Today on the show I'm sitting down with a drumming legend in the indie rock n' roll community, Ms. Aixa Vilar of Go Betty Go. Go Betty Go has been a staple in the West Coast music scene for over 20 years.  Yes, 20 years; partying and rockin' alongside bands like The Dollyrots, Bad Mary, The Muffs and more. Indie rock is a family, an aesthetic and a way of life; it's a culture that Hollywood movies are made about to reflect upon and try to understand, though they often get it wrong.  In four days, Go Betty Go will be kickin' things off with their "Party at Sea" music video. Join me in welcoming Aixa Vilar to the Mouthful of Graffiti podcast! Sponsored by the Harford County Cultural Arts Board.

The minute Kelly and Lewis of the Dollyrots stepped into Respectable Street, I knew it was going to be a night to remember. Their infectious energy and unique punk flair instantly set the tone for an evening of raucous laughter, heartfelt stories, and a musical connection that began way back in eighth grade. Our conversation roamed from the spirited atmosphere of their first-ever show at this iconic punk venue to the inventive spirit that fuels their holiday tunes, including a punk rock rendition of "Auld Lang Syne." As we laughed about my engineer's introduction to hardcore punk, the Dollyrots also shed light on the challenges of touring the vast state of Florida and how punk's inherent upbeat spirit provides a stark contrast to other genres when it comes to celebrating love on Valentine's Day.Cruising through the streets of LA with a dream is an adventure not for the faint-hearted, and Kelly and Lewis embody the discipline and determination it takes to turn artistic aspirations into reality. Our chat took a deep dive into the highs and lows of chasing their musical passions, where the glamour of the City of Angels meets the gritty reality of tour life and the importance of keeping one's head above water amidst the seductive excesses of the industry. The duo didn't shy away from discussing the post-tour blues and how the pandemic's live performance void led them to the discovery of virtual shows—becoming a weekly source of community and hope for their fans.We wrapped up the episode pondering the ever-changing tides of punk music, from its raw beginnings to the polished soundtracks of today's indie scene. The Dollyrots, ambassadors of "bubblegum punk," took us behind the scenes of their creative process, sharing how they've woven influences like Nirvana into their distinctive sound while maintaining a playful edge through parody and fan engagement. The heart of our discussion celebrated the unbreakable bond between artist and audience, a connection Kelly and Lewis cherish deeply, whether they're high-fiving fans mid-song or shipping out DIY merch with a personal touch. By the end of this musical odyssey, it was clear that the spirit of punk rock isn't just alive—it's kicking harder than ever, thanks to bands like the Dollyrots.EPISODE CHAPTERS(0:00:04) - Journey of Love and Music(0:12:36) - Pursuing Artistic Dreams in LA(0:23:08) - Evolution of Punk Music(0:31:17) - Connection Through Music and AppreciationEPISODE CHAPTERS WITH SHORT KEY POINTS(0:00:04) - Journey of Love and MusicThe Dollyrots play at Respectable Street for the first time, discuss their holiday music process, and reflect on punk music for Valentine's Day.(0:12:36) - Pursuing Artistic Dreams in LACommitment and discipline in pursuing art in LA, surviving temptations and chaos, post-tour depression, virtual shows during pandemic.(0:23:08) - Evolution of Punk MusicPunk's evolution, bubblegum punk, Nirvana's influence, parody in punk culture, DIY approach to music and merchandise.(0:31:17) - Connection Through Music and AppreciationThe Dolly Rods share their energetic live performances, emphasizing fan interaction and their killer music.EPISODE CHAPTERS WITH FULL SUMMARIES(0:00:04) - Journey of Love and Music (13 Minutes)This chapter kicks off with my excitement about the Dollyrots playing at Respectable Street, a venue they're experiencing for the first time. I share a funny story about my engineer's first hardcore punk show at this venue, highlighting its unique atmosphere. We then touch on the challenges bands face when touring Florida due to the extensive driving required between shows. The Dollyrots discuss their creative process for holiday music, including their take on "Auld Lang Syne" and the idea of an ever-expanding Christmas album that might eventually cover all holidays. Lastly, we reflect on the positive vibe of punk music for Valentine's Day compared to metal, and I briefly mention how the Dollyrots' long history together began in eighth grade.(0:12:36) - Pursuing Artistic Dreams in LA (11 Minutes)This chapter opens up with a discussion on the bold decision to pursue art in places like LA, tackling the risks and the idea of seizing opportunities while young. We explore the concept of commitment and discipline in the music industry, contrasting the straight-edge lifestyle we chose to the notorious party scene of the 80s sunset strip. Reflecting on our past, we acknowledge how surviving the temptations and chaos of LA helped build resilience, preparing us for the rigors of touring. We touch on the concept of post-tour depression and the intense need for live music, especially highlighted during the lockdown when live shows ceased. Sharing personal experiences, we delve into the challenges of performing virtual shows amidst the pandemic and the unexpected sense of responsibility we felt as our audience came to rely on our weekly online performances for solace.