A backbone's role in a collective is often to facilitate collaboration among partners and help the group make progress toward a shared goal. This can be a complex challenge, as the backbone doesn't hold formal authority or decision-making power. Instead, it must rely on its central coordinating position to influence, build alignment, and advocate for the collaborative's mission. In this new podcast episode, we explore how a backbone can influence partners to take action, without holding a position of authority. We talk with Susan Dawson, the founder and former CEO of E3 Alliance, and author of the new book, Changing Education Systems: Wisdom Gained by E3 Alliance in Driving Effective Change Using Data and Collaboration.Through her years at E3 Alliance, Susan learned many ways a backbone can influence change. In this conversation, she shares the necessary “best-ats” or core competencies a backbone team needs to activate multiple layers of influence, including:- Delivering results- Building relationships of trust- Having the best data- Facilitating stakeholders with diverse missions and perspectives- Being doggedly persistentThe discussion also dives into powerful examples of E3's work, showcasing their own dogged persistence to deliver meaningful results in education for children and families in Central Texas.Resources and FootnotesBook: Changing Education Systems: Wisdom Gained by E3 Alliance in Driving Effective Change Using Data and Collaboration by Susan DawsonE3 AllianceE3 Alliance Data and Trends PortalThe University of Texas at Austin College of EducationThe University of Texas at Austin Education Research CenterMore on Collective ImpactInfographic: What is Collective Impact?Resource List: Getting Started in Collective ImpactThe Intro music, entitled “Running,” was composed by Rafael Krux, and can be found here and is licensed under CC: By 4.0. The outro music, entitled “Deliberate Thought,” was composed by Kevin Macleod. Ruba brings a wealth of corporate strategy expertise, and a track record enabling successful device commercialization and market access. All right. Welcome to the show, Ruba. I'm so excited to talk with you today. [00:02:16] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Thank you very much, Lindsey. I'm excited to be here. I appreciated the invite. [00:02:19] Lindsey Dinneen: Sure. Oh, absolutely. I'm so glad we got connected. So I was wondering if you could start by telling us just a little bit about yourself and your background and maybe what led you to medtech. [00:02:32] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: So, I mean, I've spent the last 20 years working explicitly and specifically focused on medtech, dedicated to commercialization of really cool technologies that have a profound impact on patients' lives. And I'm grateful for the opportunity this career gave me to work on some really disruptive technologies and collaborate with some brilliant minds across the industry. I had a front row seat to seeing how the incredible impact to the medtech industry can have on transforming healthcare. So what brought me into it, I initially wanted to go to med school, like a lot of people. I covered all of the basics and then graduated. And then, I was doing preclinical research at UT Southwestern Medical Center. And I completed all the requirements for pre med the summer before, took the MCATs, did all of it. The summer before I was supposed to start, decided I had a soft heart and that may not be the best decision. And so there was a moment there of, I'm going to start with research and kind of see where I go. And ended up working with a lot of reps and connected with a lot of people within the medical device industry. So I started looking for jobs 'cause it felt like the perfect opportunity with the intent that the pre med thing was this sincerely and authentically with a focus on wanting to help patients, right? And the beautiful opportunity med device provided me is that it enabled me to do that without the risks and consequences tied to direct patient care. That soft empathy piece or the super empathy piece on mine wasn't at risk from that standpoint. So I was doing research at UT Southwestern in the physiology department, interacting and engaging from a folks working on trials perspective and then medical devices that were being used at that medical center and then started applying for jobs within medtech. Took one managing preclinical research way back when at Orthofix, transitioned and got promoted to running clinical affairs there, and then got promoted again and managed clinical affairs, government affairs, health economics outcomes, research and reimbursement for that organization. And that was a really long time ago and then moved into different career roles from there. But that's the story on that one. [00:04:52] Lindsey Dinneen: Oh, that's incredible. So, okay. So let's bring it up to present day, and you are doing some fractional work and I know that you have, I'm sure quite a full schedule just in looking at your LinkedIn profile. I could see that you're extremely active in many avenues and I just love to hear some of what you're up to these days. [00:05:13] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: So I'm currently leading market access strategy and advising for a diagnostics company called RizLab Health, and they have a portable hemo analyzer that's really focused on enabling access for patients with the greatest healthcare disparities, which is really cool. I'm the managing partner for MediStrat360, so it's a consulting firm hyper focused on just medical device and accelerating that journey from concept to market for disruptive groundbreaking medical devices. So those are the two things that I'm currently focused on, and then I have some senior advising positions for quality regulatory and clinical for a couple of additional companies, one that's focused on sleep apnea devices. And that one's under an NDA. And then another diagnostics company. So I've got four fractional-- with RizLabs is to focus on device commercialization, go to market strategy. And then the focus for some of the other ones very much centered around regulatory clinical quality. [00:06:13] Lindsey Dinneen: Okay. Yeah. So, so with that you mentioned that you were doing this preclinical research and decided to switch gears a little bit. And now you've got such a, an amazing breadth of skill sets and experience and expertise. And I'm kind of wondering, within medtech, what was the journey like to learning, all these different aspects that now you are such an expert in. For example, say regulatory. [00:06:43] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: I think for me, because you don't see that often, you see a lot of folks that start in one specific area with respect to medtech, and they develop a pretty comprehensive depth in that area over the span of 20 years. I would argue that I've had an extraordinary career and that has not been my journey. And that has not been my journey mainly because I took roles within companies that were either smaller or midsize, and there was always a willingness to proactively volunteer, not even volunteer, but proactively volunteer, raise my hand when people left or when certain gaps existed that needed to be filled, and then proactively choosing to look at issues that were going on within an organization more holistically outside of my department. So just because my roles and responsibilities said I covered clinical didn't change the fact that I paid attention to a dynamic that said, there are reimbursement challenges that are happening. One, we were getting coverage and pushback from an insurance company tied to certain devices, engaging with an industry coalition to try and get some of those policies overturned, and recognizing that the information that I gained as a result of that experience identified certain gaps for the evidence portfolio for clinical affairs. So how did that happen? I think that happened because I had a habit of, I'm choosing to pay attention to what the organization needed and choosing to see the links for the existing roles and responsibilities that I had, and how they bridged across the organization. And then being proactive, quite frankly, about when I was really dedicated to every company I worked for and readily dedicated to the mission that they had and choosing to take roles that I may not have been ready for or may not have had full core competencies for in an effort to support that organization. So in a lot of cases I took it on and I was, I became an obsession and I learned everything I could and I addressed certain gaps by bringing in additional expertise with the intent that we still got the organization's mission accomplished in spite of the deficiencies or gaps or turnover that was going on. [00:08:59] Lindsey Dinneen: Wow. Yeah, that's incredible. I love that. You have been so curious and eager to learn and willing to step outside your roles and