Harry Allen is executive VP for financial excellence and CFO at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. In this episode, Allen joins our host Donna Schiele to talk about his journey from banking to higher education, the importance of relationships and service in leadership, and his vision for the future of finance in higher ed. "I view my role in the many roles that I've had in my career. I'm mostly one that is empowering others and serving as the catalyst," Allen says. He emphasizes the importance of listening, learning and collaborating to find mutually beneficial solutions. "And so I show up to tables to listen and learn. And I think when you spend time doing that first, you get a true understanding of what the person's goals and motivations are versus coming to the table ready to say no to something." Allen goes on to talk about his excitement for the future, seeing AI not as a threat but as a tool to enhance human creativity and innovation. He advises emerging leaders in higher ed to raise their hand for special projects, serve their community, and stretch outside their comfort zone to gain new skills. As a young adult Burt Bacharach used fake IDs to get into 52nd Street jazz clubs to have his mind blown away by heroes of the bebop revolution like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Those early impressions could not but leave a mark in his sophisticated pop songs, seeds that would later make those very same songs blossom in the hands of jazz players, going full circle. As a composer and songwriter he had a remarkable gift for combining simplicity and complexity, the African roots of jazz R&B and soul with the European classical influences of French impressionism. The result were the unforgettable melodies he was admired for, many of which are featured in this playlist, as interpreted by a wide ranging of progressive musicians. The playlist features Larry Goldings, Harry Allen; Toots Thielemans; Gabor Szabo; Isaac Hayes; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Charles Lloyd; Bill Frisell; Dionne Farris, Charlie Hunter; Steve Kuhn; Marie Mcauliffe; Benjamin Koppel. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/17011710/Mondo-Jazz (from "The Look of Love" onward). Happy listening!
Anthony Pinn is joined by legendary hip hop activist and journalist HARRY ALLEN for a wide-ranging discussion of hip hop music and culture—past, present, and future.
By the 1980s, hip-hop artists were beginning to expand the party culture of hip-hop's early years and think about what they wanted to say with their music. Faced with a city wrecked by economic abandonment and neglect, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five released “The Message” in 1982, calling out the conditions head-on: “rats in the front room, roaches in the back, junkies in the alley with a baseball bat.” And to take control of this environment of neglect, young artists began shaping their environment through dance, fashion, and graffiti. But with the growth in the culture came a crackdown on Black America: in the form of “broken windows” policing, and then a ramped up War on Drugs. And as some members of the hip-hop counterculture became targets of police harassment, they began to fight the power with work that was bold and demanding..In the second episode of “Street Disciples,” Trymaine Lee hears from: Melle Mel of the Furious Five, fashion designer Dapper Dan, graffiti artist Cey Adams, sociologist Tricia Rose, historian Mark Anthony Neal, and hip-hop activist Harry Allen. To hear his work is more than just listening to music, it's an experience. It's why your host Paul E. Leslie asked him to be the guest for this anniversary transmission. Jazz guitarist, singer and our past guest John Pizzarelli said this about him: “Harry Allen's playing is nothing less than perfect.” The late jazz critic and lyricist Gene Lees wrote this: “Stan Getz was once asked his idea of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His answer was, ‘My technique, Al Cohn's ideas, and Zoot's time.' The fulfillment of that ideal may well be embodied in... Harry Allen.” One more thing, before we get to the Harry Allen interview, you should know that The Paul Leslie Hour is made possible by viewers and listeners like you. Please help keep this going. Harry Allen is the Co-founder and Chief Relationship Officer of Studio Bank. With a purpose of "empowering creators", Studio Bank launched in June 2018 to become the first new, locally-headquartered bank in Nashville since 2008 and is one of the City's fastest growing companies. Listen in! Key Highlights: [00:01 - 19:48] When Business and Service Combine, Magic Happens Harry's career has focused on combining his financial knowledge and expertise with service to business owners. How centralized banking processes can be leads to undeserving the communities and this leads to consumers proving a preference for local banks. Studio Bank employs a vertical strategy in all of the sectors that make up Nashville's economy, including music, arts and entertainment, nonprofit and education banking, and professional services. .