Well, this was a big one!! The power couple of the United States Special Forces. Tom spent 20 years in The US Military and service in SFOD Delta ( known as Delta Force) and has gone from fighting in the Battle Of Mogadishu  ( where the movie Blackhawk Down came from) to helping people fight their inner demons alongside his wife Jen at allsecurefoundation.org . This was an amazing show talking about the journey from post traumatic stress to Post Traumatic Growth, and it was phenomenal to hear Tom and Jen's personal story as to how their relationship started. We spoke about the book “The Body Keeps the Score” finding your tribe and leaning on them,  and how to heal on the homefront.  Tom and Jen hold 4 day Special Forces veterans couple's retreats, which is absolutely brilliant because the secondary effect of post traumatic stress on the spouse or partner can be crippling to a relationship, and as humans are such social beings, we simply do not heal in isolation.
One of the most eye opening moments of the show was Tom speaking about his greatest healing moment and I won't spoil it for you, but it brought out his compassion and empathy to a level he had not known he was capable of before. Overall this was a fun, rare and enlightening talk with 2 powerful and successful individuals who are truly on this planet to help others. Mortal Kombat: The Journey begins was a direct-to-video animated video released in conjunction with the release of Mortal Kombat in theaters in 1995. It purports to be a sequel to the live-action film. For the story, producer Larry Kasanoff employed the services of his screenwriter for the live-action film, Kevin Droney. In Droney's script, we learn that "Mortal Kombat" is a tournament where warriors from Earth and warriors from the alternate dimension of Outworld compete for domination. Three warriors from Earth are chosen by Raiden, the God of Thunder: Liu Kang, a monk who hails from the Order of Light Temple, Lieutenant Sonya Blade, a United States Special Forces officer, and Johnny Cage,  a major Hollywood action star with actual martial arts skill. Their mission is to travel by boat to a mysterious island to fight the reigning champion of the "Mortal Kombat" tournament for five centuries,  a half-humanoid/half-dragon named Goro. However, to get there, they must first get through evil sorcerer Shang Tsung's minions, SubZero and Scorpio, as well as a horde of Nomads (aka Tarkatan warriors) protecting Goro. Along the way, Raiden describes the scenario and the backgrounds of the foes they are about to face for the benefit of those unfamiliar with the game.

General Thomas McInerney reveals that the Kraken is the nickname of the 305th Special Intelligence Battalion! As crazy as this sounds, nothing about 2020 has been normal, has it? Of course, this isn't all we have to talk about. A few weeks ago we heard about the U.S. Army seizing the Dominion servers from Scytl in Frankfurt Germany. What we didn't hear was that Delta force seized those servers from a CIA facility and may have taken on casualties in the process! I add much-needed context and credibility to these stories as I tie them together over multiple reports. "You gotta go do it. Lean into the unknown. We have this term, especially when I work with football players, called contact adaptation. There's a reason they had training camp prior to the season—it's not just so they could squeeze in extra games, it's so they can get used to hitting one another and what have you and that actually can decrease the risk of injury. Well, none of these coaches now have contact adaptation. They don't expose themselves to anything, which leads to a higher likelihood of breakdown. The dose makes the poison. You're all leaders in different contexts but you're not leading if you don't actually lead anybody and nobody can find you. You don't have to coach world beaters, you don't have to coach all day every day for 60 years—that kind of experience can be just as toxic as no experience at all—but you do have to lead somebody, you do have to create something. The core lesson there is you have to do. You can't just ideate and be like ‘Yeah, man, I'm a leader.' That doesn't work.” Brett Bartholomew is one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the world. He's worked with a diverse range of athletes across 23 sports, at all levels ranging from youth to Olympians. He's the author of the best-selling book Conscious Coaching: The Art and Science of Building Buy-In, which, as a disclaimer, I helped edit. Through his company, Art of Coaching, he also works with members of the United States Special Forces, Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, and universities to help develop more effective leaders and improve interactions and communication. This is mostly a conversation about coaching—not the technical aspects of strength and conditioning for runners, though we do touch on that a little at the end—but more about the interpersonal side of the craft: the importance of relationships, building buy-in, developing trust, and communicating well. Brett also told me his story about being hospitalized for disordered eating at the age of 15 and how that experience led him down the path of wanting to learn how to communicate with people more effectively and ultimately become a coach. We also talked about putting pressure on yourself, navigating chaos, managing different personalities and emotions, learning to be adaptable, and a lot more. Vigor Life Podcast · EP117: The Power of Communication and Why You MUST Get Better at It as a Coach w/ Brett Bartholomew   I finally got my good friend Brett Bartholomew on the show to talk about something we both feel very strongly about: the power of communication. Brett speaks on this on so many levels – including his must have book, Conscious Coaching and his program Bought In. Brett Bartholomew is a strength and conditioning coach, author, consultant, and Founder of Art of Coaching™. His experience includes working with athletes both in the team environment and private sector – along with members of the United States Special Forces and members of Fortune 500 companies. Taken together, Brett has coached a diverse range of athletes from across 23 sports world-wide—at levels ranging from youth athletes to Olympians. He’s supported numerous Super Bowl and World Series Champions, along with several professional fighters in both professional boxing as well as the UFC. In this episode we dive into the nuts and bolts of communication, why it's so important, and the reason you must get better at it— no matter where you currently are with your skill level. We explain why. Let's go.   IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN 3 key areas in life where communication is a must and why improving it will get you better results and give you a competitive advantage. Communication represents the very essence of human condition - and yet it's rarely taught OR evaluated so that coaches can improve. Poor communication can cost you results and your livelihood, and how to avoid having your job taken by robots in near future (listen to the predictions of how many jobs will be lost to this). Why you should be filming yourself speaking and communicating on a consistent basis and asking for constructive feedback. Only 6% of people do THIS and why you have an opportunity to put yourself in the upper echelon of coaches. The 8 components of the communication process. Brett breaks them down so you can hear how you can improve as a communicator. Context is KEY and why it's one of the most important parts of communication. We discuss HOW to practically change. Verbal, non-verbal, and para-verbal communication, the missing links that are preventing you from being the best communicator. Brett and I dive into examples of communication that you can use to improve how you communicate. Most people are so scared to fail that they avoid working on communication and receiving feedback – which turns into failure in coaching, sales, marketing, and because of that: business. Evolution of coaches and entrepreneurs and THE biggest mistake they’re making that are stopping them from improving. A powerful example/story of how lack of communication could have prevented a loss of thousands of lives, and how YOU may be losing results because of your communication. The important factors of online communication and strategies and tips to instantly improve it and differentiate yourself. Want to sell better and more? Follow these mindsets and strategies Brett and I share that will help you overcome the obstacle of being great at sales. Execute, expand, and evolve: how to take your career to the next level. And much more.   LINKS AND RESOURCES Brett Bartholomew: https://brettbartholomew.net/about/ Brett Bartholomew Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_brettb/ Bought In Course: https://courses.artofcoaching.com/signup/ Conscious Coaching: The Art & Science Of Buy In: https://www.amazon.com/Conscious-Coaching-Science-Building-Buy/dp/1543179479 Vigor Life Podcast (iTunes): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vigor-life-podcast/id1180256583?mt=2 Luka Hocevar YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ29YcBh-g6onRujX3wD_XA?view_as=subscriber Luka Hocevar Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lukahocevar/lukahocevar/   Thanks so much for joining me this week.

VHS Strikes Back E14 Dave and Chris are back reviewing the cult classic First Blood starring Sylvester Stallone. Originally a novel written by David Morrel. Morrell stated he was inspired to write the novel by hearing about the experiences of his students at the University of Iowa who had fought in Vietnam. The author also said "When I started First Blood back in 1968, I was deeply influenced by Geoffrey Household's Rogue Male." The character's name was derived in part from a brand of apples, which his wife brought home while he was struggling to think up a name for the character. In the DVD commentary for 'First Blood' Morell comments that one of the inspirations for Rambo was World War II hero Audie Murphy. Shortly after its publication in 1972, Morrell rights were sold to Columbia pictures, who in turn sold them to Warner Bros. This trend continued for ten years. The story passed through three companies and eighteen screenplays. Finally, it was sold to Andrew G. Vajna and Mario Kassar, who turned the character of Rambo into a more likable underdog who never killed anybody, instead of the angry, psychotic character in the book who goes on a bloody rampage and literally brings the Vietnam War to America. The role was offered to many celebrities like Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino until it reached Sylvester Stallone. The film was well-received by critics and saved Stallone's career. Plot Summary: John J. Rambo is a former United States Special Forces soldier who fought in Vietnam and won the Congressional Medal of Honor, but his time in Vietnam still haunts him. As he came to Hope, Washington to visit a friend, he was guided out of town by the Sheriff William Teasel who insults Rambo, but what Teasel does not know that his insult angered Rambo to the point where Rambo became violent and was arrested. As he was at the county jail being cleaned, he escapes and goes on a rampage through the forest to try to escape from the sheriffs who want to kill him. Then, as Rambo's commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman tries to save both the Sheriff's department and Rambo before the situation gets out of hand.