responsibilities and seek to understand what the organization needs. I'm sure that really helps now with your consulting work, because you're probably way better able to, and equipped to, find those gaps that you mentioned in a company's strategy or whatnot. And so I, what a strength to be able to bring that breadth of knowledge. [00:09:34] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: It's interesting when clients approach me about a dynamic that says, "We have this challenge." It is a prism where that challenge ties to different additional facets of the organization or facets of their market commercialization strategy. So we end up providing value and feedback that's not only solving the problem they came to us with, but providing recommendations that have an impact across different facets within that organization or within that product commercialization strategy. And I'm telling you it's, it is, that is one, I would argue, differentiating value prop that I bring to the table on the consulting side is offering that feedback where it's not it's not one sided. It's got depth to it and it touches different dimensions because we're not looking at it just within the scope of the problem as it's presented. [00:10:23] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah, absolutely. That's awesome. That's great. That's something very unique to be able to offer. And so, you know, that curiosity and growth mindset, willingness to fill in the gaps and figure out how to, where did that come from? Have you always been a very sort of curious, eager to learn, lifelong learner type individual, or is that something you developed over time? [00:10:50] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Both, I'll say both. The lifelong learner piece, definitely a part of my personality my whole life, one. Two, I will also say I was lucky in having some phenomenal mentors and strategic leaders that drove that value and the importance of that value, and enforcing us to see the bigger picture and think more holistically. And so I started out with that as part of who I am. And then on top of that, it was further reinforced by having some fantastic leaders that I was lucky enough to work with and for that emphasized the importance of that. [00:11:24] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Yeah. And, you've mentioned having some amazing leaders that were in positions to really help mentor and guide and lead. And I'm wondering, what are some of the most impactful pieces of advice that you've received from leaders that you look up to and or now as accomplished leader yourself, what do you see as being some of the best pieces of leadership advice? [00:11:54] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: So I'm gonna I'm gonna share with you some of my favorites on what makes a good leader and things to pay attention to as a good leader. So to me, anybody who's trying to explore a leadership role within medtech-- it's to everything we just talked about-- it's unbelievably important to choose to see beyond the expected. So have a deep understanding. If you're a project manager for R&D and you want to get promoted to, you want to move up the ladder, you having a deep understanding of the technical aspects of medical device is important, but it's just as important to cultivate a deep understanding of not only the technical, but the technical and business aspects. So the willingness to learn beyond the scope that you are assigned to, the willingness to recognize the importance of strategic thinking, is really important from a leadership standpoint. Additional aspects that are important with respect to strategic thinking, don't be afraid to voice ideas, but be strategic about how and when you do that. So navigating a leadership role to me really requires developing a good acumen on knowing when to assert your ideas and when to hold back, learning how to read different situations and understand the dynamics at play. I think some of the most important advice I was ever given was that we all, especially when you join a new organization, we all have a proclivity for wanting to prove our value or demonstrate our value as soon as possible. And some of the best advice I've given that I've passed along is to be strategic, is to be really good about proactively recognizing when it's a good opportunity for you to do that. And when you're better off holding back and listening and observing and understanding the dynamics of play and choosing your moments wisely on when you make impactful contributions, right? Doing that, you maximize the effectiveness of the input you provide and the influence that you end up having and sometimes holding back initially, choosing to observe and listen gives you insights that better inform your strategy for what to do or how to do it. Building a network is also really important. That's another really good piece of leadership advice. We tend to keep our head down. Early on in my career, I definitely did that. I treat networking and the relationship management as a mandatory part of the job with roles I've had where I'm within an organization and outside of that. So I think that part is unbelievably important for leadership and success. And it's not just the creating a network offers job opportunities. It's creating a network offers opportunities to seek advice and to learn and to stay plugged in from an industry standpoint. So continuous learning is about being proactive and seeking those opportunities to challenge my current thinking, quite frankly, and expand my horizons from that standpoint. [00:14:57] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Oh my goodness. That was so much great advice. Thank you for sharing all of that. I think even the first thing you said, I really appreciated about, see beyond the expected. And I think that's such, I have never heard it put quite like that before, and I really like that of your willingness to go beyond your scope, so that you keep learning and I like your idea of continuing to even challenge your own beliefs and thoughts and processes. All those things. If you can keep doing that, then you're growing, you're learning, you can't stay stagnant that way. So yeah, I appreciate that advice a lot. [00:15:38] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: One, to be clear, it comes from tons of mistakes made and lessons learned over a couple of decades for starting out in a technical role and a technical career. Those are common mistakes I see made, which is you're presenting to management on a project update, and the tendency for us technical folks, for people that started their careers out in science, is to very much focus on the technical aspects of what are going on without taking into account how that information is being presented, the impact that it's having on the politics and the different players in the room and their intent. So it's choosing to see things in a different light than the way that you're used to processing them is very important. Strategic thinking. It's different. [00:16:27] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah, absolutely. And being willing, like you said, to look beyond and to approach things in a different way and maybe take a step back sometimes. Say, "Okay, I need to keep observing before I dive in with my solutions." [00:16:43] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Well, and take stretch rules. I think that's the other thing from a career development. Nobody owns your career. You own that. And If you love medtech, if you love whatever your profession may be, if your goal is advancement and leadership positions within that, but then that profession or that role, it's recognizing that you have to learn other things beyond just R&D if your goal is to manage a division or manage a sector . So I think, it's saying you're going to fulfill your roles and responsibilities and focus on accomplishing those goals, but be selfish about raising your hand for stretch opportunities that provide you exposure to other areas and dimensions of medtech that are outside of your scope, right? With the intent that you're getting that exposure is unbelievably important. [00:17:32] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Yes, I could not agree more. One thing that I noticed from just looking at your LinkedIn profile is you are very passionate about a lot of issues facing our society, our community. And, I saw some speaking opportunities and things where you focus on women's empowerment and whatnot. And I was wondering if you might share a little bit about your passions outside of work that do speak to it. So even with women's empowerment, encouraging women in the medtech field and whatnot, because we have listeners who might really appreciate some of your perspective and advice on that. Would you be willing to share? [00:18:14] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Yeah, I mean, absolutely. Let's be very frank and transparent. I'm a woman that's