[19:49 - 29:40] New Bank Launches in Nashville to Fill the Void Left by Exits Harry discusses how Nashville was able to benefit from the growth of the pandemic by providing services such as financial assistance and capital raising. Nashville is growing and has reached a point where it is becoming an important part of the regional economy. There are many challenges that Nashville faces, including gentrification and disparities in education. [29:41 - 32:37] Striking the Balance to be Involved Holistically How Harry manages to juggle his time between work, family, and community involvement - identify the non negotiables and set boundaries. Harry offers advice for people who want to get involved in their community but feel overwhelmed or don't have the time. [32:38 - 34:01] Closing Segment Reach out and learn more about how to serve the community! Key Quotes: “Access to capital is no different from the disparity in health outcomes and education… Community banks are making decisions at the community level, by credit committees that are made up of local citizens, and we're approving loans for neighbors. And so when, you know, minority business owner applies at the Bank of America, you know, this is not a criticism of large banks, but those processes are centralized. And so the underwriting takes place way outside of the community. And they're just looking at the the numbers on the application, which doesn't always tell the complete story.” - Harry Allen “Have a vision for the type of life you want to lead, and identify and define the non negotiables as early as possible.” - Harry Allen Connect with Harry: Email: harry.allen@studiobank.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/harryallen/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/harryallen/) Website: https://www.studiobank.com/ (https://www.studiobank.com/) Connect with me onhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-c-adams/ ( LinkedIn)! What comes to your mind when you see the color yellow? One of your top 5 answers is “Taxi”, right? And even though not all taxis are yellow around the world, this color is strongly associated with the industry. But why is that? The first taxis in the U.S. weren't yellow. In 1907, businessman Harry Allen bought red and green vehicles in France and transported them to New York. However, he had to face some competition, since a lot of other cab-companies popped up. And their owners painted the vehicles in different colors – black, brown, white, checkered – so that each company had a signature color. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mr. Cole.

Meet Harry Allen, the sporty gentleman who scandalized Seattle by wooing ladies, biting cops, and making sure to give his side of the story to the press. Harry left an extraordinary legacy in the public record: He was a transgender man who talked directly to newspapers about his gender identity. But was he really the incorrigible hoodlum the papers made him out to be, or was he forced to the margins of society by police harassment? Content notes: There is one transphobic quote at the beginning of the article, when we discuss the incorrect claims about transgender history in Abigail Shrier's book. For all other quotes used in this episode, I've trimmed around names and pronouns to avoid misgendering Harry on air. They have worked together all over Chicago and in venues throughout the country, as well as tours of Europe and Canada. Since 2009, Andy has co-led a two-guitar quartet with renowned guitarist Howard Alden. In 2016, mandolinist Don Stiernberg released a CD titled “Good Numbers” featuring Andy on acoustic archtop guitar. Andy has collaborated on four CDs with Petra van Nuis, the most recent being their 2017 duet release “Lessons Lyrical." Andy had the good fortune to learn directly from several guitar masters, including Cal Collins, Ted Greene, and Howard Alden. His most important mentor was the late Kenny Poole, who called Andy his protégé. About Petra Petra van Nuis (pronounced Pay-tra van Nouse) is a Chicago-based jazz vocalist who has been described in Downbeat Magazine as having "a light, gorgeous, and fairly delicate voice...a gift for melody and plenty of rhythmic confidence." A Chicagoan since 2003, Petra sings at all the finest jazz venues in town including the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill, Andy's Jazz Club, Winter's, Fitzgerald's, the City Winery, and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs has presented Petra's groups at the Chicago Cultural Center and Chicago Summer Dance. The Jazz Institute of Chicago has featured Petra's Recession Seven band at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Jazz City. Petra has been interviewed and her music featured on Chicago's WGN