Hello and welcome to The Breathing Body Podcast - My name is Flurina and I am your host, and I am so happy that you are here. In this episode I have a conversation with Internationally recognized Alexander Teacher, Jessica Wolf. Jessica is a pioneer in what she does and the founder of «Jessica Wolf`s Art of Breathing» - YES, there is an art to breathing - in her own words: «We breathe about 23,000 times a day. Anything we do that frequently, we want to do effectively. Breathing is as fundamental to life as the beating of the heart. Because we usually take breathing for granted, we tend not to realize the harmful effects that faulty breathing have on us, nor the freedom we gain by improving how we breathe. When we give ourselves permission to allow our breath to occur freely – rather than control it – we discover extraordinary vitality.» About Jessica: Jessica Wolf has been a teacher of the Alexander Technique for 45 years and is a Professor in the Practice of Acting at Yale School of Drama, where she established the first Alexander Training curriculum in 1998. She is also a certified Laban Movement Analyst. Jessica is the founder of Jessica Wolf's Art of Breathing, a certification program for Alexander Technique teachers based in her own technique, which integrates principles and procedures developed from her work in respiratory science and education. Jessica published the Art of Breathing: Collected Articles and created the first three‐dimensional animated film of the respiratory system, which has since been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and German. She is currently in development of her next book. Other faculty appointments include the Aspen Music Festival, The Juilliard School, and the Verbier Music Festival. Jessica coaches performing artists who appear on‐and off‐Broadway, and in films and television. Her work is recognized internationally and she travels giving workshops to performers, teachers, and healthcare providers. In this conversation we talked about: What led Jessica to explore the topic of breath in so much depth and become an expert and pioneer in her field! How important it is to be able to let go of breath, and «re-learning» to fully exhale The diaphragm! And why it is such a potent structure in our body How nature always regulates breathing and our job is it to get out of the way! What it means to develop a kinaesthetic awareness of breathing and why this is vital for life AND Jessica is talking us through a wonderful visual meditation - her ode to the art of breathing. In today's episode, we cover breathing with James Nestor. James has written for Scientific American, BBC, The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Public Radio and more, and is the author of the best-selling book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. Breathing incorrectly can have detrimental effects on your sleep, metabolism, inflammation, and even your lifespan, but what is the correct way to breathe, why is evolution working against us so we breathe worse over time, and what exercise can you use to train your body to subconsciously breathe correctly? What to Listen For Introduction – 0:00 How did James Nestor become so focused on breathing? How is evolution working against our breathing? What do people often get wrong about survival of the fittest and evolution? The Lost Art of Breathing – 11:10 Why is breathing not talked about by the medical community when it's so crucial to our health and wellbeing? How does breathing impact your sleep and what can you do to improve your sleep with your breathing? How does breathing impact your metabolism and how can you use your breathing to help you burn more calories? How are lung capacity and lifespan connected and how can you increase your lifespan? Breathe CORRECTLY to eliminate inflammation – 34:00 How is your breathing on a daily basis making your chronic inflammation worse and how should you be breathing instead? Why do you need to stop breathing with your mouth? Why do we feel better as humans when we breathe through our noses and not our mouths? How long should you inhale, hold your breath, and exhale to train your body to breathe correctly? How can correct breathing make you a better public speaker? Many people go through their entire lives without thinking about the way they breathe. It's one of those things that our bodies do automatically so it's easy to shrug off, but breathing is arguably one of the most important activities we do on a daily basis, so time should be spent trying to understand the best way to breathe. After recovering from pneumonia for the third time, journalist James Nestor took decisive action to improve his lungs. He questioned why so many humans - and only humans - have to contend with stuffy noses, snoring, asthma, allergies, sinusitis and sleep apnoea, to name but a few. James hears remarkable stories of others who have changed their lives through the power of breath. His deep dive into the unconscious and oft-ignored act of human respiration offers us all a way to breathe easier.
What does mindfulness mean to you? Like many of us, we have heard about mindfulness. I knew that it implied paying attention, opening our awareness to what is happening now, in the present moment, and accepting it without judging or trying to control it. Mindfulness is unquestionably linked to breathing, yet we all know how to breathe because it is a natural phenomenon and doesn't need the practice anyway? Practising mindfulness by using your breath as the starting point and the focus not only opens your awareness to the present moment, which is what mindfulness is all about. Instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on past actions, you are focused solely on remaining in the present moment. Whereby, reduce rumination (say goodbye to overthinking everything!) Mindfulness originates from ""sati,"" a word in the ancient Indian language of Pali, which roughly translates to present-moment awareness. Mindfulness is commonly integrated into yoga and tai chi practices, as well as meditations. There's mindful walking and even mindful showers. However, the most popular way to practice mindfulness is through meditation. You probably already know that meditation is a practice in quieting your mind. Breathing meditation So what is mindful breathing? Being aware of your breathing means observing and opening your consciousness to your breath: to your breathing in, and you're breathing out, without controlling or judging it in any way. How to break a bad habit Many of us have forgotten how to breathe well. By adulthood, we've picked up some unhelpful breathing habits. A baby breathes deep into its belly in a slow and steady rhythm. Stress can cause the body to go into a "fight or flight state, making us feel wired and ready for action. One of the physiological changes we see happen in this state is that our breathing rate increases. Holding your stomach in, something lots of us do subconsciously can also make your breathing shallow, rapid or irregular. Press rest Breathing is an autonomic bodily function that we can also control. All breathing techniques involve a variation of three elements: inhaling, holding the breath, and exhaling. Depending on the desired effect, the pattern changes. The 4-7-8 Method, used for deep relaxation, involves inhaling for a count of four, holding the breath for seven, and exhaling for eight. It may be easy to think – we all know how to breath, but many of us do it in a way that is not optimal for our health. This week's guest is science journalist and best-selling author of 'Breath, the new science of a lost art' James Nestor. The science shows breathing through your nose is key, as is not over-breathing – something we are prone to doing, particularly when stressed.James has been part of some extensive research which shows the damage that mouth breathing can do, and it is pretty startling. We talk about the optimal number of breaths to take per minute, how breathwork can be transformative when it comes to things like releasing trauma and how it can have a dramatic impact on sports performance too.We also talk about mouth taping at night - something I have done (in the face of ridicule!) for several years. Thankfully James does it too, and shows why it can be so beneficial. There are some really simple tweaks you can make after having listened to this episode which will benefit your overall wellbeing – and I'm excited to share this chat with you.