Today's podcast is with Alex Kanellis. Alex is the founder of Landmine University. He is a former state champion wrestler, Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year (Football), and University of Iowa football player. He has been a scholastic strength coach, wrestling and football coach, as well as having spent time as a performance coach for Weck Method. Currently, Alex's focus is on training youth wrestlers, as well as his work with Landmine University. Strength training for athletes is fundamentally basic. The powerlift variations, as well as Olympic lifts recruit a large amount of muscle mass and are fundamentally stimulating. At the same time, with the potential to be over-used, “functional” training has emerged, offering light-weight movements with high demands for balance and coordination. Landmine oriented training movements offer a happy medium in a high potential for force application, a rotational and arc-like orientation, as well as short learning curves (unlike the longer learning curve of the Olympic lifts). On today's podcast Alex goes into his experiences that brought him into landmine training, and how he uses the method with athletes. He also gets into the advantages and unique aspects of the method, and touches on the transfer points to a number of athletic movements and practices. Alex touches on isometric landmine variations, as well as gets into GPP methods for young athletes in general, and what we can learn from the athleticism of wrestling and combat sports. What if you just started with more stuff like landmine cleans, or it's a lower bar to jump over, it's more athletic then maybe in high school or later (bring in Olympic Lifts)." - Joel Smith "If we are going to spend those skill points as a coach who's not their sport coach, it does feel really satisfying when just at least a couple of those skill points overlap with what they're working on in their sport." - Alex Kanellis" "Yeah, but it makes you play differently, and it gives you something. Driving Healthy helps us lead by example, and take advantage of time off. Shawn gave me lots of tips before we took our 3800-mile 4-week road trip across the country. Longest road trip: well over 1000 miles Average Road trip: some days working outreach I might drive 350 in a day Eating Healthy - nutrition is huge Know your body's needs and what causes problems. I stay with simple things that I can extend throughout the day. Meat cheese and nuts work great for me. Drink things that help you hydrate and feel better Stop and do your lunch break and bring a game, frisbee, or soccer ball. Pee breaks also help to get you up and moving Bring a cooler of healthy snacks and food with you. Staying fit - Donnie Thompson bowtie for postural correction Keep exercises - band pull-a-parts Doing the old rocky routine with the lat pulldown machine in the truck Use a lacrosse ball in a tube sock for mobility Lifting heavy before starting a long drive gave me soreness that encouraged me to move. Mile markers: I would see a mile marker and think for this mile I am going to focus on getting a really good core contraction. Then I would squeeze the butt for the next mile. Dr. Jannine Krause returns to the show to discuss her unique blending of functional fitness and functional medicine. That's right, Jannine treats patients on her acupuncture table and then they head right across the room to see how their bench press improves in real time!  One tip Jannine gave me a couple years ago has been a huge benefit to my training. It's called “positional parasympathetic breathing,” and entails lying down after a high intensity workout for 5-10 minutes with your legs elevated, then engaging in some nasal diaphragmatic breathing to help bring the body into a parasympathetic state after the fight or flight experience of a high intensity workout.  In this show, Jannine talks about exercises to balance the body and prevent injuries (like my recent high jump injury!), including a little balance test you can do right now to determine if you have a left-right imbalance. She also talks about the cutting edge healing technique of “body tempering” invented by powerlifter Donnie Thompson. This strength prep or rehab technique works by getting the muscles and tissues out of their adhesive or “sticky state”, which is due to heavy loads of weight being placed on the body. These heavy loads of weight stimulate the proprioceptors and mechano-receptors located in tissues, which then change the signals to the brain and trigger the brain to relax the muscles that are under this heavy load. Commonly, loads are placed for 3-5 minutes in certain areas of the body, like hamstrings for example, or trigger points/neuromuscular junctions are targeted. For more info, check outBody Tempering. TIMESTAMPS: If you have pains or aches dominating one side of the body more than the other, it's because you have some nervous system imbalances. [01:30] Are you overstretching? Overdoing it? [05:24] Sometimes imbalances are signaling back up to the brain. Have you tried to balance your technique?  [08:31] Each of us, athletes or couch sitters, need to pay attention to our imbalances in standing, sitting, or walking. [12:12] There are some exercises you can do right away when you see that you have an imbalance. [16:52] Brad describes what it feels while doing the high jump. [18:50] Sometimes athletes are focusing on just one part of the body when they really need to think about all areas in order to stay balanced. [21:38] Dexterity is important to consider.  