for Rick Kogan's "After Hours" show and on WBEZ's "Morning Shift" with Tony Sarabia. Outside of Chicago, Petra plays at jazz festivals such as the Cleveland Classic Jazz Party, the Roswell Jazz Festival and Joe Boughton's Chautauqua Jazz Party with such renowned musicians as Dan Barrett, Nicki Parrott, Ken Peplowski, John Di Martino, Dan Block, Scott Robinson, Frank Tate, Hal Smith, Rossano Sportiello, and Duke Heitger. Petra's latest project, Because We're Night People, is a live recording of night-themed standards which was awarded 4 stars by DownBeat Magazine and included in their "Top Rated Albums of 2019" listing. Revered Chicago pianist Dennis Luxion blends his signature impressionistic harmony with Petra's lush vocals. This CD was re-issued in Japan on the Japanese label Muzak in October 2018 and was used as in-flight music on All Nippon Airways (Japan's largest airline) in January/February 2019. Germany's Jazzpodium Magazine hails Petra's seventeen year musical collaboration with her husband, guitarist Andy Brown, as "a magical musical dialogue, which can only partially be described as blind understanding." Petra and Andy's romantic style has been enjoyed in intimate club settings around the country including Shanghai Jazz (Madison, NJ), the Kerrytown Concert House (Ann Arbor, MI), Night Town (Cleveland,OH), the Saugatuck Center for the Arts (Saugatuck, MI), and the Blue Wisp Jazz Club (Cincinnati, OH). Several European tours have brought the duo to Germany (Traditional Jazz Hall Stuttgart, Jazzhaus Heidelberg, Mampf Frankfurt, Le Pirate, Jazz Club Neustadt, Jazz Club 77, Musikhaus Birlkehof) to the Netherland's (Gorinchem Jazz Festival, Culuurschip Thor, Jazz Hall 72, Stichting Jazz Zevenbergen) and to Belgium (Jazz Cafe Hopper). With the re-release of the duo's 2017 CD Lessons Lyrical and their 2009 CD Far Away Places on Japan's Muzak label, Petra and Andy continue to spread their swinging sounds far and wide. Petra and Andy often augment their duo with bass and drums forming the Petra van Nuis/ Andy Brown Quartet. In addition to Chicago performances, the quartet frequently tours the Midwest having played for the West Michigan Jazz Society (Grand Rapids, MI), Polyrhytms (Davenport,IA), the Firefly Jazz Club (Ann Arbor, MI), the Wilson Center for the Arts (Milwaukee, WI), the Detroit Institute for the Arts (Detroit, MI), and headlined the 32nd Michelob Women In Jazz Festival (Dayton, OH). At the start of the Great Recession in September 2008, Petra's Recession Seven, a Chicago-style early swing/trad jazz band was born at Chicago's legendary Green Mill. This seven piece ensemble features an all-star line up of internationally known Chicago veterans including trombonist Russ Phillips, reed man Eric Schneider, and trumpeter Bob Ojeda. Festival appearances include the 32nd Elkhart Jazz Festival, 33rd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the 34th, 35th, 37th, 40th and 42nd annual Cedar Basin Jazz Festival, Fitzgerald's 29th annual American Music Festival, the Juvae Jazz Society's 25th anniversary Festival, and the Illiana Club of Traditional Jazz's 40th anniversary Jazz Festival. The band regularly travels to regional jazz societies such as the Madison Jazz Society, the Starr-Gennett Foundation, the "Masters of Swing" series at Cincinnati's Xavier University, the Lafayette Jazz Club, and the Indianapolis Jazz Club. The American Rag, in a review of the band's 2011 on location recording Live In Chicago praises "a killer of a band that grabs your attention and doesn't give it back until they are finished playing." You may have heard selections from Petra's 2006 debut CD A Sweet Refrain on digital cable's Music Choice, where it regularly rotates on the "Singers & Swing" channel. In a review, Los Angeles Jazz Scene critic Scott Yanow notes "a sweet voice, a straightforward delivery....one hears touches of Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, and Mildred Bailey in her phrasing, but not in the sound of her voice which is distinctive." This CD is a throwback to the classic vocal recordings of the 50's with a blend of duo, quartet, quintet, and tight two-horn sextet arrangements by bassist/arranger Joe Policastro. In 2012, these arrangements were recreated with the teaming of Petra and Andy with four Canadian musicians at Edmonton's famed Yardbird Suite. In 2015, two songs from this CD were selected by famed Japanese jazz writer/historian/record producer Yasukuni Terashima to be included in the compilation CD For Jazz Vocal Fans Only on the Japanese label Disk Union. Petra continues to play with Chicago's finest instrumentalists including Bobby Lewis, Art Davis, Kim Cusack, Larry Harris, Greg Fishman, Chris White, Joe Adamik, Joe Policastro, Bob Rummage, Andy Schumm, Jeremy Kahn, Judy Roberts, Phil Gratteau, Don Stille, Dan Delorenzo, Tom Bartlett, Mike Schlick, Bill Overton, Bradley Williams, Ron Dewar, John Otto, Stewart Miller, and Don Stiernberg.

