In recent seasons, she has appeared as an invited soloist with orchestra more than forty times in Europe, Asia, North and South America, as well as numerous chamber music festivals. Her recording of the last 3 Mozart Violin Concerti for Mozart Effect recordings released worldwide in 2017. In addition to a rich career as a soloist and concertmaster, she is a sought-after teacher, clinician, adjudicator and speaker in Canada and abroad. Since founding the AVIVA Virtual Young Artist Program (the first web-based pre-college music program in the world) she has touched lives around the world, teaching thousands of lessons to students on five continents via webcam, piloting projects aimed at accessibility, and training hundreds of teachers and creative entrepreneurs. Mary-Elizabeth is widely recognized as a pioneer in the world of innovation in classical music and technology. She recently made international news from The Hong Kong Economic Times to NPR's Science Friday with her design for low-cost stringed instruments using 3D printers and plastic polymers. I was wild about this conversation. I really appreciated Mary-Elizabeth's wise take on the portfolio career, on keeping all of your various pots and streams managed, on how to cope with the messy middle parts of projects, and on how to keep growing as an artist and a human as you help others! I know you will love hearing from her. Find Mary-Elizabeth at her website, or at www.avivayoungartists.com, or www.printaviolin.com Here are her upcoming programs: LAUNCH! Towards the end of last year in December 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported that more than 300,000 US accountants and auditors had left their jobs in the past two years. On the academic front, they reported that college enrollment for finance and accounting degrees fell by 17%. Now, this mass exodus of finance and accounting professionals is not entirely a new phenomenon. We've heard a lot over the last couple of years about the COVID 19 induced great resignation and of quiet quitting. But where these conversations fall short is addressing what happens next? What happens now when employers can't fill the gap that's been created by the number of people who have left their finance and accounting jobs? And what does this trend or these generational shifts really mean for the industry at large? Special Guests: Dr. Wayne Williams, Elizabeth Brown, and Richard Deosingh.
Elizabeth waited fifty years to write a searing and honest account about her involvement with a Big Bad Wolf, a man who sought to control her emotionally, spiritually, and psychically. Elizabeth shares insights drawn from myths and fairy tales to illustrate how mistrusting her perceptions and inner warnings led to folly. Her book covers it all; from her difficult childhood to a mystical experience, her toxic relationship and subsequent trauma, and her long quest for inner healing. She writes with warmth and compassion about her experiences, occasionally injecting sly humour into the story. She wishes to encourage women who have been through similar experiences so that they, too can grow from survivor to thriver. “What a courageous story of triumph. I could relate to times in my life when I betrayed my own sense of knowing and experienced deep despair from accepting someone else's claims of what I should believe. Elizabeth's book lets us know we are not alone in this experience and provides tools for forgiving ourselves and going on to live a full life.” - Esther Hart, author of Journey to Personal Freedom and Giggle Factor, a Grownup Fairy Tale

This is an audio version of the Sermon from the Burial Services for two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Bradford Taylor Brown and Susan Elaine Bradford. Both sisters had died over a year ago, but because of the Covid-19 global pandemic, the families did not think it wise to gather family and friends together until now. The sermon is preached by Father Blackburn, the Priest-in-Charge of Saint Christopher's By-the-Sea. The readings, not included on this podcast but referenced in the sermon include Wisdom 3:1-5, 9; Romans 8:14-19, 34-35, 37-39, and John 11:21-27.

