Finding purpose and identity as a young man today can feel overwhelming, with so many conflicting expectations pulling you in different directions. It's easy to push away potential mentors, especially when you're unsure if their guidance truly aligns with your path. That sense of being lost often comes from trying to navigate it all on your own, unsure of where you fit or how to move forward. Sometimes, purpose starts to take shape when you allow yourself to learn from others while still carving out a path that feels authentically yours. Judson Kauffman, entrepreneur, speaker, and CEO of EVRYMAN, has dedicated his career to helping men embrace personal growth and self-awareness. Drawing on his military and business experiences, Judson shares his journey from battling fear and identity struggles to becoming a leader. He shines the spotlight on the importance of modern rites of passage and building resilience in young men. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “I had no idea what I was going to do. I had some interests, but not a lot of confidence, not a lot of self-love. I kind of rejected the mentors who were available at that time, which started a tough stage for me.” – Judson Kauffman “I think it's very rare that a boy, young man, or man in our modern society feels total, unconditional love from those who raise him. I think that's the exception rather than the rule.” – Judson Kauffman “When we identify ourselves by something in the external environment, we moor the most important part of ourselves to a moving target—a target we have no control over.” – Judson Kauffman “You pivot. All of it happens because you're taking action. None of it happens by sitting on the couch and just wishing for it to take place.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Reflect on your own identity and how it is tied to external roles or achievements. Consider how you can cultivate a deeper sense of self beyond these external factors. Identify opportunities to facilitate meaningful rites of passage for the young men in your life, whether through intentional ceremonies, challenges, or experiences that mark their transition to adulthood. Examine your risk-taking approach and consider the difference between calculated risks and reckless gambles. Seek to balance self-belief with an understanding of what is truly within your control. Encourage the young men in your life to seek guidance and practical advice from trusted mentors, such as fathers or father figures, rather than relying solely on impersonal online resources. Find ways to support organizations that are dedicated to helping men and young men develop self-awareness, emotional depth, and a sense of purpose. Conclusion: Rites of passage and mentorship are vital for helping young men grow into self-aware, emotionally intelligent individuals with a strong sense of purpose. These practices encourage them to move beyond superficial achievements and focus on living with integrity and understanding. By cultivating these qualities, young men gain the skills to face life's challenges with confidence and clarity. This guidance doesn't just shape individuals—it creates stronger, more resilient communities.

Talking points: masculinity, culture, relationships What is it men are actually looking for? We know how media tends to define "masculinity", but what is it men are wanting to define? I sat down with MELD founder and fellow coach Owen Marcus to dig into some of this, because we've both found that what men really want and what mainstream narratives say they want are often two different things. Dig in, team. (00:00:00) - Why do you think “masculinity” gets so much attention in our culture? (00:05:44) - When are where do men feel most aligned, and why getting out of your head is important (00:12:07) - Where did mature masculinity go, and the balance of biology and culture (00:19:25) - What happens when men miss moments of maturation (00:27:03) - The value of being able to share what you're going through with others, and what gets in the way (00:33:27) - What is emotional physiology? (00:39:24) - Tools to get back into the body, and what about men who avoid the work for fear it'll make things worse? Owen Marcus resisted getting into men's work, and it was only because his pain exceeded his fear that he started his first men's group in 1995 in his clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. The conventional approach to men's groups began to feel inadequate for Owen and the deep, transformative work he sought. After completing his straw bale home in the forests of Idaho, he decided to take everything he had developed in his practice and worked to create a new model. By the middle of 2005, he had a thriving men's group group. What began as the Sandpoint Men's Group (SMG) grew beyond Marcus's wildest expectations. Nineteen years later, it boasts over 400 alumni and more than 50 active members. This journey led to the birth of EVRYMAN and now MELD, each step an evolution of his initial vision. Interview with Dan Doty / Founder of Evryman, Engaged Fatherhood LeaderHOSTED BY PAUL SULLIVANBefore the pandemic, Dan Doty was one of the best known advocates for helping men live better, fuller and more fulfilled lives. He was a founder of EVRYMAN, which led group retreats but was ascending to a near-spiritual level of support for men. He was as comfortable talking to Joe Rogan as he was on The Today Show. But all wasn't what it seemed for Dan as a father and husband. While he was helping other men, he wasn't helping himself. A journey into the woods, literal at times, changed how he approached himself and his work. Now he's ready for a comeback. Listen to how he changed and you can too. ---Get our free newsletter covering all things fatherhood delivered straight to your inbox: https://thecompanyofdads.com/thedad/

