On this episode we talk to Max Justice from Setas Mushrooms — the innovator behind MyCoffin, biodegradable coffins made of mycelium and industrial hemp. Justice is the co-founder and CEO of Setas Eternal Living, a company that offers people a sustainable end-of life solution — with aspirations to disrupt the death industry with affordable and sustainable options. For Justice, Setas Eternal Living was logical next step in his fungus journey. He and his wife started Setas Mushrooms on their farm in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, after discovering the healing power of mushrooms during his wife's illness. Fungus changed their lives forever. In this episode we'll hear about the process of making coffins from mycelium and hemp and how this product compares to traditional burial vessels. Compared to traditional caskets that will take centuries to breakdown, Justice's coffin will biodegrade in just a few years, making it a good option for green burial. Well this turned into a WHOLE THING! I don't know quite how to capture the way that Jarrod McKenna sharing from his own experience preaching in Perth, Australia (13 hours ahead of Greencastle, Indiana) and my experience in rural Indiana turned into a stunningly coherent vision—with Jarrod doing a revolutionary riff on three trees of Scripture, and my rediscovery of the story of the widow's offering in Mark's gospel as a source of liberation. But boy, you've gotta hear it. We desperately need clarity right now in this deeply Christian work of resistance, but we aren't going to have it so long as we still have planks in our eyes—and Jarrod beautifully helps us see where the planks are, inviting us into a place where God can renew our vision (for ourselves & others) in a way that makes transformation possible.
Today we have a very down to earth conversation with Matt Blank of Chronemic Consulting, one of our Vetfest sponsors and a friend to Greencastle and his Father Jack Blank a Navy Veteran and photographer. Matt and I have a lot of history. I've known Matt since the days when he was a DJ, and I was an event videographer, working a lot of weddings. we used to run into each other all the time and we're still running into each other even when we've both changes careers. That's gotta mean something right? The conversation is largely about building legacy and we pose the question what's worth more, money or time? Leave a comment on that below, we would love to know your view on that. We picks up with Matt and I talking about how people get in the way of professional photographers while capturing important moments.https://greencastleconsulting.com➡️ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/greencastleconsulting ➡️ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/1997GACPhiladelphia, Malvern, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Atlantic City, Wilmington, Washington D.C.
William Donn de Burgh, the 3rd Earl of Ulster, was, alas, not so great at being the Earl of Ulster. Starving his cousin Walter Liath de Burgh to death led to Walter's sister Gylle (also of course a cousin of William's) getting her husband to have him murdered. And then, the whole succession problem -- there were several cousins wandering around, and William's heir was a girl, and that was right out -- led to the Burke Civil War. What with one thing and another, though the de Burghs married into the Plantagenets and so became ancestors of the English royal family, they were also instrumental in causing Lots of Problems for England, in their attempt to keep Ireland under control, so their contribution to history is sorta vexed. Michelle is somewhat distressed by the lack of historical fiction about these people, but greatly mollified by the idea of touring Carrickfergus.

