Did you know that the health of your feet impacts your entire body? Or that the shoes you wear daily could be contributing to more widespread pain—from your ankles to your back and beyond? Today's guest on my Feel Better Live More podcast is Jim Dooner, the Head Physiotherapist for The Foot Collective, a global community of health and movement practitioners on a mission to make a much-needed shift in the culture around feet and footwear.  Through their online training resources, in-person workshops, and a range of physical training tools, they aim to empower people on the journey of restoring natural foot function and balance and to make this process as fun and engaging as possible. In this incredible conversation, Jim explains the fascinating 'mismatch' between how our feet evolved and how we treat them in our modern environment. He introduces the concept of 'movement nutrition' - the idea that our feet, like our bodies, require proper nourishment through movement and sensory input, and explains why many of us are severely 'malnourished' in this regard. We explore the 'Five Fs' of footwear - a framework for understanding how our shoes should support rather than hinder natural foot function. Jim shares powerful insights about why conditions like plantar fasciitis, bunions, and chronic pain often stem from poor foot function and how these issues can be addressed through natural movement and proper footwear choices. Jim and I also discuss balance training and play-based movement. He explains how these simple yet profound practices can benefit everyone, from children to older adults, and why they're crucial for healthy ageing. We also delve into the cultural aspects of foot health, examining how fashion and societal norms have shaped our relationship with our feet, often at the expense of our wellbeing.  Throughout our conversation, Jim offers practical advice for anyone looking to improve their foot health, whether dealing with chronic pain or simply wanting to move better. According to Jim, it's never too late to improve foot function, and small changes can significantly improve overall health.  So, if you've ever questioned why we accept foot pain as normal or wondered whether your shoes might be affecting more than just your feet, this conversation offers a profound shift in perspective. Jim's message is clear - the path to better health could start right beneath your feet. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. In this episode, we're diving into a part of the body we often take for granted—our feet! As we age, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, foot issues like stiff joints, bunions, and plantar fasciitis often become more common. But what if we told you there's a way to give your feet the care they deserve? We're joined by James Dooner, a physiotherapist and founder of The Foot Collective, to talk about why foot health is so important and how we can strengthen and rebuild our feet with simple, effective practices. From going barefoot to using products like toe spacers, cork balls, and hacky sacks, James shares how these tools can help you restore natural foot function and mobility. Throughout the episode, we'll challenge modern shoe culture and explore why many of our footwear choices—despite being "good"—might actually be doing more harm than good. James advocates for minimalist, functional shoes that allow our feet to move naturally, and he explains how barefoot movement can unlock better foot health. If you've ever wondered how to treat your feet better, this is the episode for you! After listening, you'll never look at your feet—or your shoes—the same way again. All the foot care products James mentions are available at You Must Try It, and you can find links to everything discussed in the show. Key Takeaways: Feet are the foundation for movement but are often neglected. Many modern shoes, even supportive ones, restrict natural foot movement. Barefoot movement and minimalist shoes can help restore foot health. Foot health improves through simple practices like using toe spacers and introducing more texture to our daily lives.

Welcome to Episode 28 with Mac Lyon of Stories Told and The Foot Collective (TFC) Australia. This is an awesome chat. Mac is a truly passionate guy who finds happiness in sharing people's stories through film… and believes in the power of outdoor, bare-foot play! #PlayIsTheWay In previous years you may have seen Mac on Channel 7 as a news reporter, but these days he's enthusiastic about Stories Told and The Foot Collective Australia; a “health education company”. The Foot Collective Australia was started by Mac's physiotherapist friend James (“Jim”) Dooner, and aims to build strong, resilient and pain-free feet from the ground up. Jim believes that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and he provides people with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to look after their bodies. The Foot Collective Australia sell items such as balance beams, toe spacers, mobility balls, hacky sacks, ground living tables, shoes, socks, clothes and more… and you will also find a number of educational videos on their YouTube channel too! They have partnered with Reforest Now, donating $5 from every order over $50 to help restore Australian forests by planting one tree. The Foot Collective Australia is so passionate about the outdoors that they also have a few projects on the go - Rewilding In Suburbia and TFC Bush 1, to name two. Information from their website is as below: Rewilding In Suburbia Have the recent world events uncovered within you a deep yearning to connect more with the natural world? ⁣Are you tired of being surrounded by electronics, artificial lights or find it challenging to escape to the natural world? ⁣ ⁣We hear you! We feel it too, deeply.⁣ ⁣That's why TFC Foot Nerd Georgina Davies and her family have collaborated to bring this resource to you. After returning to Melbourne in 2018, after 4 years of country living, they made it a priority to create their suburban life still strongly connected to nature. They share these ideas with you... In a colourful 54 page pdf booklet, her family passionately share over 50 ways to “rewild” while living in suburbia. Including inspiring ideas, practical steps, embedded YouTube video links & suggested resources.⁣ ⁣ Reconnect to the healing powers of nature.