Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Azucena is a self-advocate with Cerebral Palsy and a communications professional with over 10 years of experience in Communications/Public Relations. She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants who did not speak English at the time they received Azucena's diagnosis, which left them with many questions but very few resources in Spanish to understand how this diagnosis would affect her in the future. Thanks to this, Azucena learned the importance of having resources available in multiple languages, and she learned to advocate for herself and others with disabilities from an early age. Growing up, she became keenly aware of the beauty, barriers, and challenges of having a developmental disability in a world that has not always been welcoming to her needs and those of others with disabilities. This insight and first-hand experience motivate her to find policy solutions that address the systemic challenges that people with disabilities face when trying to access housing, employment, and other resources. Azucena graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communications and Political Science from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Over the span of her 10+ year career she has worked with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), NBC, SEIU California State Council and the Center for Policy Initiatives (CPI) in San Diego. Kirsten Jacobs, MSW, Senior Director of Shared Learning at LeadingAge, shares insights on ageism, diversity, and leadership from her 20+ years in senior living. She talks about the importance of supporting peer-to-peer learning, promoting diversity at the top, and calling out the web of ageism, ableism, and other “isms”, standing in the way of aging well. About Kirsten With over 20 years of experience in older adult housing, services, and long-term care management, Kirsten credits her four late grandparents for her commitment to the field. Her undergraduate thesis project, dedicated to sharing art with older adults, set the stage for an ongoing interest in dementia and holistic wellbeing. Kirsten has held various positions—including administrator and executive director. Currently, she serves on the knowledge team at LeadingAge, a national association of elder-serving organizations. As Senior Director, Shared Learning Initiatives, Kirsten leads and manages the organization's wellness and dementia education strategy and other shared learning activities. Kirsten also guides a diverse set of education initiatives to advance LeadingAge's ageism work and strategic focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).  Kirsten earned a Master of Social Work (MSW) and gerontology certificate from Portland State University (Portland, OR) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in arts administration and a minor in studio art from Scripps College (Claremont, CA). Kirsten lives in her hometown of Portland, OR with her spouse, two kiddos, and goofy dog. Key Takeaways LeadingAge's shared learning approach creates opportunities for senior living providers to learn from each other. There is always wisdom in the room, whether virtual or physical. LeadingAge's LTSS Center at UMass Leaders of Color Network provides career path support and mentorship for persons of color in senior living and aging services. Ageism starts with a youth-obsessed culture that reinforces the message that young is good and old is bad, starting with children's books and movies. By the time we are older, we have these really internalized negative feelings of what it means to grow old. Discrimination is layered. It' difficult to look at one “ism” without acknowledging other layers of oppression compounded with the experience of aging. The web of ageism and ableism is so intertwined it's impossible to separate. Leading Age Leadership Summit April 15th - 17th in Washington, DC. will address the implications of changing demographics and how to better support people in the experience of growing older.

Kazi is enabling a vital step forward in impact with improved tools for measuring it. I am honored to serve on his advisory board.Born in Bangladesh, he says, “I have seen firsthand what poverty and hunger look like. That helped shape the way I see the world.” He says it prompted him to ask, “Is there anything I can do?” He has devoted his career to making a difference.Quantibly provides tools that seamlessly integrate with existing processes for tracking impact-related activities, allowing more precise calculations of inputs and outcomes. The team built the software around an almost universally accepted framework:There is one framework that almost every organization kind of agrees on, and that is called the theory of change. The theory of change process essentially tracks your resources, looks at the problem, sets certain assumptions, tracks activities and benchmarks, and sees the immediate mid-term and long-term outcomes of the work. With that framework underpinning the Quantibly platform, it is being adopted by a wide range of users, from large corporations to smaller nonprofits.AI Episode SummaryQuantifiable strives to standardize impact reporting for organizations to demonstrate and improve their social impact. Cyrus Kazi's superpower is empathy.* The Superpowers for Good Show is hosting Cyrus Kazi, the CEO and founder of Quantibly, a company that focuses on impact data gathering for nonprofits, social enterprises, and corporate social responsibility departments.* Quantibly is the first platform to collect and report impact data, standardizing the process and making it presentable for stakeholders to see the real impact of their investments.