This episode is a fan favorite that was originally published as Episode 476. We hope that you have a happy and safe holiday! When musician Bobby Mackey opened Bobby Mackey's Music World in 1978, he had hoped for nothing more than to open a small nightclub where audiences could enjoy the traditional country music he had devoted his life to for decades. Yet before the club was even opened, it was apparent to Bobby, his wife Janet, and manager Carl that whatever the new night club was going to be, it would be anything but normal. In the decades since it opened, Bobby Mackey's Music World has gained a reputation, not just as a one of Kentucky's enduring country western clubs, but as one of America's supposedly most haunted locations. Indeed, Bobby Mackey's is said to be the home of several spirits whose lives revolved around, and in some cases ended on the property, including the ghosts of a lovesick showgirl, a headless pregnant woman, and the two Satan-worshipping men who took her head.Thank you to the glorious David White for research assistance :)ReferencesAssociated Press. 1978. But does history bear out the disdain we have for him? (Does the Marquis de Sade Deserve The Hate?) *** Connie Converse wrote and performed trailblazing music in the 1950s, but one day in 1974, she drove off looking for a fresh start — and was never seen again. (The Strange Disappearance of Singer-Songwriter Connie Converse) *** Jack Pyle was a hermit and a recluse, living in a tiny shack – selling the fish he caught out of the river to supplement his income. But that doesn't mean he didn't have money, which might've been the reason someone killed him. (Death of a Miser) *** Napoleon Bonaparte is known as one of the greatest military commanders in history, and his battles and ambitions changed the shape of Western Europe. But it seems that the only foe that could best this great man was small and fluffy. (Napoleon Versus The Bunnies) *** For centuries, bizarre physical conditions, strange health-based occurrences, and questionable treatments have gained widespread attention, only to be exposed as frauds. We'll look at some of the strangest! (Medical Hoaxes) *** In 1896, 22-year-old schoolteacher Pearl Bryan was found dead. But after her killers were found, tried, and hanged, her story continued to fascinate the public even to the point of having folk songs sung about her. But it wasn't her beauty that inspired the songwriters so much as it was that she was found without her head. This classic Kinda Murdery episode originally aired on April 13, 2023. On February 1st, 1893, an African-American teen named John Howling, walking to work in the morning, spotted a young girl, lying in the grass on the side of the road to Fort Thomas Kentucky. At first, John thought she might be sleeping, or worse, taken by the late-winter cold and freezing (or already frozen.) Howling approached and laid a hand gently on the girls shoulder to awaken her. Suddenly, Howling was howling. He let out a blood curdling scream. The girl was headless. John didn't know it yet, but he had discovered the body of beloved Greencastle, Indiana socialite, Pearl Bryan. She was obviously dead, but why had the killer decapitated her, and where was Pearl's head now? The story of what happened to Pearl Bryan is horrifying and frightening. The scandalous particulars of the events that led to her murder captivated the attention of the U.S. in the late 1800s, but Pearl gets sort of lost in the shuffle. 1978. It was a chilly February morning in 1896 when Johnny Hewling, a young farm worker, made a grisly discovery on the land of his employer, John Locke, near Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. Hewling had stumbled upon the remains of a woman who had been decapitated, and her head was nowhere to be found. The police were called in to investigate, and they soon discovered the identity of the victim, a young woman named Pearl Bryan. Over the following year, Pearl's murder and the subsequent trial of her killers captivated the nation's media-- a story that continues to be told to this very day. A farmhand is picking apples on a misty morning in 1896 when he stumbles across the figure of a woman. Or at least part of one. Splayed in the dewy grass of the Kentucky Highlands is the headless body of Pearl Bryan. How she came to be there, miles and miles from her home in Indiana, is anyone's guess. Hosted on Acast. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an American classic that often resurfaces around Halloween. While it is considered one of America's first ghost stories, Washington Irving didn't invent the idea of a headless rider. Unsurprisingly, this character has sinister origins that can be traced all the way back to The Middle Ages. Speaking of headless beings, we also discuss the gruesome murder of Pearl Bryan and how eerily similar her story is to the legend. Here's a story ghost hunters tell about that well. On the last cold day of January, 1896, a 22-year-old music student from rural Indiana stepped off the train in Cincinnati. Her name was Pearl Bryan. She'd arrived in Ohio five months pregnant, wearing nice clothing and custom-crafted shoes. The two men who met her at the station, her lover Scott Jackson and his roommate Alonzo Walling, had brought her to Ohio for the purposes of arranging an abortion.