**Follow me on instagram.com/simonmundie/Follow me on twitter.com/simonmundieSign up for newsletter via my website simonmundie.comadditional audio production by Frank McWeeny**DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Pranayama is a Sanskrit word that translates to energy control and through ancient breathing techniques, we can learn to harness this energy and apply it to daily life. When we work on controlling the breath, we are controlling our ‘Prana'. In all living forms prana flows through it, like the waves flow through the sea. Prana is our life-force, sometimes referred to as energy or chi. Where can prana be found? From the sun as its primary source, it lives in our food, trees, humans, everywhere. The way we think, act, move and breathe is determined by how much energy (prana) we are cultivating and how we channel it. Prana is the universal energy that is transported through the breath and fuels our energetical systems. If we can understand our breath, we can understand our mind and body. Similar to ‘You are what you eat', you are what you breathe. In this article I would like to show how accessible this knowledge can be and introduce the benefits of breathing techniques. Here I collect some old new thought readings on the science of breathing from Elizabeth Towne, Hereward Carrington and Captain R.D. Parker. How can you use your breath to expand your consciousness and change your reality? Becoming aware of different breathing techniques and understanding my breathing has changed my life. In this episode, I try to share some of what I have learned studying advanced breathwork and pranayama techniques. Breathing is everything. In reality creation, it may be the most essential element. The most fundamental and powerful way to connect with your subconscious and the superconscious is your breathing. For Beyond 50's "Natural Healing" talks, listen to an interview with Michael Grant White ( https://breathing.com/). He is a Optimal Breathing Coach, founder of My Oxygen Machine and Breathing.com. He teaches that during exercise, your muscles have to contract and work harder, which increases their demand for oxygen. The amount needed is much more than you are taking in. Your body first burns the existing oxygen in the red blood cells and when this runs out, the body turns to fermentation for its energy needs. Instead of using oxygen, the muscles convert glucose into lactic acid and this is when fatigue sets in. Learn from White about how to do oxygen-enhanced exercise that can leverage the body's already-existing system for oxygenating the blood before this happens. It is a scientifically proven phenomenon that's said to benefit the body by reducing the physical stress of exercise, accelerating recovery, helping you sleep, giving you more energy, and improving your metabolism. Danny Penman is considered one of the best meditation and mindfulness teachers globally, with 1.5 million+ copies sold of his best selling book Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World, and his materials used to teach schools, universities and hospitals around the world. As an award winning journalist, meditation teacher and best selling author, Danny has a unique perspective on the value and impact of meditation. Moreover, his personal discovery of the power of mindfulness is both shocking and inspiring. And let’s face it, the global mental health issues are escalating, due to the mounting stress-induing triggers in our lifestyles, and the lack of sufficient prioritisation for breathing, calmness and mindfulness. Mindfulness is clinically proven to be one of the most effective treatments for anxiety, stress and depression. It is also widely accepted that Meditation and time away from rumination frees our mind to think of new solutions, be more compassionate and have deeper levels of gratitude. For these reasons, and the fact that I (Steve) am on my own early journey of discovering a better life through meditation and mindfulness, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to get some direct coaching from THE meditation guy. Aired Wednesday, 14 March 2018, 8:00 PM ETDr. Danny Penman – The Art of BreathingIt’s something that we do thousands of times a day without thinking about it. We do it from seconds after birth until our final moment of life. It gets faster when we exercise and slower when we rest. We may hold this underwater and for certain medical test. Extraordinary beauty has been said to take this away. This gift of life is our breath and learning to use it mindfully can promote health, stress reduction, a deeper understanding of ourselves and peace. My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Dr. Danny Penman, knows well the value of both breathing and mindfulness. Danny is a feature and comment writer for the UK’s Daily Mail and has worked for The Independent and the BBC. He is co-author with Mark Williams of the international best-seller Mindfulness. He joins me this week to discuss his new, beautiful and breathtaking book, The Art of Breathing: The Secret of Living Mindfully.

You know that terrible feeling during a workout where your heart rate is out of control, you breathing is shallow and rapid and you feel like you are going to hyperventilate? What if there was a secret "hack" to getting around that? On Episode 206 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are joined by the legendary Rob Wilson (for the 5th time) to talk about The Art Of Breathing during a CrossFit/high intensity workout. Just like most other things we do in the gym setting their is an optimal way to breath during exercise and those who master it have a distinct advantage over their competitions. Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they own and operate CrossFit Virginia Beach. In addition to working with the Power Speed Endurance team Rob is also a member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Rob’s main sport background is youth martial arts including Jeet Kune Do (the philosophies of Bruce Lee), Judo, Muay Thai, and Maphiliindo Silat and Kali. Like many coastal kids Rob grew up surfing and skating as well and developed an affinity for the ocean and Nature at an early age. Rob Wilson is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a therapist one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often understanding. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential.