been predominantly working in a male industry, and I've had some wonderful experiences, but I've also been granted some wonderful obstacles that tested my resilience and determination. I learned over time to see those challenges as an opportunity to strengthen my resolve and even my commitment. And so to me, a few pieces of advice to empower women as they navigate their own paths in leadership is to embrace your unique perspective. I think as women, we bring diverse experiences and insights to the table. And we should never underestimate the value of that viewpoint that we bring as women, right? Early in my career, and I've run into a lot of women that feel this pressure, to posture, to present themselves with a set of characteristics that are more akin to male dominated characteristics versus owning their executive presence, and recognizing the value they bring in authenticity for presenting who they are authentically and not underestimating the value of their own viewpoint versus others complying with the mass or succumbing to the pressure. So I think it's unbelievably important to honor and respect and embrace that unique perspective that you bring as a woman, trusting your instincts and not being afraid to voice your ideas. But again, unbelievably important to be strategic about when you choose to do that. And that piece of advice applies across both. And I think women have a tendency to coming into, especially high level, higher level management roles, a desire to want to prove our worth and prove we have a seat at the table. You have earned the right to sit at that table by default of the fact that you have been offered the job and you have it. Be smart, strategic about when and how you choose to weigh in, recognizing the politics at that same table, right? Is important. And then advocating for yourself and others to the point that you made about, I do quite a bit of speaking. I am on a mission to drive transformative technologies within healthcare. I'm also on a secondary mission to enable an increase in the number of extraordinary women and their commitment to that mission, right? So advocacy, empowerment, education, training on communications and engagement for women is a focus and how I choose to spend my time with the intent that I sincerely believe the more women that you have, more women and more diversity, quite frankly, that you can have in medtech, the better devices and the higher the impact that you can have with respect to innovation in medtech and an impact that MedTech can have on healthcare. So to me, that is a focus. [00:21:10] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Well, and I very much appreciate your perspective and your willingness to share about it. And the fact that this is a mission for you. So, thank you for continuing to support and elevate women in medtech, 'cause it's a need. And to your point, I appreciate you saying that women bring a unique perspective. And so that can be your superpower and you don't need to shrink. [00:21:37] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: 100 percent and authenticity, Lindsey. I think women bring a unique perspective and value the power of authenticity. Resist the urge to position or posture or present yourself as "A" because you believe that "A" is what they want to see. There is unbelievable power in an executive presence of a woman leader that is authentic in the way she presents herself. [00:22:07] Lindsey Dinneen: Yes, could not agree more. Yeah, so, your career has been so interesting and I love the running theme of you being willing to continue to learn and grow and step out of the current role so that you can fill in the gaps. And I'm wondering if there are any moments that stand out to you where it just made you go, "Wow, I am really in the right place, at the right time, in the right industry." [00:22:36] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: So there's been a few of those, but I think one of the most memorable was when-- I have had a few leadership roles within Medtronic, and there's an annual event that gets held there where patients will are willing to share their stories with company employees. And listening to those stories, you realize what a difference we were making to the daily lives of those individuals. It was unbelievably moving and it gives you a renewed sense of hope. So we all in that office, especially, it's an extraordinary group of people that are working unbelievably hard and all of us were running at 90 and it's a constant hurricane of work, right? You lose sight. of how those hundred little activities we do every day are contributing in a transformational way to the lives of others. And sitting through that two hour testimonial set with those patients was a really emotional experience that kind of puts everything in perspective. That was a good what seven years plus now since I sat through that and it still resonates with me. I still think about it all the time. [00:23:47] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Yeah, I think that's really powerful too, to have those moments of realizing the impact that you're making and it is easy to get caught up in the daily grind. And, and forget that, oh my goodness is actually, this impacts somebody's life. [00:24:05] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: It brings it to focus, Lindsey. I loved that whole experience because, and I'm telling you, on the days when getting up in the morning is a little harder than others, it's a nice reminder to just force myself to recalibrate against that. And that we tolerate the craziness, we tolerate the difficulties, we tolerate the barriers and the more difficult days because we have an impact on the back end of the lives of other human beings. And that's the reason I've stayed in medtech for the last 20. There's something extraordinary about that. The ability to do that for someone else is amazing. [00:24:41] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah, it's a gift and it's something to come back to when the days are hard and long and frustrating, because you really do know what you're doing matters. Yeah. [00:24:52] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Exactly right. [00:24:53] Lindsey Dinneen: Yeah. Absolutely. Well, pivoting the conversation just for fun, imagine that you were to be offered a million dollars to teach a masterclass on anything you want. It could be in your industry, but it doesn't have to be related to it. What would you choose to teach and why? [00:25:15] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Honestly, I would teach exactly what I'm, a lot of the time I'm teaching now, which is device commercialization. And, to your earlier question about give me a couple of things that inspired you and told you were right where you needed to be, I taught a course at University of New Mexico, their innovation center a few weeks ago. And one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten from a career perspective is somebody came up to me afterwards and said, "I've been working with folks for a decade plus, and this is the first time in my life I have gotten such a good training that I walked out having a solid understanding of how these pieces tie together from a regulatory perspective and commercialization perspective." So what would I teach exactly what I'm what a lot of the time I'm teaching now from a consulting perspective, which is device commercialization. I picked a career that, that I'm lit up by and that I'm inspired by. I'd be doing the exact same thing, Lindsey. I wouldn't change a thing. [00:26:13] Lindsey Dinneen: I love that. That's so great. [00:26:16] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Yeah. [00:26:18] Lindsey Dinneen: That's very special. I love that. Yeah. Okay. And then how do you wish to be remembered after you leave this world? [00:26:26] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: That I do quite a bit of mentoring. That I had an impact, that I inspired a group of people to maintain this mission to transforming healthcare. It's not just putting out and launching additional devices. It's sincerely a focus on looking at the areas across our healthcare system here in the U. S. and otherwise, and looking for opportunities to change the dynamic in a positive way. So after I die, what I want to be remembered for that the folks that I have, and I've taken on quite a bit over 20 years that I've tried to help grow and advance career wise that I inspired them to keep doing this. And I inspired them to do it well, and do it with integrity and do it right. [00:27:16] Lindsey Dinneen: I love that. Yeah, absolutely. And then final question, what is one thing that makes you smile every time you see or think about it? [00:27:27] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: I mean, personal, probably my cat. We have a British short hair that has an insanely cute face and it's impossible-- I don't care how stressful of a day I've