Some people have trouble with feeling things or even carpel tunnel. Squeezy balls are helpful for both hands and feet. {26:19] What is body tempering? It's a game changer. [31:01] There are some good dexterity and balance exercises to get you back after therapy. [40:31] Parasympathetic breathing is done after you have had a high-intensity workout. It's a big step beyond the cool down. [44:21] Janine talks about her practice. PowerCast episode originally released on Jul 8, 2017. In this bonus episode recorded this week, Mark talks about the first Keto style diet he was ever given. He was a teenager, and the coach who gave it to him only let him have meat and water at first. This coach (Ron Fedkiw), is a brilliant mathematician, is now Stanford professor, and has an Oscar for special effects technology. Back in the day, his bench press stats were beyond impressive.  We talk about why some diet strategies seem to work better at certain times and for certain people. Mark has lost roughly 35-40 lbs recently, and talks about the conditioning workouts he's been doing lately. Finally, we reminisce about the time in 2011 when Donnie Thompson trained at Super Training during his quest to break the all-time multi-ply squat and total records. Included at the end of the episode is a short interview what was recorded at the time. In this new segment Coach Joe answers a question about coaching athletes to squat.  In many coaching circles coaches teach their athletes to drive through their heels.  In Joe’s mind this is a que gone terribly wrong.  The facts are that most new athletes do not have the tools to squat properly.  The culprits are usually poor ankle flexion, a weak and/or underdeveloped posterior chain, and in general, poor body awareness.  A quick fix in the beginning, in some cases, is to ask the athlete to drive through their heels. Joe discusses how driving through the heels should be thought of as a corrective cue, not one to promote the most optimal movement pattern possible.  Joe is not alone in this line of thinking.  Joe discusses a conversation he had with Donnie Thompson, linked here.  In the talk Donnie talks about why the cue works for many people, and also why it is not the most optimal cue to promote athleticism.  Also, within the youtube clip Donnie discusses other nuggets regarding foot maintenance. Brian Mackenzie makes a similar point in a recent instagram post, linked here. Dr. Danny and Coach Joe Discuss Evaluating, Improving, and the Importance of a Quality Front Rack On Episode 33 of the Doc and Jock Podcast Discusses Front Rack Fixes The Front Rack is a position often utilized in CrossFit and is definitely required if you have Weightlifting ambitions. Bottom line is that if you are into barbell training the front rack is a fundamental shape, that when achieved, can be a building block to establish many quality barbell movements, including the Front Squat, Cleans, Presses, Push Presses and Jerks. Before the boys discuss fixing your front rack they talk about the recent flooding in Columbia SC where Coach Joe lives. The front rack discussion first begins with why and how folks experience poor positioning with this shape and why limited positioning with this shape can negatively affect your performance.  In particular we see limitation in the ability of an athlete to get into an optimal front rack because of over development of upper body musculature, limited external rotation and flexion in the shoulder. According to Dr. Danny the two areas of focus should be the shoulder and the thoracic spine. If your T Spine is so lacking in ROM and a safe front rack cannot be achieved athletes should look to the goblet squat.  To break up areas of restriction in the T-Spine it’s also a good idea to promote extension by laying on a lax ball and getting some downward pressure.  Joe also brings up Donnie Thompson’s tempering to strengthen the back and a way to gain neutrality in the spine.  Dr. Danny counters with a discussion about paying attention to the rib cage and diaphragm. The conversation then moves to the shoulder.  In order to have a quality front rack your shoulder needs to do two things, flex (bring your arm straight up and in front of you) and externally rotate (turning your palm up). If your shoulders have both of these qualities you can not only take a wider grip with the bar, but when you receive the bar in the clean you will be able to take the load throughout the shoulder and chest, not hold the bar in your hands. The boys continue their discussion about grip width and why taking a wider grip is more optimal but why you may want hold off to save your elbows. Danny and Joe then provide insight on how to achieve more external rotation pre workout. Danny believes the best mobility drills look like the exercise you are trying to achieve.  Joe then discusses using PNF as a means to gain positioning pre workout. The guys tie the conversation up with a discussion about why being able to do maintenance on yourself is so important.  It’s cheaper, quicker, and you end up learning more about yourself through the struggle. Joe then enters into a conversation about why he coaches his novice athletes to work their front racks with an open palm.  In Joe’s mind the benefit is forcing the athlete to utilize their legs to move the bar overhead, not the hands.
