In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Jamie Lo discuss the complex topic of marijuana and the fetal brain. Dr. Lo explains some of the findings from a study of over 3 million pregnant individuals in California, why pregnant individuals may choose to use marijuana, the links between THC exposure in the fetal brain and long-term neurodevelopmental issues, and why this conversation is becoming increasingly important for healthcare providers to have with their patients. Dr. Lo emphasizes the importance of both maternal and fetal health, the need for better public health campaigns, and increased education for healthcare providers to address the rising use of cannabis during pregnancy. Key Takeaways: More people now use marijuana than alcohol. The prevalence of pregnant individuals ranges from about 2-5% up to 30% depending on socioeconomic status, region, and other factors. The reasons that pregnant individuals report marijuana use are typically for nausea, vomiting, sleep, insomnia, and mental health as well as management of pain and stress. Marijuana is not safer just because it is “plant-based”. Opium, tobacco, and alcohol are all also plant-based. We need clearer public health messaging around cannabis. The information widely available now is often confusing or stigmatized. "Cannabis, unlike other drugs, is not related to birth defects, but there is an increased risk for preterm birth, small for gestational age babies, increased risk for stillbirth, as well as longer-term effects that are more subtle but are very important." — Dr. Jamie Lo, MD Connect with Dr. Jamie Lo, MD: Professional Bio: https://www.ohsu.edu/people/jamie-lo-md-mcr Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. A fundamental concept in neuroscience and human consciousness is that our judgments and views of the world often reflect our internal state. In other words, when we judge others harshly, we are frequently projecting aspects of ourselves onto them. This cyclical nature of self-judgment and external judgment perpetuates negativity in both directions. Connect with David Hanscom, MD Connect with Les Aria, Ph.D Learn more about your ad choices. Practical Tips to Navigate Grief with Julieanne Williams In this episode, you'll hear: How Julieanne told her children what happened to their dad Key takeaways from her books: H.O.P.E. The importance of community How can you help someone who is grieving? What life after a loss can look like Julieanne Williams was born in a small farm town with a heart defect that required surgery at the age of 5. It complicated her childhood but also developed a resilience in her that she would need later on. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in applied developmental psychology from Cal Poly SLO and a Master of Public Health from Fresno State. She has also written several books, including Griefquake, Head Above Water, and Unleash Her. At age 38, Julianne's husband took his life after battling bipolar disorder. This left her in a dire financial situation, navigating a turbulent custody battle with her in-laws, and learning how to be a single parent to young children grieving the loss of their father. Her mission is to use what she has learned to help others who are experiencing loss and trauma from the death, illness, or emotional severing of a spouse, child, or parent, as well as other life-altering grief-triggering events. In this episode, Mathew and Julieanne discuss the realities of having a loved one with bipolar disorder and losing a spouse to suicide, what she learned about grief along the way, and what she may have done differently looking back. Mathew talks about the recent loss of his mother and best friend, and Dr. Dave gives us some good information about what people going through grief need to recognize about themselves. Julieanne emphasizes the role of community, tells us how she worked hard to stay connected, and outlines how connection helps facilitate healing. She also notes the importance of normalizing the fact that grief hurts, it's unique, and it doesn't go away, but it does get better. “There is life after loss.” Follow the podcast: Listen on Apple Podcasts (link: https://apple.co/3s1YH7h) Listen on iHeart (link: https://ihr.fm/3MEY7FM) Listen on Spotify (Link: https://spoti.fi/3yMmQCE) Resources: JulianneWilliams.com Julianne on Instagram Dr. David Leicken, MD Connect with Mathew Blades: Twitter - twitter.com/MathewBlades Instagram - instagram.com/MathewBladesmedia/ Facebook - facebook.com/mathewbladesmedia/ Website - learnfrompeoplewholivedit.com/ Additional Credits: LFPWLI is managed by Sam Robertson

In Jeremiah 29:11, God reminds us that He has extraordinary plans for each and every one of us. Often, it can be easy to get anxious when we think about the future and the unknown, but it's important for us to trust God—His timing and plans are greater than we can imagine. Singer and songwriter Melanie Penn opens up about insecurities she has faced throughout her career and how staying rooted in her faith has always gotten her through the unknown. Quotes “I believe that God is on my side and that this abundant God who knows all the songs that have ever or will ever be written, that same God is just delighted to give a song to one of His children.” - Melanie Penn “My faith is the work and the work is my faith. I think that—especially for writers or creators—it's very incarnational to make something. So you are kind of peering into the unseen and then bringing something into the world that hopefully gives life to people. And that in and of itself is like the incarnational work of Christ.” - Melanie Penn “Wherever I am, God is going to be there. And I will be given what I need from Him to meet the challenges of a place. And all I need to do is stay in the day and do what God has given me to do on that particular day and have joy in that.” - Melanie Penn Guest's Links Melanie Penn's Website Melanie Penn's Instagram Melanie Penn's Facebook Melanie Penn's Twitter Resources Mentioned in This Episode Curt Thompson, MD Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

According to Michael Arloski, "The root of 'coach' can be traced to a village in Hungary, Kocs, where carriages were made in the 1500s. Coaches love metaphors and what is better than this one: A 'coach' takes you from where you are to where you want to go. Perfect. In this episode, Blake Windsor, MD a pediatrician with a subspecialty in training for pediatric pain medicine, and a board certified headache specialist discusses post concussive headaches and unique challenges it poses. Headache is the most common post traumatic or post concussive symptom. Even when a child is given the appropriate care, in many cases we find that they still experience post-concussive pain long after we expect them to recover. He points that often there is much confusion and debate around what people refer to as Post-Concussive Syndrome, when in reality there seem to be somewhat arbitrary lines surrounding the term. Dr. Windsor also believes that pediatric pain medicine should be as common as other specialties, because it makes the work of other specialties much more streamline and accessible to patients. Listen in on this episode as Dr. Windsor walks us through the uniqueness of post-concussive headaches, various stages, risk factors, identification and treatment! Takeaways In This Episode How Dr. Windsor's experience with sickle cell patients in an inner city hospital led to his pursuit of a career in pediatric pain medicine What makes post-concussive headaches so unique Factors that result in a headache manifesting after traumatic brain injury Other risk factors to keep in mind while testing and which groups are more vulnerable to them Signs specific to post-concussive syndrome to look out for When is the right time for a pain specialist to be involved in post-concussive care?