had-- impossible not to crack a smile thinking about that fluff ball. So yeah, our cat for sure. [00:27:46] Lindsey Dinneen: Oh my word, I love that. Animals are the best. [00:27:49] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Yes, well, and she's a recent addition. So we've had her a year. And it is definitely the stress buster. [00:27:57] Lindsey Dinneen: That's perfect. [00:27:59] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: For sure. [00:28:00] Lindsey Dinneen: That's perfect. Animals are inherently just happiness. Well, this has been an incredible conversation. I am so thankful for your willingness to share about your background and what you're up to now, but especially all of your advice. It was so packed full of just amazing pieces of advice to take away. And I really appreciate that you're willing to share all of that with us. So, gosh, thank you so much for your time and thank you for being here and and doing that. I really appreciate it. [00:28:33] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: Well, and likewise, thank you for doing this again. I'm a huge advocate for getting more folks and more people and more women and more individuals involved in medtech, and recognizing the phenomenal opportunities that medtech brings from a career standpoint. And so thank you for doing this because you're spreading that message and educating people on other career options besides, you know, firefighter, doctor, lawyer, engineer. So we appreciate what you're doing too, Lindsey, this is great. [00:29:03] Lindsey Dinneen: Thank you. That made my day [00:29:05] Ruba Sarris Sawaya: It's important. We got to spread the message. [00:29:09] Lindsey Dinneen: it's very true. It's very true. And we are so honored to be making a donation on your behalf as a thank you for your time today to Save the Children, which works to end the cycle of poverty by ensuring communities have the resources to provide children with a healthy, educational, and safe environment. So thank you so much for choosing that charity to support, and we just wish you the most continued success as you work to change lives for a better world. And thank you also to our listeners for tuning in and if you're feeling as inspired as I am right now, I would love it if you would share this episode with a colleague or two, and we will catch you next time. This recording from August 10, 2024. Signum University presents Thesis Theater with Robert Black on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 4pm ET. This paper proposes to compare once again the heroes Beowulf and Böðvarr Bjarki, using linguistics and critiques of the heroes to build on the traditional approaches of comparison through folktale, etymological, and literary analysis to examine the degree to which Beowulf may be considered a hero or the praised object of censure. After summarizing their mode of Germanic Heroism and lightly comparing the heroes' stories and reviewing the current state of scholarship on the Bear's Son Tale as applied to these analogues and the role of the Dragon in Beowulf, attention is given to the use and significance of the term aglæca in Beowulf, including its application to the eponymous hero. Further consideration is given to Beowulf's fate as a Christianised Germanic Hero, and it is argued that the poet subtly critiques Beowulf for the shortcomings endemic to his particular idiom of heroism, in contrast with absence of critique of Böðvarr. This evidence and reasoning provide additional support for the argument that Beowulf was composed in an Anglo-Latin and thus Christianised England, and allow for fresh examination of the implications thereof. About the Presenter: Robert Black earned a Bachelor of Arts in English at Austin College and has taught English Language & Literature at various levels for the past dozen years. When he has free time, he enjoys reading, hiking, a pint of bitter, reading, whistling, watching & discussing movies & shows, and more reading. But what is best in his life is raising three lovely children with his wonderful wife in their native Texas. Welcome back, listeners, to Diverse Thinking Different Learning! In this episode, we're having a conversation with Dr. Sarah Powell, a distinguished professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Associate Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Dr. Powell's expertise in math education sheds light on effective strategies to support students who face challenges with math! The discussion explores the crucial role early math education plays in shaping a student's future academic success, emphasizing that early struggles can lead to long-term difficulties if not addressed properly. Dr. Powell elaborates on how cumulative math skills impact later learning, stressing the importance of early intervention and continuous support throughout a student's educational journey. Dr. Powell also highlights several best practices for math instruction, including the use of multiple representations to deepen understanding and systematic, explicit teaching methods to ensure mastery of concepts. She also addresses the role of math vocabulary and its significance in helping students grasp mathematical ideas more effectively. Tune in to gain valuable insights into how targeted interventions and effective teaching strategies can make a significant difference in students' math achievements. If you are an educator yourself seeking to enhance your math instruction or perhaps a parent looking to support your child's learning, this episode of the show is sure to offer practical advice and actionable strategies to help all students excel in math! Show Notes: [3:14] - Early math performance predicts future success, making early intervention important for long-term achievement. [6:06] - Dr. Powell points out how schools often prioritize reading over math, but early math interventions are just as important. [9:01] - Dr. Powell argues that teaching math vocabulary is essential for understanding concepts and participating effectively in the classroom. [11:59] - Difficulties in math may be linked to language issues, including reading, writing, and speaking. [13:04] - Using multiple representations, like manipulatives and drawings, can help students better understand math concepts. [15:24] - Dr. Powel feels that students should understand math deeply by using various representations, not just by memorizing symbols. [18:55] - Identifying common mistakes better helps target instruction than addressing isolated mistakes. [20:02] - Dr. Powell argues that effective math learning involves modeling, repeated practice, and building fluency through both speed and accuracy. [23:53] - Incorporating short fluency practices into the school day enhances math skills and helps reduce cognitive overload. [25:34] - Older students should develop fluency to avoid using basic strategies like tick marks, which can lead to mistakes. [26:55] - Effective strategies for solving word problems include the U.P.S. check method and recognizing common problem types. [31:16] - Dr. Powell explains how parents can help with word problems by discussing the problem and identifying consistent frameworks. [32:43] - Parents can also support math learning through discussions, games, and incorporating math into daily activities. [35:25] - Engaging in practical math activities, like measuring ingredients, makes math fun and relevant! [38:57] - For additional support, resources include emailing Dr. Powell as well as videos on representations, a free math course, and teacher-friendly materials! About Our Guest: Dr. Sarah R. Powell is a Professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and Associate Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research, teaching, and service focus on mathematics, particularly for students who experience mathematics differently. Welcome back to another exciting episode of the Hitting the Streets Podcast! Today, I'm thrilled to feature Stephen Clayton, a candidate running for SISD School Board Place 2. I had a fantastic time interviewing him and gained valuable insights into Stephen's background and his vision for the school board. Stephen Clayton I am a father of three amazing Sherman ISD students from eighth grade down to kindergarten. I am here for the long-haul. I am an active participant in the PTAs of the two schools my kids attend, a band dad, an athletics dad and have been known to cook a hot dog or two at Neblett. I am a committed community member. I have served on the board of the Sherman Community Players, led the administrative council at my church, and volunteered, all in the name of making Sherman a great place to live. I am a graduate of Austin College, and moved back to Sherman to raise my family, be near friends, and support aging family members. I believe that great education, starting with strong public schools are the cornerstone of the community. My grandparents were both teachers in Sherman schools. My sister and father both have master's degrees in education from Austin College and I have taught economics for the College off and on for nearly 10 years.  And now I am ready to take on the challenge of representing our entire community by running for School Board. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

