We invite you this week to focus on understanding our identity in Christ as we engage in spiritual battle, highlighting the practical meaning and Old Testament roots of the armor God equips us with. Based on Ephesians 6:13-17, let's consider our identity and readiness in spiritual battle! The Apostle Paul calls believers to “stand”—not in our own strength, but grounded in our new identity in Christ. Paul's instruction to put on the “full armor of God” isn't new; its roots run deep in the Old Testament, with key imagery borrowed from books like Isaiah and Deuteronomy. In Isaiah 11:5 and 59:17, righteousness, faithfulness, and salvation appear as God's own armor. This armor is now given to us, His adopted children, not as a child's imitation set but as the genuine armor of our commander. Why the Armor Fits—Old and New Testament Connections Paul isn't inventing something new for the church in Ephesians. The same armor God Himself wears in Isaiah—righteousness as a breastplate, salvation as a helmet—is now available to every believer, thanks to our adoption in Christ. In God's army, the commander and soldiers wear the same “colors”—we share in God's strength and righteousness. The armor is also prophetic: Isaiah 59 speaks of the coming of the Messiah like a rushing stream (an echo of Pentecost) and describes how God's Spirit will seal and empower His people. This sealing (see Ephesians 1:13) corresponds with being clothed in God's armor. Seven Elements of the Armor While many list six pieces, Ephesians points to seven, symbolizing fullness and perfection: Belt of Truth: Truth is both light and freedom. It's the foundation that supports all other pieces, anchoring our identity in what God has said and done, not our own perception or the world's lies. Breastplate of Righteousness: This isn't self-righteousness but Christ's righteousness. It's described as a “heart protector,” guarding us against accusations—whether from the enemy or our own self-doubt. Standing in Christ's righteousness, not our own, keeps us from the traps of pride or despair. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: These boots provide both stability (standing firm) and mobility (readiness to move). They symbolize preparation and the peace rooted in the gospel, enabling us to stand and advance as one body with other believers. Shield of Faith Helmet of Salvation Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) Prayer—the element that undergirds and animates all the others, keeping us connected to God and alert in the battle. Application: Standing Ready God calls us to “put on” and “take up” these elements daily—not hastily when the enemy attacks, but as preparation for victorious living. The Christian walk is not passive; it's a team endeavor, fought best in community, by truthfully embracing our identity and actively trusting God's provision. The full armor of God is a gift of grace, perfectly suited for each believer, grounding us in truth, righteousness, and peace, and continually energized by prayer. STAND ** Week 3: Stand Ready for Battle** "For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." — Ephesians 6:15-17 (NLT) I. Wear the Shoes of Readiness—Be Grounded in the Gospel “...For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.” —Ephesians 6:15 "Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us." — Romans 5:1 (NLT) "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!" — Isaiah 52:7 (NLT) II. Take Up the Shield of Faith—Block the Flaming Arrows “In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:16 "For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith." — 1 John 5:4 (NLT) "But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you." — Psalm 56:3 (NLT) III. Put on the Helmet of Salvation—Guard Your Mind “Put on salvation as your helmet…” —Ephesians 6:17 "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." — Romans 12:2 (NLT) "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NLT) IV. Take Up the Sword of the Spirit—Fight with God's Word “…and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” —Ephesians 6:17 "But Jesus told him, 'No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.''" — Matthew 4:4 (NLT) "Jesus responded, 'The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.''" — Matthew 4:7 (NLT) "‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" — Matthew 4:10 (NLT) "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." — Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) Application / Challenge: Use What God Has Given You Gospel Grounding: Write one sentence that summarizes the gospel. Say it aloud every morning this week as your foundation. Shield of Faith: Name one lie you're tempted to believe. Then find and write down one Scripture promise that tells the truth—and post it where you'll see it daily. Helmet of Salvation: Spend five intentional minutes each day reflecting on who you are in Christ. Let His truth shape your thoughts. Sword of the Spirit: Memorize one Bible verse that speaks directly to a struggle you're facing—and use it in prayer and conversation this week. Think about it. What specific steps can you take each morning to ground yourself in the gospel, ensuring you're ready to face the day's challenges? Identify one lie you've been tempted to believe recently. What Scripture can you apply to counter that lie and strengthen your faith? Think about a situation where negative thoughts or doubts overwhelmed you. How can you put on the "helmet of salvation" to guard your mind in similar situations moving forward? Choose a current struggle in your life. What Bible verse can you memorize and declare to actively fight back with the "sword of the Spirit"? The journey from Egypt to Canaan isn't without conflict; every believer must be ready for battle. Though we no longer see a pillar of cloud or fire, the Holy Spirit within us leads, strengthens, and equips us for victory. In this week's message we learn that fear is not just an emotion. It's a protocol for defeat, so God's command to “Fear not” is His strategy for winning. As members of God's army, we are called to fight the battles of our past, external pressures, spiritual opposition, and destiny itself. Yet we fight from victory, not for it because our Intercessor, Jesus, never fails.

Ready for Battle: Understanding Spiritual Warfare Series: Suited Up - The Armor of God (Week 1 of 7) Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-12 Summary Many Christians are losing spiritual battles—not because they lack strength, but because they don't understand who their real enemy is or the nature of the war they're fighting. In this opening message of our seven-week series on the Armor of God, we discover four foundational truths about spiritual warfare that every believer needs to understand. Key Points: 1. We Have a Real Enemy Who Is Powerful but Defeated Satan is not a myth or symbol—he's a real spiritual being with deliberate schemes against believers. But here's the good news: Jesus defeated him at the cross. We don't fight for victory; we fight from the victory Jesus already won. 2. Our Struggle Is Not Against Flesh and Blood The person who hurt you, opposed you, or frustrated you is not your true enemy. Behind human conflict are spiritual forces working to accomplish Satan's purposes. This truth transforms how we respond to marriage conflict, church disagreements, and cultural opposition. 3. The Battle Requires God's Armor, Not Our Own Strength You can't fight a spiritual enemy with natural weapons. Positive thinking, willpower, and human wisdom are insufficient for spiritual warfare. We need supernatural resources—the whole armor of God—to stand against the enemy's schemes. 4. The Goal Is to Stand Firm, Not to Fall Victory in spiritual warfare doesn't mean escaping all difficulties or attacks. It means remaining faithful to Christ when "evil days" come. With God's armor, we can withstand intense temptation, discouragement, and opposition without falling. The Bottom Line: We are in a real spiritual war against a real spiritual enemy, and victory comes not from our own strength but from standing firm in God's power using the armor He provides. Even as we enjoyed our family time over the Thanksgiving holiday, we found ourselves looking ahead to Monday when Hannah would finally get to start her new chemotherapy treatments.   The reprieve from treatments had been wonderful, and we were so glad Hannah was finally feeling more like herself, but we were really beginning to feel the urgency to get back to fighting this cancer.  Every day that passed without treatment felt like an opportunity for the cancer to gain a deeper foothold in her brain and spine.Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode of the While We're Waiting podcast in this year-long series in which I share our family's experiences as our teenage daughter Hannah battled glioblastoma brain cancer from February 2008 through February 2009.  My desire is to process through the events of those twelve months with the perspective that 16 years has brought … and point listeners to hope in Jesus along the way.I would love to hear your thoughts on the show.
