This is a special live recording featuring professional runner and 3x national champion Annie Rodenfels, in conversation with WRS host and producer Cherie; that's me. We sat down at the Tracksmith track house in Boston on Sat., March 22, with a wonderful crowd on a beautiful morning to have this fantastic conversation. Annie Rodenfels is a born competitor. We get into how she progressed from being a high school soccer player who ran track and field, to a top NCAA DIII runner, and then to one of the best distance racers in the US. This is not a common trajectory: most DIII runners don't turn pro, let alone become one of the best in the pro field. Rodenfels has worked smart and hard to get here, developing her strength, skill, and ability. It's been a years long, step by step process, and all along the way, Rodenfels continues to rise to the occasion. Among her many professional career highlights, Rodenfels is the 2023 and 2024 5k National Champion, and the 2024 6k National Champion. And she won the first 10k she ever raced, the prestigious Boston 10k for Women, in 2023. Through it all, Rodenfels's training, mental game, confidence, and racing style has evolved, and she gets into it all. In February, Germany elected a new government. Friedrich Merz emerged as the new leader, but what are his energy and climate policies, and will Germany remain a climate leader in Europe and beyond?Joining Cleaning Up this week is Patrick Graichen, a former Energy and Climate minister in the last government, representing the Green Party. Prior to entering government, Patrick ran the think tank Agora Energiewende, working on energy from 2001 to 2012. With his deep expertise Patrick offers unique insights into the evolving political landscape and its potential impact on Germany, Europe, and beyond. Patrick has witnessed how shifting public opinion can stall progress, and was responsible for a highly contested policy to phase out gas boilers and phase in heat pumps, which ultimately caused him to quit government. Bryony Worthington asks Patrick what he learned from that phase, and digs into the big questions surrounding the German car industry, nuclear power and the future of gas. Leadership CircleCleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Division Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. This is a special live recording featuring 8x masters world record holder Sue McDonald, 61, in conversation with WRS host and producer Cherie; that's me. We sat down the Tracksmith track house in Boston on Sat., Feb 1, to a wonderful group who braved snowy weather for this terrific conversation. We get into how McDonald has stayed healthy and competitive over her 40-plus year career as a highly competitive athlete—in many sports. And how, at age 59, she looked over the record books and set to raising the bar for what's possible for women athletes her age. She targeted not one, but many world bests. In her training and preparation McDonald left no stone unturned, and she talks about it all. Plus what she's doing today to remain fast, and work to get faster. This conversation, and the terrific Q&A that followed, provides many useful tips and takeaways to use in your own training and racing. Whether you're a masters racer, or you aspire to be one someday, there's a lot here for you. Sue McDonald currently holds 8 world records: 400m and 800m indoor and outdoor; 1 mile indoor; 300m hurdles; steeplechase, and heptathlon. She was a heptathlete through college, and became a nationally competitive pole vaulter in her post-collegiate years. She has also competed as a triathlete, and in 2018, she ran the Boston Marathon (the storm year!). In 2023 McDonald set 9 world records for 60-64 masters women and was named the USATF Masters Track and Field Athlete of the Year. To put her records in a different context, McDonald set or reset 15 world records over a 16 month period. Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Dr. Georgia Ede, MD, is a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist based in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA. Her interest in nutrition arose after discovering a new way of eating that reversed several bewildering health problems she had developed in her early 40s, including fibromyalgia, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Dr. Ede acquired her bachelor's in biology from Carleton College in Minnesota. Then, for seven years, she worked as a research assistant in the fields of biochemistry, diabetes, and wound healing. She earned her MD from the University of Vermont and completed her residency in general adult psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital in 2002. After five years in general practice, she joined Harvard University Health Services from 2007 to 2013 as a staff psychopharmacologist and was the first psychiatrist there to offer nutrition consultation as an option to students, faculty, and staff with mental health concerns. From 2013 to 2018, she was the psychiatrist for Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she provided nutrition consultation as well as medication and psychotherapy services to Smith students. Now, Dr. Ede devotes all of her time to nutritional psychiatry and directs her efforts on studying, writing, and speaking about the strong scientific connection between food and brain health. Dr. Ede writes frequently for Psychology Today and has her own website at Diagnosis: Diet. In 2018, she independently published a paper in the Journal of Evolution and Health.     