In this message we consider what is sometimes referred to as John's "Test of Affection." We know true believers if they love God and love one another. This "test" is based on Jesus' answer regarding the greatest commandment (Mk. 12:28-31). The message will attempt to provide a definition of love as well as some ways in which we can love God and love one another.
Love God, Love Others (Hebrews 8:6-13)

After Middletown High's baseball team won its third consecutive regional championship, coach Andy Baker and senior center fielder Cory Godlove are this week's guests on The Final Score podcast. Baker and Godlove chat with host Greg Swatek about the Knights' momentous and memorable 5-4, come-from-behind victory over Century in the Class 2A West Region I championship game. It marked the third straight year Middletown had beaten Century in a regional final. The discussion centers around Baker's longevity in his job and the Knights' ability to pull through and overcome adversity. Godlove talks about being a three-year varsity player, a three-time regional champ and a state champ with the Knights back in 2024. Baker and Godlove also talk about why this has been such a successful season for Middletown baseball. Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to talk about the state playoffs for Frederick County teams in baseball, softball and lacrosse.

“When Haiti plays Brazil, Haitians will feel equal. Football gives even the weakest and the poorest a fighting chance. That is profound.” — Dimitry Elias LégerYesterday, Simon Kuper defined the World Cup as a religious feast for all of humanity. Today, Dimitry Elias Léger asks whether God is watching. His new novel, Death of the Soccer God, is a fictional reimagining of the most famous goal in American World Cup history — scored in 1950 by a non-American. Joe Gaëtjens was a half-German, half-Haitian teenager sent to New York to study, not to play football. He picked up the game in Central Park, somehow (as a non-American) made it onto the US team at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, and scored the goal that famously beat England one–nil in Belo Horizonte. England was so heavily favoured that the football-mad BBC didn't even send a reporter.Léger — a Haitian-born writer and (for his sins) an Arsenal fan — spent three weeks in Brazil researching the novel, two of them in Belo Horizonte. The philosophical question at the core of the book asks if God loves Haiti. Does God, Léger wonders, have a particular affection for the poorest people on earth? And now, for the first time in decades, Haiti have qualified for the World Cup. In the United States of all places. They're in the toughest group — with Morocco and, yes, Brazil. For ninety minutes, Haiti will be the Seleção's equal. The democratic spectacle of football, Léger says, gives even the weakest and the poorest a fighting chance. God might even be watching. Five Takeaways• The Most Famous Goal in American World Cup History Was Scored by a Haitian: Belo Horizonte, 1950. The US beat England one–nil. The scorer was Joe Gaëtjens — a half-German, half-Haitian teenager sent to New York to study, not to play football. He picked up the game in Central Park. He couldn't tell his parents he was playing for America in the World Cup. The BBC didn't even send a reporter. England was so heavily favoured it wasn't supposed to matter.• Football Is the Only Arena Where Foot-Eye Coordination Is the Dominant Skill: We use our hands for everything. Football inverts it. That's why it seems miraculous when Pelé or Maradona or Messi does what they do. The feet are not supposed to be that graceful. It's more art than science, more jazz than chess.• Pelé Looks Like a Typical Haitian Kid: The first televised World Cup final was 1958 in Stockholm. Pelé was sixteen and scored a hat-trick. He looked like a majority of the planet's population. That helped football explode globally. He introduced the bicycle kick, the samba flair. Brazil won three World Cups in twelve years.• Papa Doc Disappeared Him: In real life, Gaëtjens returned to Haiti after his glory years, ran afoul of the dictator François Duvalier, and was disappeared — never seen again. In the novel, the hero confronts the dictator face to face. Dictators have always used football to drape themselves in glory. The beautiful game has a very dark side.• Haiti Play Brazil This Summer: Haiti have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in decades. They're in the toughest group — with Brazil and Morocco. For ninety minutes, Haiti will be Brazil's equal. Football gives even the weakest and the poorest a fighting chance. That is profound. Pastor Jennifer McGill What does it really mean to love like Jesus? In this message, we explore Jesus' words in Luke 6 and the powerful call to a love that goes beyond comfort, preference, and convenience. Faith can quietly carry pressure, especially for high-capacity believers who fear losing relevance if they slow down. This episode gently exposes the tension between performance and belonging, and invites an identity-level recalibration rooted in adoption, not achievement. There is a version of faith that looks strong on the outside and strained on the inside. You serve. You lead. You produce. And beneath the devotion is a question many high-capacity believers rarely say out loud:If I stop performing, will God still choose me?This episode explores the tension between spiritual performance and secure belonging — especially for those who fear losing relevance if they slow down.Inside this conversation:• Earned love vs. adopted love• How usefulness quietly becomes identity• Why spiritual pressure mirrors performance culture• The nervous system cost of believing love must be maintained• Fruit as evidence — not currencyScriptural anchors (NLT):• Ephesians 1:5 — Adoption decided in advance• Romans 8:15 — Fearful striving vs. secure belonging• John 15:4 — “Remain in me” as invitation, not auditionPsychological + identity themes:• Spiritual burnout and pressure• Identity misalignment in faith communities• Performance conditioning in high-capacity believers• Presence over performance in relationship with GodIdentity-Level Recalibration (ILR) is not another mindset tactic or productivity strategy. It is the root-level recalibration that stabilizes identity so behavior no longer compensates for insecurity. When identity stabilizes vertically:• Anxiety decreases• Leadership steadies• Burnout softens• Fruit