Aglow Rise Up Conference Sess 4 w/Elizabeth Brown 5.16.21 by Louada Raschke
Elizabeth Brown was elected to Columbus City Council in 2015 and holds the office of President Pro Tempore. She's the executive director of the Ohio Women's Public Policy Network, a member of the Columbus Women's Commission, and serves on various committees, such as for the CelebrateOne Policy. An accomplished writer, Liz initially pursued a career in journalism, working for WOSU Public Radio and being published by New York Magazine. Eventually, she realized that her work wasn't satisfying her life calling and decided to follow in her father's footsteps by turning her hobby of politics into a career. To this day, she maintains that writing is one of the most important and practical skills a person can have. One thing led to another and she was able to turn her work as a Campaign Manager into a seat on the Columbus City Council, where she's now led the city through a pandemic and beyond. Our conversation covers her entire life story, from the stressful early years through to her city council job and beyond as we get into what the future might hold – both for the city and for Liz. We explore her gratitude for her difficult childhood, we grapple with the idea of a politician as someone who serves popular opinion versus someone who makes independent decisions based on what they believe is right, and we examine the benefits of injecting fresh, outsider perspectives into organizations and groups where things have gone stale. What Brett asks: [00:02:30] How did you get to where you are today? [00:05:10] Do you believe fresh, outside perspectives can be valuable in politics? [00:10:30] Let's go back to the beginning. Tell me about your childhood. [00:15:00] You talk about there being silver linings in the negatives of your upbringing but was that how you saw things at the time? [00:18:20] Did your parents maintain a good relationship after their divorce? [00:20:50] What were you like as a child once you started school? [00:23:55] Was your desire to follow in your dad's footsteps evident in childhood? [00:25:18] What was your mom's line of work? [00:28:00] What role have the arts had in your life? [00:29:50] What happened once you finished school and began thinking about your career? [00:35:20] What was your first job in the world of politics? [00:39:40] What was your path from campaign manager to being on the city council? [00:42:00] You spend so much time taking care of other people, how do you manage to recharge your own batteries? [00:46:30] Coming out of the pandemic, how are you finding your role as a leader in the city, today? [00:53:00] Would you say it's accurate that you have no separation between work life and personal life? [00:54:55] What does the future look like for you and for Columbus? [01:00:10] Any final thoughts? As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you'll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish).Go to https://www.ginstephens.com/cleanish.html for more information. The book will be released on 1/4/22, but you can preorder now through Amazon or your favorite online book retailer. Preordering is really important, as it gives the publisher an idea of how many books to print. Elizabeth is a social worker, and she shares that her mother was always on a diet. Elizabeth decided to follow in her mom's footsteps, beginning in 7th grade. In January of 2020, a close friend shared IF with her, and Elizabeth began with 16:8. She was feeling great and losing weight until the pandemic hit in March. By the end of April, she had gained back everything she lost. Knowing IF was her lifestyle, and committed to getting back to feeling great, Elizabeth gradually shortened her window and moved to a one meal a day approach. To date, Elizabeth has lost 20 pounds, going from 185 to 165. Instead of a goal weight, she has decided: "to like what I see in pictures." She knows that her body will settle on the right weight, so she is trusting the process. For Elizabeth, IF is a peaceful way to live. The advice Elizabeth would give new IFers: Take it day by day. IF is like a muscle--the more you do it, the better you become! GBA Case History Series – Case History #64 - Good communication is key to a successful project! Summary GBA has published over 100 case histories based on real-life events that have happened to geoprofessional firms. This episode in the series explores Case History #64 where the GBA Member Firm's civil engineer client developed the geotechnical engineering scope of services for exploration on and around an existing landfill, without adequately conveying the project goals to the geotechnical engineer. The civil engineer then erred when transferring information from the member's report to a set of plans. Both the civil engineering firm and Member Firm settled the ensuing claim, but paid more than they believed was merited for their respective involvement. Our Guest Eric S. Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
Feudalism – it’s what they did in the Middle Ages! Nobles controlled the land and extracted labor from the serfs, and everyone from peasants to great lords was arranged in a big hierarchical pyramid leading up to the king. Or were they? We examine the ambiguities inherent in the idea of “feudalism,” and the reasons why it simply cannot hold up to examination against the historical record. Finally, we consider why the myth of feudalism developed and has persisted as a way of justifying the inequalities of our own era. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. This week, Gabe and Jaime review the hearing on Senate Bill 155, with testimony being offered by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and many of our partners. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio strongly opposes Senate Bill 155. This bill requires medical professionals to give at best medically unproven information and at worst, information that could harm their patients. Abortion “reversal” has not been scientifically researched and its potential side effects and risks have not been determined. Politicians should never mandate that health care providers give their patients inaccurate information about an unproven treatment. The last several months for the proprietors of Elk Grove's Dreaming Dog Brewery have been two tails. The first tale was of the successful launch and establishment by David and Elizabeth Brown of their popular brewery and tasting room located at the Stonelake Landing shopping center on the west side of Elk Grove. Their efforts to build a friendly, community-based gathering spot was recognized by the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and awarded the Brown's with the 2018 Rookie Business of the Year. The other tale came with the announcement by their landlord, California Northstate University, that as part of their proposed $750 million hospital, the shopping center where the brewery is located would be demolished. That news created a swirl of activity not only for residents in the nearby Stonelake and Lakeside neighborhoods but caught the Brown's by surprise as well. In our conversation, along with brewery talk, David Brown discusses what the future may hold for the community gathering place that has quickly become a favorite for many Elk Grove residents. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/elk-grove-news/support

The legacy of Alexander Hamilton tells us that he was Thomas Jefferson’s political rival, a man who fought to secure strong powers for the national government, and the first Secretary of the Treasury. What Hamilton’s legacy doesn’t tell us is that he also fought for states rights and championed civil liberties for all Americans, even those Americans who had supported the British during the American Revolution. Elizabeth Brown '13 considers the economic valuation of slaves in the decade prior to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1808. This project reconstructs the narrative of African women within the slave markets of New Orleans: the largest slave trading site in North America. Female bodies were subjected to a persistent economic and ideological valuation by the varied actors who participated in the market – slave, trader and planter – who commodified and attempted to dehumanize the slave, necessarily and intentionally reducing enslaved women “to the simplicity of a pure form: a person with a price.” By considering the valuation and ownership of productive and reproductive labors as the abolition of the trade loomed imminent, this project considers the ways in which enslaved women countered this process, shaping their sense of self and exercising personal agency within the confines of the market.
