When we think of cancer prevention (or any chronic illness), we immediately focus on nutrition, exercise, and sleep. While all of these pieces of the wellness equation are essential, managing our mindset is also key when it comes to making sustainable lifestyle shifts.   Meg Hirshberg, founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, knows firsthand that what happens in our minds is foundational for creating habits and mindsets that help our bodies, prevent and recover from disease.   Her journey with breast cancer taught her how to take better care of her mind and body while learning that she didn't need to be 100% perfect along the way. She realized that the self-imposed pressure to eat, move, rest, and think “perfectly” was getting in the way of true healing and that having realistic expectations goes a long way in prevention, even with cancer.   Meg believes that in order for lifestyle changes to stick, they have to be sustainable and doable. We need to allow for the celebrations (cake included!) and the times when life gets in the way and we veer off course.   By letting yourself be human, you can create a long-term lifestyle, so that you can become your strongest, most resilient self.   In this episode, you'll learn:   The best approach to eating for an anticancer lifestyle Easy ways to recenter in stressful times Why deprivation never works (HINT: It backfires) A simple inspirational tool to motivate you to exercise Why mindset sets the foundation for an anticancer lifestyle How negative self-talk impacts your health and what works instead   You'll feel inspired to become more proactive with your overall well-being from what you're eating to how you're thinking…  and everything in between.   Podcast Partner: Pique Tea Use code ELISEM for a discount on your order!   Learn more about Meg Hershberg:   Anticancer Lifestyle Program Facebook: @AnticancerLifestyleFoundation Instagram: @AnticancerLifestyle Twitter: @anticancer New Free E-Book: The Healthy Kitchen: Reducing Toxins and Chemical Exposures   Learn More about Elise Museles:   elisemuseles.com Instagram: @kaleandchocolate Facebook: @kaleandchocolate   Resources: Mindset and Cancer: Reducing Stress, Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle Anticancer: A New Way of Life, David Servan-Schreiber Anti-Inflammatory Diet ebook Plant-Based Meats and Milk ebook Non-Toxic Nursery ebook Diet for a Small Planet, Frances Moore Lappé The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture, Wendell Berry Sugar Blues, William Dufty

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Meg Cadoux Hirshberg, breast cancer survivor and the co-founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, an online lifestyle transformation course for cancer survivors and those interested in disease prevention. For most of her career, Meg was a freelance writer for magazines, and for six years wrote a column for Inc. magazine about the intersection of family and business. Her award-winning book, For Better or For Work: A Survival Guide for Entrepreneurs and Their Families, was cited by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the year's best business books of 2012. After three cancer diagnoses and two recoveries within 19 years, Megan Cadoux Hirshberg is all too familiar with hearing people equate cancer with war. As founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, Meg teaches others to stop thinking of chronic illness as a winning or losing battle, but rather another component in the body's complex ecosystem.  The Anticancer Lifestyle Program is a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum that promotes transformation to improve the body's natural defenses against disease. Through the online course, Meg and experts from top medical facilities touch on simple changes that promote a healthier lifestyle, including reframing how we speak about chronic illness.  We had such an inspirational conversation with Meg and we were in awe of her ability to take her cancer diagnosis and turn it into such an amazing platform to help so many others. If you know anyone dealing with a cancer diagnosis, send them over to The Anticancer Lifestyle Program. We also loved hearing about the way Meg teaches others to reframe chronic illness as a component of the body's complex eco-system and think about more peaceful ways to talk about cancer. How to Boost Your Energy Without the Crash with Ethan Hirshberg Energy is a resource we often take for granted. It pushes us through the next workout or to beat our work deadlines. Our energy levels are affected by everything around us, from our environment, our diets, and our lifestyle. You may be tempted to reach out for another cup of coffee or the typical sugary drink. However, these can lead to the inevitable crash that will set us back in the long term. Thus, we need something to provide us with energy minus the crash.   In this episode, Ethan Hirshberg talks about his mindset toward health and wellness and insights on the importance of energy in our daily lives. He shares how he developed his products, from apple cider drinks to energy shots, that aim to provide energy in a sustained manner. Ethan also discusses the lessons he learned from running his own business and gives advice on how to improve your lifestyle.   