Among the legendary singers of the 27 Club who captivated the world with their music and lyrics, is a woman who is not as well known—one whose powerful voice and thought-provoking lyrics set her apart from the men dominating the industry. Mia Zapata and her band, The Gits, were on the verge of becoming a household name in Seattle's grunge and punk rock scene when everything was ripped away one night in July of 1993. Mia Zapata's violent murder shocked Seattle as a whole. Who would want to kill a woman, with no enemies, who was so dynamic, vibrant, and creative, and how did they get away with murder for a decade?Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Instagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.comABOUT — The Gits. Following KEXP's recent event celebrating The Gits and Martin Douglas's recent Throwaway Style newsletter, we want to tell you more about these contemporaries of Kurt Cobain. The Gits were an early '90s Seattle band. Sub Pop Records recently launched a campaign to rerelease remastered versions of The Gits’ catalogue. So much of the band’s story has been wrapped around the 1993 rape and murder of The Gits frontwoman Mia Zapata. Late last year at KEXP’s Gathering Space, our colleague Emily Fox spoke with The Gits guitarist Andy Kessler and bassist Matt Dresdner about the band’s legacy and the life of Mia. In July 1993, Mia Zapata, a rising star in the genre of punk rock music, joined what is morbidly referred to as “The 27 Club” - artists and celebrities whose lives ended at the age of 27. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse all qualify. But like other members of this unfortunate club, Mia Zapata didn't die as the result of a drug overdose or by her own hand. She was murdered on the streets of Seattle just before she reached success with her band, The Gits. In this episode, I'll detail the life, death, and lasting legacy of Mia Zapata. A legendary punk band that came out of Yellow Springs.
In the early 90s, Seattle was at the center of a sonic revolution. Grunge, a homegrown sludgy rock sound, became a global commodity. At the same time, another sound was making its mark on Seattle. The Gits were a band on the precipice of national stardom, standing out with their punk sensibility and charismatic female vocalist, with music labels circling. But the promise of a big break came to a violent end. The band's lead singer, Mia Zapata, was murdered in 1993. It happened in the early morning hours after a show at the Comet Tavern. For years, in media accounts, the band was defined by that tragic night. Today, the Gits' drummer, Steve Moriarty, says he doesn't want an act of violence to overshadow their full story. His book, Mia Zapata and the Gits: A True Story of Art, Rock, and Revolution, tells a fuller story of the band's existence. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Mia Zapata and the Gits: A True Story of Art, Rock and Revolution (Ferel House, 2024) by Steve Moriarty, shares the story of the Seattle based The Gits and their charismatic front person Mia Zapata. The Gits were on the verge of international rock stardom but on July 7, 1993, days before their third US tour, Mia Zapata, The Gits 27-year-old singer-songwriter, was brutally assaulted and murdered by a stranger. Zapata's death sent chilling ripples through progressive communities throughout the United States. She became a cause-celebre for women's rights activists outraged by the brutal killing and lack of law enforcement support. This book reclaims Zapata's story to focus on the art she and The Gits created and not her tragic end. Much has been written and said about her murder, yet Zapata's life and work remain overshadowed by the circumstances of her death. Zapata's friend and bandmate, Steve Moriarty, tells her story--and the story of their band, The Gits--from their first meeting in 1985 to their last goodbye. Moriarity and Zapata met in 1985 as first-year students at Antioch College, where they discovered the power of punk rock and found an outlet for their progressive ideas through music. Zapata, Moriarity, and fellow students Matt Dresdner and Andy Kessler attended a show by San Francisco punk legends Dead Kennedys that inspired the friends to start a band fueled by Mia's provocative lyrics. They quickly gained critical praise and dedicated fans. Moriarty details their struggles as newcomers to the then-pre-tech outpost of the Seattle music scene. Interspersed are the tales Zapata told of her legendary ancestor, Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, to entertain the band as they spent countless hours on the road crammed into a single un-air-conditioned van touring the US and Europe. They shared stages with Beck, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Joan Jett, Bikini Kill, L7, and more--all who expected Mia and The Gits to be the next "big thing." The Gits's story is more than a biography; it's a testament to the ability of artists and musicians to challenge the status quo and the power of friendship to change the world. Moriarty reframes the sensationalist story as he shares his personal narrative and presents, with intimacy, grit, and humor, the lived experience of The Gits and his dear friend, Mia Zapata. Included are never before seen paintings, letters, and pictures. Learn more about your ad choices. Our guest is Steve Moriarty, former drummer of the band The Gits and author of the new book Mia Zapata and The Gits: A Story of Art, Rock, and Revolution. The Gits, led by their charismatic frontwoman Mia Zapata, formed in Ohio before joining the burgeoning Seattle music scene of the early 90s. They were on the brink of international stardom