⁣ TFC Bush 1 TFC Bush 1 is a property South-West of Brisbane where we can embrace the Barefoot Life and reconnect with nature in a deeper, more immersive way. We plan to eventually share this special place with our TFC Tribe. We'll be spending more and more time out here over the coming weeks and months and will be documenting the whole process along the way so stay tuned and check out @tfc.bush1 to follow along! So make sure you give this episode a listen and check out their website. Mac's enthusiasm shines through and will leave you inspired to live your best life… which, he believes, starts in nature. -- Thank you for watching. Nick St. Louis (@thefootcollective) is the leader of a Health Network called The Foot Collective. Along with the team of “Foot Nerds” they aim to help you reclaim responsibility for your health. Nick says that we don't really have a healthcare system anymore: it's simply a “sick-care” system, and I agree. There is little focus on providing people with the tools, resources, and knowledge to actually be responsible for their own health. This conversation is a piece of trying to change that. Nick spends a lot of time these days working as a Bitcoin Advisor through a new platform called Bitcoin Stoa. It may not seem obvious at first, but Bitcoin can be a great tool to begin to reclaim our health. Everything we do, including anything health related, is influenced by the financial system. With Bitcoin, the opportunity exists to reclaim some freedom from this system, and allow us to finally have the time, energy, and resources to take care of ourselves. At the end of the day, all of this comes down to taking responsibility for our own health, and that is the overarching theme of this entire podcast. There is a lot to learn and a lot to implement. It starts with being curious, listening, asking questions and discovering your own truths. You can stay up to date with everything The Foot Collective has going on through the website and through their IG page. You can also visit Bitcoin Stoa to learn more about Bitcoin. If there was something in this episode that spoke to you, please share this with a friend; this is how we grow together. I would greatly appreciate any comments, questions or feedback. If you could share this with a friend, that would mean the world to me. If you enjoy this podcast, I would be extremely grateful if you subscribed and left a short review on iTunes. What does the shape of your foot have to do with your long term health....?    Are you over looking how strong and healthy your feet are?   Well, true health doesn't preclude your feet, in fact they are the foundation for everything we do. Healthy, strong feet are probably the most overlooked part of us.   Nick's mission to is to raise awareness of what it means to be healthy. He heads up a community of health advocates helping people to build strong, functional and pain free bodies and they start with the foundations, your feet.   His journey has lead him deep into the "why" behind health and what it actually means to be string, healthy and pain-free.   If you are stuck in the "fitness loop" where pain equals gain and it's becoming tiresome, then listen up....the discussion on why fitness does not provide a long-term solution and why movement and health should be fun and engaging.   My favourite bits of this episode:   What you can do to build a strong healthy foundation Why foot strength and health matters How overlooking the fundamentals and foundations of healthy feet is condemning us to a painful life Why so many people are stuck in a loop that does not bring long term health and meaning to life Nick's definition of what  it is to be healthy and how you can shift your thinking on what it means to you to be healthy The Foot Collective and what a global community can achieve Defining your own goals and results to actually achieve a meaningful outcome     Connect with Nick and The Foot Collective:   https://www.thefootcollective.com/   https://www.instagram.com/thefootcollective/   Connect with your host Nick Quinton   https://www.instagram.com/thenoq/   Get coached by Nick https://www.elementalhealth.co/coaching

Have you ever thought about how important our feet are? And how they're connected to so many other parts of our bodies? This week's podcast is with Nick and Mike from ‘The Foot Collective’, a group of Canadian physical therapists on a mission to help humans reclaim strong, functional and pain-free feet through foot health education. The feet are an often neglected part of our body. If you’re experiencing hip, knee or back pain, your feet may be the cause. Nick and Mike explain that although there are many ailments that many of us just write off as something that we just have, or that we've inherited, in actual fact, there may be something we can do to improve these conditions. The truth is, that while we might have a genetic susceptibility, our environment and our lifestyles also determine what happens to our bodies. In our modern lives, we create an imbalance in our bodies by sitting too much and this can expose us to risk of injury. The Foot Collective give some brilliant tips on what we can do to avoid this. We also discuss orthotics and the damaging effects of wearing narrow shoes which squash our feet and talk about how we can help restore our feet to their natural state. After experiencing back pain for years, I found working on my feet made a huge difference. On Episode 218 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we catch up with Nick St. Louis of the Foot Collective. The Foot Collective is a group of Canadian physical therapists on a mission to help humans reclaim strong, functional and pain free feet through foot health education. Every human has 2 feet and most of those feet aren’t working like nature intended. Your feet form the foundation for your body – without a strong foundation we compensate and eventually run into problems. Most people Nick sees with dysfunctional (not working properly) feet don’t have foot pain. They have problems upstream – low back pain, hip imbalances, knee pain – and most of those problems are a result of a problem with their foundation. Spread the word to anyone you know and help create awareness of the importance of foot health. Telling friends and family about The Foot Collective means giving them the power to change their health and access quality information about their body for free. In this episode, I talk with Nick St. Louis, a physiotherapist from Ottawa, who also heads The Foot Collective (@thefootcollective on Instagram). In a short 6 months, TFC has reached thousands of people on IG and contributed to a massive shift in the way people view or tend to one of the most important body parts - the foot. We cover a tremendous amount of material in this conversation, including: the pitfalls of the footwear industry, why you should go barefoot more often, and things we can do to treat our feet better. I loved having Nick on the show. If you feel the same, follow the facebook page here for more updates and/or comment on what you would ask Nick himself if you had the chance to talk with him: fb.me/mentaljiujitsu