Alex covers the murder of Pearl Bryan. A sunday school teacher that was going to visit a friend but was found decapitated in a rivene in the mountains of Kentucky. A wanna be dentist was apprehended for the murder. Turns out he's a POS. No shocker there! Kaci covers H.H. Holmes… ‘nuff said on that.. Definitely not an Air BNB I would go to. His body was buried in concrete in 1896 and was exumed in 2017 only to be found in nearly prestine condition. Whoa.
For this week's episode I'm doing what is known as "the most haunted night club in America,” Bobby Mackey's Music World in Wilder, Kentucky. I feel like this one is a two for one special. Not only is there a tale of love gone wrong that there are two! One is the unfortunate story of Pearl Bryan, whose story rivaled the murder of Lizzie Borden's parents in media attention which happened only four years earlier and competed for the dubious distinction of “Crime of the Century.” The second story is that of Johanna and her rose perfume and how her story transcends time. So lets get into shall we? Grab yourself a cup of tea, make sure the doors are locked and the sage is close by. I have a story to tell you. Thank you to everyone out there listening today. I know this one was a bit of a dark one and kinda rough to get through so thank you to everybody that hung on. When a headless woman's remains were discovered near Cincinnati in 1896, police had a problem. Long before DNA and fingerprinting, the lack of a head made it tough to identify the victim. Thanks to a sharp-eyed shoemaker, a new kind of detective work was born: The woman was ID'd thanks to a pair of distinctive shoes on the corpse's feet. Pearl Bryan was a 22-year-old Indiana woman who'd recently learned she was pregnant. Her lover, a Cincinnati man named Scott Jackson, suggested she come to town so they could figure out their next steps. After police discovered the "who," they then had to piece together the "how." "Crimes of the Centuries (https://www.centuriespod.com/) " is a new podcast from the Obsessed Network (https://www.obsessednetwork.com/) exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. AN EYE FOR AN EYE -- A special edition of Yesterday’s News exploring the criminal justice system at its most extreme: Inflicting the Death Penalty... A Foul Deed In Ft. Thomas In celebration of our 200th episode, I’m going to share one of my favorite local stories. The murder itself took place a state over, but one of the convicted murderers lived for a time in my hometown, and the sad story of Pearl Bryan is well-known in the three states involved, with many dubious legends and rumors abounding, and it’s said that her spirit haunts a Northern Kentucky nightclub. But what I really like about this story is that it has one of the most remarkable descriptions of an execution that I’ve come across. In February of 1896, a little boy discovered a woman's headless body in a farmer's field in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. No one knew who she was, or what had happened. Newspapers carried headlines like "Hunt for the Head" and "Headless Horror." Quickly, the crime scene became a tourist attraction and visitors traveled from all over to collect bloody souvenirs. The gruesome details were adapted into a popular song that's been recorded dozens of times. We talk with folklorist Sarah Bryan about the true story behind the murder ballad, and the band Elephant Micah performs an original arrangement. Download Elephant Micah’s “Pearl Bryan” on iTunes or Bandcamp. Read their guide, “How to Bring a Murder Ballad Back to Life” here. America's Most Haunted Radio with host Eric Olsen was live last night at 8pE with guest Shannon Bradley Byers on the IPBN radio network. Listen to the podcast right here!Shannon Bradley Byers, the "Paranormal Genealogist," is a paranormal investigator and educator who infuses paranormal investigation with genealogical and historical research, and lectures in the Southeast on how to blend them into a seamless whole. She teaches para-enthusiasts and professionals that the "TV show history" of a location is not always correct and that it is critical for them to do their own research and not take legends at face value.Using examples such as Lavinia Fisher at the Old Charleston Jail, and Pearl Bryan at Bobby Mackey's Music World, Shannon shows how para-entertainment has skewed history and how incorrect the "facts" they supply to their audience and paying paranormal investigators sometimes are, and how incorrect facts can hinder a paranormal investigation.Byers also uses historic metro Atlanta locations to demonstrate how even the most basic facts such as the location of a given event aren't always correct. As former assistant director and department chair for the National Paranormal Society, she has authored many educational articles that are used as training material for members. In 2013 the team she co-founded with her husband in 2003, Timeless Paranormal, was featured in the A DAY TRIP documentary shown on EATV.