This classic Kinda Murdery episode originally aired on April 13, 2023. On February 1st, 1893, an African-American teen named John Howling, walking to work in the morning, spotted a young girl, lying in the grass on the side of the road to Fort Thomas Kentucky. At first, John thought she might be sleeping, or worse, taken by the late-winter cold and freezing (or already frozen.) Howling approached and laid a hand gently on the girls shoulder to awaken her. Suddenly, Howling was howling. He let out a blood curdling scream. The girl was headless. John didn't know it yet, but he had discovered the body of beloved Greencastle, Indiana socialite, Pearl Bryan. She was obviously dead, but why had the killer decapitated her, and where was Pearl's head now? For more Info: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.Org The Union XII Corps was formed in June 1862. The corps, which joined the Army of the Potomac only a week before Antietam was small, numbering just over 7,600 men. Easily overlooked, Army of the Potomac leadership and historians since have largely glossed over this corps' contribution at Antietam. Nevertheless, this small corps ended Confederate attacks into the Miller Cornfield and East Woods, successfully defended the Dunker Church Plateau from Confederate assaults, and captured the West Woods, which had been the goal on the Federal right all morning. Chris Bryan will provide a brief overview of the period from the Battle of Cedar Mountain until the corps' entry into Maryland, including its condition resulting from this period. The talk will then examine the XII Corps' participation in the Maryland Campaign and its fighting at Antietam, including some new findings discovered through recent archival research. M. Chris Bryan's Cedar Mountain to Antietam: A Civil War Campaign History of the Union XII Corps, July –September 1862 begins with the formation of this often-luckless command as the II Corps in Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia on June 26, 1862. Bryan explains in meticulous detail how the corps endured a bloody and demoralizing loss after coming within a whisker of defeating Maj. Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson at Cedar Mountain on August 9; suffered through the hardships of Pope's campaign before and after the Battle of Second Manassas; and triumphed after entering Maryland and joining the reorganized Army of the Potomac. The men of this small corps earned a solid reputation in the Army of the Potomac at Antietam that would only grow during the battles of 1863. Chris Bryan is a native of Greencastle, Pennsylvania. He earned a B.S. in History from the United States Naval Academy, an M.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, Annapolis, and a Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a focus on architectural investigations of Chesapeake region antebellum domestic and agricultural outbuildings. The former Naval Aviator works as a project manager in Southern Maryland. Cedar Mountain to Antietam is his first book.

Being one of the rare people to have an athletic trainer at his high school in the early 1970's he had a small understanding of what athletic trainers did. He started off with a couple of days a week of observation and then spending time with Jim Dickerson in a golf cart during the MAC cross country championship sealed the deal for Rex Call and sent him on a career path that has taken him across the country and then finally back home to DePauw University. Finally ending up back where he started at DePauw University, Greencastle, IN where he started an approved BOC athletic training education curriculum and developed a clinic staff program second to none at the NCAA Div. 3 level. Andrea Young is vice president for finance and administration and associate professor of mathematical sciences at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. In this episode, Young joins host Donna Schiele to discuss her career journey in higher education administration, the importance of shared governance, and building consortium relationships. "I think that oftentimes, particularly if one is new to higher education, shared governance can really be a big culture shift and can seem as though it is antithetical to change, that it's a barrier to getting work done," she says. Young goes on to explain how she sees shared governance as an opportunity for collaboration and sustainable change, not an obstacle. In this episode we wrap up season seven of the soil sense podcast with a well known and well respected farmer and long-time soil conservationist, Barry Fisher. Barry recently retired from his career at the USDA, where he most recently worked in the soil health division. In that capacity he met and spoke with farmers about soil health throughout the central part of the US. Since retirement, Barry manages his family farm in Greencastle, Indiana and has a consulting business where he does training and soil health education for organizations through Fisher Soil Health LLC. Barry discusses soil health principles, important considerations for transition to regenerative practices, and the essential role of a knowledgeable advisor. “If you really think about it, our current crops are only feeding the biology June, July, a little bit of May, and maybe a little bit of August. That's a very small percent of the total year… We did a lot of talking about no till as far as protecting erosion, but when we added cover crops to it, that was a game changer in that now the cover crop immediately fed more biology longer. That biology immediately started providing aggregate stability which absolutely helps the surface infiltration of soil, the aeration of