As we make our approach to 100 episodes we begin our tribute series to the coaches who made a difference in Kovo's life as a young man. What better place to start than the man who so impacted Coach Kovo's while serving as the Head Football Coach of the Austin College Kangaroos in Sherman, TX. He never left his beloved Austin College and is now the Director of Athletics and Kinesiology Department Chair - welcome David Norman to the show! - Growing up in the East Texas town of Big Sandy as the Head Coach's son and bearing witness to his father leading the 1st ever integrated football team in Big Sandy history. A job he did so well that not only did it lead to state championship rings, but an eventual run to the town mayorship! - Coach is our 1st ever alumnus to win championships in THREE different capacities! 1st as a football player at Big Sandy, then our 1st collegiate champion as he was a member of the iconic 1981 NAIA National Championship football team at Austin College, and finally he even won one as a coach when he was a part of the Denison Yellowjacket 1984 State Championship team!!  - Save for the stint at Denison and very early coaching experience at the current State Champion Gunter Tigers, it's been all AC since 1989! Most people think of David Norman, Head Football Coach, but what not a lot of people may know is he was also one heck of a baseball coach for the Kangaroos! - Coach Norman beautifully puts things in perspective about the power of athletics when he shared the story of how at the 10-year reunion of the 1981 National Championship team they put the game film on and were hanging on every play reliving the memory of that game. By 20 years, the game was going in the background but the players were more focused on remembering the funny things like the long bus trip to Sul Ross University, all things that happen to all teams and that would have happened even without that championship. By the 40th reunion they didn't even talk about the game at all! The games fade away, but you are always left with the power of that brotherhood. POWERFUL. - Finally as the ultimate Kangaroo who first arrived on campus in 1979 and essentially never left, we are treated to David Norman's Austin College Kangaroo Mt. Rushmore!! Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

In part 2 of the oral history of the legendary 2013 Ridge Point vs Texas City Playoff game we have another key actor in that night. At that time he was the Offensive Coordinator of vaunted Stingaree attack led by future Longhorn and pro football player D'Onta Foreman. After that game a friendship was born that continued through some struggles that he and Coach Kovo shared as 1st time Head Coaches. He is now the Offensive Coordinator and O-Line Coach for the Boerne Greyhounds - welcome David Wilkinson to the show! - Growing up in Richardson, TX just up the road from downtown Dallas during the time when the Mavericks were always bad and a ticket was easy to come by, and a summertime trip out to the Ballpark at Arlington for a Rangers game was never too far away. - Playing HS ball at JJ Pearce with Aggie Legend Rich Coady and having future CFP Championship Game Head Coach Sonny Dykes as his Offensive Position Coach! - After considering extending his playing career at Austin College or Hardin-Simmons, David decided to head to Aggieland and enrolled at Texas A&M University and then beginning his coaching career back at his alma mater at JJ Pearce. - You won't meet many people more authentic and sincere than David Wilkinson. So, it's no surprise Coach provides a refreshingly REAL assessment of the things he learned during a tough stint as Head Football Coach at Baytown Lee; where the wins on the field to refill his emotional cup were few and far between, and how he learned that he was spending too much time "majoring in the minor". - Finally as a diehard Cowboys fan we give Wilk a tough Dem Boyz O-Line edition with legendary names like Larry Allen, Nate Newton, and Erik Williams! Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

Today's guest dropped an excellent SAT word on me when he described our leadup to this episode as "Serendipitous" - must be that Austin College education! He followed in the footsteps of his older brother Austin as an excellent Safety for the Austin College football team before becoming a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the collegiate level. He has since moved on to live the dream designing and selling weight rooms to schools across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana as a Territory Manager for PLAE - welcome Evan Coachman to the show! - Evan jokes that he grew up in Allen when it was still a small town, then did the same in Frisco before it blew up, so now all of the residents in Van Alystne, TX better watch out for explosive growth! Evan shares stories of his time growing up as a coach's son in those two towns as well as diving into a discussion that any parent of young children will want to listen to describing the approach to social media for youngsters. - Much like Coach Kovo, Evan played on many middling or losing teams growing up so the two coaches discuss what it takes to turn a program around after periods of mediocrity. Evan was able to experience a turn-around 1st hand though along with fellow Austin College alum Vance Gibson as the Frisco Fighting Raccoons were able to turn in a 9-win season by his senior year! - Coach describes his time as a player at Austin College as well as diving into topics ranging from giving coaches time to turn around a program to the importance of investment in the program and facilities by administration. - As a strength and conditioning "sicko" as Coach Kovo likes to lovingly say, Evan gives parents more gems regarding what sports and activities to get your children involved with to help them experience a lifetime of healthy movement. - Finally, Evan's sporting interests vary from teams all across the Metroplex including FC Dallas and Everton out of the English Premier League. However as a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan we ask Evan for his personal Cowboys Mount Rushmore! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. Deborah Crombie was born in Dallas and grew up in Richardson, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas, the second child of Charlie and Mary Darden. Her maternal grandmother, Lillian Dozier, a retired teacher, taught her to read at the tender age of four. After a rather checkered educational career, which included dropping out of high school at sixteen, she graduated from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, with a degree in biology. She then worked in advertising and newspapers and attended the Rice University Publishing Program. A post-university trip to England, however, cemented a life-long passion for Britain, and she later immigrated to the UK with her first husband, Peter Crombie, a Scot, living first in Edinburgh, Scotland, and then in Chester, England. After returning to live in Dallas, a trip to Yorkshire inspired her first Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid/Sergeant Gemma James novel. A Share in Death [Scribner, 1993], was subsequently given Agatha and Macavity nominations for Best First Novel of 1993. The fifth novel, Dreaming of the Bones (Scribner 1997), a New York Times Notable Book for 1997, was short-listed by Mystery Writers of America for the 1997 Edgar Award for Best Novel, won the Macavity Award for Best Novel, and was voted by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association as one of the hundred best mysteries of the century. Her subsequent novels have been received with critical acclaim and are widely read internationally, particularly in Germany. In 2009, Where Memories Lie won the Macavity Award for Best Novel.  In 2010, Necessary as Blood received a Macavity nomination for Best Novel. Crombie's novels are published in North America, Japan, Germany, France, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Romania, Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and numerous other countries. The latest novel in the series, A Killing of Innocents, is available in February 2023 from William Morrow. Although she travels to England several times a year, Crombie lives in McKinney, Texas, a historic town north of Dallas, sharing a circa 1905 Texas Craftsman bungalow with her husband, Rick Wilson, two German shepherds (Dax and Jasmine), and two cats.  She is an aficionado of tea and cocktails, enjoys cooking and admiring her garden, reading, birdwatching, and playing with her dogs. She is currently working on her twentieth Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James novel.

Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We're welcoming another state champ into the Team Player Studios this week y'all! He lead the Robstown Early College HS Girls Powerlifting team to the state championship in their FIRST year of existence! What is he going to do for an encore?? That performance earned him a big ole sparkly state championship ring and the 2022 Austin College Coach of the Year Award! He is also the Defensive Coordinator for the football team and the Assistant Athletic Director RECHS, it's my honor and pleasure to welcome DeAndre Holmes to the show! - Growing up in Fort Worth before heading 20 minutes outside of town to Haltom, TX - Coach Kovo and DeAndre had a frank talk about race and the impact of diversity and importance of representation - Listen to the laugh out loud story of how the self proclaimed "mama's boy" ended up at Austin College in Sherman, TX and how on his first visit to campus he honestly thought he was heading down to the Hill Country - A life-changing interaction with an elementary school student led Coach Holmes to change his career path away from Pharmacy and toward education. DeAndre bucks the old PE or History Coaching Stereotype, as he is now proudly a coach of color that uses his background in science to teach Chemistry - After starting his coaching career close to home at South Hills HS in Fort Worth, DeAndre decided he wanted a change of scenery in order to challenge himself to the utmost. It's been a bit of a challenge for his mom who always wanted him close to home, but he has achieved new heights in his career by making the trek 6 hours South to the Corpus Christi area and Robstown Early College HS - Finally Coach is a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan, but it was the "We Believe" era Golden State Warriors with stars like Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, and Stephen Jackson who made him re-evaluate his lifetime Mavs fandom at they became the 1st ever #8 seed to eliminate a #1 seed in a 7-game series. He found the team whose gritty style of play he loved over just rooting for the hometown team and his allegiance has been sealed ever since. So we play some fun Cowboys Start/Bench/Cuts with names like Smith, Johnston, and Elliott, find out why Coach thinks that Terrell Owens is the greatest Cowboy to ever do it even over the ever-popular "Playmaker" Michael Irvin, and find out which Cowboys defender is his favorite of all-time, hint: it's not Primetime Deion Sanders! Then we end with some Dubs Start/Bench/Cuts, get Coach's take on KD, and how Steph Curry stacks up against the other elite Point Guards in the NBA Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. Dr. Thomas Newsom, President of Southeastern Oklahoma State University shares important insights about widening gaps in our higher education systems. Gaps in normative learning experiences due to the effects of COVID, helping students cross the gap from two-year to four-year institutions, connecting with partnerships for community success and the correcting the misperception of the value of college. These gaps, while they existed prior to the pandemic, have become very prevalent. Dr. Newsom shares ways that Southeastern Oklahoma State University and other higher education institutions "have to be even more intentional" in addressing those gaps.Dr. Newsom earned degrees from Austin College, Texas A&M-Commerce, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from The University of North Texas.Find out more on our website: AmericanDream.fmFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn @degreeinsurance. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We're making Team Player Podcast History AGAIN as we welcome our 1st ever Aquatics coach into the Team Player Studios! He was awarded the 2022 Asst Coach of the Year at Coach Kovo's alma mater, Fort Bend Austin HS, as well as being another in a long line of Austin College Team Player Podcast alums. He is currently the Asst Swim Coach at AHS, along with starting a brand new program this year as Head Water Polo coach, welcome Sean Brogan to the show! - Growing up in the Quail Valley neighborhood in Missouri City, TX and being one of those kids that played in the street until it was time for dinner - Being a child of educators means sometimes you attend school where they teach, which meant Coach had to leave his friends behind in the Elkins zone and make the early drive every morning over to Dulles HS with his dad who was an AP there at the time. Perhaps some of his transgressions as a young man played a factor in the decision as well so Mr. Brogan could keep a watchful eye! - He formed a special relationship with his Head Coach Jim Creech and OL Coach Chris Kahl was also being a member of the varsity swim team at Dulles. In what might be another TPP first AND last, Coach was one of the few that can proudly say they played Right Tackle and was a sprinter on the swim team! - Being treated as "the best thing since sliced bread" at a senior showcase is one way to get a Houstonian to make the 5-hour drive up to Sherman, TX for school! After battling through injuries his first 2 years on the Austin College football team, he rediscovered his love for swimming with a special coach in Bob Filander - Coach has a special talent whereas it seems wherever he goes, change soon follows. Be weary of buying him a jersey of your favorite athlete because 5 or 6 in a row of those examples ended up almost immediately traded away! Despite his propensity for being a harbinger of change coach carved out a nice career in the Football world working on a great staff at Fort Bend Clements under fellow TPP alum Bobby Darnell (ep35). However, it wasn't long before his true love came calling again, and he found himself back in the pool - Finally as the son of native Philadelphian, his Eagles and Phillies love runs true, with a bit of Sixers and Flyers mixed-in. Coach even brought the energy into the studio matching Coach Kovo as he rocked a Joel Embid Sixers jersey (keep your eyes on the headlines this summer for a blockbuster trade!) and he shared with us where the real ones go for a Cheesesteak in the City of Brotherly love, hint: it's not the tourist traps Coach Kovo fell for on his last visit. As a lover of history, Coach Brogan one-upped Coach Kovo with a very informative Swim Legend and Phillies Mount Rushmore, and a fun Fly Eagles Fly Start/Bench/Cut with names like Cunningham, McNabb, and the late great "Minister of Defense" Reggie White Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. We're making Team Player Podcast History again as we welcome our first ever Canadian-born guest, as well as our first ever published author and varsity football official! We take a trip down memory lane over a career that has spanned 6 decades of involvement with the game of football, including being named to the All Texas College Team and the 1971 All-Canadian team. He is a true Austin College football legend with his induction into the AC Athletics Hall of Honor in 2018. Please welcome Keith Johnston to the show! - While he was born in