Last night, I went to MIT to witness a lecture between legendary journalist/author Harry Allen & legendary DJ/turntablist Rob Swift. I had known both for quite a while but the subject matter of the lecture really resonated with me on many levels as a creative who isn't constantly aspiring to be better and reach the many lofty goals I have for myself which I might never reach. This podcast is about self discovery, self expression & reminding myself to enjoy the process/journey rather than the fact I'm not where I want to be yet. John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned guitarist and singer, has established himself as a prime contemporary interpreter of the Great American Songbook and beyond, with a repertoire that includes Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and The Beatles. His wildly successful Midnight McCartney had its origins in McCartney's Grammy Award-winning 2012 album, Kisses on the Bottom. Pizzarelli played guitar on 10 of the album's 14 tracks and backed Sir Paul at an iTunes concert at Capitol Records Studios and the Grammy Awards. Pizzarelli's solo recording career began in 1990 with My Blue Heaven on Chesky Records. He played clubs and concert halls on the jazz circuit, opening for such greats as Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis and Rosemary Clooney. In 1993, he opened for Frank Sinatra's international tour and then joined in the celebration for his 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall. In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, John has been a special guest on recordings for major pop names such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Van Ronk, as well as leading jazz artists including: Rosemary Clooney, Ray Brown, Johnny Frigo, Ruby Braff, Buddy DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, his father Bucky Pizzarelli. John has performed on national television shows including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Conan,” “Great Performances” on PBS, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as the talk shows of Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Regis Philbin. Pizzarelli performs annual fall engagements at the Café Carlyle with Jessica Molaskey. A radio personality who started in the medium in 1984, Pizzarelli is co-host, alongside Jessica Molaskey, of the nationally syndicated “Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli.” His latest album is For Centennial Reasons: 100 Year Salute to Nat King Cole, available from Ghostlight Deluxe. In this episode, John shares his one way ticket back to 1954 New York City. He also reflects on the life, work and greatness of Nat King Cole, collaborating with the likes of Rosemary Clooney and Sir Paul McCartney, and tells us what goes through his mind when he's on stage performing. John is just one of the dynamic guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals and more.