If you are curious about boosting your energy without the jittery feeling and tiredness after, then listen to the full episode!     This Episode is Brought to you by:   GoMacro- Join GoMacro in supporting the amazing organization by going to gomacro.com and using promo code LOVED for 30% off plus free shipping!   Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover a way to boost your energy sustainably without the crash. His father is the co-founder of Stonyfield Farm. He is familiar and involved with the natural foods industry ever since he was a child. He was raised in an environment that fosters environmental awareness and organic foods, which translated to his efforts, such as eco-friendly packaging. There is more demand in the industry now than ever before. His Mindset Toward Health and Wellness As a child, he was indoctrinated into organic food that even his friends didn’t want to eat because it wasn’t pleasant. His mother is a three-time breast cancer survivor and advocates for a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and mindset. People are intimidated by healthy eating and the numerous fad diets that seem to contradict each other. Eating healthy definitely creates a momentum of better choices, from your diet to your exercise. We shouldn’t take “democratizing organic” for granted. Marketing Versus Product Development In Health Products It is easy to dress up anything as anything. Anyone can slap health claims and words onto labels with a lot of freedom, and people accept it as the truth. Consumers, especially younger ones, demand transparency and want to look beyond the labeling. With food, there should be a lot of authenticity with the product. Big companies buy out smaller companies that actually have something new and organic to bring to the table. Lessons Learned in Business You can only do one thing at a time and focus on that. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and intimidated by the path you're taking, so take small steps. Make sure you’re coming from an authentic place and sample your product with friends and family. The Importance of Exercise and Energy Ethan feels more frantic if he doesn’t get to exercise. It’s difficult to sit in front of a compute for several hours, especially if you don’t include a workout in the middle of the day. Energy is your most valuable resource. It’s less about the hours you spend and more about spending your hours well and productively.   Approaching Customer Feedback Ethan draws his energy to work from customer feedback. He gets more drive and motivation from knowing the difference he makes on people’s lives. His Idea of Energy Shots Most energy shots give you a jittery feeling that follows a crash. Ethan’s energy shots provide a sustained amount of energy without the crash. His approach in developing the products was a series of iterations and ensuring quality throughout the process The caffeine sources in his energy products are expensive but organic, compared to synthetic powders in typical energy shots. Tips for Improving Immunity, Energy, and Life Immunity isn’t something you can simply turn on. You have to maintain your health in the long term, and you can’t procrastinate. Be sustainable and consistent with your diet and your lifestyle. Take care of yourself even when things aren’t in the dire extreme. It’s a special experience to create something, put it out in the world, and have a positive impact on others. 5 Powerful Quotes “A lot of times, diet is the first place to start. Like, if you're eating better, it's going to be easier to start working out, you’re generally in a better mindset, you're sleeping better, all those things.”   “Around health and wellness, you really just create momentum, and that can be created through one simple decision.”   “The most important thing I've learned is that you can really only do one thing at a time.”   “People say that your most valuable resource is time, but it's actually energy. Think less in terms of your hours spent and more in terms of how you're most optimized.”   "If you can create something and put it out into the world and have it be real and then have things come back to you, that's a pretty special experience because you're interacting with the universe." About the Guest Ethan Hirshberg is the founder of Ethan’s, a company that produces energy shots and healthy beverages. EACH HALLOWEEN SEASON for the past ten years the Rolling Darkness Revue, a traveling fraternity of some of horror fiction’s premier talents, has presented an evening of new supernatural stories in celebration of the genre’s favorite holiday. A full theatrical experience which incorporates comedy, drama, and live music to illuminate and enhance the Halloween tradition of ghost story readings, the Revue was founded by Peter Atkins, Dennis Etchison, and Glen Hirshberg in 2004 and has been curated by Atkins & Hirshberg since 2006. The Revue began performing in bookstores, libraries, and parking lots, making the move to small theatres in 2009 as the show grew in nature (and audience). As well as becoming