Toronto, Ontario it seemed Keith was destined to be linked to rodeo as he moved out West at age 4 to the home of the Stampede in Calgary, Alberta and then down South to Dallas, TX at age 11 - Starting a new program as a player at W.T. White HS in Dallas, TX in the 1960's - He formed a special relationship with his Head Coach Roland Hallmark that continued for almost 50 years in the form of reunions all the way up until Coach Hallmark's passing in 2020 - Keith shares some harrowing tales of big comebacks and fun times as a member of the Austin College football team, as well as continuing his college football career in Canada as a graduate student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. - He spent decades on the sidelines but not in the same way as most of our TPP alums. He was a Head Linesman as a Varsity football official in the Houston area, but his career took him all over the world including to England where he officiated a rivalry game the likes of Texas and Oklahoma in the form of Cambridge vs Oxford. Back stateside though, Keith shares numerous stories of sometimes humorous, sometimes threatening interactions with coaches or spectators as we take a look into the life of a football official! - Finally as a published author, Keith is a wealth of knowledge regarding the football history. Therefore rather than a Start/Bench/Cut this week we opted for an open-ended approach with a Mount Rushmore of all-time greats in Canadian and Austin College football history! American fans may enjoy discussing some of the nuances of the Canadian game, and Austin College fans old and new alike will likely enjoy his Kangaroo all-time greats list Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. Some things we can't seem to avoid talking about every week this season: The Cortaca Jug game in Yankee Stadium The University of Wisconsin-Platteville This week, Platteville made headlines again, and for the second week in a row, extremely positive headlines as the Pioneers shook up the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 17-14 win against then-No. 3 UW-Whitewater. What in the name of Dan Arnold is going on with this program? How did the Pioneers go from losing back-to-back games by an average of 40 points, to these two consecutive wins against River Falls and Whitewater? We've had these questions. We assume you've had these questions. So we ask these questions. We ask them of Ryan Munz, the Platteville head coach, who is our guest on Fast 5, plus maybe a couple of extra minutes at the top of the podcast. Plus, it's really time to dig into how the playoffs are set up in Division III football. If you're new to Division III, this is a must-listen. Even if you've been following for a few years, a refresher might be helpful and yes, some things have changed, even if they are small things. In all, 69 schools merit serious mention in this week's podcast. That includes the way in which Cortland beat Utica, how North Central handled Washington U., Austin College and Beloit breaking long losing streaks, not to mention Bowdoin pulling off an unexpected victory as well. In addition, Pat and Greg hand out game balls, spotlight the unexpected in Stat of the Week, make guesses about Week 9 games and more. There's a list in small type at the bottom of this page of all the teams that are talked about. Fan question in the mailbag from @mikey_shoultz: What team from the bottom 10 ranked conferences in your conference rankings has the best chance to win a playoff game? Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. He attended Jesuit College PreparatorySchool of Dallas. After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike. Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years. In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous. He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology. Becket's book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man's Incredible Story of Redemption, with a foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.TBCS theme song by Seth Kaye#TheBecketCookShow #LiveQA

Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We got another Austin College linebacking legend in the house today y'all, he picked up that torch passed on from TPP Ep.17 alum Marvin Nash and ran with it becoming a tackling machine for the Roos in his final 2 seasons. Now he is the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Mesquite HS, welcome DeMarcus "Mace" Harris to the show! - Growing up in Pittsburg, America: Coach Harris gives us a history lesson on how cool of a little town Pittsburg (no H) is and shares the story behind his nickname - The story of his longtime relationship with his HS football coach Steve Bragg who kicked him off the team is sophomore year but would still give him a ride when he needed it, and is someone he keeps in touch with to this day - Coach shares the stories of his time at Austin College including his signature Jordan cleats, playing Point Guard for an Intramural Basketball Dynasty, the village of Roos that watched over him and pushed him to graduate, and for a 4th time in a row an Austin College guest shares their favorite Coach Norman stories! - DeMarcus reflects on his coaching stops including the time he had his DC title ripped from him after a rough game against the Sherman Bearkats, and how that low point coupled with an 0-10 season at Richardson High were necessary to prepare him to take the Cedar Hill Longhorns all the way to state as their Defensive Coordinator! - Coach Harris and Kovo share in that they have been in charge of programs that have won a state championship in the past, and how DeMarcus has been working to remember that 2001 State Championship every single week - Finally Mace reflects on how a kid from a small East Texas town has had the good fortune of playing or coaching alongside so many future pros. I task him with the difficult task of picking which 4 of those young men he would choose to be alongside him with the State Title on the line. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We got an Austin College football legend in the house y'all!! He is the Co-Offensive Coordinator at San Marcos High School, along with being one of THE pre-eminent Recruiting Coordinators in the state and the host of one of Coach Kovo's favorite podcasts: "The iCoach Podcast" (subscribe right now, you won't regret it!!), welcome Marvin Nash to the TPP family! - Growing up in New Waverly, TX and starting his 1st varsity game at 13 years old!! - Not one for spending time on the sidelines he arrived at Austin College in Sherman, TX and immediately proceeded to start as a 17 year old Freshman! - Marvin shares some fun stories from his Austin College career and is our 2nd guest in a row and 3rd overall whose life has been touched by the legendary Kangaroo Head Coach and Athletic Director David Norman!! - Starting a career in Finance before quickly realizing his heart was out on the grass, "being that coach he needed when he was younger" - Much like TPP alumnus Cirilo Ojeda, Coach Nash started coaching in the middle school ranks and he is also very thankful