* The platform incorporates an impact framework that tracks resources, benchmarks, and outcomes to provide a holistic view of an organization's impact.* Cyrus has been working with nonprofits, NGOs, governments, and philanthropies for 25 years, leading him to develop Quantibly as a solution for the lack of standardized and verifiable impact data in the sector.* The Quantibly platform simplifies data entry and allows organizations to track outcomes over time, even if the data is collected years later.* The platform also helps foundations and philanthropies monitor the impact of their investments in real time, enabling them to intervene and support grantees as needed.* Quantibly can connect with other data formats, making it easy for organizations to import existing data and avoid double work.* Empathy is Kazi's superpower, which drives his work and motivates him to create value and make a positive impact.* Kazi believes that looking at the world through a value creation lens, rather than a transactional one, enhances empathy and leads to meaningful actions.* Kazi's personal and professional experiences in child welfare influenced his work on Quantibly, as he aimed to use data to protect children from abuse and neglect. How to Develop Empathy As a SuperpowerTo understand the value of empathy, Cyrus explains:We don't live in isolation. Right? So for many, many years, I think either through some philosophical evolution that I had, I started to realize that whatever I am going to do, I can't determine the end result. But as long as my empathy is there, my intentions are there; at least if I can do one good thing for my fellow human beings, I think that will make an impact. So it's a it's a thought process. He helped me see empathy through a more pragmatic lens I'd never considered before. His view of it is that of a visionary CEO. “I don't necessarily think that I look at the world like I used to when I was much younger–from a transactional point of view. I look at it as a value creation point of view. I think that that helps me.”Seeing empathy as a tool for value creation in business akin to strategy is a profound insight for a social entrepreneur.By following Cyrus's example and advice, you can make empathy a practical skill in your portfolio. With practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest ProfileCyrus Z. Creating Sterile Processing Department schedules that make the most of a staff's time requires a complete understanding and visibility of the demands of a particular healthcare facility. And to gain that big picture, a department needs data and lots of it. Still, more than that, a Sterile Processing Department needs a platform solution that provides reporting in an innovative and actionable way. What's the next generation of technology available to make SPD scheduling demands less challenging?Tyler Kern, the host of ConCensis, came together with Seamus Johnson, Sr. Director of Application Development for Censis, Jeff Long, Network Director of Sterile Processing at St. Luke's University Health Network, and Cody Troutt, Director of Central Sterile at Williamson Medical for a third, and final discussion on Censis' new CensisAI2 Productivity platform. There are an estimated 51.4 million inpatient surgeries performed in the U.S. on an annual basis. That's a lot of reusable instruments that require sterile processing. It's no wonder Sterile Processing Departments (SPDs) have their hands full. Today, increased responsibilities and difficulty finding and retaining qualified employees to manage these critical tasks are challenging to solve.Even with data tracking tools and platforms, making sense of all that collected data to take actionable steps to create efficiencies can take time and effort. Dr. Jada Philips originally wanted to be a lawyer. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI, she moved to New York with her then boyfriend, now husband, with the idea of going to Columbia University to become a criminal lawyer. Circumstances changed so she adjusted and used her interest in psychology and her psychology classes toward earning her Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College in NY. Dr. Philips describes this part of her journey as going with the flow. In this podcast, Dr. Jada Philips (known as “Dr. J”) recalls her academic and professional journey leading up to her opening her own private practice in New Jersey called “Reserved For You Psychological Services.” She shares her experiences and thoughts in hopes of helping those interested in the field of psychology or wanting to become a licensed psychologist and opening their own business. She admits there were some challenges along the way but said “I have pushed beyond what people said I could do.” She shares some of the challenges associated with starting your own private practice. She also discusses how and why she earned two master's degrees and why she decided to receive her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Walden University. Throughout the podcast, Dr. J offers practical advice to those who are seeking a graduate degree in psychology and those wanting to become a licensed psychologist. For example, she states “definitely speak with enrollment staff about the whole licensing requirements for [your] state. Find out how many hours you need. Find out how the school assists in getting those hours or having connections to other businesses or other mental health professionals that can help get those hours.” Dr. J also recalls how many clinical hours were required to receive her New York psychologist license and how important it is