flows naturallyVertical Alignment reminds us:You do not produce to remain loved. You remain loved — and fruit follows.Today's Micro Recalibration:In your next quiet moment with God, do not ask what you should accomplish.Ask:If I produced nothing this week, would You still delight in me?Pause.Let your body register the answer. You are adopted. You are known. You are loved before you move.Explore Identity-Level Recalibration→ Schedule a conversation with Julie to see if The Recalibration is a fit for you→ Learn about The Recalibration Cohort→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/031326.cfmFather Chris Alar, MIC, explains that the Ten Commandments form the moral foundation of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, rooted in natural law written on every human heart. The first three commandments shed light on how we should be loving God, while the remaining seven explain loving neighbor. Jesus summarized this dual commandment: Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.Father Chris clarifies common misconceptions about how Catholics number the commandments. Catholics follow the tradition of St. Augustine, while Protestants follow the Greek Fathers. Though numbered differently, the substance remains identical. The prohibition against graven images falls under the first commandment for Catholics, and is not treated as a separate second commandment.Father Chris highlights how Jesus transformed the commandment to love neighbor. In Leviticus, the context referred only to fellow Jews. Jesus removed all boundaries, declaring that religion consists of loving God and all people. Mercy emerges when these two commandments come together : loving the unlovable, forgiving the unforgivable — loving as God loves, and loving those whom God loves. This message defines a core component of the Marian Fathers' mission. Saint Paul taught that whoever loves their neighbor has fulfilled the law, while whoever hates their neighbor, yet claims to love God, is a liar. Mercy does not require friendship with those who have caused harm, but it does mean placing them prayerfully in God's hands without seeking vengeance. ★ Support this podcast ★
What does the Torah actually say about immigrants — and what does it demand of us? Rabbi Jeff Salkin sits down with one of the Jewish world's leading theologians, Rabbi Shai Held, to explore the Bible's most repeated commandment: love the ger — the stranger, the sojourner, the immigrant. Held argues that "immigrant" is not just the most accurate translation of ger, it's the most morally urgent one. When the Torah says to love the immigrant, it's making a claim on us every single day. Together, Salkin and Held trace the Torah's radical counter-vision to Egypt — a society built not on cruelty and power, but on empathy and care for the vulnerable. They explore what it means to imitate God by loving those whom God loves, why the stories of Abraham, Sarah, and Lot are really lessons in empathy, and how the Holocaust's legacy shapes the Jewish moral imagination. And they end with the question Rabbi Held says belongs on the doorpost of every house of worship in the world: It's not whether you believe in God. It's whom your God loves. Rabbi Shai Held is President, Dean, and Chair of Jewish Thought at the Hadar Institute, which he co-founded. His most recent book is Judaism Is About Love: Recovering the Heart of Jewish Life. What if you've been seeing your relationship with God allwrong? We're in a season of renewal at Trinity, and it starts with understanding your true purpose. Jesus gave us two simple commands: love God with everything you have, and love people like He does. This isn't about checking spiritual boxes or doing what you "have to" do. It's aninvitation into the most important relationship of your life — and a calling to live sacrificially for others. Today we're discovering what it looks like to move from obligation to joy, from religion to relationship.
Firm Foundation x Maverick City Music was in my spirit & I had to really sit with the words.“Rain came, Wind blew, my house was built on you! And I'm safe with you, I'm going to make it through.”•It was a testimony to my current situation. In a physical aspect it meant something too. This is a vulnerable moment with my ABBA of me encouraging myself because all I had was this song and tears. A desperation of wanting to be mended back together!•If you're filled with the Holy Spirit and worship the King of Kings whisper my name in your prayers, please. I just want to be loved back whole by God.Everyone who is dealing with heart break or going through a healing process: you are not alone. It's not easy or a linear process, but run to God! Nobody else is going to let you vent 100 million times about the same thing, nobody is going to give you advice that's meaningful enough to stop the pain, nobody is powerful enough to remove the attachments, or erase the memory to make it like it never happened. Only God can do these things so lean on Him.
In a culture confused about manhood, strength, and leadership, this episode of Man Up, Already! calls men back to a biblical vision of masculinity—one rooted not in domination or passivity, but in responsibility, sacrifice, courage, and love.Host John C. Puritz explores why the absence of strong, grounded, God-centered men has left families fractured, communities weakened, and society searching for direction. This conversation challenges cultural extremes and reframes masculinity through Scripture, character, and purpose.Biblical masculinity isn't about control—it's about stewardship. It's not about silence—it's about presence. And it's not about ego—it's about obedience to God.

"Love" is one of the most used—and most argued-about—words in our culture. With over 2.1 billion hashtags on Instagram and 76 million posts declaring "love is love," it's clear that everyone has a definition. But does God? Christians are often told we're "not loving enough" when we speak about God's design for marriage, the reality of biological sex, or the sanctity of life. We're reminded to "speak the truth in love"—sometimes as a correction, sometimes as a weapon. But before we argue about how to love, we have to ask a more important question: What is love, according to God? In today's episode, we'll unpack what Scripture tells us to love, what God explicitly tells us not to love, and how to discern whether love is truly present—or merely being used as a slogan.
