Kamau Bell and Late Night with Seth Meyers, as well as Mythic Quest on Apple+. Aparna was also named one of “The 50 Funniest People Right Now” by Rolling Stone. In 2019, she was in a Super Bowl commercial with Michael Bublé for sparkling water neé seltzer. In 2016, she released her debut album, Just Putting It Out There, on Tig Notaro's label, Bentzen Ball Records, and recorded a half hour special for Comedy Central. Alvin Irby is a former kindergarten teacher turned award-winning social entrepreneur, international speaker, comedian, and author. He is Founder and Chief Reading Inspirer at Barbershop Books, a literacy program that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops and provides early literacy training to barbers. His work connecting reading to male-centered spaces and involving men in boys' early reading experiences earned him the National Book Foundation's 2017 Innovations in Reading Prize. Irby's popular TED Talk "How to inspire every child to be a lifelong reader," has been viewed over 1 million times. Irby's nationally-recognized cultural competency workshops help school districts, library systems, and education organizations create relevant and engaging learning experiences for all students. His Diversity & Inclusion trainings have been described as informative, inspiring, engaging, and humorous. For this week's episode we partner with April Doner and the Abundant Community to speak with Yuki Jackson.Yuki Jackson is a Black and Japanese poet, text-based artist and educator. She focuses on empowerment and enlightenment, specifically seeking to share her perspective and experiences as the divine feminine. Her poetry has been published in literary journals such as Four Way Review and Cream City Review, for which she was nominated for a 2021 Best of the Net Award and the 2020 Summer Poetry Prize. She is a regular contributor for the “Poet's Notebook” column of Creative Loafing Tampa Bay and has been featured as a poet, speaker and panelist at various institutions, organizations and media outlets, including the University of South Florida, Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, Metro Inclusive Health, 88.5 WMNF radio station and WEDU PBS. Among her commissioned work, she has written and performed a poem for the Goodwin-Procter global law firm.Yuki has taught writing classes as a professor at Ringling College of Art and Design and as a freelance teaching artist for community-based nonprofits such as Keep St.Pete Lit, SpaceCRAFT and Cultured Books. Her work as an arts educator includes being the founder of The Battleground, a youth program serving a historically marginalized community in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Jada Philips originally wanted to be a lawyer. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI, she moved to New York with her then boyfriend, now husband, with the idea of going to Columbia University to become a criminal lawyer. Circumstances changed so she adjusted and used her interest in psychology and her psychology classes toward earning her Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College in NY. Dr. Philips describes this part of her journey as going with the flow. In this podcast, Dr. Jada Philips (known as “Dr. J”) recalls her academic and professional journey leading up to her opening her own private practice in New Jersey called “Reserved For You Psychological Services.” She shares her experiences and thoughts in hopes of helping those interested in the field of psychology or wanting to become a licensed psychologist and opening their own business. She admits there were some challenges along the way but said “I have pushed beyond what people said I could do.” She shares some of the challenges associated with starting your own private practice. She also discusses how and why she earned two master's degrees and why she decided to receive her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Walden University. Throughout the podcast, Dr. J offers practical advice to those who are seeking a graduate degree in psychology and those wanting to become a licensed psychologist. For example, she states “definitely speak with enrollment staff about the whole licensing requirements for [your] state. Find out how many hours you need. Find out how the school assists in getting those hours or having connections to other businesses or other mental health professionals that can help get those hours.” Dr. J also recalls how many clinical hours were required to receive her New York psychologist license and how important it is to find the postdoc opportunities and those people who can sign off on your hours. When asked if she had any additional advice for those wanting to break into the field of psychology or open their own private practice, she offered these encouraging words “if you're willing to do it, step out on your own” and “I would say do it if you want it. If that's where your interest is at, don't let anything hold you back.” She also shared that she joined a group on Facebook called “Clinicians of Color [in Private Practice]” that helped her overcome some of the challenges of thinking through and starting her business. She said that there are many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) therapists in the group and many people who own their own private practice who share their information and stories which helped her and can help others wanting to open their own psychology private practice. Near the end of our discussion, I learned one thing that is unique about Dr. J, she loves giraffes. When she was younger, she remembers everybody liking a certain animal, usually one of the common animals like a cheetah or elephant. She loves giraffes because they are so unique and different. Dr. Jon Fielder joins Aaron to discuss his medical mission work in Africa. Dr. Fielder has served as a medical missionary to Africa for almost 20 years. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Chemistry from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, in 1999, he earned his Doctor of Medical degree (MD) from The John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, in 2002. Dr. Fielder was a physician at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya from 2002 to 2006, overseeing a US government-funded HIV program for nearly 2,000 patients. He served as a consultant physician at the Partners in Hope Medical Center in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 2009 to 2014. His handbook, Tuberculosis in the Era of HIV, has been used widely in several African countries. In 2010, Dr. Fielder co-founded African Mission Healthcare (AMH) with the investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Mark Gerson, a college friend, to support the work of mission hospitals across Africa. Hailey Cox was born and raised in Huntsville, AL, and is the third generation in her family to work in the Defense industry. She is currently a Capture & Proposal Senior Analyst at Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR), where she provides proposal leadership, training and hands-on process support in the development of competitive new business proposals for AR's Defense Business Unit. She provides both virtual and cross-site proposal guidance to proposal managers and teams on critical national defense programs, resulting in strategic wins for the company. She is experienced in delivering proposal management and process Just-in-Time (JIT) training. In just over two years at AR, Ms. Cox has received four Mission Success Awards for superior proposal leadership and support. She provides strong support in helping the Capture & Proposal group improve processes and performance, including maintaining data and analyzing proposal process health metrics , contributing to win/loss analyses, working process improvement initiatives, and developing useful proposal templates and worksheets. In addition to her regular job duties, Ms. Cox was selected by AR leadership to serve on three special projects/teams – (1) Ethics Liaison for the Ethics and Compliance Department, (2) Team Lead of the Strategy and Business Development Employee Engagement Team, and (3) AR Business Operating System (ARBOS), Huntsville Headquarters Leadership Council. She began her career as a Program Support Analyst at a small business and was then promoted to Business Development Manager. In this episode I interview Robin Pardo Roques about his interest and experience of learning and teaching European Languages, in particular Spanish, Italian and, indeed, English. Robin is Head of Modern Foreign Languages in a Secondary School in Derbyshire, England. In this interview, we discuss his chance meeting in a lift (an elevator) that led to a life abroad and a career teaching languages. Robin talks about how international exchanges, in particular the European Union's Erasmus Programme, led to adventures in football and culture before returning to the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue a career in language teaching. Robin talks about the politics and people that have lined his path to teaching, a Master of Arts (MA) in Education, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Spanish with Italian, and a CELTA teaching qualification, which enabled him to teach English as a Foreign Language, in the UK and in Europe. Although we discuss our mutual interest in sports, particularly football, it is in the context of language learning and the challenge of acquiring a new language for productive and active use, i.e. in real-life situations. I mention briefly my experiences of learning the Slovak language and how it helps me to put it to practical use if I ever hope to move from the earliest stages of language use to fluent and confident speech. Video version https://vimeo.com/492486581 About the Podcast Today I invite Brian Strobel, VP of Corporate Quality at Sierra Nevada Corporation (the aerospace company, not the beer guys) and author of the upcoming book, “Pursuing Excellence: A Values-Based, Systems Approach to Help Companies Become More Resilient” (2021), in addition to his previous book, “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (2015). We start off the conversation with the notion of “truth”, what is it and who holds it. In this regard, Brian and I agree that neither he or I are the holders of the truth when it comes to people, leadership, and followership – and that we both are skeptical of people who claim to be the holders of the truth when it comes to topics which are nuanced and contextual. After obtaining an AAS in Metrology and then a BA in Physics, and having considered signing up for the nuclear Navy, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for fifteen years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft. Highlights of his career include three carrier deployments, a two-year exchange tour with the Royal Australian Air Force, Quality Assurance Officer for the US Atlantic Fleet, and Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the largest squadron in the Marine Corps. The conversation continues to his transition out of the Marine Corps, to civilian life and the various companies he worked at the roles he held; and with each incarnation having increased responsibility and authority and his leadership skills matured and where honed. The experiences, stories, and insights gained that Brian shares through his civilian career hold a lot of wisdom and is a particularly good listen. And he shares details of his books; why he wrote them, who he wrote them for, what he hopes people gain from their reading them, and experiences of the writing process itself. So if anyone is thinking about becoming an author, there is some good guidance here. About Brian Strobel Brian has been leading people in operational environments for nearly thirty years. His initial academic pursuits trained him to be a physicist, but life had other plans. He’s served in roles from leading large-scale military operations to leading change across large companies and is certified as a trainer for Situational Leadership, a Professional Coach, a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and a Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence. Brian’s professional career started as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for 15 years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft. Following the Marines, he worked at various companies serving the Department of Defense including; Harris Corporation, Northrup Grumman, and L3 Technologies before landing his current role at Sierra Nevada Corporation. Within each company, and in changing companies, the roles Brian held increasingly had more responsibility. He is the author of “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (available on Amazon) published in 2015. Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Physics from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, his Master of Arts (MA) degree in Management from Webster University, and his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Executive Leadership at the University of San Diego School of Business where he studied under Ken Blanchard. Although Brian’s path has been different than most, he has always focused on pursuing excellence. In this podcast interview, Gabrielle Ferrara reveals how she decided which undergraduate and graduate schools to attend to help her become a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and therapist in New Jersey. She explains why she got into the field of social work and discusses her plans for the future including what it takes to get your Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) licensure in NJ. Gabrielle has experienced many “firsts” in the last six months. She has graduated with her master's degree, started a new job, got engaged to someone she dated in high school, and had her blog “Therapist Who Sees a Therapist” go live on Psychology Today with an article titled “Why Showing Emotion as a Therapist Is OK Sometimes.” She explains that it is OK to show empathy and compassion for others because we are all human. However, as a therapist, she needs to be aware of countertransference as it can be harmful to the client if it goes unchecked. As a rising mental health professional, Gabrielle admits that she is passionate about her career and providing the therapy that many people seek and need during these unprecedented times. In fact, she submitted a letter to COVID-19 frontline workers on The Mighty thanking them for their hard work and dedication. Cindy is as self-made a person as anyone I have ever met. After graduating high school and not having any particular skills that were as yet discovered nor the grades or money to get into University, she joined the United States Navy as an enlisted person. Perhaps she knew, and it’s just as likely she did not, that this single decision to join the Navy set her on a professional trajectory that is nothing short of amazing. Once in the Navy, her MOS was that of a cryptologic technician maintenance servicing communication equipment. As her initial planned time in the Navy was nearing the end, instead of leaving, she decided to remain and earn her Bachelor’s Degree (soon-after becoming an officer) and then her Master’s Degrees – eventually retiring from the Navy. She earned her Doctorate degree after leaving the Navy when she was 46. Her doctoral study, Knowledge Management and Innovation on Firm Performance of United States Ship Repair, provided her the opportunity to gain additional professional and academic expertise to facilitate improvements in organizational knowledge management. She had a daughter while stationed in Georgia which added yet another level of complexity; working hard to balance her professional career in the Navy with her studies and the new responsibilities of being a mother. Her driving force – wanting to never fail at any of it and making sure her daughter was provided for and brought-up in a stable environment. Patrick Hunt OAM commenced his coaching career in the New South Wales regional town of Tamworth. He then progressed to coaching New South Wales (NSW) state teams from 1972. Results for these teams were: gold medal for U20 Men's in 1979 and silver medals for U16 NSW Men in 1972, U16 NSW Men in 1973 and U20 NSW Country Men in 1978. In 1981, Patrick was appointed Head Coach of the National Basketball League team the Canberra Cannons. He soon after was appointed Men's Basketball Coach with the Australian Institute of Sport in July 1981, a position he held until 1993. During this period, with Head Coach Adrian Hurley, Patrick coached future Australian Olympic players including Mark Dalton, Luc Longley, Shane Heal, Mark Bradtke, Andrew Vlahov and Brett Maher.In the early 1980's, Patrick completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sports Studies from the University of Canberra, and from 1993 to 2008, Patrick was the Manager of National Player and Coach Development for Basketball Australia and Head Coach of the National Intensive Training Centre Program. In this role, Patrick assisted in developing an 'Australian way' of coaching and playing basketball and players to come out of this development included Lauren Jackson, Penny Taylor, Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova.In 2009, Patrick was appointed to the new position of Applied Technical Advancement Coach at the Australian Institute of Sport, working with Olympic Games and World Championship calibre coaches. In 2012, he led an international coach study tour of aspiring Australian Olympic coaches to the 2012 London Olympics.In 2013, he was appointed to the position of Senior Consultant, Australian Institute of Sport, High Performance Coaching and Leadership Section continuing his work with Olympic Games and World Championship coaches and leaders. He held this position until his retirement in August 2017.In 2010, Hunt was appointed President of FIBA's World Association of Basketball Coaches. Hunt was engaged by FIBA to scout and identify trends at 2006 and 2010 World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2014, he was appointed as Chairman of FIBA's Technical Commission, FIBA's most respected and influential Commission. Patrick continues to hold the FIBA positions with the World Association of Basketball Coaches and Technical Commission.From 2011, he has been a Program Director with the NBA/FIBA Basketball without Borders Camps Program for Europe, Asia, the America's and Global Camp Program whilst also coaching in the Africa Program. In 1995, Patrick was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for service to Basketball, particularly as a coach.