an October ritual for fans and readers, RDR has received glowing notices from, among others, the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition. Stories which have premiered at the Revue have many times been selected for inclusion in annual ‘Year’s Best’ anthologies from such noted editors as Ellen Datlow, Stephen Jones, and Paula Guran, and guest authors over the life of the show have included such genre and mainstream notables as Norman Partridge, Nancy Holder, Aimee Bender, Michael Blumlein, and Kim Newman. From the beginning, live music has been provided by the noted local ambient musicians Jonas Yip & Rex Flowers and, since 2009, acclaimed local actor Kevin Gregg has become an invaluable part of the cast. Mentioned in the episode: https://votesaveamerica.com/ballot Information on how your representatives have voted on the environment from the EWG (Environmental Working Group) President's Cancer Panel - evidence that pesticides are leading to increased cancer diagnoses (from 2010) I've talked about it many times before, but my trip to Sonoma earlier this year with Stonyfield Organic was truly life-changing. While I had a sense of the importance of organic food and the organic movement, I wasn't fully aware of the impact it actually had. To be honest, I hadn't interacted with the farmers, learned about how their practices differ and really the art that is organic food until this trip. Once Pandora's Box had been opened, it was hard to go back. One of the things that made this trip so phenomenal was getting to share it with Stonyfield's co-founder Gary Hirshberg. When it comes to yogurt and organics, he might be the most knowledgable person in the room. He's also incredibly inspiration so getting to hear his story in person left a profound impact on me. As I'm sure many of you know, we have a very important election coming up next week. There are many hot-button issues from healthcare to women's rights to immigration and while I wish I could dedicate an episode of the show to each, it just wasn't a possibility. But when it comes to the environment, I knew exactly who to ask to join me on the show in discussing the impact of this election on our planet. In addition to co-founding Stonyfield, Gary is also the founder of Just Label It, a coalition of voices in the organics space lobbying government for increased transparency in food labeling. Clearly, he's a busy man so I'm honored and excited to have him on the show today. Here are a few things we talked about in today's episode: How Gary got started in organics in the 1970s What led Gary to found Stonyfield and how it has evolved The benefits of choosing organic - for the planet and your body What is glyphosate and how is it affecting our bodies and the planet Why organic can absolutely feed the world The lack of government support for organics and why this matters How to vote with your dollar but also with your vote Join The Healthy Maven Tribe to ask guest questions and to find out who will be on the show before anyone else! http://facebook.com/groups/THMTribe Please don't forget to rate + review in iTunes if you love the podcast. "The question I had was, well I could teach people how to cope better, I could teach people how to manage that arousal better, but could I actually turn down that arousal so they weren't having to deal with so damn much." Laurence Hirshberg is a brainach. You'll get two minutes into this conversation and his intelligence will simply smack you in the face. I love that. I love brilliant people. But he's also the kind of smart person who deeply cares. That is why Laurence was such an awesome guest to have on. Not only does he know his stuff, he also deeply believes in what he's doing and has seen the power of it to change peoples lives. In this episode you'll learn about: His early research with babies (and why they made him feel guilty) His work with autism Why Big Data won't change the world how infrared light can heal the brain How we've come a long way from Electro Convulsive Therapy The book he recommends as a study break The book every student should read and much more.  P.S. Date: July 26, 2012 Featuring: Craig Brammer, Director, Beacon Communities, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, US Department of Health and Human Services Shelley B. Hirshberg, MHSA, Executive Director, P2 Collaboration of Western New York; Project Director, Western New York Aligning Forces for Quality(AF4Q), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Carol Beasley, MPPM, Executive Director of Strategic Projects, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Katherine Browne, MBA, MHA, Chief Operating Officer, National Program Director, Aligning Forces for Quality, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation There’s a lot of interest in the Triple Aim in the US, Canada, and several European countries. And it’s no wonder. Ever since IHI conceived of the framework of the simultaneous pursuit of better health, better health care, and lower per capita costs, a whole array of strategies have opened up for health care improvers. Some of the most interesting and groundbreaking strategies have built as much on insights