Field trips are always fun for school children. The typical trips are to museums, parks, and science centers. Of course, it depends on where you live. You have an advantage if you live in a city because there is more variety and entertainment. In a rural area, a school may have to be more creative to keep their field trips interesting. One activity that my kids took part in recently was geocaching. It has very quickly become popular globally, even in this small, rural area. So, what is it? Geocaching is considered an outdoor sporting activity in which players use some kind of navigational device (1). Coordinates (2)of a certain place are given, and the participants have to find their way there. Once they reach the exact spot, they search and find a container of some sort(3). Inside are inexpensive items such as toys, nicknacks(4), or items of interest or meaning. These can be taken and kept by the person doing the geocaching, but it is expected that the finder replace these items with something else. Also, inside the container will be a logbook where the geocacher will write the date and his or her personal geocaching code(5). You can receive a code by registering on-line as a geocacher. So, basically, this sport is like hide and seek, except that you're not hiding yourself but a cache, a treasure of some kind. As long as the container of the cache is waterproof, it will be safe until someone finds it. Geocaching started in Oregon in the United States in May of 2000, when a man by the name of(6) David Ulmer hid a cache and posted the coordinates on-line on the international Usenet newsgroup. Since then, geocaching has taken off(7), and is currently in 100 countries, even in Antartica. People continue to register on-line at sites like 'Geocaching.com' where you can find coordinates of caches in your area, and the rules of the game. So, it sounds like fun, doesn't it? It's a great, free activity that you can do with friends and family. Schools, of course, are taking advantage of this as well. When we went geocaching, my childrens' school split up into several groups and hunted around in the parks. While they walked from one cache to another, they picked up litter. As they came to the spots where the coordinates met, there was a lot of excited hunting, looking in bushes and trees, until someone would shout out excitedly, “I've found it!” One cache was tiny. We wouldn't have found it without the help of the teacher who had been there before. The container was a tiny, metal cylinder, about a third of the size of (8)a pencil. It had a screw top, and was inserted into a hole in a sign post. The logbook was a very small rolled up paper, and the cache was a sticker. The students were fascinated. After finding that cache, they discussed the possibilities of creating tiny and unusual caches that they could plant. I'm forming a list of activities to do this summer, and I think I have found one more thing to add to it: geocaching. 'A device' is a general word for a useful tool. It can range from a simple pair of scissors, to an iPad. a. When scissors were first invented, they must have been considered incredible devices. b. To geocache properly, it is best to have a navigational device. 'Coordinates' is an unusual word. Two 'o's' together usually create the 'ooo' sound, but not in this case. A similar word is 'cooperate'. Let's practice. 'Of some sort' is the same as saying 'of some kind'; the two expressions are interchangeable. a. When you plant a new tree, you should use some sort of support for it for the first year. b. He contracted some kind of skin disease, and had to use antibiotics to get rid of it. 'Nicknacks' has the same meaning as 'trinkets'. They are usually small items of little value such as collectibles, ornaments, fridge magnets, and memorabilia from vacations. a. After lunch, we walked around the town and looked at the trinket shops. We bought a few nicknacks. b. I wish you'd buy something decent, and not all of those cheap nicknacks. 'Geocaching' is the topic for today. One point to remember is the pronunciation of the 'ch': it sounds like 'sh'. 'By the name of' is used instead of 'called' or 'is called'. a. A woman by the name of Elizabeth Brown established this line of ceramics. b. A man by the name of Rodger Snoops informed the police about the suspect. 'To take off' is used in several contexts. A plane can take off (when it first leaves the airport). Also, a hobby or sport can take off, as in become very popular. a. Geocaching has taken off over the past twelve years because everyone likes to hunt for treasure, and it is inexpensive. b. Reality shows took off about ten years ago, and are now in every country. When comparing sizes using fractions, we use expressions like 'half (of)the size of' or 'three quarters (of) the size of'. The first of is usually included in British English, whereas in the U.S it is missed out. a. The dog is half (of) the size of the cat. b. The museum is three quarters (of) the size of the bus station. // //