Certified through CTI and the International Coaching Federation, Cator also works for EVRYMAN leading retreats and facilitating their weekly GBTQ + men's group. Before stepping into the coaching world, Cator spent 20 years in NYC where he was a writer and editor at various publications. In this interview we start by taking a trip down memory lane, recalling our days connecting in NYC as part of the fashion world and nightlife glitterati. And we both share our stories of how we transitioned from that kind of work and lifestyle into the work and lifestyle we're each experiencing now. Next we describe the ways working with coaches helped and influenced us on our individual paths. We then get into the power of psychedelics and the importance of psychedelics integration. And we chat about the possibility of seeing the world through a spiritual lens. Then, we discuss men's work and the value of straight men working with gay men as coaches. We talk about gay men being a stand for being heart-centered, for and for being vulnerability, and for being in touch with our emotions. If you've been listening to the Authenticity Road Podcast over the last two seasons, you know that Jordan and I both came to this work via EVRYMAN and the somatic method they teach. For some time, though, I've been considering that there's more than one way for men to pursue their personal and emotional development. With that in mind, we're kicking off our third season of the show—our 51st episode—with a guest whose name may be familiar to many in the world of men's work: Boysen Hodgson. Boysen is a dedicated husband and dad. He's a fiercely optimistic advocate for men's transformation. And—if you've seen his name in your inbox—it's likely as a result of his role as Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA. I will own that I entered our conversation with a bias and more than a few preconceived notions about the ManKind Project, what they stand for, and how they do the work. I was delighted to have my views challenged and to learn quite a lot about this longstanding and impactful organization. Whether or not you're familiar with ManKind Project, you'll no doubt find much to think about in what Boysen has to say. So let's get on the road!About BoysenBoysen Hodgson is the Communications Director for the ManKind Project USA, a nonprofit organization hosting transformational programs and supporting men's groups serving over 10,000 men every week. He's the co-creator of the ManKind Podcast, a show that invites listeners to expand their perspectives on manhood, and he's the author of “The New Macho,” a credo for emotionally mature masculinity. I am most comfortable in nature and I'm committed to practicing and sharing work that brings our wildness and our love out into the open. I've been a 3 time guest on the Joe Rogan experience, I spent substantial time as a wilderness therapy guide, an inner city high school teacher, and directed and produced over 50 episodes of the hit hunting show MeatEater. As the visionary and founder of EVRYMAN, I have led retreats, hosted a paradigm shifting podcast, and had the fortune to give talks around the world on masculinity, fatherhood, and spirituality. Learning to be vulnerable with others can benefit your relationships, your health and your business. Owen Marcus is the cofounder of Evryman, a wellness company for men that seeks to help men connect and grow emotionally. The majority of men are raised to believe that showing vulnerability and emotion is a sign of weakness, and it's time that we destigmatize this. Getting in touch with your emotions can relieve chronic stress, strengthen relationships, and make you more creative and collaborative in business. We all learn and let our guard down through modeling and example, so the more you show up as your authentic self, the more you will attract emotional connections with others. Let your guard down, be vulnerable, and help create a culture of real connection!
DETAILS | Despite the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years (3.5%), data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau highlight, alarmingly, that more than 7 million men of prime working age (25-54 years old) are not working or looking for work. Why are so many men opting out of the job market, and what might get them back? To explore this question and, more broadly, what drives men, we sought out Dan Doty. Dan has dedicated his life to men's work and helping men find their edge. He helped instigate a global movement in men's work by founding EVRYMAN and Fatherhood Unlocked, leads wilderness retreats, guided meditations, and coaches executives. We sat down with Dan to explore shifting cultural and generational norms, extended adolescence, fatherhood, living in boxes and screens, education, decision-making, hard work, and the need to unlock our wild man! If you want to know what blocks men from finding their edge in this digital world, enjoy this revealing episode and share it with a friend. We are so glad you have joined us to convene around the virtual table where we center food as connection, storytelling as medicine, and pleasure as resistance! This episode features Certified Professional Men's Coach, facilitator, and teacher, Mike Sagun. Mike facilitates EVRYMAN's FUNDAMENTALS program -- a monthly virtual experiential intensive program that helps men develop and strengthen emotional intelligence and he leads men's retreats all over the United States. His work is simple: he helps men feel. Mike is currently launching a brand new retreat in Mexico in February 2023! This exclusive experience will be an opportunity for men to let go of energetic weight and