when, on July 7, 1993, just days before their third US tour, Mia was brutally murdered. Her death came as a shock to the Seattle music scene and eventually became a national story. It would be a decade before her killer was arrested. During that time, the focus of Mia's story shifted further and further away from her talents and the music she created with The Gits. In this book, Steve Moriarty is determined to shift the focus from Mia's tragic end back to the art she and The Gits created, recounting their journey from their first meeting at Antioch College in 1985 to their rise in the Seattle music scene. Steve narrates the band's struggles, their inspirations, and the camaraderie that fueled their music, as well as the band's tours and performances alongside iconic acts like Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Joan Jett.Purchase a copy of Mia Zapata and The Gits: A Story of Art, Rock, and Revolution Episode Playlist ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe

Mia was murdered on her way home after leaving a friend's house in the early morning hours of July 7th, 1993. Her murder would remain unsolved for 10 years until DNA testing would finally bring her killer to justice. Edited by Chrissy Champagne*Episode has been updated to correct a mistake. The 27 Club There have been a shocking number of artists who have all died at the same very young age, early into what was already a hugely successful and influential career, but should have been a long and legendary career. They are The 27 Club. We discuss the major figures that the public most associates with this club -- Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse -- but we bring in a bunch of other members as well, like artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan of the Grateful Dead, D. Boon of The Minutemen, Echo and the Bunnymen drummer Pete de Freitas, Mia Zapata of the Gits, Kristen Pfaff of Hole, actor Anton Yelchin, and more. We discuss why there's a 27 Club (when there could equally be a 26 Club or a 28 Club, etc) and why people have historically been so fascinated by it. Afterward, we name our Picks of the Week, including new releases by Peter Gabriel, Metallica, Ghost, Frank Bango, The National, Cathedral Bells, and The Crocodiles, plus a show by The Church of the Cosmic Skull. In reaction to poor treatment in the scene, the Riot Grrrl! movement started with Bikini KIll's Kathleen Hanna's manifesto. Taking the form of a band pamphlet, it spawned a sub-genre in the Punk world, and gave voice to women who liked to kick ass on stage! Markus and Ray dig into the bands, the fans, and this new branch of politics. The long-unsolved murder of Mia Zapata of The Gits only underlined the need for Grrrls to unite! Blessed with fire and passion on display through her voice and lyrics, the murder of Mia Zapata robbed the world of her potential. With The Gits, she and guitarist Joe Spleen, bass player Matt Dresdner, and drummer Steve Moriarty made grunge mixed with hardcore punk on their 1992 album Frenching The Bully. With only four years together, the debut record displays potential in the same way Bleach gives hints of what Nirvana was to become on the released but unfinished follow-up album Enter: The Conquering Chicken. Hello Eavesdroppers! It's another True Crime Time episode this week and we've got two awful cases for you, but before we kick off, Michelle chats boobs and the joys of single duvets, the pair rack their brains to remember the comedian who came up with ‘Chorley FM - coming in your ears' (it was Peter Kay!), all before Geordie takes us back in time to discuss a murder that rocked the Seattle grunge scene in the 1990s… On July 6 1993, Mia Zapata, who was the talented lead singer of a Seattle band called The Gits, had been out drinking with mates. She'd had a lot of drinks, had gone over to her mate's place before heading off into the night… Hours later her lifeless body was found in a Christ pose in Seattle's red-light district with no clues as to her killer. What happened to Mia? How did it affect Seattle's tight-knit music scene? And was the murderer ever found? Listen now to find out! Michelle then talks about what happened to Hollywood actor Johnny Lewis. If you were ever a fan of The O.C or Sons of Anarchy, you might remember the pale ginger actor who played Chili on The O.C or Half Sack from Sons of Anarchy… If not, you'll still be intrigued by this tragic case… On September 26 2012, Johnny Lewis was found dead on the driveway of the Writers' Villa in Los Feliz in Los Angeles. He'd either fallen or jumped from the patio or roof and had died on impact. But what were the circumstances leading up to his death? And how did Johnny go from sensitive soul to murderer? Listen now to unravel the case! We hope you enjoy this week's episode and remember, wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever and our opinions are just opinions not fact, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy! Amelia is BACK for an episode of THE Weirdest Thing Podcast! This week we cover two absolutely badass women in history. Amelia talks about Linda Coffee, the unsung hero of Roe Vs. Wade and the battle for reproductive rights, while Scotty discusses the too-short life and immense musical legacy of Mia Zapata, lead singer of The Gits. CONTENT WARNING: This week's episode talks about sexual assault and murder. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
If you haven't yet listened to the episode on Mia Zapata go do that and come back to this bonus episode :). In this interview we talk to Mia's close friend and Gits drummer, Steve Moriarty, about their days at the rat house and so much more.