from outside health care as within. And, just imagine if the various communities making headway with the Triple Aim started to think regionally? Well, many are and that’s the evolution this WIHI focuses on, tapping into three related but unique endeavors: IHI’s Triple Aim Initiative (with special focus on recent regional work), the Beacon Community Program (a project of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology), and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q). These three efforts combined have already impacted nearly 200 communities, to the point where many now realize that thinking regionally is the logical next step. Among other things, a regional focus forces an examination of cross-cutting social issues that affect more than a single community — issues such as unemployment, education, transportation, and crime. One community’s solutions to the needs of an aging population, people with chronic conditions, and individuals with complex social problems might benefit the community next door. Further, a regional outlook necessitates building even broader coalitions, drawing on the expertise of health systems operating in multiple locations, state and municipal leaders, public health experts, urban planners, economic developers, and more.   Our guides for the July 26 WIHI are Craig Brammer, Katherine Browne, Carol Beasley, and Shelley Hirschberg. The AF4Q effort alone has some 270 partners and a portfolio of projects, including health information technology, that point to what’s possible when one starts to act regionally as well as locally. We’ll be identifying other emerging regional “movers and shakers” as well.

NASIR: And this is where we cover business in the news and also put on our legal twist and also answer some of your business legal questions that you, the listener, sends in to ask@legallysoundsmartbusiness.com. Very good. MATT: Good intro, too. NASIR: I’m talking about myself – my intro. MATT: Yeah, good intro today. Good job. NASIR: Great. We are going to cover a nice little topic about families and businesses and spouses. I was thinking about this. I probably have at least I can think of four or five different clients that literally it’s a husband and wife operation as far as ownership goes. I always wondered how the dynamics filled that line. Today, we have a guest, her name is Meg Cadoux Hirshberg. She is the author of For Better or For Work and we found her. She actually got an article picked up on Inc.com which I thought was great. It’s called “I Love You but You’re Fired.” I thought it was a funny title. Well, of course, the link is on our show notes. Meg, how are you doing? MEG: Fine, thanks for having me today! NASIR: Absolutely. Matt, I’ve been thinking about this, we talk about how partnerships are like a marriage but what happens when the actual partnership is a husband and wife? That can really change the dynamics. MATT: You’re exactly right. A partnership, you have to view it as a marriage. If your partner in business is also your partner in your personal life, I could see lots of issues of where do you draw the line if you spend all day together at work. Do you go home and talk about work all day? There’s just a lot of things that go into that. So, I do really enjoy this article. It has a couple of stories and, from what I understand, Meg, you once worked with your spouse as well, correct? MEG: Yes, I did. My husband, Gary, founded Stonyfield Yogurt almost thirty years ago. When I met him and we moved up, we decided to get married and I moved up to the farm, we were actually on a farm in New Hampshire at that time – no longer – but when I moved up to the farm, I started working in the business right away and we worked together for a couple of years at which point we decided this was not the best thing for our relationship. So, I backed away from the business and haven’t worked for it since. NASIR: Very good. I think one of the biggest issues – despite whether it’s a marriage or not – finding who the decision-maker is in a business is sometimes difficult. We have a lot of people that come up with their partners, 50-50 partners, but I always tell them, “Look, even though you make decisions together, there has to be one person that breaks the tie, so to speak.” It reminds me, of course, we have to bring in the show The Office, when Jim and Michael were co-managers of the office and just how that just did not work and it doesn’t work in any other business. There’s always at least one person making those decisions. Would you find the same, Meg? MEG: Right. Well, that brings up one of the key issues that kind of rise when couples work together which is that it’s hard to transition from a situation at work in which usually one person is in-charge, i.e. the entrepreneur, often the spouse. Most businesses that are run by couples are not started by the couple together. Most are started by one person, the entrepreneur, who has a dream, has a vision, and then, “I want to help out.” That’s usually the way couples wind up working together. The relationship in the business setting is not equal. Usually, there is one person in-charge. Transitioning from that back home to a relationshi...
