Tightrope: Balancing Grace and Truth in 1 Corinthians Week 1: “Unity in Diversity” Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10-17, 12:12-27 **POINT #1 – PUTTING JESUS FIRST HELPS US KEEP OUR BALANCE ** 1 Corinthians 1:10-15 (NLT) I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. 11 For some members of Chloe's household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. 12 Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,” or “I follow only Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not! 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 for now no one can say they were baptized in my name. POINT #2 – UNITY, NOT UNIFORMITY 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (NLT) The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 14 Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. ** POINT #3 – PLAY YOUR PART** 1 Corinthians 12:15-27 (NLT) If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don't need you.” The head can't say to the feet, “I don't need you.” 22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 27 All of you together are Christ's body, and each of you is a part of it. Think About It. How can keeping Jesus as the center of our faith help prevent division in our church community? What are some practical ways we can intentionally balance grace and truth in our daily relationships within the church? How do you see your unique gifts and role contributing to the health and unity of our church body? What are ways churches or groups unintentionally promote uniformity rather than unity? How can we avoid that trap? When conflicts arise because of differences, how can the Holy Spirit and our shared focus on Jesus help us “stay steady” and work through those challenges? STAND Week 4: Stand in Prayer and Perseverance Ephesians 6:18-20 NLT “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God's mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike. I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God's ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.” I. Prayer Keeps You Connected to the Source “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.” —Ephesians 6:18 NLT "Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing." — John 15:4-5 (NLT) 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT): "Never stop praying." II. Prayer Keeps You Spiritually Awake “Stay alert…” —Ephesians 6:18 “Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”Matthew 26:41 (NLT) III. Prayer Is a Weapon for Others, Not Just Yourself “…and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere” —Ephesians 6:18 James 5:16 (NLT) “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Galatians 6:2 (NLT) Share each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. IV. Prayer Fuels Boldness in the Mission Ephesians 6:19 (NLT) “And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God's mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.” James 5:16 (NLT) “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” Colossians 4:2 (NLT) “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” Think About It. How does your current prayer life reflect the idea of staying connected to God as your source of strength and guidance? In what areas of your life do you need to be more spiritually awake and alert? How can prayer help sharpen your awareness? Who are three people in your life that need your prayers right now? How can you stand in the gap for them through intercession? Reflect on a time when prayer fueled boldness in your mission. How did it impact your courage and actions? What practical steps will you take this week to build a consistent rhythm of prayer and persevere in it, not only for yourself but also for others? STAND ** Week 3: Stand Ready for Battle** "For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." — Ephesians 6:15-17 (NLT) I. Wear the Shoes of Readiness—Be Grounded in the Gospel “...For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.” —Ephesians 6:15 "Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us." — Romans 5:1 (NLT) "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!" — Isaiah 52:7 (NLT) II. Take Up the Shield of Faith—Block the Flaming Arrows “In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:16 "For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith." — 1 John 5:4 (NLT) "But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you." — Psalm 56:3 (NLT) III. Put on the Helmet of Salvation—Guard Your Mind “Put on salvation as your helmet…” —Ephesians 6:17 "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." — Romans 12:2 (NLT) "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NLT) IV. Take Up the Sword of the Spirit—Fight with God's Word “…and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” —Ephesians 6:17 "But Jesus told him, 'No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.''" — Matthew 4:4 (NLT) "Jesus responded, 'The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.''" — Matthew 4:7 (NLT) "‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" — Matthew 4:10 (NLT) "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." — Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) Application / Challenge: Use What God Has Given You Gospel Grounding: Write one sentence that summarizes the gospel. Say it aloud every morning this week as your foundation. Shield of Faith: Name one lie you're tempted to believe. Then find and write down one Scripture promise that tells the truth—and post it where you'll see it daily. Helmet of Salvation: Spend five intentional minutes each day reflecting on who you are in Christ. Let His truth shape your thoughts. Sword of the Spirit: Memorize one Bible verse that speaks directly to a struggle you're facing—and use it in prayer and conversation this week. Think about it. What specific steps can you take each morning to ground yourself in the gospel, ensuring you're ready to face the day's challenges? Identify one lie you've been tempted to believe recently. What Scripture can you apply to counter that lie and strengthen your faith? Think about a situation where negative thoughts or doubts overwhelmed you. How can you put on the "helmet of salvation" to guard your mind in similar situations moving forward? Choose a current struggle in your life. What Bible verse can you memorize and declare to actively fight back with the "sword of the Spirit"? STAND Week 2: Stand in Truth and Righteousness Ephesians 6:14 (NLT) - "Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness.” Ephesians 6:10 (NLT) says, "Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." I. Stand Firm with the Belt of Truth Ephesians 6:14a (NLT) says, "Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth." John 17:17 (NLT), "Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” Isaiah 40:8 (NLT) declares, "The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever." John 8:32 (NLT): "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 14:6 (NLT): "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." II. Protect Your Heart with the Breastplate of Righteousness Ephesians 6:14b (NLT) says, "...and the body