to find the postdoc opportunities and those people who can sign off on your hours. When asked if she had any additional advice for those wanting to break into the field of psychology or open their own private practice, she offered these encouraging words “if you're willing to do it, step out on your own” and “I would say do it if you want it. If that's where your interest is at, don't let anything hold you back.” She also shared that she joined a group on Facebook called “Clinicians of Color [in Private Practice]” that helped her overcome some of the challenges of thinking through and starting her business. She said that there are many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) therapists in the group and many people who own their own private practice who share their information and stories which helped her and can help others wanting to open their own psychology private practice. Near the end of our discussion, I learned one thing that is unique about Dr. J, she loves giraffes. When she was younger, she remembers everybody liking a certain animal, usually one of the common animals like a cheetah or elephant. She loves giraffes because they are so unique and different. With this in mind, I believe she would enjoy, and agree with, the following advice “Don't be afraid to stick your neck out and reach for your goals.” Connect with Jada Philips: LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram | WebsiteConnect with the Show: Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn https://vimeo.com/748852931 Interests and Specializations Dr. Jada Philips has over 14 years of mental health experience and she specializes in individual therapy, testing and assessments, and private consultations. Many negative views of immigrants came from social media and during political campaigns. We are excited to finally bring you our Age Series. There are different levels of CHAOS, blessings, lessons, heartache, happiness, desires, goals, dreams, and ideologies throughout the lifespan and we wanted to do a series that would reflect the growth, highlight the accomplishments, illustrate similarities, and NORMALIZE the CHAOS throughout the years. We will be having multiple guests, of a variety of backgrounds, join us for each decade and discuss careers, goals, love, friendship, and advice they'd share for those currently in that age group. Additionally, we have two special episodes scheduled, with a panel of guest speakers, discussing divorce and the journey to motherhood. To kick off the series, we have Marcus Hughes, our wonderful audio engineer, reminiscence and reflect on the Teen Years and share how he's "grown up" over the last few years. Marcus was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and is the youngest of 3 children. He received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in design studies from Arizona State University. He has worked for companies like Nintendo before becoming a self-employed Entrepreneur with multiple businesses. He currently lives in Seattle and enjoys working out, playing video games, and audio engineering. Please remember and respect the experiences, thoughts, and opinions of those interviewed throughout the series. Not every single experience or piece of advice may resonate with you or your family; take from the series what applies. We value the experiences and uniqueness of each individual person and have a zero tolerance policy with regards to hate, discrimination, bullying, harassment, or negative slurs. We truly hope you enjoy this series and welcome all feedback!

Kirsten Jacobs discusses how ageism and segregation negatively impact the senior living industry—based on her work co-leading LeadingAge's ageism work on an America freed from ageism. She also shares key takeaways from the 2020 conference, and how Covid-19 could threaten industry progress. About Kirsten With nearly 20 years of experience in older adult housing and services, memory care, and long-term care management, Kirsten credits her four grandparents for her passion for the field. Her undergraduate thesis project, which focused on sharing art with older adults, set the stage for an ongoing interest in dementia and holistic wellbeing. Kirsten has held various positions—including administrator and executive director. Currently, she serves on the knowledge team at LeadingAge, a national association of elder serving organizations. As the director of dementia and wellness education, Kirsten leads LeadingAge's dementia and wellness collaborative learning strategy and provides thought leadership to various audiences, including speaking/presenting and delivering technical assistance to LeadingAge members. Kirsten co-leads LeadingAge's ageism work which supports the organization's vision, an America freed from ageism. Kirsten earned a Master of Social Work (MSW) and gerontology certificate from Portland State University (Portland, OR) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in arts administration and a minor in studio art from Scripps College (Claremont, CA). Key Takeaways Ageism negatively effects senior living because if we don't value older adults as a community, country, and culture, we are not going to value the people, or the places, focused on them. There is a lack of evidence on the efficacy of separate memory care facilities. Covid-19 could shift the industry from a person-directed approach toward a more institutional model as infection control moves to the forefront. Senior living communities are finding more creative ways to create connection, such as hallway gatherings where residents meet in their doorways, and better use of outdoor spaces and nature.