In this discussion, Drs. Tony and Georgia talk about: (05:23) How Georgia, a conventionally trained psychologist, came to realize the centrality of diet for mental/general health (11:45) Why the field of Psychology at large has not yet figured out that diet is a key factor in mental health (17:32) When/how Georgia started implementing nutrition into her practice (21:37) What ketosis is and how it improves mental health (23:48) The connection between mental health and metabolic health (28:48) How long it takes for the keto diet to kick in with noticeable results (30:32) Whether people with Autism or ADHD can improve their conditions with the keto diet (39:57) An example of a person suffering from cognitive decline who improved their mental state with the keto diet (45:37) Whether a person can optimize brain health on a plant-based diet (50:11) How to determine the number of grams of carbohydrates you can eat per day (56:32) Getting sufficient electrolytes on a carnivore/keto diet (59:50) Exogenous Ketones Thank you for listening to Protecting Your Nest. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Colleen Tartow about the questions to answer before and during the development of an AI program Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? When you say "AI Program", what are the organizational, technical, and strategic elements that it encompasses? How does the idea of an "AI Program" differ from an "AI Product"? What are some of the signals to watch for that indicate an objective for which AI is not a reasonable solution? Who needs to be involved in the process of defining and developing that program? What are the skills and systems that need to be in place to effectively execute on an AI program? "AI" has grown to be an even more overloaded term than it already was. What are some of the useful clarifying/scoping questions to address when deciding the path to deployment for different definitions of "AI"? Organizations can easily fall into the trap of green-lighting an AI project before they have done the work of ensuring they have the necessary data and the ability to process it. What are the steps to take to build confidence in the availability of the data? Even if you are sure that you can get the data, what are the implementation pitfalls that teams should be wary of while building out the data flows for powering the AI system? What are the key considerations for powering AI applications that are substantially different from analytical applications? The ecosystem for ML/AI is a rapidly moving target. What are the foundational/fundamental principles that you need to design around to allow for future flexibility? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen AI programs implemented? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on powering AI systems? When is AI the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of your work at VAST Data? Over here at Developer Voices it seemed fun, inspired, and just crazy enough to work.We had him on the podcast a few months back just as that journey was beginning, and since he launched his first startup things have changed,. The reception has been better than he expected and the plan has been updated to go all-in on idea number one. But why? What's changed? What happened between brainstorming 4 ideas and launching #1 into the world? How is he figuring out what problems to solve, and how is he coping with the workload of being a solopreneur with a business idea and only himself to rely on?It's definitely time for an update, and to see what we can learn from a fellow geek who wants to start a business, but most of all wants to build technology that people find useful and valuable. What Happens When The Big Man Passes On? After Messiah With Aakar Patel

Most of us do not colour code our threat levels. But nations do.Following 9/11, the Homeland Security Advisory System in America in 2002 came up with the warning system that we all know and love today in our TV shows—green, blue, yellow, orange and red, depending, obviously, on the severity of the threat.Government officials plan and practice their responses to each threat level—war games for the bureaucrats. What if the threat was not a threat in the conventional sense of some action that the nation must defend, but the threat that comes from nothing at all? One example is say, the leader of the nation passes and the administration suddenly loses its alpha and is left rudderless and the panjandrums receive no instructions on what to do next.Building an entire novel built upon this possibility as a foundational premise, is my guest today, a journalist, author, analyst, and commentator, and now, novelist. Aakar Patel, known for his extensive body of work in politics, culture, and political economics, has ventured into the world of fiction with his debut novel—After Messiah.A novel is a remarkable