armor of God's righteousness." (2 Corinthians 5:21, NLT): "For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ." (James 1:22, NLT): "But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." III. Truth and Righteousness Work Together Romans 12:2 (NLT) says, "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think." Ephesians 4:14 (NLT) says, "Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won't be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching." This Week's Challenge: Truth: Read a chapter of Scripture daily—start with John or Psalm 119. Righteousness: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of compromise. Confess, repent, and take one step in obedience. Reflection Questions: In what areas of your life do you find it challenging to stand firm in God's truth? How can you actively guard your heart with righteousness in your daily routine? When faced with cultural pressures, how do you discern between personal opinions and God's eternal truths? What step can you take this week to strengthen both your knowledge of God's truth and your practice of righteousness? STAND Stand in Strength I. The Strength to Stand Begins with God, Not You. “A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10 NLT “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.” Isaiah 40:29 NLT … he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” … 2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT II. Our Battle Is Not Against Flesh and Blood. “Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 NLT “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NLT “In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” Colossians 2:15 NLT III. Standing Requires Surrender. “Not my will, but yours be done” Luke 22:42 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. God Doesn't Call You to Fight Alone—He Calls You to Stand Covered. : “Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:13 NLT “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” Exodus 14:14 “No weapon formed against you shall prosper” Isaiah 54:17 “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” 1 John 4:4 Are You Standing in God's Strength—or Striving in Your Own? In what areas of your life have you been relying on your own strength instead of surrendering to God's power? How does understanding that our battle is spiritual, not against flesh and blood, change the way you approach challenges and conflicts? Week 2: Grateful For Grace Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 // 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 Write Up: We are God's handiwork and were created in order to do good works that He planned for us to take part in. These good works are not executed to receive the love of God. These good works are the result of God's good grace toward us. We should live lives of gratitude because we are loved by God as His beloved creation. Think: I can do nothing to make God love me more. I can do nothing to make God love me less. Feel: I am so grateful for God's grace in my life that I will gladly take part in His designed plan for my life. Do: I should consider all of the reasons I have to be grateful and make a point of thanking God for it. Discussion Questions: What are some examples of God's grace in scripture? How can we give our weaknesses to God? Where is a place that you see God's grace in your life? Can you think of a time where your weakness made you more dependent on God? EVER WONDER WHY?—7 DOES GOD LOVE ME? For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Jeremiah 29:13-14 NIV Just because God feels distant doesn't mean God is absent. … an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Religion is our attempt to earn God's approval by following all the rules. For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. Titus 2:11 NIV charis: the unmerited goodwill and favor of God The grace that saves you is also the grace that sustains you. For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age … Titus 2:11-12 NIV How Does God's Grace Change Us? The focus of religion is outward. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.” Matthew 23:25-26 NIV The power of grace is inward. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,. How long will my enemy triumph over me? Psalm 13:1-2 NIV How do you grow to trust in a God you can't see? You question. “We're closer to God when we're asking questions than when we think we hold all the answers.” “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Mark 9:22 NIV God would rather you run to Him with your questions than run from Him with your doubts! Choose to trust God, even when you don't understand. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” Matthew 5:29 NIV “‘They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire …'” Jeremiah 7:31 NIV Hell exists for God to righteously punish Satan. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. WHY DID GOD LET IT HAPPEN? • “If God is not able to prevent evil, then He is feeble. • If God is not willing to prevent evil, then He's not all good. • If God is both willing and able to prevent evil, then why does evil exist?” Epicurus Christianity makes sense of, gives meaning to, and offers a solution for the evil and suffering we experience. They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?” 12 This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. 13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. 14 All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishment Psalm 73:11-14 NIV If God is loving, why would He allow suffering? If love is a choice, suffering is a possibility. If there is no God, who decides there's evil? Why do bad things happen to good people? … “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46 NIV So why does God allow suffering? For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Sermon Notes UNSTOPPABLE IDIOTS BECOME UNSTOPPABLE. OUR MISSION: LOVE, CONNECT AND GROW THROUGH KNOWING GOD AND SERVING OUR COMMUNITY. It was (God) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of ministry... Ephesians 4:11-12a• GOD DOESN’T CALL THE PREPARED, BUT HE PREPARES THE CALLED.When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 idiotes (id-ee-o'-tace); an ignoramus, an ignorant or unlearned person, an idiot. IDIOTS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH JESUS 1) GIVE THEIR WHOLE LIVES TO HIM. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"... Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:8, 10b-112) BECOME UNSTOPPABLE.Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God." Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:44-47• GOD WANTS US UNITED. • SATAN WANTS US DIVIDED.All the believers were divided. They didn’t have much of anything in common. Hoarding their possessions and goods they kept as much as they could for themselves. Every now and then, if it wasn’t football season and they weren’t too tired, they would come to church for an hour and leave early to beat the traffic. They loved Jesus when it was convenient for them, yet they were despised by people for their hypocrisy. And very few people got saved.
