) by AM Burrage, however this story was written in the Edwardian era but does pull from the preceding Victorian time period.Resources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._M._Burrage#Collectionshttps://www.deadtreepublishing.com/pages/a-m-burragehttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/653565/ghost-stories-victorian-christmas-traditionhttps://anilbalan.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/smee-by-am-burrage-_-scary-for-kids.pdfAll the things: Music: "A Sip of Coffee to Relieve Stress" by Katzen TupasLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today I want to tell you about the Teapot Dome Scandal. The Teapot Dome Scandal was a major political scandal in the United States during the 1920s. It centered around the secret leasing of federal oil reserves, including the Teapot Dome oil field in Wyoming, and two other fields in California, to private oil companies without competitive bidding. The scandal was a significant example of government corruption and corporate influence on the U.S. government. The scandal came to light when investigative journalists and political opponents exposed the corrupt dealings.cranberry sauceIngredients12 ounces cranberries (rinsed and dried)1 cup white sugar1 cup fresh squeezed orange juiceDirections: Dissolve sugar in the orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cranberries and cook until they start to pop, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and place sauce in a bowl. It will thicken as it cools. You can even make this a day ahead and place in the fridge after it has come to room temperature. Extra step: from here you can add orange zest to the top to make it more festive.Resources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teapot_Dome_scandalhttps://www.britannica.com/money/topic/Teapot-Dome-Scandalhttps://www.crf-usa.org/bill-of-rights-in-action/bria-24-4-the-teapot-dome-scandal.htmlhttps://untoldhistory.org/the-teapot-dome-scandal-explained/https://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/teapot-dome-scandalhttps://www.history.com/topics/roaring-twenties/teapot-dome-scandal#paying-off-the-pressAll the things: Music: "A Sip of Coffee to Relieve Stress" by Katzen TupasLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/
Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today we talk about Bessie Coleman. Bessie Coleman was a pioneering African American aviator. She was born on January 26, 1892, in Texas. Bessie Coleman faced racial and gender discrimination but was determined to become a pilot. She moved to France to pursue her dream since flight schools in the United States wouldn't admit her due to her race and gender. Her legacy continues as an inspiration to aspiring aviators and as a symbol of breaking barriers in aviation history. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today discuss the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots. These riots took place from June 3 to June 8, 1943, primarily between American servicemen, who were predominantly white, and young Mexican American and Mexican immigrant men, who were often seen wearing distinctive "zoot suits." The zoot suit was a flamboyant style of clothing characterized by oversized suits with high-waisted, pegged trousers and long jackets. The riots were fueled by social tensions, wartime anxiety, and racial prejudice. Many members of the U.S. military stationed in Los Angeles viewed the zoot suit as a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity, associating it with Mexican American youth gangs.Today I want to shout out Tapanga, she is listening from the DFW area. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today we discuss the murder on August 15, 1914 at The Frank Lloyd Wright Mansion, also known as The Taliesin Massacre. Taliesin is a town in Wisconsin. Frank Lloyd Wright was an influential American architect who left an indelible mark on the world of architecture in the 20th century. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright's career was marked by innovation and experimentation. He pioneered the use of new materials and construction techniques, such as the cantilevered structure seen in Fallingwater, a house he designed in Pennsylvania that seems to float over a waterfall. He also popularized the use of open floor plans and introduced the concept of the "open plan" in residential architecture. Hello everyone and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!Today I want to tell you about a very confusing story. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today I want to tell you about Anna Moore, she was the first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island, New York. For those of you that do not know or remember, Ellis Island is a federally owned island in New York Harbor, situated within the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York, that was the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law. Today, it is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is accessible to the public only by ferry. The north side of the island is the site of the main building, now a national museum of immigration. The south side of the island, including the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, is open to the public only through guided tours.Resources:https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/16193022/annie-moorehttps://www.cnn.com/2023/03/17/us/irish-history-ellis-island-annie-moore-cec/index.htmlhttps://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/annie-moore-first-immigrant-ellis-islandhttps://www.statueofliberty.org/discover/famous-passengers/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_American_Cultural_Institutehttps://www.history.com/news/remembering-annie-moore-ellis-islands-first-immigranthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulton_Fish_Markethttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guion_Linehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellis_Islandhttps://www.statueofliberty.org/ellis-island/overview-history/“Say What?”: https://apnews.com/article/california-beach-ancient-mastodon-tooth-cfcd32d4b9008523d111714a84dea604Credits:Music: "A Sip of Coffee to Relieve Stress" by Katzen TupasLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112 https://twitter.com/breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.com
