This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! This ep. includes the final 25 responses! Be sure to also check out Volume's 1 & 2 to get the full experience! Guests appearing in Vol. 3 (in no particular order): Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, Joe Bonamassa, Desmond Child, Ed Toth of The Doobie Brothers, Walter Trout, Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Nick Niespodziani & Peter Olson of Yacht Rock Revue, Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big, Kevin “Sonny” Gullage, Emily Wolfe, Jax Hollow, Sean Faust, Wolfgang Valbrun, Carrie Cunningham, Jesse Jackson of Set Lusting Bruce, Eric Senich of the Van Halen News Desk / Booked on Rock Podcast, Jessica Ann Catena of Music Notes With Jess, Bobby Schultz of Effin' Cultured, Mac Wolf of The Ugly American Werewolf In London Rock Podcast, Jason Whissell of It's Not That Bad & There Can Only Be One Podcasts, friends of the show Jimmy Mitchell & Bob Spear, two more incredible Patreon Mixtapers: David Lee Smith & Philip Bergman, and last (but certainly not least!) a guest appearance from Paul Williams! This is Part TWO of Play That Rock n' Roll's retrospective about the legendary career of BOB SEGER. In this episode, we cover the commercial heyday of the Silver Bullet Band, Bob's foray into the MTV era, and what he has been up to in recent years. We also discuss some major pop culture events Bob passed on, his connections to Miami Vice, and the biggest chart hit of his career. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from my conversation with music journalist Gary Graff, who co-wrote a book about Bob's early career. I also included a selection of my conversation with Brian Colburn of the My Weekly Mixtape podcast about one of Bob's best albums. This is Part One of Play That Rock n' Roll's retrospective about the legendary career of BOB SEGER. In this episode, we cover the early days of "The Bob Seger System", Bob's breakthrough live album, and the start of one of the best "hot streaks" of releases in Classic Rock history. We also discuss a bizarre parody song Bob recorded in the '60s, what inspired the lyrics of "Turn the Page", and the massive hit song he co-wrote for the Eagles. We will discuss Bob's later years in Part 2. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from my conversation with music journalist Gary Graf, who co-wrote a book about Bob's early career. I also included a selection of my conversation with Brian Colburn of the My Weekly Mixtape podcast about one of Bob's best albums. It's hard to believe 2024 is coming to an end and that The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast is now in its 5th year of broadcasting our love for rock music into the world!! 2024 was an amazing year for the show which boasts the most episodes we've ever done in a year (64) and an amazing array of album reviews, concert reviews, and extraordinary guests. As we have in the past, we've broken it down into 2 shows - Part 1 is about all the albums we've reviewed and all the authors and podcasters who came on our show. Part 2 (out next week) looks back on the live concerts & movies we discussed and the 15 artists & legends we welcomed on the show. We tend to cover albums near a major anniversary (25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, etc) with the newest celebrating its 20th (American Idiot by Green Day) and several turning 55 (Abbey Road by The Beatles, Blind Faith debut, In The Court Of The Crimson King). We may review a double diamond selling classic one week and cult favorite that maybe scratched its way to gold status. But we reflect on all of them and then make our personal Top 5 lists of the albums we reviewed that we liked best. We also welcomed authors who've written some amazing books like Mark Blake and Mick Wall to share some stories along with podcasters who share our passion and knowledge for rock music. Our monthly First Concert Memories series gives people the chance to share special nights in their rock n roll journey that made them fans! Like Markus "The Darkus" Goldman of WMMR and The Imbalanced History of Rock Podcast sharing his experience with U2 Live at Red Rocks in 1983. Or Brian Colburn of My Weekly Mixtape talking about seeing Blues Traveler in NYC just months after 9/11 and finding the crowd was ready for some healing and good times. On this "Album Dive" episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am joined by modern blues artist Kevin "Sonny" Gullage to dig into the stories behind several songs from his debut album “Go Be Free” which is being released via Blind Pig Records. Some of the songs we discuss include: Just Kiss Me Baby, Go Be Free, Things I Can't Control, Worried About The Young (feat. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram), Tattooed Wings & Hot House. We also talk about Sonny's experience on Season 20 of American Idol, his family relation to blues/folk legend, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee “Lead Belly” Ledbetter; the music lineage in his family (Sister Alberta Gullage released gospel records for the Wajo label in the 1960's and his father, Tony Gullage played bass for Dr. John, Henry Butler as well as other artists around the New Orleans music scene); working with Tom Hambridge on the writing & production of the album; recording with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram & the lesson he learned from the entire experience overall. You can purchase “Go Be Free” on vinyl: https://www.blindpigrecords.com/product-page/sonny-gullage-go-be-free-lp as well as CD: https://www.blindpigrecords.com/product-page/sonny-gullage-go-be-free-cd and will be available Aug. 23rd everywhere music is streamed. In this bonus episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I'm throwing it back to a 2021 interview that Jay Sweet & I produced for Tunestiles Podcast with singer / songwriter Morgan Wade. Since Tunestiles ended 2 weeks after this episode aired, and was erased from the internet as soon as the show ended its run, if you weren't a Tunestiles' rider at the time, this interview is essentially brand new! In the sit down, we discuss: her debut solo album "Reckless," which was produced by Sadler Vaden and engineered by Paul Ebersold; the writing & recording process for the album; the stories behind the lyrics; the solo-acoustic live videos she produced for OurVinyl Sessions; her transition from fronting Morgan Wade & The Stepbrothers to forging her own solo career path, and so much more! Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode (along with some newer tracks to catch you up on what she's been doing since this episode was recorded). We at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast created our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, to give people a chance to share their passion for live music and how one particular rock show had a big impact on their life. FCM #8 is a glowing example of how a rock n roll show can regenerate and restore your passion for life after dark times. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Brian Colburn, a radio & podcast professional and host of My Weekly Mixtape, was commuting into New York City from New Jersey. While entering the LIncoln Tunnel, passengers were told that a plane had struck one of the World Trade Center towers and they would be rerouted back to their origin point. By the time they were back in New Jersey, both towers had crumbled. Like everyone in greater NYC, around the country and the world, Brian experienced a range of emotions and it took a long time to process that horror. However, on December 16, 2001, Brian saw that Blues Traveler, a New Jersey band he'd never seen live, were coming to the Roseland Ballroom that night. He called his buddies and within a couple of hours they were at the show. Hear Brian describe the feeling in the crowd as people tried to understand if it was OK to smile again, gather in a crowd and sing and dance to music you love. You'll get goosebumps as he describes John Popper playing the Star-Spangled Banner. You'll smile when you hear about Michael Franti joining Blues Traveler for a Bob Marley classic and Brian's encounter with him in the parking lot. And you'll tear up when you hear about the first responders who were honored on stage that night. This is why we created this podcast and we think you'll love Brian's story. Norah joins Ben this week for a discussion about recursion, and speaking of… Happy Second Anniversary to us! Norah has just seen another loud musical, and Ben is champing at the bit to talk about the game he's been playing lately. They start their circuitous loop with some Canadian music industry trivia, a correction for the dystopia episode, the definition, and unintentionally making fun of the Scottish. More loop centric topics include… making jewelry, an area of downtown Chicago, digital music, computer programming languages, rollercoasters, mathematics, Norah's Summer job in college, and “time loop” movies. On the topic of video games, Ben explains the importance of engaging gameplay loops, his stance on game reviews, and his experiences with the game Deathloop by Arkane Studios. 