We are going to learn what it like to serve 31 years in prison and then be subject to our stifling parole system As a desperate 17yo juvenile our guest William committed a robbery and he was tried as an adult that led to a 31yr long incarceration in the state of California. Today if he committed the same crime he would likely not have been sentenced as an adult or served no more than seven years. Now out of prison in 2019 and having gone through parole, William is passionate about helping others and is living his purpose as the voice of system-impacted individuals that are now in a re-entry program. His experience with law enforcement, prison and parole, qualifies him to create a responsive narrative to reform system-based policies and laws. Here is some more info about our guest He's been appointed to the Reentry Council as: The Sentencing Commissioner; resides as the co-chair on the Legislation, Policy, and Practices subcommittee; and a member of the Direct Services subcommittee. Join Will and Jon as they interview Hyperlite Mountain Gear co-founder and CFO, Dan St. Pierre, to discuss "Heartfulness!" Dan is the co-founder and CFO of Hyperlite Mountain Gear, which is the leader in ultralight backcountry gear. Under the design philosophy of essentialism, Hyperlite manufactures and sells backpacks, tents, and accessories that are used from the Appalachian Trail to Mt. Everest and about anywhere in between. But Dan was not always in this industry. He graduated from Penn's Wharton School of Business and spent his twenties working in corporate finance in New York City and Boston. Slowly disheartened by a corporate existence, and hearing the faint calling for adventure. Dan then spent his thirties working seasonally as a waiter, traveling, studying spirituality, and writing. He spent over a year in India practicing yoga, meditation, and heartfulness, and he has written a few million words in the pursuit of spiritual understanding and expanded consciousness. He then spent his forties starting and building both Hyperlite Mountain Gear and a family while continuing to refine his spiritual practice and understanding. He recently finished a book titled All One: The United Anatomy of Being, (which for full disclosure is not yet published). His parachute disconnect malfunctioned and repeatedly drug him under the icy Atlantic Ocean while he awaited rescue. With lungs full of salt water and severe hypothermia he was rescued by a navy H-60 Seahawk helicopter. After over a dozen surgeries, two years of intense rehabilitation and overcoming prescription drug addiction he returned to flying F/A-18E Super Hornets and then had some more dramatic twists to his story. On this episode of Return to Base we are pleased to present former U.S. Navy SEAL Commander and the co-host of the Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast, Job Macaskill.Jon served for 26 years in the Navy, mostly in the SEALs, before transitioning in 2020 and embarking on his civilian journey. Along the way, Jon's journey was altered by a global pandemic and coming to the realization he was working in the wrong industry. YET, Jon followed some sage advice and got a lot of help along the way before realizing that what he was MEANT to do was something he ENJOYED doing. The rest, as they say, is history. While transitioning, Jon was introduced to meditation by a therapist. Skeptical as he was, he gave it a shot and stuck with it. This practice opened his eyes to the concept of mindfulness and the benefits of living in the present. Before long, he partnered with a New York hippie to found the Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast which he airs LIVE on LinkedIn, and in the future, YouTube. Talk about a bold move.To learn more about Jon and the MtM podcast visit https://mentalkingmindfulness.com/Check them out on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/mentalkingmindfulness/Connect with Jon on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonmacaskill/ and https://www.linkedin.com/company/men-talking-mindfulness-podcast/Finally, to check out the work Jon is doing with Dr. Theresa Larson and the Mindfulness and Movement Experience, visit www.movement-rx.com/mtm This episode was made possible in part by the good AMERICANS at Black Rifle Coffee Company.
This week I sat down with former Marine Corps Officer, Combat Veteran, and the current founder of Movement Rx (MRx), Dr. Theresa Larson. Dr. Larson has set and achieved some hefty goals throughout her life to include becoming a professional softball player, winning the Body-for-Life Championship, and becoming an entrepreneur when she and her husband founded MRx in 2013. Dr. Larson is also an advocate for the Challenged Athletes Foundation's military and 1st responder division, Operation Rebound, and is on the Advisory Board for The Mission After, a non-profit focused on delivering digital health and wellness solutions to veterans across the globe. Dr. Larson and I discuss the connection between mind and body and how mindfulness has changed her perspective on what true wellness and fitness looks like. Dr. Larson was very forthcoming when discussing some of the challenges she's faced along her journey, to include her experience with an eating disorder and the loss of her mother at an early age. I really enjoyed my conversation with Dr. Larson and hope you get from it as much as I did. Check out the below links to find out more about Dr. Larson and MRx. Wow! So much goodness here! An amazing conversation led by Will with cohost Jon and a bunch of recently transitioned or soon to be transitioning military members - from almost all the services - we had Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps represented... we even had some amazing folks who'd never served before chime in with how important networking is! Thank you to Joe and Meghan Barnard, Theresa Larson, Kristen Wheeler, Lauren Thew, Clint Blankenship, Clint Musgrove, Michael Allen, James Corbett, Karen Charchan, Jeff Bayless, Jennifer Tracy, Josh Duntz, and Matt Myers for joining - either in a speaking role or simply there to support! So much covered today, from feelings of guilt and betrayal to pride and ignorance to anxiety of the unknown. So much good advice given too - from planning well in advance to networking to doing some deep introspective work to giving yourself grace! Wow... all I can say is Wow!