A surprise selection in the Crusaders front row for their Super Rugby match with the Highlanders this weekend.George Bower replaces the injured Joe Moody at loosehead prop, with Harry Allen remaining on the bench.Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says Bower is a strong, versatile prop forward. There are eight changes to the Crusaders starting fifteen including a first appearance of the season for captain Sam Whitelock."Every team has to go in with confidence," says Whitelock. "They're a good pack and will be trying to build on the success they've had this year. They'll be excited by that. That's our challenge. We have to go down to their home patch."All Black Whitelock's return could hardly have come at a better time – especially with his Crusaders and national teammate Scott Barrett putting in such a busy start to the year.Barrett is due for a rest next week when the Crusaders play the Waratahs in Sydney, as is Richie Mo'unga."It's good in a couple of ways," Robertson said of Whitelock's return. "We've grown a couple of other leaders while he's been away and he's keen and energetic and as good a nick physically as he's been for a few years."When Skip first said he'd be away you think 'well, how are we going to deal with it' because he's been a big part of our success but he's been working behind the scenes and he comes back with great energy."Whitelock said his priority would be to get through as many minutes as he can, adding that he felt the toll of a busy year while with the All Blacks in November."I felt in a pretty good space but lacked a little bit of that last five or 10 per cent especially in those first couple of steps out of a breakdown or getting off the ground," he said. "If you take that away for a player that can be frustrating but it's in the past now and I'm pretty happy."Crusaders team to play Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm is: 15 David Havili, 14 Braydon Ennor, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo'unga, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Whetu Douglas, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Jordan Taufua, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Scott Barrett, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 George Bower.Reserves: 16 Andrew Makalio, 17 Harry Allen, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Quentin Strange, 20 Tom Sanders 21 Ere Enari, 22 Brett Cameron, 23 Will Jordan.

When some talk about music that promotes peacemaking, hip hop and rap often get left out of the conversation. Some critics speculate about that genre's negative influence - from hypersexual music videos to glamorizing guns and drugs. A recent Washington Post headline quotes jazz musician Wynton Marsalis calling popular hip hop “more damaging than a statue of Robert E. Lee.” In this episode of Peace Talks Radio, Hannah Colton explores peacemaking in hip hop culture and history with one documentarian and one artist. First, Hannah speaks with Brother Ali, a Minneapolis-based rapper, community organizer and spiritual teacher. Ali, who is white, was born albino and partially blind, and says as a kid he found belonging in the black community and hip hop culture. As a young man he converted to Islam, and he speaks to ideas of spirituality in his 2017 album “All The Beauty In This Whole Life.” Then Hannah speaks with Harry Allen, a hip hop activist who has written for many publications including the Village Voice, The Source, Essence and Wired magazines.

Product and interior designer Harry Allen shares with Amy and Jaime how his childhood in New Jersey was shaped by frequent field trips to NYC, how he collaborated with chef Daniel Boulud to design his thesis project, and why he decided to cast an actual piglet for his now-famous piggy bank. Also, he's able to cut a really tight circle on a pair of skates, and we suspect he is a total boss in the rink. Images and more from our guest! Please say Hi on social! To understand the impact of Greg Tate, one need only consult the words of fellow critic Michael Gonzales, who on the occasion of Tate's 50th birthday wrote: "For better or worse, if it were not for Greg Tate, there would be no Bonz Malone, Harry Allen, Joan Morgan, Kris Ex, Scott Poulson Bryant, Toure, Danyel Smith, Michael Eric Dyson, Karen R. Goode, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, Smokey Fontaine, Jon Caramanica, Jeff Chang, Amy Linden, Tom Terrell, Mark Anthony Neal, Tricia Rose, Sasha Jenkins, DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller), Dream Hampton, Miles Marshall Lewis, Aliya King, SekouWrites, Kenji Jasper, Oliver Wang, Cheo Hodari Coker, Keith Murphy or myself." Gonzales offers high praise for one of the singular critical voices of the last 30 years. The author of several books including the classic Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America (1993) and the edited volume Everything But the Burden: What White People Are Taking From Black Culture (2003), Greg Tate joins Left of Black host Mark Anthony Neal (via Skype) in a rousing discussion of Black Science Fiction, being a "gourmand" of Black Culture and the significance of the late musical conductor Butch Morris. Tate is the longtime conductor of Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, a former Village Voice Staff Writer and currently Visiting Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University. Duke University Press will publish Flyboy 2: The Greg Tate Reader next year.

Can we kick it? It's debatable. In this episode More of That dives into the beginning of our look at the first three A Tribe Called Quest albums. Join us as we begin our travels by discussing what it means to Push it Along, get a geography lesson on Queens, find out what a pubic enemy is, and learn the description of a fool. Along the way we also investigate what Q-Tip meant by “kissing you where others won't” and whether or not any of these songs would make for a good cover by More of That.
