Fran Leeman is the founding pastor of LifeSpring Church in Plainfield, Illinois. Along with his wife, Linda, and a few good friends, he has led this church for over 30 years. Fran is also the founder of New Life for Haiti. Fran's book, The Everybody Gospel, chronicles his journey from a conservative evangelical mindset to embracing a bigger and more beautiful God, a richer understanding of the gospel, and those in the LGBTQ community. In today's episode we go deeper into the journey of Pastor Fran and the congregation of LifeSpring Church as they thoughtfully and prayerfully dug deep into the clobber verses in the Bible to see Jesus in those sacred scriptures that seemed to exclude the LGBTG community. Pastor Fran's book, The Everybody Gospel is an account of their brave journey to step out of what they had been taught and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through the scriptures resulting in choosing inclusion of all God's children into their church. When Abe Gurko packed his bags and moved from New York City to Hollywood, he wasn't leaving a career in the fashion industry to chase the usual dream of becoming a movie star. “I wanted to be a mechanic to the machine called celebrity.” He cultivated his skill set working with arguably the coolest woman in Hollywood, Carrie Fisher and acquired an intimate knowledge of the writing process and had a front row seat to the business of show. His first documentary Louder: The Soundtrack of Change airs on MAX, October 17 and he is in development on Wolf's Song, a recently discovered piece of music written in a concentration camp as a song of resistance to the Nazis, that is being transformed into a clarion call for social justice today. Abe is living happily ever after in La La Land with his husband, Shlomi and their dog Alfie. Today, I focus on comments and wisdom from the Bible Project Podcast regarding the Character of God and how we are active participants in our lives and our choices. In today's episode I focus on the events of Hurricane Helene and the question many of us ask during times of devastating trauma, "Where Is God?" As a country is devastated and lives are lost and we know it will take a hard time to recover, where is God? How do we move forward and handle our own trauma? There is a special section of this podcast dedicated to anyone who has or is feeling suicidal. Please listen to the beginning of this podcast for my reflections. Mentioned in today's episode! Her memoir, Gay with God, Reclaiming My Faith, Honoring My Story has just been released! Her podcast, GAY with GOD! can be found wherever you stream your podcasts. Midge specializes in helping her LGBTQIA+ community in their coming out and faith journeys. Her main focus is to stop gay suicides by educating people wounded by the church that they can be in relationship with the God of their understanding and that God does and has always loved us, just as we are created to be. To that end, Midge is very involved in her parish, The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Midge and her wife, along with their fur babies, enjoy spending time at their mountain cabin, hiking, and being with their friends. In this episode we talk about the Gay with God Book Club, and how whether or not the LGBTQIA+ community is beloved by God. Do you like a good book club but hate going back out after you get off of work? Find out how you can be selected for the next upcoming zoom edition of the Gay with God Book Club! I am excited to share the untold stories, some pictures, and answer your burning questions from my memoir, Gay with God, Reclaiming My Faith, Honoring My Story.