00:00:21 - Ben's recursion joke fail, and Norah sees the “updated” musical Tommy 00:02:42 - Other musicals… American Idiot and Jagged Little Pill, and “also known as music” 00:04:27 - Interesting Canadian music idiosyncrasies, and a dystopia episode correction 00:07:02 - 2nd Anniversary, weird duck callback, and a heartfelt THANK YOU to listeners! 00:09:30 - The definition according to Web and Ox, and Ben adds back some superfluous stuff 00:12:17 - “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” vegetarian haggis, loopholes, jewelry, and the loupe 00:15:05 - Jump rings, perspectives of helixes, the Chicago Loop, and US state opinions 00:18:57 - Ben is mistaken, what is in “the Loop,” the Chicago fireworks, and M3Ps? 00:21:17 - Audio formats, songs on a loop, “My Weekly Mixtape” shoutout, and recursion 00:23:30 - Norah is above BASIC, FORTRAN 77, and other loops in computer programming 00:25:08 - Marry the FORTRAN teacher, middle school is NOT grade school, and classrooms 00:27:45 - Mental math, Adderall, first looping rollercoaster “Flip Flap Railway,” and clothoids 00:32:26 - “Shuttle Loop” rollercoasters, strange loops, the Möbius strip, and Socrates 00:35:10 - A child's perspective on math, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the U-505 00:37:07 - Submarines are cramped, the coal mine, model trains, and going in to video games 00:39:30 - Ben explains gameplay loops, a rare dad joke from Norah, and Donut County 00:43:25 - Match 3 game loops, Norah understands, and Ben mentions Deathloop 00:45:19 - A discussion about movies, television, and books using the “time loop” concept 00:48:07 - Celebrating “Groundhog's Day,” and “The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” 00:49:34 - Ben undersells the movie Looper, and other “living the same day” movies 00:51:35 - The premise (relatively spoiler free) and game mechanics of the game “Deathloop” 00:54:03 - Discrepancies in user and news outlet reviews, and the start of Ben's critique 00:57:33 - “Redfall,” how skill trees work, a disclaimer, and the importance of intelligent AI 01:01:00 - Seven, Norah comes clean on playtime, some balancing is needed, and a bug 01:03:17 - Ben nitpicking about reviews, know your reviewer, and closing the show! Special guest Brian, the mastermind behind the “My Weekly Mixtape” podcast, joins Ben this week for an episode steeped in their childhood nostalgia! The word is mixtape, and the hosts will be talking at length about their experiences and memories making them. It wouldn't be the Two Vague Podcast if there wasn't a diversion or two along the way, but then Ben has a surprise for Brian to close out the show. They are going to make a MIXTAPE (sort of) composed of a list of memorable arcade games past and present! 00:00:21 - Introducing Brian and his “My Weekly Mixtape” podcast 00:03:05 - Brian and his buddies curated gaming centric mixes for sleepovers 00:06:13 - What sorts of shows are coming to MWM, and “musically and edibley” 00:09:12 - Teaching the younger viewers(?), tape customizations, and the gift of music 00:12:55 - Efficiency, “measure twice, cut once,” definition of mixtape, history, and statistics 00:16:18 - The fragility of cassette tapes, the worst band of all time, and not very becoming 00:17:58 - Ben bought the “Vivid” album 5 times, and home recording was NOT killing music 00:20:30 - Ignoring the innuendo in music, rumors in the time before Google, and Zima 00:23:44 - A mixology warning from Brian, get off the Zima, and Ben's mixtapes for purposes 00:27:12 - Brian's fascination with radio, using “deep cuts,” and an album's track order 00:31:45 - Where Ben and Brian developed their love of music, and playing an instrument 00:34:10 - “Hot Cross Buns,” the devil's instruments, and Brian and Ben's game preferences 00:37:34 - Conflicting opinions on “Space Ace,” the Sega CD, and the ESRB 00:40:23 - Nintendo games with the family, the art style of Don Bluth, and Brian's assignment 00:43:25 - Brian and Ben create a 10 game arcade using the patented(?) We've all taken part in scavenger hunts. They're fun, you get your step count in and when we were young, it was the best way for our parents to get us out of the house so they could cry freedom and enjoy the silence caused by our absence. Now picture that in 1980 without a smartphone. Not so fun now, is it? You know what is fun? This movie. So sit back as we prove to you that Midnight Madness is not that bad.