In 1993 27 year old musician and The Gits frontwoman, Mia Zapata, left her friend's apartment around 2AM. An hour later, her body was found. She had been murdered. The drawstrings from her own band's sweatshirt had been used to strangle her. It would take over a decade before Mia would receive justice. This is her story… RESOURCES: Link to The Gits Documentary (2005): https://dai.ly/x2fn41o Unsolved Mysteries – Season 8, episode 9 (Aired 2/1/1996) Forensic Files Season 12 Ep 7 Video of RatHouse https://www.youtube.com/user/KristinNirvana/about Monty Python clip: https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/ce6d6081-6c0a-41eb-93db-2c34df9c55f0 https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/mia-zapata-murderer-dead-1170206/ https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Mia_Zapata https://www.seattlemet.com/news-and-city-life/2014/03/will-mia-zapata-be-remembered-march-2014 https://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Singer-s-killer-gets-37-years-1143741.php https://web.archive.org/web/20130406042509/http://thegits.com/?page_id=410 https://casefilepodcast.com/case-77-mia-zapata/ http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19930826&slug=1717883 https://musicoholics.com/first-look/that-one-fateful-night-what-happened-to-mia-zapata/ https://nehistripes.com/2018/07/27/legendary-status-mia-zapata-and-the-gits-more-than-30-years/ https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/mia-zapata-punk-musician-murdered-in-1993-changing-seattle-grunge-scene-694965/ https://www.thestranger.com/news/2003/01/16/13100/finally https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/mia-zapatas-killer-convicted-255027/ https://caselaw.findlaw.com/wa-court-of-appeals/1329872.html http://www.louisvillemusicnews.net/webmanager/index.php?WEB_CAT_ID=50&storyid=2905&headline=Zapata_Murder_Trial_Verdict https://www.seattlemet.com/news-and-city-life/2014/03/will-mia-zapata-be-remembered-march-2014 https://edition.cnn.com/2004/LAW/03/09/zapata/ Music Used: Walking with the Dead by Maia Wynne Link: https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Maiah_Wynne/Live_at_KBOO_for_A_Popcalypse_11012017 License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Deadly Roulette by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3625-deadly-roulette License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license Chill Wave by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://filmmusic.io/song/3498-chill-wave License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

It's Mini Corner #3 and we got a theme going on! It's the 90's in Washington State. Erin tells a chilling case of two woman, Tracey Brazzel & Patti Berry while Mariah sets the scene of grunge Seattle and the sad case of Mia Zapata!
This week we strap on our old Doc Martins trudge through the muck and grime of the springtime in the US Pacific Northwest. Yep, time for our annual spring GRUNGE episode! We discuss the bands just outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts remember this time fondly, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all rock n' roll avenues in the US. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. What do you think? This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Kevin's wheelhouse, and we find out the impact this had on Robert's musical path. We discuss the origins of the movement and have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Come jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks and some flannel.Songs this week include:Kerbdog – “Cleaver” from Kerbdog (1994)Hammerbox – “Hole” from Numb (1993)Pond – “Tree” from Pond (1993) Brad – “Raise Love” from Shame (1993)The Gits – “Another Shot Of Whiskey” from Frenching The Bully (1992)Mudhoney – “Living Wreck” from Piece Of Cake (1992)7 Year Bitch – “M.I.A.” from Viva Zapata! Mia Zapata was the singer and frontwoman of The Gits, a Seattle punk band, at the time she was found brutally murdered on July 7, 1993. Since she was 27 years old at the time of her death, she is part of the infamous 27 Club. With no viable suspects, her case went cold for nearly a decade before an arrest was made.SOURCESThe Gits; 2005; Documentary by Kerri O'Kanehttps://caselaw.findlaw.com/wa-court-of-appeals/1329872.htmlhttps://www.frontpagedetectives.com/p/mia-zapata-death-murder-music-seattle-dnahttps://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/mia-zapata-punk-musician-murdered-in-1993-changing-seattle-grunge-scene-694965/amp/https://loriajohnston.medium.com/the-murder-of-mia-zapata-816919e23a09https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/mia-zapata-murderer-dead-1170206/#:~:text=Jesus%20Mezquia%2C%20the%20man%20convicted%20of%20murdering%20Seattle%20musician%20Mia,He%20was%2066%20years%20oldhttps://unsolved.com/gallery/mia-zapata/https://pitchfork.com/news/34514-mia-zapatas-killer-sentenced-for-good-finally/https://musicoholics.com/first-look/that-one-fateful-night-what-happened-to-mia-zapata/27/http://www.teachhomealive.org/https://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-gits-mn0000077821/biography
In this episode, we discuss the murders of two people who worked in the music business. Adding to the tragedy of the murders is the fact that it took over 10-years for the cases to be solved.
Joan Jett catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Changeup, her very first acoustic album that finds classics and deep cuts stripped down to their roots. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend takes us into what prompted the project, turning down MTV when they asked her to do the first Unplugged, how songs like "Cherry Bomb" and "Victim of Circumstance" changed with the new set, and how the recent 40th anniversaries of "Bad Reputation" and "I Love Rock and Roll" influenced her song choices. Jett also takes us back making 1987's "Light of Day" with Michael J. Fox, recording a tribute to the late Mia Zapata in the band Evil Stig, wanting to do a second volume of acoustic songs, and if she'd consider a record of new songs in this style. Joan also previews her upcoming summer tour with Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Poison, tells us how she got her trademark scream from Marc Boland, and the details on her new guitar with Epiphone.