soil. You know you start getting better structure to the surface of the soil and that can happen in as little as one season when we add cover crops.” - Barry Fisher One visual Barry has used to help demonstrate soil health to producers is what he has called the “fence row effect.” Previous fence rows can illustrate the value and yield potential when incorporating the four principles of soil health. There is a reduction in disturbance, added diversity of plant life, maintained living roots in the soil and because of that the soil is kept covered. These four principles can allow producers to see a bump in yield in these areas. Barry goes on to explain how to generalize some of those principles on an operation-wide basis. “Generally there's some farmer in the front row that says, “Okay Fisher, that's great, but, my landlord wants me to farm the whole farm, not just the old fence rows.”... I can show those aerial photos where management on one farm had the four principles kind of in place and the management on the farm right next to it did not. And the aerial photo is very telling that yes, we can manage beyond the fence row. We can get that fence row effect across the entire farm.” - Barry Fisher This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Barry Fisher a current Indiana farmer and retired USDA soil conservationist Explore what Barry calls the “fence row effect” and how that can be applied to demonstrating the four principles of soil health Discover Barry's recommendations in transitioning tillage and cover crop practices Thank you to the Soy Checkoff for sponsoring this Farmers for Soil Health series of the Soil Sense podcast. It's Wednesday, July 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British Conservative Party suspends politician for opposing homosexuality Britain's Conservative Party suspended a Christian political leader for opposing sexually perverted lifestyles. King Lawal is a member of the North Northamptonshire Unity Council. During so-called “Pride Month” in June, he tweeted this: “Pride is not a virtue, but a Sin. Those who have Pride should Repent of their sins and return to Jesus Christ. He can save you.” Within days, seven organizations cancelled Lawal. He may also face a police investigation. The Christian Legal Centre is now representing him. Lawal's tweet included a reference to Isaiah 3:9 which says, “They declare their sin as Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.” Brazil's Evangelical churches skyrocketed by 500% A new study by the University of Sao Paulo found the number of Evangelical churches in Brazil has grown by over 500%. The South American country had just over 7,000 Evangelical churches in 1990. The number grew to 100,000 in 2019. That's 17 new churches every day. The latest demographic data shows Brazil's Evangelical population doubled from 9% in 1990 to 22% in 2010. Researchers expect Evangelicals to become a majority in the now Catholic-majority nation. New over-the-counter contraceptive pill Last Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill, the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill. Perrigo, a company based in Ireland, plans to ship the pills out starting next year with no age restrictions. The approval comes during a time of legal battles over abortion. States are introducing more limits on abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022. Meanwhile, the FDA's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone is facing legal challenges. Tanking public school scores Public school test scores have been tanking recently according to new data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Average scores for 13-year-olds declined four points in reading and 9 points in mathematics compared with the 2019-2020 school year. The research also found children are less likely to spend their free time reading now. This year, 14% of students report reading for fun almost every day, down from 17% in 2020 and 27% in 2012. Higher-performing students were more likely to read for fun regularly. Worldview correction: Canadian Reformed Church rejects female pastors Yesterday, The Worldview reported and linked to a Christian Post article that indicated that the Canadian Reformed Church ordained women to church office. After receiving an email from a Worldview listener from within that denomination, we doublechecked the Canadian Reformed Church website and discovered that The Christian Post story was incorrect. In Article 3 of their Church Order, the Canadian Reformed Church denomination explains, “Only male members who have made profession of faith and may be considered to meet the conditions as set forth in Holy Scripture (e.g., in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1) shall be eligible for office.” We apologize for the error. Court: Kentucky can now protect kids from transgender drugs and surgeries A U.S. District Court lifted an injunction last Friday on a Kentucky law that protects children from transgender drugs and surgeries. The law is now fully enforceable in the state. Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron said, “Today's ruling is a win for parents and children. … Moving forward, my office will continue to defend Senate Bill 150 and stand up for the right of children to be children, free from the influences of leftist activists and radical gender ideology.” Proverbs 20:26 says, “A wise king sifts out the wicked, and brings the threshing wheel over them.” South African Worldview listener finds newscast hopeful Peter Goede in Pretoria, South Africa wrote, "Good day Adam. I listen to your broadcasts often, mostly when driving long hours in my bakkie or ‘pickup' as you Americans call it, as I'm visiting farmers for my work. I enjoy the news from a Christian perspective with added Scripture explaining the situation. Here in South Africa, the radio news becomes extremely depressing. “But with The Worldview in 5 Minutes, there is hope, reminding us always that God is in control. Therefore, I now tend to listen only to your newscast and Kevin Swanson's Generations Radio. Thank you for the work you are doing. May God bless you, and give Him the glory!" Send your email of feedback to Adam@TheWorldview.com. Father & son from Indiana share their thoughts about The Worldview Matthew Dreyer in Greencastle, Indiana explained how his family started listening to the newscast. MATTHEW: “Well, we started really primarily listening during the pandemic. It was kind of a way to keep ourselves sane. And just to listen as a family. We'd go out for hikes. We lived in New Mexico at the time. We were part of an audio Bible ministry out there, and I was home a lot. It meant a lot to us to be able to know that The Worldview was safe. And when there are more mature stories, there's a transcript we can read ahead on for the kids. “We would listen to it while we hiked. We would listen to it as a family. We talk about the persecuted church and what's going on there. We talk about what God's doing all over the world. And we appreciate the biblical perspective that you put on everything. So, we want to support you.” And his 15-year-old son, Elijah, shared his thoughts. ELIJAH: “I enjoy learning about the current news from a Christian perspective. It's really the only way I get my news.” 13 Worldview listeners gave $8,565 Thirteen Worldview listeners donated toward our $80,000 goal by Monday, July 31st to keep this unique Christian newscast on the air for another year. Our thanks to Adam in Caldwell, Idaho who gave $20, Dick and Karen in Largo, Florida who gave $25, Joe and Sheryl in Westmoreland, Tennessee who gave $50, Steve in Loveland, Colorado who gave $100, and Darcy in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada who pledged $10/month for 12 months for a total gift of $120. And we were touched by the kindness of David in Austin, Texas, Matthew in Marysville, Ohio, John in Sebastopol, California, and Vivia in Florida City, Florida – each of whom gave $600 as well as Thomas in South Bend, Indiana who gave $2,100. As promised, Shannan in Alexandria, Minnesota matched each of those last five donations with an additional $3,000! If you are the final Worldview listener to give a one-time gift of $600 or pledge $50/month for 12 months, Shannan will match your donation as well up to $600. Those 13 new donations add up to $8,565. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $41,546.16 (Crowd cheering sound effect) In order to hit our $60,000 immediate goal by this Friday, July 21st, we need to raise $18,453.84. That would mean 15 more people to pledge $50/month and 30 more to pledge $25/month. Just go to TheWorldview.com and click on “Give” at the top right to give what the Lord is prompting you to donate. It's Tuesday, July 18th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Chinese Communists are rewriting the Bible Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin wrote a Fox News column in which he announced yesterday that the Communist Chinese Party is rewriting the Bible. And, across one province, “local CCP officials forced Protestant churches to replace the Ten Commandments with Xi Jinping quotes. "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me" became "Resolutely guard against the infiltration of Western ideology." This comes as Party Chair Xi declared at the 19th Party Congress this year, "We will… insist on the sinicization of Chinese religions, and provide active guidance for religion and socialism to co-exist." “Conservative” denominations which welcome female leadershi The Christian Post has issued a list of what they call “theologically conservative” denominations which have incorporated women into leadership as pastors, priests and elders. They include: The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, the Anglican Church of North America, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, the Reformed Church in America, the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, the Wesleyan Church, Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, the Canadian Reformed Church, the Christian Reformed Church in North America, and the Four Square Church. The Christian Post also continues publishing opinions in support of bringing more women into church leadership. Sound of Freedom trouncing new Mission Impossible film Sound of Freedom, the recently released film which addresses child kidnapping and trafficking, has outsold Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One. Sound of Freedom has made $85 million in box office receipts, and the film collected another $27 million over the weekend. That's a 37% increase from the previous weekend sales. The production company for the film, Angel Studios, reports over 7 million in ticket sales, far exceeding their initial 2 million-ticket goal. Watch the trailer and get tickets through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. The teen porn pandemic Yet, more concerning, is a recent survey that found that pornography viewing among underaged kids, below the age 17, now stands at 75%, up from 42% in 2014. While about 300-400 children are kidnapped in this nation each year, 25,000,000 children are introduced to pornography between the ages of 10 and 17, with 12 being the average age of first exposure. Ezekiel 5:6 describes our nation. “She has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations and against My statutes more than the lands which surround her; for they have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.” Russia and Belarus barred from 2024 Olympic Games The Olympics have entered the realm of international politics with a new recommendation just out last week. Russia and Belarus are barred from the 2024 games — for their involvement in the Ukrainian war, reports NPR. Historically, the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980 upon the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan. And South Africa was banned from the Olympics in 1964 — for its apartheid policies. Canada greenlights euthanasia for mentally ill Canada is expanding its euthanasia program, or Medical Assistance in Dying, to the mentally ill beginning in March of 2024, reports The Messenger. The killing is increasing at a rate of 30% per year. Canadian doctors killed 10,064 people in 2021, not counting babies. That's up from 6,700 in 2020, and 3,100 in 2018. The program kicked off in 2015. New Iowan law bans abortion after 6 weeks Iowan Republican Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a 6-week abortion ban into law. The law allows exceptions for rape and incest, as well as miscarriages and fatal fetal abnormalities. Plus, it allows for the child to be aborted for any reason prior to the detection of a fetal heartbeat. Immediately upon the bill passing into law, pro-abortion forces jumped into action. State Judge Joseph Seidlin issued a court order to block enforcement. Iowa has seen a shift to a more conservative red in voting patterns as 58% of the gubernatorial vote went Republican in the 2022 elections. That was 44% in 2002 and 2006. Suspected serial killer just arrested for decades-old murders Numbers 32:33 warns, “Be sure your sin will find you out.” Police have arrested a suspected serial killer concerning murders taking place between 1996 and 2011 in Long Island, New York, reports Fox News. That's 12-26 years ago. An architect named Rex Heuermann is in police custody. About half of murders go unsolved in America which is about the lowest among industrialized nations. God's heat wave In God's providence, a major heat wave across the southern part of the U.S. is producing record-breaking temperatures. Phoenix, Arizona just tied a record. Temperatures there rose above 110 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 days straight. And the current 7-day forecast is looking like a 25-day run. The hottest place on Earth — Death Valley, California -- hit a temperature of 128 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday. That's just six degrees shy of the world record. What Jeff in Tennessee told me On Monday, I announced that Shannan in Alexandria, Minnesota generously offered to match, dollar for dollar, the first 10 people who gave a one-time gift of $600 or pledged $50/month for 12 months to help fund this newscast for another year. Jeff in Sevierville, Tennessee was one of the first four Worldview listeners to accept that challenge. When I called him up yesterday evening, this is what he told me. JEFF: “You may not know it, but you have coffee with me most mornings about sunrise. I really appreciate your broadcast. I've supported you for two or three years now. And I also knew that I needed to change the amount of my giving. So, I'm kind of calculating, and I keep coming up with this number, you know. “When I heard that Shannon from Alexandria, Minnesota had made a challenge to people, up to $600 amount, I knew then that that was the number that the Lord had given me to give to your ministry. So, that's what I did. I'm a steward and it's the Lord that's sown into your work.” 12 Worldview listeners gave $6,687.75 Through God's provision, 12 Worldview listeners donated toward our $80,000 goal by Monday, July 31st to keep this unique Christian newscast on the air. Our thanks to Christina in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania who gave $25, Ben in Wall, Texas and Eric in Burnet, Texas – both of whom gave $100, and Nancy in Ketchikan, Alaska who gave $180. We thank God for The Dreyer Family including Elijah, age 15, Malachi, age 12, and Samuel, age 8 in Greencastle, Indiana who collectively gave $232.75, Leann from Zeeland, North Dakota who gave $300, Ed in Wellsburg, Iowa who pledged $25/month for 12 months for a total gift of $300, and Julie in White Hall, Maryland who gave $350. We were touched by the kindness of Zephaniah in Lomax, Illinois, Jeff in Sevierville, Tennessee, and Caleb in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania – each of whom gave $600 as well as James in Lenoir, North Carolina who pledged $75/month for 12 months for a total gift of $900. As promised, Shannan in Alexandria, Minnesota will match those last four donations with a gift of $2,400. If you are one of the next six Worldview listeners to pledge $50/month for 12 months or give a one-time gift of $600, she will match you as well. Those 12 new donations add up to $6,687.75. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $32,981.16 (Crowd cheering sound effect) In order to hit our $60,000 immediate goal by this Friday, July 21st, we need to raise $27,018.84. After the next six people give $600 or pledge $50/month, we will need to raise $19,818.84. That would mean 16 more people to pledge $50/month and 32 more to pledge $25/month. Just go to TheWorldview.com and click on “Give” at the top right to give what the Lord is prompting you to donate. Make sure to select the “Recurring” tab if that's your wish. And, by the way, I'm still looking for 2-4 sentence long emails from listeners across the nation and around the world. What does the newscast meant to you.
