Segment 1: • Losing Focus: DeYoung warns that modern Christianity is missing the mark on the basics. • Bait and Switch Tactics: Campaigns like He Gets Us alter Jesus' message and dilute the Gospel. • The Great Commission Is Bigger Than You: We've made it too individualistic—time to recalibrate. Segment 2: • A Quasi-Commission? DeYoung warns that drifting from the Gospel's centrality distorts our mission. • Course Correction Needed: Have we overcomplicated or misapplied Jesus' final command? • Stay on Track: Let's resist the drift and return to the true heart of the Great Commission. Segment 3: • Canadian Minister Rejects ‘Savior'—this reflects a growing movement to soften Christianity. • The Seeker-Sensitive Trap: Avoiding talk of sin is an unbiblical strategy to avoid offending people. • Truth Hurts, but Heals: Jesus didn't sugarcoat His message, and neither should we. Segment 4: • A Pastor Who Doesn't Like the Word ‘Savior'? What Bible is he reading? • Twisting Theology: This minister prefers his own definition of Savior—problematic at best. • The Real Stumbling Block: The Gospel is offensive because it confronts sin—but that's exactly why we need it. ___ Thanks for listening! Show Notes In this bonus episode of OCF Crosspoint, podcast host Josh Jackson continues his discussion with CH(CPT) Michael Will, USA (Ret.), focusing on the theme of hardship and suffering. The conversation delves into defining suffering, recognizing its various sources—such as persecution, sin, and the actions of others—and understanding its impact. They address the dangers of comparison, which can undermine endurance, and emphasize the importance of acknowledging our lack of control as a starting point for discovering God's purpose in suffering. The episode offers practical advice for navigating hardship, including perseverance and concentrating on what we can control. It also explores the purpose behind suffering, such as being shaped into the image of Christ and learning obedience. The conversation touches on the challenging yet transformative concept of rejoicing in suffering and finding hope amidst adversity. Silence and listening to God are highlighted as crucial practices in these times, along with the importance of seeking God's will through prayer. Additionally, the discussion covers the role of discipline and training in preparing for suffering, encouraging believers to embrace it with a mindset of rejoicing. By viewing suffering as something appointed by God rather than accidental, believers can appreciate the transformative work God accomplishes through these hardships. Points to Ponder As you listen to this conversation with CH Will, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: What personal experiences have shaped your definition of suffering? How have you seen God use suffering in your own life and in the lives of others? What Bible verses encourage you in the midst of hardship? Michael talks about prayer as “the most effective tool” in his toolkit. What additional tools can you use when facing hard times?

This lesson will focus on Gen. 1:1-5. We will address the question, "What is this light that God created on day one?" Is it related to Einstein's theory or what some Creation Science scholars call the Big Bang? Or is it something else? Might it be related to Yeshua the Messiah? It says God created light on DAY one. Was it 24 hours? The Hebrew word translated into English as "day" is the word YOM. How long is a YOM? 24 hours? What is the picture God is painting? Finally, we will study an amazing correlation between the 1st book of the Bible and the last, the book of Revelation. Genesis 1 deals with God creating a new heaven and a new earth. Then we read in Rev. 21:1 "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea." Both deal with a new heaven and a new earth. Both books deal with a beginning. Is there more? Just wait and see!! What is most important Bible verse? What Bible verse should be ranked number one in God's Word? Can you guess? A recognized scholar and a man devoted to the God of Abraham, Dennis Prager, has a cool audio lesson where Dennis brings up his view. He is a devout religious Jew but his Torah teaching is meant for both religious Jews of Judaism and religious Christians. Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come."11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.14 "The fruit for which your soul longedhas gone from you,and all your delicacies and your splendorsare lost to you, never to be found again!"15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,16 "Alas, alas, for the great citythat was clothed in fine linen,in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls!17 For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste."And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,"What city was like the great city?"19 And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,"Alas, alas, for the great citywhere all who had ships at seagrew rich by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been laid waste.20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!"21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,"So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more;22 and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will be heard in you no more, and a craftsman of any craftwill be found in you no more, and the sound of the millwill be heard in you no more,23 and the light of a lampwill shine in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bridewill be heard in you no more, for your merchants were the great ones of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth."When the "He Gets Us" ends with "Jesus does not teach hate!; we have to ask, "What Bible are they reading and do they know Jesus?" http://www.battle4freedom.com/tmp/JesusTeachesHate.pdfhttps://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus+18%3A21&version=ESVMoreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. Guests: Sherry Smith, Tricia Panetti, and Emery Petrof Emery - research from the Mayo Clinic - expressing gratitude is associated with a host of mental and physical benefits - studies have shown that feeling thankful can improve sleep, mood, and immunity in today's world. Gratitude can decrease depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain and disease. If a pill could do this, everybody would take it! Furthermore, a person can not feel both gratitude and anxiety at the same time. Sherry - the most important factor in developing gratitude in my children is modeling it for them to see! Tricia - the attitude of gratitude starts with me - we can't expect others to have something that we don't. Gratitude starts with being aware of your surroundings - the world doesn't revolve around you! Emery - we start every prayer with gratitude - and just because we can, doesn't mean that we should. We also look for opportunities to give back to others. Sherry - a heart of gratitude is developed through hands that serve. Tricia - learning to verbalize gratitude/appreciation/thankfulness is vital for our kids. Time in the car can be a great training opportunity with your kids! Looking for an opportunity to serve the Lord and your community, connect with the incredible ministries of GraceBridge and Operation Christmas Child. Also appreciate what God is doing in and through the lives of our PCA students/community through Minimester collections, service opportunities, and evangelistic outreach. What Bible verses/stories come to mind when you talk about gratitude with your family? 1 Thessalonians 5:16 - Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Proverbs 12:25 - Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. Philippians 4:6 - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Imagine sitting in a job interview and your prospective boss tells you two things. First, he says the position he wants to hire you for will be challenging and filled with constant opposition. But, second, you will find the assignment incredibly fulfilling–and through it, you'll experience an intimacy with Christ you hadn't prior. Would you take it? As you consider this role, which part of the man's conversation will you reflect on most? As Christ-followers, we're faced with this question daily. Which will we give greatest emphasis–the opposition we'll inevitably face, or the God who stands with us, refines and strengthens us, and makes Himself known to us through it all? In this episode, host Jennifer Slattery speaks with Bible study writer Kathy Howard on the beauty that can come through opposition. (Scroll down for discussion/reflective questions.) How might viewing opposition as an opportunity to experience Jesus on a deeper level impact your journey? What steps might you take to experience God's presence in difficult seasons? What can you learn from Paul's response in Acts 16? What does it mean to have an eternal focus? How can maintaining an eternal focus during seasons of opposition strengthen your soul to remain faithful? How can anyone think that John 8:1-11 shouldn't be in the Bible? 3. Who was Simon of Cyrene, and did he have a role after carrying the cross for Jesus? 4. Why does it seem like end times prophecies in the Bible always mention how close it was? 5. What Bible translation should I read from? Is the Jehovah's Witness Bible okay to use?

WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN A BIBLE TRANSLATION MAKE?The Story of the Bible - Part 2Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartJuly 9, 2023Most Christians understand the importance of having the Bible in your own language so you can read it, understand it, and connect with Christ through it. In fact, that's been the motivation for translating the Bible into more than 1900 languages to date. But, “What was it like when the Bible was first translated into English? What effect did it have on the world? What difference did it make?” In this message, we're going to explore the answer to those questions, help you choose a Bible for yourself, and remind us all how easy it is to abuse the Bible.SERIES: THE STORY OF THE BIBLEThroughout history, the Bible has been burned, banned, ridiculed, distorted, outlawed, and abused - but it can't be ignored. If we listen to its message, it has the power to change not just our lives and our cities but even the entire world.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. What Bible translation do you use? Do you like it? And if so, why? If not, why? After hearing about the differences in translations, is there another type of Bible you'd like to read? On the web, Bible Gateway is a great source to check out different translations and how they read before purchasing a Bible. Are there any precautions you would offer to someone making their first Bible purchase?2. The translation of the Bible into English has had a major impact on society. Pastor Keith mentioned 5 different ways; language, literacy, literature, laws, and lives. What stood out to you most about the Bible's impact and why? Can you think of other ways having the Bible in our own language has benefitted society?3. The debate in Europe that centered around the proliferation of the Bible in English cut against the unjust system of feudalism. All because people began reading the Bible for themselves and discovering the message. What ought to impact us most when looking at the impact of Scripture's message is how the people in those days didn't restrict its message to the spiritual life. They saw God's word as applying to all of life including the very economic and political system that surrounded them and kept them oppressed. Few people do this today. How might our world be different if the people of God began taking the word of God seriously?4. Of course, not all of the Bible's legacy has been good in that those who have professed to know Christ have used God's word to wound, control, dominate and oppress others in bold contradiction to its message. Scripture is abundantly clear in regards to how we influence society and it is not through condemnation, judgment, or domination. Take some time to re-read the Scriptures regarding a believer's relationship to outsiders. What stands out to you about these injunctions? How can the church do a better job of modeling the spirit of Christ when it comes to all of these attitudes and behaviors? What do you find most compelling in a Christian who loves and relates in this way?https://www.springcreekchurch.org/#re... #thestoryofthebible #bible #canthebiblebetrusted #trust #translation #bibletranslations