(0:23:08) - Evolution of Punk Music (8 Minutes)This chapter we explore the evolution of punk and how its definition has shifted dramatically over the past decade. From its roots with bands like the Buzzcocks and the Ramones to its transformation into Warped Tour Screamo and the current indie pop leanings, we reflect on the genre's changes. I introduce the term "bubblegum punk" as a way to describe our own music, distinguishing it from pop punk or melodic punk. We also share anecdotes about the influence of Nirvana on our musical journey and discuss the significance of parody in punk culture, particularly in merchandise. Additionally, we touch on the importance of playing along to music you love as a way to learn and find your own voice, emphasizing that originality in music is about personal expression. Finally, we talk about connecting with fans through social media and our DIY approach to creating and shipping merchandise.(0:31:17) - Connection Through Music and Appreciation (1 Minutes)This chapter captures our engaging exchange with the energetic duo, the Dolly Rods—Kelly and Lewis. We explore the electrifying connection they foster with their audience through the intimate gestures like high fives and the shared experience of their live performances, which they liken to throwing a party every night. We touch on the importance of fan interaction in creating a memorable show atmosphere and encourage those who haven't yet experienced the Dolly Rods live to do so, not only for the vibrant interaction but also for their killer music. Plus, we share a lighthearted moment where they nearly forgot about their imminent stage time, reflecting the spontaneous and down-to-earth nature of their band. Every year I spend the last few weeks of the year searching for new holiday songs for The Ledge’s annual Chirstmas special. Inevitably, every year I find more than enough songs to fill over two hours of broadcast time. This is the perfect soundtrack for this year’s festivities. A little bit of punk, a lot of power pop. Some veteran acts return with new tunes (Brinsley Scwarz, The Sensible Gray Cells, The Dollyrots), mixed in with plenty of brand new discoveries whose future releases I’ll definitely be investigating.  Just because it’s a Christmas special doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the “52 Weeks Of Teenage Kicks” series. This week’s version is truly a Christmas present, as Dos Enchiritos is a collaboration between my friend of almost 50 years, Craig Stenseth, and a previous contributor, Brent Dowell. It’s a great version that I can honestly say is unlike any I’ve played the previous 50 weeks.  Obviously, next week will be the conclusion of this series, but I’m still in the hunt to round out the year with yet one more new take on the tune. Great things never happened to those who played it safe! That is a little bit of a loaded statement, but think about all of your favorite bands and artists. They would not have gotten to that point if they didn't take a risk. That is one of the reasons why the Dollyrots have been around for so long, and we have the couple of Kelly and Luis on the podcast for you today. On this episode, we dive deep intoHow the couple has taken calculated risks all throughout their careers, that has led them to tour the world, make music, and have a family, with so many great experiences and stories to share (that many young bands can draw inspiration from). The time Kelly handed Joan Jett the band's music, and that ended up with the Dollyrots signing with Joan Jett's record label.Night Owls, the brand new album, and the theory behind why reviewers have called it "Astounding Musical Perfection."Do not miss out on this fun band and fun episode. Bad Mary is an indie rock n' roll group hailing from New York! Today on the show I'm sitting down with the extremely talented pop punk muses of the group [Bad Mary], Amanda Mac and her husband Mike Staub. Their music is a happy mix of The Ramones, our recent guest, The Dollyrots and Green Day, all mixed together with a dash of Blondie for an authentic punk sound that's even caught the ear of Little Steven's Underground Garage. In their own words, ‘Bad Mary holds up warped mirror to the current culture and reminds us that having fun is the best way to give yourself an escape from the craziness.' They are here to talk about their new EP, Rock and Roll Classics, Vol. 7, and to promote some of their new music that is set to drop this fall called, ‘Trash and Glamour.' I'm thrilled to have them on the program. The Dollyrots are also currently on tour in the United Kingdom with good friends Bowling For Soup and LIT through April 23rd. Click here for dates!   Much Love, Jacques LaMore

During the band's 20-year run, The Dollyrots have released more than a dozen albums and EPs, played all over the world, performed with countless punk and rock and roll mainstays, and had their music featured on television shows and in films. Though the band itself has quite a long and interesting history, its founding members go back even further. Now back on the road in support of a new release — a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities and covers called Down the Rabbit Hole — on Wicked Cool Records, the story continues for Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas. Prior to a recent show at X-Ray Arcade, The Dollyrots welcomed My First Band host Tyler Maas into the band's RV to talk about Down the Rabbit Hole, the ongoing tour, upcoming European shows with Bowling For Soup and Lit, and the possibility their biggest hit is still to come. Over the course of the conversation, Ogden and Cabezas spoke about meeting in middle school, dating in high school, going to college together and starting a band, and moving to Los Angeles with no money and a bunch of exotic pets. Along the way, they talked about being featured in a commercial, their appreciation for people like Joan Jett and Steven Van Zandt, and how much they appreciate their drummer Justin, who also makes a cameo in the episode. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts.