reset their nervous systems. The impact of Mike's work has a ripple effect well beyond his clients -his work truly impacts families, friendships, and communities. Mike shares his special Golden Milk Smoothie recipe with us. This recipe is inspired by the traditional Indian drink made with tumeric, cinnamon, ginger, and other spices. These spices come together to soothe the gut and reduce inflammation. Mike transforms golden milk into a smoothie that can be enjoyed as a meal or after a workout. Mike also shares stories and history about his Filipino ancestry, learnings from his immigrant family, and what it was like growing up in the US and discovering the many facets of Self. Mike currently lives in the iconic little town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with his husband and pitbull rescue. When he's not working with men, he's probably tending to his plants and garden, moving his body, watching the Golden State Warriors, or in the kitchen cooking a meal. About this podcast: Each episode of This American Rice features one of our favorite co-conspirators who will share personal stories about the (sometimes messy) intersections of culture and identity, personal practices, and a delicious recipe we can all enjoy together. “I lost my brother last year… The thing that has driven me for so long - I was raised without anything - I would be damned if I wasn't going to be successful… My brother never really had that same thing. He was successful, but he was gentle, and he was just sweet, and he was always late for everything, and all kinds of things. We had totally different character sets… And now I'm questioning all those things that I had been working on.” - Jonathan DeYoe Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Jonathan DeYoe. Jonathan is an author, investor, educator, and financial advisor. One of the first things that Jonathan displays to the world is his work ethic. But, importantly, Jonathan also wears his love for his brother on his sleeve. It was really difficult for Jonathan when he lost his brother a little more than a year ago. And it pushed Jonathan to make a simple, yet noble, choice - to openly release his feelings. We're excited for you to get to know this great father, uncle, and brother. (2:40) Ashanti's introduction. (5:45) Jonathan and Ashanti look back on their first meeting, and Jonathan introduces himself, his work, and his relationship with his brother. (13:00) Jonathan shares the front if his mask - hard-working, smart, good habits. (14:00) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - funny, serious, caring - and both men discuss how they struggle to tap into the fun side of their personalities. (19:30) Jonathan shares the back of his mask - anxiety, fragility, afraid. (24:15) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - fear of failure, sadness, I worry a lot - and he expresses his love for his own brother. (30:20) Jonathan and Ashanti take time to process their grief and loss. Then, they celebrate the power of men's teams, like the Mankind Project, Evryman, and Sacred Sons. Sometimes you meet people who say interesting things. And sometimes you meet people who make you feel like the best version of yourself when you're with them. Our friend Aaron Musicant is someone who does both of those things. Jordan and Ettore first met Aaron in person on their EVRYMAN Foundations retreat in June 2022, and their connection was deep and immediate. In this week's episode, they talk with Aaron—a men's work leader, coach, and host of EVRYMAN's weekly Separation and Divorce drop-in group—about his journey to and within men's work, the EVRYMAN programs he's been a part of, healing journeys, marriage, relationships, dating, intimacy, and of course authenticity. Aaron has a knack for casually dropping wisdom bombs and revealing deep universal truths before you even notice he did it. In this episode, Ettore and Jordan sit down with Mike Sagun, a highly sought-after men's coach and EVRYMAN senior facilitator. We find out how Mike first got involved in men's work, and we hear about the exciting somatic experiencing work he's doing now. Along the road, the conversation touches on theater as a safe space, being a gay man in the world of men's work, the amazing ways our bodies heal themselves, and what it is that men really need. Contact Mike via his website www.mikesagun.com. During the episode, Mike mentions the following books and resources:Better Boys, Better Men: The New Masculinity That Creates Greater Courage and Emotional Resiliency by Andrew ReinerWaking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. LevinePeter Levine Somatic ExperiencingThe Male Brain: A Breakthrough Understanding of How Men and Boys Think by Louann Brizendine
In modern masculine culture, there can be a lot of pressure to shut down, suppress, or numb out emotions. But just like everything else we can experience, there's tremendous amounts of information in what we're feeling. This is why I'm such a big advocate for somatic practices—really feeling in your body what's going on—and cultivating emotional intelligence. And it's why I sat with EVRYMAN co-founder Owen Marcus; he's an expert on this subject. For more than twenty-five years, Owen Marcus has worked with men's groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, celebrate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy. As co-founder of EVRYMAN, he and his support men worldwide. As the New York Times describes it: “CrossFit for emotions.” Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger's Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others find their out-of-the-box solutions. However, it wasn't until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. Along the way, he met many incredible men – men who struggled to create the lives they wanted. Owen observed the patterns in his corporate management and Mindfulness Stress Reduction seminars and then began working with groups of men to give them something new: how to be their own man. — We are limited by outdated gender stereotypes, both men in their lack of access to a wide range of emotions and caregiving and women in their limited access to leadership and power. It's in our best interest to move towards flexibility and being instrumental or nurturant as circumstances require. This means we stop telling boys not to cry or be like girls and stop telling girls to be nice little ladies. We need to encourage girls to go into leadership and STEM fields of science and technology and boys into caregiving professions. The consensus of our experts is that boys and men are not permitted to show vulnerability. This prejudice shuts down even being aware of some emotions, which is why EVRYMAN and other men's groups begin with identifying body sensations. Asking for help may require being vulnerable, which fits in the “threat to masculinity” danger zone. This fear of being perceived as weak contributes to men's health problems and a higher suicide rate. Being shut down emotionally also inhibits men's intimate relations with people they love, one of the reasons why women in English-speaking countries are much more likely to initiate divorce than men. Femininity is seen by sexists as weakening to precarious masculinity and can increase the fear of intimacy. Progress certainly isn't a straight line upward, as evidenced in the sexist cult led by Donald Trump. George Simons finds in international surveys that about one-third of men support gender equality. Gayle Kimball is hopeful because Generations Y and Z tend to not limit themselves in regards to their gender roles or skin color. They have models to emulate as they assume more political power, learning from Nordic gender equality programs, Danish emotional literacy instruction for children, research on boy's development (like that done by Andrew Smiler and Warren Farrell), and supportive groups for boys like those developed by Jerry Tello and Ashanti Branch. Promundo and MenEngage provide models of how to involve boys and men in activism for gender equality for all human beings. Valeria Teles interviews Gayle Kimball — the author of “A Global Dialogue on Masculinity: 33 Men Speak.”Gayle Kimball, Ph.D. is an intuitive coach who teaches clairvoyance and healing webinars, and is the author of over 20 books. They include other titles for parents and kids: 50/50 Parenting, The Teen Trip: The Complete Resource Guide, Your Mindful Guide to Academic Success: Beat Burnout, Everything You Need to Know to Succeed After College and Climate Girls: Saving Our World. Other titles include: Essential Energy Tools: How to Develop Your Clairvoyant and Healing Abilities illustrated with videos and CDs, Mysteries of Reality: Dialogues with Visionary Scientists, Mysteries of Healing, Mysteries of Knowledge Beyond the Sense, and Quick Healthy Recipes. Gayle has been a college professor most of her life, she's also a ballroom dancer. She invites you to check out her YouTube channel. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.
Future of Work Sherpa Dan Smolen interviews Lucas Krump on supporting men in future work. Lucas is the CEO and Co-Founder of EVRYMAN, a platform of resources, groups, retreats, and more. It empowers men to lead fuller and more connected lives. Men struggle with their relationship to work as much as they do in expressing their emotions. What's more, men quite often craft identities--their personal narratives--around work and career. Now, emerging from a two-year pandemic, many men grapple with workplace disruption and figuring our their purpose. Main podcast segment begins at 2:49 In a wide ranging discussion, Lucas: Describes EVRYMAN and its value proposition. Starts at 4:15 Relates to why it is important for men to slow down--to relax, open up, and connect. Starts at 5:55 Provides his backstory as a young man and successful executive that led him to EVRYMAN. Starts at 6:58 Speaks to the emotional and behavioral disconnections that men suffer. Starts at 16:00 Discusses The American Dream and what motivates men, disconnected from work, to engage with EVRYMAN. Starts at 21:54 Offers insight as to how the pandemic impacted the future of work for men. Starts at 25:37 Supporting men in future work is important. And yet, Lucas is most often asked this basic question: what does it mean to be a man? His response: "EVRYMAN does not define what it means to be a man, That's a sacred space. Instead, what men are asking is: how do I be all of myself inside the [post-pandemic] workplace?" While this topic seemingly relates to men exclusively, it is in the interest of all of our listeners to be a part of this discussion. We all have male friends and family members. And they may benefit in life and in the future of work with new frames for expressing emotion and engagement such as those offered by EVRYMAN. Main podcast segment begins at 2:49 About our guest: Lucas Krump received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Kansas. He also earned an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management. Lucas lives and works in Hudson, New York. Hello hello! Hopefully this e-mail will give your brain a little break from withholding from all of the holiday-related shopping sale e-mails flooding your inbox…Today, I released the 12th episode of Undefined, featuring my conversation with Dan Doty, a coach and guide for men, organizations, and leaders. Dan's programs focus on a unique blend of wilderness expeditions, deep somatic awareness, and emotional