Diane Mentzer is the Founder of Diane Integrates, LLC, where she serves as a business operations advisor and COO coach to help visionary CEOs and founders operationalize their businesses for growth. With over two decades of experience as a second-in-command, she supports top leaders in implementing incremental changes that enhance operations, reduce staff stress, and lower risk. Diane is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Catipult Business Coach and has completed the EOS Integrator Masterclass. In this episode: The momentum gained during business growth can fuel long-term sustainability yet spark internal confusion. Roles blur, operations become reactive, and the founder often ends up entangled in day-to-day tasks they hoped to escape. How can business owners regain clarity and scale sustainably without burning out themselves or their teams? Second-in-command Diane Mentzer recommends building clear systems around people and processes. This requires identifying your ideal lifestyle and vision for your business and reverse-engineering the operational structure to support these goals. Through role clarity assessments, time tracking, and delegation mapping, you can identify a second-in-command, prevent overlap, and empower existing team members. In this week's episode of Systems Simplified, Diane Mentzer, the Founder, Business Operations Advisor, and COO Coach at Diane Integrates, joins Adi Klevit to discuss building systems for operational clarity. Diane talks about integrating strategic planning and role-based KPIs, how to evaluate delegation and team structure, and why a COO may not be necessary for small businesses.

This weekend we are studying a hymn by Lutheran Pastor, Johnann Mentzer. Like Gerhardt whom we studied last week, Mentzer lived about 100 years after Luther and in a very difficult time, politically and religiously. Like Gerhardt, Mentzer was also familiar with suffering and tragedy. Yet, his faith in the Triune God and the joy which God's work for him instilled, shines through in his hymns. This hymn is no exception. Originally it included 15 stanzas, ten of which are included in our hymnal, but in two different hymns (TLH 30 and 243).   This hymn of praise is addressed to the Triune God (this is why it is found in the Trinity section of our hymnal), which can be seen in the reference to the Father (verse 2), the Savior Jesus (verse 3), and the Holy Spirit (verse 5). The words of this hymn are based in part on Jesus' words to the demonic, Legion after He delivered the man from the oppression of those evil spirits: “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” Then we hear the man's joyful response: "And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him" (Luke 8:39).  This hymn highlights the blessings which God has richly bestowed on us. He is our Creator and Preserver who is our "Guardian kind and tender." He is our Redeemer whose compassion led Him to come "down to ransom me" and "brought me from bondage" though the suffering (keenest woe) He endured on our behalf. He is our Sanctifier, Who gives "me among Thy saints a place" through the faith He works in our hearts, and gives us the power to live lives of good works to His glory.  All of this moves the Christian, the one who has come to know God's love which is shown in all these ways, to "be filled with gladness" even in the face of trouble and trial in this life.  Join us this weekend as we sing our praises to the Triune God for all the great things He has done for me! May the LORD bless your joyful worship this weekend!

"...Consistent with social learning theory, individuals tend to carry beliefs about money and money skills learned in childhood into their adult lives..."This week, I'm reading selected quotes from Money Beliefs and Financial Behaviors by Bradley Klontz, Sonya Britt, and Jennifer Mentzer, published in 2011.Reflection Questions:Have you spent time thinking about your childhood and the beliefs around money you were raised with?Which money script have you been operating in and how might you break those patterns?Reflection on Quote:Earlier this week, I was talking with a person with new fund development responsibilities.  She talked about her fears with asking for money.  Like almost everyone I've met in the field, her fears were directly related to her childhood.  It's a reminder that often we have to unpack our own beliefs around money before we can discuss generosity with our donors. As I read this research, I immediately recognized correlations to fundraising.  Those with money avoidance scripts can struggle to ask for donations. Those with money worship scripts tend to engage in magical thinking around one major donation.  Those with money status scripts can find crossing wealth classes intimidating when building a relationship with a more wealthy donor.  Those with money vigilance scripts may find fundraising work too all-consuming in their lives.  And, there are more correlations that you may have immediately thought of as well.  The good news is that, in my experience, once a fund development professional recognizes their own money scripts, they are able to move past them and develop new patterns in discussing generosity. Century 21 was an iconic New York off-price store that is now trying to return to its former glory. After filing for bankruptcy and shutting down all 13 of its locations, Century 21 reopened its lower Manhattan locations. "We are, in fact, an iconic legacy piece of New York, and we're happy to be back," Larry Mentzer, the retailer's chief operating officer, said on the Modern Retail Podcast. Mentzer spoke about the strategy with the reopening as well as plans for the future. The retail landscape has been transformed over the last four years -- and Century 21 has had to reckon with those changes. As part of the reopening, the company dramatically cut down its store size as well as the types of products it sells. Now, it focuses predominately on apparel and less on areas that didn't sell as well, such as home goods and kids shoes. "We really made a conscious effort to edit the assortment, keep it tight, turn faster, carry less inventory and show the customer really must-have designers and must-have items that you can't come back tomorrow and get it," he said. While foot traffic and sales have gone up and down over the last year, Mentzer says things are looking promising. "I can tell you that Q1, which was February, March and April of 2024, was better. And Q2, which we're just recently rolling into, is incredibly better. So we're excited about the summer," he said.

Century 21 was once known as the go-to New York City destination for bargain hunters looking to find a treasure amid racks of off-price clothes. But the pandemic had a negative impact on the company, which was overstretched with 13 stores, and it was forced to close down in 2020. But according to Larry Mentzer, COO of the newly relaunched Century 21, plans for the store's big comeback were already being laid out before it even closed. “Once the decision was made, that we needed to permanently close the business, it was probably that same day or the next day that the conversation started about reopening the business and relaunching the brand,” Mentzer said on this week's episode of the Glossy Podcast. “We are fortunate that we have passionate owners that just have a love for New York City, a love for retail and a love for the Century 21 brand, which was not only a New York City institution, but a family institution.” Mentzer and Judy Duzich, vp and general merchandising director of Century 21, joined the Glossy Podcast to talk about the store's grand reopening in May of this year. Lots of changes were made, according to Duzich, including paring the retail fleet down from 13 stores to just one.