that he did. From there he is gained valuable experience at several stops including with fellow Austin College alum and successful Head Coach Jeff Riordan - Coach Nash is a sharp x's and o's coach as OC but it's his "why" and love for kids that has propelled him in the Recruiting Coordinator world. Listen as he shares what it takes to be successful in this realm and how best to help kids play ball beyond high school - Coach Kovo is always looking to sharpen his skills as a podcaster, and this is one guest equipped to that!! In a span of 48 hours Coach Kovo binged Marvin's entire back catalog and walked away inspired and even more thankful for coaches in our society!! Subscribe to "the iCoach Podcast" ASAP!! - Despite being so stoic and fearsome on the field of Jerry E. Apple Stadium as a player, you can tell from listening to the first 30 seconds of the iCoach Podcast the incredible intellect that Coach Nash possesses and he is an absolute artist with words. So it comes as no surprise to me that he writes poetry and prose, but you may not have known he is the self-proclaimed "biggest Marvel Comics nerd ever". - Coach is a huge Ravens fan and his beloved hometown Houston Rockets lost him after Hakeem the Dream ended his career in a Raptors uniform. So in his honor we play a Mavs edition of Start/Bench/Cut with names like: Kidd, Nash, Doncic, Nowitzki, and Finley, and in honor of his Ravens fandom he ranks the greats like Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed. Finally as one of the best middle linebackers in Austin College history we play an MLB edition with names like Lewis, Seau, and Urlacher Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. Coach Kovo gives it the ole Austin College "try" (let the Dad jokes commence) as we make TPP history with our 1st ever Rugby guest!! Our summer "road trip" continues as we chase the Rocky Mountain High all the way out to the great state of Colorado. It was here in a scene straight out of Hollywood set to a rare May snowstorm that our guest won the 2022 D2 Colorado HS State Championship!! Here he was a part of a motley crew led by a inspiring Football Coach that took the baseball program from perennial cellar-dwellars to knocking on the door of a winning record! - While beginning a career in sports journalism at UNT in Denton, Pat experienced a spiritual conversion of sorts at the altar of Rugby! - It was never the same after that and after stops in College Station, Austin, and now Boulder, CO one thing was always the same; Pat was playing or coaching Rugby! - Listen to the thrilling story of finally breaking through to win the State Championship with Boulder Rugby FC in a driving, rare late-spring snowstorm! - Finally in honor of the beautiful game of Rugby we play a GOAT edition of Start/Bench/Cut with the Legendary All-Blacks: Dan Carter/Richie McCaw/Jonah Lumu and Pat educates Coach Kovo on the nuances between Rugby Union and Rugby League Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We've got an all Austin College edition of the Team Player Podcast today; where all my Roos at?! Sherman, TX where you at?? We did it again with more TPP firsts: this time we have our first Austin College alumnus in the building AND we have the first ever TPP alum that Coach Kovo actually coached against...when he was a PLAYER. He's the QB coach at Alvarado HS, welcome Ben Moran to the show! - The pride of Tomball, TX he was a part of the first ever graduating class of THE Tomball Memorial High School, and he recounts what it was like as a player starting a new program, "that team up North", and bouncing back against said team in one of the greatest games in TISD history - Coach "wasn't fooling anybody" when he initially tried the pre-med route. He's a coach at heart and has been blessed to learn directly from some of the most respected coaches in the Houston area like Tommy Kaiser, Finis Vanover, Monte Huggins, Sterling Doty, and John Snelson - Listen to Coach describe his love for Austin College, Division 3 football (our second TPP alum in a row that played D3 football), and how he started a unique path of actually coaching on the Austin College staff before his eligibility had run out - Coach contrasts coaching in college to coaching in HS and explains why he enjoyed being on the road recruiting, and the time he coached against an NFL player at the Division 3 level - He may bleed Austin College Crimson and Gold but his first love was Texas A&M so we hit him with an Aggie edition of Start/Bench/Cuts, laced with some Wrecking Crew throwbacks and a potentially eye-raising decision at Quarterback with names like Coryatt, Nguyen, Miller, Richardson, Tannehill, and Manziel Join the Team Player Revolution! Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We're talking to a 3-sports all-stater today from our good friends east of the Sabine River in Louisiana! Whenever a former guest says Kovo you have to bring someone in we listen, especially when the recommendation is coming from our OG, Ep.1's Kendra Venzant! He is the DC of the Nimitz Cougars, he is a true Team Player as he has listened to the entire Team Player Podcast catalogue, and even pulled off a TPP first by referencing other episodes! He is the pride of Leesville, LA welcome Earl Westbrooks to the show! - Leesville born and raised, he grew up in fertile Football grounds as he recounts names like LSU's Cecil "The Diesel" Collins and the Jets Hall-of-Famer Kevin Mawae - Coach has pulled off another Team Player Podcast first as he has broken the streak of TPP alumni who entered college majoring in something else, he basically came out of the womb with a whistle around his neck! - Listen to how he fell in love with Marshall, TX during his time at East Texas Baptist University, and how his team thumped Coach Kovo's alma mater Austin College the one time they played, while Kovo had to dust off the record books to find the 15-11 Kangaroo victory over ETBU in 04 - "Styles Make Fights" listen to Coach Westbrooks describe the style his D plays, and how his attention to the "ART" of detail has paid off in getting lined up right - Coach describes how much he has learned coaching alongside retired Nimitz Head Coach, Rich Slater, and how his DL set the tone for an outstanding year on defense, and why he is buying up the Baylor team shop after the commitment of the best player he's ever coached - Listen to the story of how he met his wife who is a fellow coach, and how she helped him to get his start in coaching, as well as why he has Campus Athletic Coordinator written all over him with his love for all of the other sports on campus - Coach lists his favorite teams as the Saints, LSU Football, S.Carolina Women's Basketball (shoutout Dawn Staley and shoutout Nat'l Champs!), and the Lakers. Coach was an all-state point guard and he knows his women's hoops so we give him some tough Start/Bench/Cuts, one of which may never allow him to show his face in Louisiana again! It's another tough segment with names like Taurasi, Augustus, and Cynthia Cooper, followed by Brees/Burrow/Mahomes then OBJ/Jefferson/Chase and finally MJ/Lebron/Kobe.