maturity. Before venturing out on his own (semi-pun intended), he produced and directed a wilderness TV show called Apex Predator and founded a men’s group/community platform called Evryman. Dan has been featured on many other podcasts and media outlets, including Joe Rogan, the Today Show, the New York Times, Men’s Health, among others. I was introduced to Dan by my friend Jon Marro, thanks Jon :), who I interviewed on episode 3 of the pod (that interview took place inside a barn, so if you’re in the mood to hear a cow moo, queue it up). As you may guess, my podcast can be found where they’re normally found: Spotify, Apple, and wherever else you might listen. And I successfully figured out how to include a short clip in this newsletter (woot woot so tech savvy). In this episode, Dan and I share conversation about vulnerability—particularly male vulnerability—and how Dan returned to himself through somatic meditation. But what stuck with me most was our conversation about surrendering in the wilderness. I had an experience last summer when I camped alone in the Santa Cruz mountains. Even though I had pepper spray and a very blunt pocket knife with me, I slept in a vulnerable position. The walls of my tent easily could be cut through—or clawed through. My outdoor survival skills do not receive an A+*. And I regularly play out very vivid narratives of someone breaking into my house by climbing into my bedroom via a rope attached to my balcony spy style. And those narratives come up when I’m home. In a legitimate structure. Not a tent. But despite that, I somehow surrendered to the unknown, the uncertainty, and the darkness that fell over my camp site as the sun hid behind the mountains. I felt at peace. At home. And my mind finally fell silent. Ironically, as I proceeded up the coast and stayed in an airbnb (not a tent) in Arcata, California, my intruder anxiety ran rampant. Noticing this paradox, I questioned whether I have an allergy to modern society. It felt effortless to feel calm when surrounded by trees. Only when I removed myself from our human world, did I realize that the barriers to this peace that normally do exist only exist because of the human world itself. So of course it felt effortless to surrender to presence, to the beauty that surrounded me, when the human world grew farther away. And now that I’m back in my human world, the challenge I face is bringing this ease of surrender to my living room, to my office, to restaurants, to the 405 freeway, and to everywhere else I go that feels far away from the forest. I remind myself that this ease of surrender exists within me regardless of where I am. As Dan talks about in this podcast episode, he found surrender while meditating in a NYC building. While hearing the sirens and the traffic and the helicopters and the honking, Dan surrendered and returned to himself. Just as he did in the wilderness. On a related note, Tabor is now up to 10 minutes of alone time without having a full blown panic attack and destroying the house. Tabor is a dog, not a human. But a very emotional boy and an old soul. And for those of you who have met him, a “leaner.” All we know about his first year of life is that he spend it as a stray in El Centro, California. Perhaps Tabor is craving the wilderness. Perhaps he finds it easier to surrender in the trees, away from our human world. Just like I do. As his path to surrender regardless of his environment becomes easier, mine does too. Photo of him at the beach below. And, lastly, some fun things I’ve recently read:This fascinating article about Otzi the IcemanAnyone else feel the intensity of last week’s full moon/eclipse? Chani always knows best.Affirmation from Scientific Reports that adults who microdose psychedelics report health related motivations and lower levels of anxiety and depression compared to non-microdosers. Who’s down? I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, surrounded by love and family and friends. And, of course, I wish you all ease of surrender to quiet your minds and return to yourselves. Subscribe at becomingundefined.substack.com

I often hear men say that they don't have an emotional outlet, or that their partner is the only person who they can emotionally connect with. He has a somatic approach to coaching clients and focuses on helping men develop emotional awareness. Mike guides men out of their heads and into their bodies. Something close to my heart is helping men become more aware to their feelings and in touch with their emotions. There's so much stigma and societal pressure to be “manly” that it has hurt men from being their full and true self.In today's episode we dive right into those issues with Mike Sagun.Mike is a certified professional men's coach. He has a BA in Education and spent 10 years as a teaching artist coaching young people. He trained with Challenge Day and with Lincoln Center Education in NYC. In 2017, Mike delivered a TEDx Talk about the significance for young people to have trusted adults in their lives. Recognizing the impact and importance of deep emotional health propelled him into his coaching career. After graduating from Coaches Training Institute, Mike launched his coaching practice with the purpose of creating safe spaces for men to think deeply about themselves and to develop skills for living authentic lives. Since then, Mike has partnered with companies like DropBox, LinkedIn, Google, Kaiser Permanente, TATLAB, BBXX, and Saje Wellness. Mike also works with EVRYMAN, where he hosts men's groups and facilitates men's retreats. When Mike isn't coaching, hosting webinars, or developing ways to help men grow, you can find him with dirty hands, either planting in his garden or in the kitchen cooking with his husband, Jerry.