canvas for expressing ideas, freeing the author from the constraints of traditional media like newspapers.Newspapers, for instance, are required to simply and clearly report what happened. But sometimes as a newsperson, you get to know about things that you cannot report by the usual rules of reportage. Such as off-the-record information that might be of great importance. The edit page of the newspaper is for such things— where you might reveal or hint at something, having editorialised it.Aakar Patel's work raises essential questions about the role of the bureaucracy and the responsibilities it bears. His superior skills in prose ensure that his novel is not just thought-provoking but also an effortless—and very often funny—read. Aakar is not one to stay snugly inside the box; he busts out the whole “eager to learn and illuminate” ethic and thus, escapes the confines of convention.Today, he unveils this debut novel. While After Messiah might be his debut novel, this is not his debut appearance on The Literary City. He is my first returning guest in almost two years of this show. He joins me from his home in Bangalore, a city we share. PREVIOUS APPEARANCE: https://litcity.in/e14-sptfyABOUT AAKAR PATELHe is a syndicated columnist who has edited English and Gujarati newspapers. 40 Years of For You

dance / music / sex / romance is fast approaching its third year, so to celebrate, we're going...backwards? That's right, to mark the 40th anniversary of Prince's debut album, I thought now was the perfect time to go ahead with an idea I've been toying with for a while: our own sub-series of review podcasts looking at each of Prince's albums in isolation. I'm doing this for a few reasons. First, it's a way to bring those of you who have been listening to the podcasts but not reading the blog into the loop on my chronological Prince project--and also a way for me to work through some of these albums before I can get to it with my glacially paced writing schedule. Second, I've known from the beginning of this project that if I really wanted to do Prince's catalogue justice, I would need to incorporate more voices and perspectives than just my own. We all have our biases and blind spots, and as a Prince fan I am acutely aware that one person's sentimental favorite can be another's unlistenable mess (and vice versa). That's why I asked my friends Harold and KaNisa, both of whose encyclopaedic knowledge of Prince's career dwarfs my own, to join me. I think you'll find that our tastes and opinions both intersect and diverge in a lot of interesting ways, which allowed us--and hopefully, will allow you--to take a different perspective on some of these songs and the context in which they were created. I hope you enjoy this new approach to an album that remains underappreciated in Prince's catalogue. If you do, I hope you'll subscribe to the podcast on your streaming app of choice (iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play), and if you're so inclined, leave a review! No matter what, thanks for listening, and see you again soon. 00:00:00   "For You” (1976 Recording) 00:01:01   Harold's Previous Appearance on d / m / s / r 00:01:10   The Prince Podcast 00:01:24   KaNisa's Tumblr 00:04:50   Duane Tudahl on d / m / s / r 00:06:54   "Soft and Wet” (from For You, 1978) 00:09:10   Here's Where to Read the Blog Entries on For You 00:09:19   The New Prince Issue of Wax Poetics 00:11:08   "I'm Under Your Spell" by Mind & Matter, written by and featuring the Artist Later Known as Jimmy Jam (1977 Recording, available on Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound) 00:14:35   "Everybody Dance" by Chic (from Chic, 1977) 00:14:46   "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King (from Smooth Talk, 1977) 00:15:15   "Mary Jane" by Rick James and the Stone City Band (from Come Get It!, 1978) 00:18:35   "The Closer I Get to You" by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway (from Blue Lights in the Basement, 1977) 00:19:04   "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams (from You Light Up My Life, 1978) 00:21:06   "You and I" by Rick James and the Stone City Band (from Come Get It!) 00:22:54   Now This is More Like It © Warner Bros. 00:23:10 Getting There © Warner Bros. 00:24:37 Prince Meets His Public, 1978 Photo stolen from Noisey 00:29:58 "Well, I'm going to pick up a flute pretty soon." 00:32:12   "Just as Long as We're Together” (1977 Recording) 00:41:28   "Funkytown” by Lipps, Inc. (from Mouth to Mouth, 1979) 00:48:47   "For You" (from For You) 00:56:10   "For You" (1976 Recording) 01:01:08   "In Love” (from For You) 01:12:40   "Soft and Wet" (from For You) 01:16:08   "Soft and Wet" (1976 Recording) 01:19:22   The Futurama Fry Squint 01:20:58   The Bonobo Statue that Scarred Zach for Life https://www.instagram.com/p/BFaMU6xSsMn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 01:30:00 "Crazy You” (from For You) 01:32:40   Zach's Original Post on "Crazy You" 01:38:55   "Just as Long as We're Together" (from For You) 01:47:27   "Jelly Jam” (1977 Recording) 01:52:25   "Baby” (from For You) 01:56:49   "School of Life" by Tommy Tate (1972 Single) 02:01:29   "Eye Hate U” (from The Gold Experience, 1995)
